I think the sentiment of a Smash game with 20-30 characters and no returning movesets has become more popular as of recently but will that ever happen? I think since Ultimate was so Ultimate many people don't want bigger anymore and want something scaled back, maybe that's why this became a trend in the first place. Personally I want it but how good does that game look from a marketing perspective? The most iconic thing about Smash IS it's marketing. I have major doubts that they'll be willing to change anything after this video.

One thing I never see with "cutting the Roster" videos is merging character together like Bowser Jr, you can get quite a few extra spaces if characters that are very similar to each other only take one spot, as if they are a costume but still act differently. Mario and Dr Mario, marth and lucina, Roy and chrom, Ness and Lucas, villager and issabelle, even ryu and Ken, just make them one fighter with slightly different attributes
or just make them skins, make them literally the exact same thing, Dr Mario should just be Mario with a labcoat not a different character to develop and balance and learn to play as and against
Honestly, out of all the "Cut the Roster in Half" videos I've seen, this is the most well-put together one imo. And maybe with a roster this smol, characters like Donkey Kong or Ganondorf can get more development time into giving them more faithful movesets, so there's a LITTLE bit of positivity to have with this.
I think the majority can agree that especially the 64 cast NEEDS to have their move sets updated each character since 64 has gotten new games and more moves to pull from to give them a fresh new take while also still keeping them iconic. Plus the 64 move sets over years have DEFINITELY shown their ugly cracks over time at this point.
I'm genuinly baffled and overjoyed as to how Xenoblade managed to thrive over many other franchises in Nintendo's history, the Switch really gave this series a second shot at life when no one believed in it.
They do represent the playing style of Fire Emblem better than other characters because they also use the Axe, Spear and Bow, you know, the weapon types from Fire Emblem
In my opinion, if the roster was cut down to 41 I would try to fit in as many unique franchises as possible (I.E. 1 Mario rep, 1 Zelda rep, 1 Metroid rep, etc) There are some who could be considered a representative of two different series (DK representing DK Country and Mario franchises) so there would be considerations as to “could we risk this franchise getting a second rep in order to represent an additional series?” And then finally Captain Falcon and the Mii Fighters would need to be included because captain falcon essentially represents the smash series itself, and Nintendo would want Miis so that they can sell us Mii Costumes as DLC

I'm so sick of every 'Cut the Roster video' keeping her solely because she's "part of the original 12", like that should negate the fact that she's in the top 5 most cuttable characters in this whole roster. And the fact that this fan created rule almost still didn't save her from previous Smash games says all that there is about how irrelevant she is to keep. While you made other cuts I wholeheartedly disagreed with, I'm just glad you didn't disappoint me with with getting rid of Jigglypuff.
Plus even in Brawl, it was confirmed that Jigglypuff was SUPPOSED to be cut, but due to time constraints she was kept on the roster. In a newer Smash game, I don’t think legacy status is gonna save her next time.

If the roster is cut for the next game, then Ice Climbers would stay because of how unique they are. If you’re making this as if none of the other Smash games existed, then Captain Falcon shouldn’t be here.
It's kinda fun to pause at the each section of characters before he eliminates them and try to guess which ones are gonna be cut, cuz I keep getting surprised (and perplexed) at some of the ones he chose to stay and those he gave the boot. I'm not angry, I'm just amused and a smidge confused
Best one of these videos I've seen by far just off that first dlc cut. Edit: Now that I've finished I agree with your original cut entirely except for 2 characters. Those being Wii Fit Trainer for Pac-Man because the Miis represent the Wii fair enough, and Bowser Jr for Rosalina and Luma for the more unique puppet fighter while still being an iconic Mario character.
Sakurai has never cut out any of the original 12 throughout all the games. With that rule i would re-add Snake, Pac-Man Simon and Sora. If Disney was not willing to give Sora then Banjo & Kazooie would be my other pick. Gotta have more third party characters than just Sonic Edit: Scratch that, Sakurai would probably want to represent games that debuted on Nintendo or at least popular ones on their platforms so replace Snake with Mega-Man, if no Sora then I'd get Banjo & Kazooie instead
The point is, it's hard to remove a character from the smash roster since most of them, if not ALL OF THEM, are important to the series. To Nintendo and to Video game history. It can be VERY controversial to remove Banjo & Kazooie, it can be controversial to remove Pac-Man, same to King K.Rool since fans begged for years for his inclusion, and very controversial if you remove all Star Fox characters even for the fact that we don't have a new Star Fox game since ZERO! Sure we all know Byleth ended up becoming the most controversial inclusion for the mere fact it is yet ANOTHER Fire Emblem character added into Smash. But if you count the number of how 3 Houses went, I say it's understandable.

The way I'd approach rebuilding the roster is first looking at characters who have had a new entry in their series on the Switch (for the recency bias), then look at characters whose series had massive success. I'd also retool all of the older fighters from 64 to Brawl who survived the cut with updated movesets based on their most recent entries. (For example, Link's moveset being inspired by the Wild Zeldas) And once the dust has settled, then I'd introduce some newcomers who come from new IPs that started on the switch, or from existing series with Switch entries. This'll keep interest up in those games, and being readily available for players to check out their home series if they're curious where a particular fighter hails from.
One of the better "Cut the roster in half" results, though I do think Terry Bogard would probably stay (unless there's something convoluted about Nintendo and SNK's working relationship I don't know about), given A. SNK is massive in certain parts of the world (namely the parts that speak Spanish), and B. He just got into Street Fighter 6 and there's a new Fatal Fury game coming out soon, so he's relevant again.
One thing I disagree with , on this list. If we're going by nintendo cutting them, someone official. Terry bogard inspired sakurai to even invent smash, and if anyone should stay, it's gonna be the guy that sakurai picked himself. Could maayybbee just make Young and Toon Link into alts for Link and squeeze in some of the others, but idk if that would work out.
(Spent like half an hour on this list just for no more than 3 people, if that, to even look at it.)

The one that always hurts the most for me is King K Rool. I’ve been dreaming of him in smash since like 2008, and when he finally showed up he became a phenomenon. A lot of love for him and DKC came back, and was born for the first time in certain players. But on paper, the cut makes sense…
You built up my hope to finally see Bowser Jr. make it through one of these, before pulling the rug out beneath me. Truly unforgivable.

THANK YOU, FOR CUTTING JIGGLYPUFF! I'm so sick of every 'Cut the Roster video' keeping her solely because she's "part of the original 12", like that should negate the fact that she's in the top 5 most cuttable characters in this whole roster.
And the fact that this fan created rule almost still didn't save her from previous Smash games says all that there is about how irrelevant she is to keep. While you made other cuts I wholeheartedly disagreed with, I'm just glad you didn't disappoint me with with getting rid of Jigglypuff.
Plus even in Brawl, it was confirmed that Jigglypuff was SUPPOSED to be cut, but due to time constraints she was kept on the roster. In a newer Smash game, I don’t think legacy status is gonna save her next time.

If the roster is cut for the next game, then Ice Climbers would stay because of how unique they are. If you’re making this as if none of the other Smash games existed, then Captain Falcon shouldn’t be here.

Edit: Now that I've finished I agree with your original cut entirely except for 2 characters. Those being Wii Fit Trainer for Pac-Man because the Miis represent the Wii fair enough, and Bowser Jr for Rosalina and Luma for the more unique puppet fighter while still being an iconic Mario character.
Plus having Mario, Sonic, Pac-man, and Steve all in one free for all I believe looks good for the game,.

Sakurai has never cut out any of the original 12 throughout all the games. With that rule i would re-add Snake, Pac-Man Simon and Sora. If Disney was not willing to give Sora then Banjo & Kazooie would be my other pick. Gotta have more third party characters than just Sonic
Edit: Scratch that, Sakurai would probably want to represent games that debuted on Nintendo or at least popular ones on their platforms so replace Snake with Mega-Man, if no Sora then I'd get Banjo & Kazooie instead
The point is, it's hard to remove a character from the smash roster since most of them, if not ALL OF THEM, are important to the series. To Nintendo and to Video game history.
It can be VERY controversial to remove Banjo & Kazooie, it can be controversial to remove Pac-Man, same to King K.Rool since fans begged for years for his inclusion, and very controversial if you remove all Star Fox characters even for the fact that we don't have a new Star Fox game since ZERO!
Sure we all know Byleth ended up becoming the most controversial inclusion for the mere fact it is yet ANOTHER Fire Emblem character added into Smash. But if you count the number of how 3 Houses went, I say it's understandable.

- Dark Samus is basically a costume, it can go.
- Ness, you're cool, but your last game was jpn exclusive 06, take your rest. Lucas, you too.
- Falcon is *THE* Super Smash Brother, he stays.
- Jigglypuff, your time in the sun is done, make room for someone new.
- Daisy literally IS a skin with a slot, either get an actual moveset or leave.
- Climbers can go, i dont need to elaborate.
- Sheik hasn't been in a (mainline) game since her debut, give us Impa's call information and head on out.
- Doc is a skin, bye.
- Pichu, bye.
- I don't care how "unique" from Fox he is in smash, Falco can be a SKIN.
- Lucina, Roy, and Chrom can all be skins for Marth, add in skins of other lords and we're golden, imo.
- Young Link could stay if he did something to make him stand as more than just a different Link (like masks), otherwise he's out. Same applies for Toon Link.
- Dark Pit, you're a skin, you had your chance to be unique but despite not wanting to be seen as a carbon copy of Pit, that's basically what you are.
- Please never let Samus show up again without that suit.
- I really wish I was more interested in Snake, he can go.
- Bye, Diddy, K Rool is just more interesting.

- Bowser Jr. is alright, but we won't be missing anything without him. If we really need someone in the "uses a mech" slot, bring Wily or Eggman.

The way I'd approach rebuilding the roster is first looking at characters who have had a new entry in their series on the Switch (for the recency bias), then look at characters whose series had massive success.
I'd also retool all of the older fighters from 64 to Brawl who survived the cut with updated movesets based on their most recent entries. (For example, Link's moveset being inspired by the Wild Zeldas)
And once the dust has settled, then I'd introduce some newcomers who come from new IPs that started on the switch, or from existing series with Switch entries. This'll keep interest up in those games, and being readily available for players to check out their home series if they're curious where a particular fighter hails from.
One of the better "Cut the roster in half" results, though I do think Terry Bogard would probably stay (unless there's something convoluted about Nintendo and SNK's working relationship I don't know about), given A. SNK is massive in certain parts of the world (namely the parts that speak Spanish), and B. He just got into Street Fighter 6 and there's a new Fatal Fury game coming out soon, so he's relevant again.
