When Sam says, "It's X's turn and the penultimate turn of the duel.' I dunno it just scratches a part of my brain. I love these duel analyses videos and hope to see more of the duels from Zexal and Arc-V covered.
I Agee! I’d love to see more Vrains duels too as it’s got some pretty good duels too! Also can we all just pay respects to Fluffal/Frightfur for being the biggest victims of US Yugioh censorship. The Frightfurs look so dope with all the blades, but them being censored just makes me look goofy instead of terrifying like they’re supposed to be
Sora becoming sadistic when he’s exposed as someone from Academia will always be my absolute favourite part of the duel. I remember watching the duel for the first time and having chills when Sora switches personality and becoming so serious, being determined to defeat Shun.
@@roncerjani9063 I understand what you mean, Pegasus was the og, but vetrix straight up owned his new face/voice and went with it to terrify those who got in his his and didn't let it stop him- I was more cautious of little him than giant girag! That's what stood out to me was his reveal more than Pegasus having the millennium eye
I agree. That duel had me on the edge of my bed the entire time, Sora instantly became one of my favorite characters with how well they did the transition
Sora not summoning Tiger or Sabre-Tooth on the first duel might've simply been a case of him just not having them at the moment. By the time he does use them, he had already gone back to the Fusion Dimension and the crushing defeat he suffered could've led him to augment his deck. Tiger stands out between all the fusion monsters Sora summons, because it's the only base Frightfur (by that I mean the ones that are only a Flufflal + an Edge Imp) he uses that doesn't have a Fluffal monsters to go with it, there is no Fluffal Tiger, and I think this is a sign that he added it later because he no longer needs to hide who he is, so he doesn't need a cute animal version of his monster.
It's a good theory. It could also be that Sora just like to play Chimera, since he used that against Zark, so maybe aside from Frightfur bear, Chimera is his second ace
Honestly yeah, there are a lot of cases (this among them) where a certain card going unused can be explained away as said card being added later when they upgrade their deck. Our main pieces of evidence for decks being later upgraded lie in GX and DM where characters are shown deck building on numerous occasions.
It can also be because many other shows already materialized cards out of nowhere, like Divine Neos, Quasar Dragon, Utopia Roots, etc, and as each show got more transparent on those Deus Ex Machina.
The first duel is probably one of my favorite, but it is a plot-heavy duel. It literally starts with Reiji forcing Shun to duel in a simulacrum of his home town before it was destroyed by war just to get him angry. Sora becomes increasingly unhinged as Shun keeps finding ways to counter him, letting his mask slip as the hunter becomes frustrated at his prey. When Sora pulls out Frightfur Leo, he has it bodycheck and grind its way through a wall only for Nico Smiley to say "Aren't you being a bit violent?" as Sora plays it off. The two going at each other literally turns Neo Heartland City into a war zone with debris and fire everywhere, shocking the audience. Sora picking Frightfur Chimera to fuse into at the end was absolutely a plot choice. It's the most twisted and evil-looking fusion monster he has and he brings it out right as he admits to the crowd that he enjoys the sport of hunting down other people and goes full psycho. Sora's actions flip the dynamic he and Shun had with the other characters with Shun being more sympathetic and Sora becoming untrustworthy.
One of my favorite duels from Arc-V, not just for the action but also the meta commentary. **Shun and Sora going back and forth** "These two titans are slugging it out, and the crowd is THRILLLLLED-" **the camera pans to a bawling child** "-except that little girl."
Hi everyone, RR player here, I must say, during the second duel's first turn shun made multiple huge missplays: - The "infinite" loop of vanishing+fuzzy is great but not optimal as he had 2 singing in hand. If he had used both after the summon of the 1st force strix he could have done the exact same triple force strix set up but also have 2 vanishing lanii on the field. At that point, even with "frightfur designer" Sora wouldn't have been able to survive the strixes assaults. - The third strix's effect could have grabbed him either booster strix which could have destroyed the attacking frightfur or a Avenge Vulture which would have summoned himself upon shun taking any kind of damage to allow him to survive more damage. (both are in his anime deck, even if shown latter he has to have at least some amount of lvl 4 RR in his deck if he plays triple force strix) Knowing how fragile RR are as a deck these 2 missplays are immensly costly even if they seem unconsequential. Also, Neither of these plays require the power of insight, giving shun no excuses to not have done this. Also, also, if shun had used the triple force+double vanishing line he could have kept one of the lanii in def as a safeguard as the triple strix would have done 2100+300+300 = 2700 (due to designer and the edge imp) and the last lanius has 1300 which is exact lethal giving him a form of defense from even blowouts like mirror force! So big missplay to you shun!
I absolutely agree, even when I barely even started to play RR when I watched the anime for the first time, the whole duel felt like Shin misplayed a lot.
@@crocky6996 to be fair the deck plays vastly different in the anime compared to irl. the original deck has no way to search RUMs nor does it have any big monsters. The only one you have is rise falcon and it needs monsters on field to otk, this is why you never see shun negate a polymerisation even if it's the clear chock point, he must let his opponent build a board to then do a reversal on them. With no S/T he's forced to just punch with force strixes which is far from ideal
@@hultraspitfire2151 Not only that doesn't improve my impression over the duel, but it also makes me wonder: couldn't he just go second then? If his deck is so reliant of having things to react to, then he should've let Sora take the first turn. And even if he can't do that, just like OP mentioned: he could've had the two VLs to have a better defense and added Booster Strix to destroy an attacking Frightfur, knowing he got it in his deck too.
@@crocky6996 so this is the anime RR conundrum, you want to go second to otk, yes, but you don't want your opponent to set up interuptions either. So you go first to set up traps to interrupt just enough the opponent in a way that guarantees you the otk. That being said he did go second in the second duel.
The first duel between Syun and Sora was legendary. Sora's mask-off moment was absolutely flawless, from the music, the timing, his grotesquely contorting face showing just how twisted the kid actually was. And it was all capped off with a certified Syun moment. "On behalf of those before me who fought valiantly, thy crimes are countless, and thy punishment is dust!" - Syun Kurosaki, probably.
Some missing context in the first match. Sora was attempting to play like Yuya with his Entertainment Dueling. I believe this is what held him back from outright winning that game as he was looking to put more of a show and later realizing it wasn't going to be an easy win his demeanor was starting to crack showing he's actually a psychopath.
This isn’t exactly true, sora had been acting as a double agent the entire time since we were first introduced to him, sora played every right move he could and trying to put on a show or not wouldn’t have made a difference, the reason he started to go all psychotic was because he was losing to an xyzian which he believed at the time were scum and trash
Havent figured it out fully yet, but qucik notes: - If Sora manages to destroy the 2 Singing Lanius and then plays Leo that would do 1100 damage by destroying one of the Strix - If a Vanishing Lanius attacks directly, that's 1300 damage that Sora takes - If Edge Imp Sabers is summoned, it returns a Fluffal to special summon a Fluffal which is how Mouse gets onto the board in attack - Sora obviously plays De-Fusion which is the only way currently I see of getting 2 monsters on the board during the opponent's turn
I agree he would have to fuse which could cause shay to go defensive or more-or-less making shay not quite as confident to go all out attack. Then after destroying the fusion monster sora uses a fusion card to get back the materials or the frightfur card that returns cards from gy to field. Plus we don't know if he used cards like back to square one or back to the front
Yeah, they just dont play cards that could do such things in other duels and its obviously an episode where they're determined not to use action cards. I'm stuck on what would return all of Kurosaki's grave monsters to either hand or field since they chain off each other, I guess something like Pot of Avarice works, but I dont think he'd play that :p Sora doesnt have anything except De-Fusion that would bring back the monsters during the opponent's turn, but its easier to imagine a generic trap that could bring 2 monsters out.
For why Sora used Chimera, the dude just REALLY likes that monster. In the Japanese version of the show he always sounds extra passionate when he explains its abilities (especially the 300 atk point boost part for some freakin reason). So i guess he just played favorites :D
I remember being not too fussed about Arc-V during my first watch... right up until this duel. Both the visuals and the back-and-forth dynamics were great on their own, but Sora's "true face" reveal REALLY elevated the show for me in a big way - I went from being mildly interested to completely enthralled over the course of a single episode. It really gave me a lot of confidence that Arc-V had a lot to offer behind its initial exterior, and I can't praise it enough for that.
Shun actually does explain why he has that card funny enough. When Sora says that he's about to beat him with his own monster, Shun says that during the war that happened, that him and others always have to be prepared to take back a captured comrade. This allows to the fact that he wasn't just talking about actual people but also his monsters so it made sense. He was prepared for other people to try to find a way to use his own XYZ monsters against him Edited: I see that you did include that you noticed he said that Injustice to reaffirm it, he was talking about both.
He might have also been talking about Kite and his Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon, which can steal monsters. They had a rivalry before the war, being from different schools
@@scottiemoseley2116 That and it could also play around a theory that Shun battled Ryo and his Cyber Dragon Nova/Infinity (seriously, why isn't Ryo in Arc-V having the enemy's summoning mechanic as support)
@@scottiemoseley2116they were from different BRANCHES(think the different dorms in Gx). Revolution force is JUST for when fusion steals the monsters(potentially to counter other xyz users), not Kaito. It is implied that Galaxy eyes was obtained AFTER the invasion, one of the ways is how when yuto sees it he doesn't comment on it's strength and senses rage from the monster while pre invasion, Kaito dueled with warmth(happy)...
@@drakeredgrave6747 That means there’s other Cipher cards that could make the deck actually playable, and we’ll never see them. Shame. Also, I don’t remember any of the Academia soldiers having cards that could steal monsters. The Xyz dimension arc was so short, that I don’t remember.
Fusion duelists were known to toy with their prey, using their cards against them and stealing their souls. Makes sense to have a card that punishes the opponent for it. That and there is an extra deck monster that can rank up by discarding a rank up magic, which makes the card never truly dead.
I love Frightfurs too. They are literally called "Death Toys" in the OCG. And yeah, the kids' reactions sell how messed up they are. Also, Shun and his Raid Raptors are awesome. This was one dynamic duel.
I'm pretty sure he wasn't trying to expose him. He was pretty much trying to send a message to sora(and to an extent the fusion dimension, although they wouldn't hear it) through his dueling: "You may have us on the back foot, but we are prepared to to fight and we will win!"
Please do Playmaker vs Ai, the ceremonial duel of Vrains (and the master duel era of the anime). It’s a brilliant duel that caps off Vrains with an emotional character driven dynamic as well as some unique plays with two powerful Cyberse decks. Also, since Playmaker used exactly 15 extra deck monsters during that duel, would it have been possible if he could’ve won or lost sooner if he played different with when he summoned his extra deck monsters.
From what I can tell, it seems like Shun used some kind of trap that went something like "When an Xyz monster is destroyed by battle or card effect; special summon its Xyz materials from the graveyard to the field. These monsters cannot be used as Xyz materials." And since he had 2 backrow, it's highly likely he used two of the same trap. Either that, or said face down revived the materials of *all* Xyz monsters destroyed by battle this turn. In terms of why Sora's field state was so strange, I remember that there's a Frightfur card that special summons a Fluffal and an Edge Imp monster, so considering that he hadn't used Mouse's effect yet, I'm guessing that's what it was. I don't remember if he ever had the Frightfur squid, but that would be my best guess as to how he could've destroyed two of the Force Stryx and probably used a trap or something on the other Lanius.
You could say that Shun has a Revolution Force in his deck to prepare for situations like what happened inthis kind of duel. There’s also the fact that he and his dimension have been at war with Academia, and the latter made clear they are sadistic to the point of considering what they do is a hunting game. There’s also a character like Dennis, a Fusion Dimension shy whose archetype uses XYZ monsters, so there are always possibilities. Plus Sora lost because he also underestimated Shun too much because Frightfur Chimera’s anime effect had this included: “When this card attacks or attacked: You can activate this effect; your opponent cannot activate Spell/Trap Cards, until the end of the Battle Phase.” Meaning he would have stopped Shun from even doing anything on the word Go the moment he attacked.
It's also not the only card Shay(Shun) has for the event his Monster get stolen from him. We saw in Episode 63 when Yuya, Sylvio(Shingo), and Gong fought the Secuirty Offciers that they used their Goyo Monster to take control of their Monsters, so Shay jumped in and used Rescue Xyz to take back control of their LV 4 Monsters, use them to Xyz Summon Rise Falcon and go for game.
Honestly this Duel analysis reminds me of the Turbo Duel with Yusei & Sherry LeBlanc, where it gets interrupted, and at first glance towards the end, Yusei looked like he was gonna lose. The fact that he and Sherry were enjoying themselves in that duel was a sign of respect between them, and also the inadvertent envy arising from Akiza, where she didn't want to be left out and enjoy the Turbo Duel world that Yusei and his friends are involved in and grew up with. Would love to see a Duel analysis of that one in the future.
This is quite literally the Best duel in YUGIOH history for me. The animation, the voice acting, the action and hype of the duel, the interactions and Sora getting crazier and crazier and the reveal/tease of the Academia invasion. It was PERFECT. I doubt Yugioh will ever be able to make such a perfect duel again, it had everything lined up perfectly
Shun - Favourite Arc V character next to Reiji and Raidraptor - Best Xyz deck. “We will always get our Teammates back!” One of the coldest and awesome line deliveries ever for the show. Yamato Kinjo and Matt Shipman really nailed the character down with the acting.
14:53 technically its just meant to show his, and by extension, the rest of the resistance determination to save their comrades. The fusion duelist all card their victims so rarely if ever will there be a xyz turned fusioner. This is also probably meant to show how other invading fusion duelist play, they think stealing their xyz monsters is fun, a way to put salt on the wound by defeating them with their own monsters(something that both chinera and bear do in soras deck) and show the superiority of fusion monsters...
Their first duel is my favorite duel of the series. The duel just before that is Yuya vs. Sawatari which is a great entertainment duel that excites the crowd and is Yuya's idea of the perfect duel. Then this duel happens witch over the course of it just devolves into a straight up battle with the city field being destroyed. Sora starting out as the type of entertainment duelist Yuya strives to be and becoming the person that Shun has known is just awesome. A note on the RUM-Revolution Force: As you pointed out Shun was prepared for everything. Over the course of the series we learn that academia just overwhelmed the Xyz Dimension and thought it was funny what they were doing. So my theory is that they started to take control of their opponents Xyz monsters just to show them how weak they are just like Sora did.
I legit SQUEALED when I saw this. I have been waiting for years to see you cover their masterpiece of a duel (the second one is...okay, I guess)! Their first duel is honestly my favourite ever in the franchise, because it knowingly plays on the viewer's expectations and uses the long-time patterns of duel writing for narrative effect, in addition to being a tightly-plotted duel. Other duels are obviously great too, but I can't think of any others that come across quite so cleanly. A really good analysis of Shun vs. Sora (R1) is Yugioh Everything's video, "What Made Shun VS Sora so Special?" It's excellent. It's why I've waited so long to see you cover the duel.
Every Declan vs Yuya duel was pretty good too. Then there’s Yuya vs Jack’s final duel, Shay vs Crow was also pretty dope too, and then Shay vs Dennis is one of my favorites.
The fusion dimension infiltrators are some of the best in the series. Their decks reflect their personalities very well, and their character arcs were a ton of fun
25:46 I think I actually have a bit of an answer for this question Shay couldn’t know what Sora might end up drawing next turn, so he wanted to keep as many monsters as possible on the field so that Force Strix would have the strength to avoid being destroyed If he instead decided to XYZ summon a monster, he would have to give up 1500 attack points on Force Strix, assuming he went with Rise Falcon based on his previous duel, making it incredibly weak and leaving him with a subpar lineup, as all it would then take for Sora to overtake Shay and ruin his lineup is something with at least 1500 attack points to overtake Fuzzy or Vanishing Lanius Without knowing what else Shay has in his hand, this ultimately was his best play, as it allowed him to keep at least one strong monster on the field, as I assume by the positions of each monster, he planned to go for game next turn, using the 3 in attack to finish the duel
Only a matter of time before this duel would be analysed. Dylan of YGO Everything will be happy to see this. It is an iconic duel for the franchise but I personally wouldn’t call it the best of Arc V. Don’t lash out but like the Yugi vs Kaiba Battle City duel where damn near everyone labels it the best duel of its respective show, I think it’s overrated. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a brilliant duel with great action, animation, voice acting (sub and dub, especially for Shun), music etc but I prefer duels such as Yuya vs Jack R2, Yuya vs Ruri and Serena, Yuya vs Yuri, Jack vs Sergey, Yuya vs Reiji R2 and 3, Shun vs Dennis R2.
Wait so you’re telling me Shun won because he used a hyper specific card that was only useful because the exact situation where it would be good just so happen to come up at the right pivotal moment? Damn bro really did come from the Zexal dimension.
🤔Shay is a great example of how the Heart of the Cards can literally turn the tide of battle. Wasn’t there a duel against 3 Leo Institute students where he boasted that he always wins no matter the odds even though they all had their ace monster, he was missing a lot of LP *and* he had no cards in his hand? Immediately before drawing the one card that couldn’t him the duel his next turn?
@@Yojimbo16 that one isn't that bad. It's just a battle phase skip with extra steps that happened to be beneficial in a duel. You just reminded me of a Master Duel match I had. The opponent set Rank up magic Barian the seventh (the one that needs to be drawn on the draw phase to be used) on the top of their deck to draw it on their next turn. I used "Day of peace" which makes it so I draw a card and won't take damage until the end of their turn. The usual downside is that they get to draw a card, making it a plus one for the opponent. Except, in this case... it made the opponent draw in a way that turned their most powerful card into a brick. It was hilarious. Long story short, I had an overlay award experience XD
All I heard when I read the title was "Rain Down Hell My Giant Metal Birdy!" followed by maniacal laughter from Shay only to realize this was a different duel. Still love Shay as a character but abridge Shay is a whole other menace.

This is easily my favorite duel in the franchise. Was the first and only time Action Duels really felt valid to me and the series never really hit the same heights of action duels since.
It's a perfect balance on Deus and Diabulus Ex Machina. Yugioh even in DM has always been that show that twisted such an insufferable writing sin into an actual fun thing to see, and having both using Action cards in pivotal moments feels like both are equally skilled and prepared, unlike other duels on the show where only Yuya grabbed them and the opponents didn't care.
20:46 - oh yeah, it's just the angle you see it from. An arm is meant to bend that way, you see if you umm.. and the arm goes like.. ... ... and then you just snap it at the elbow and done! realistic animation!
The Shun vs Sora match was the reveal that there was more going on than was being told, and an exciting twist. I loved their duels. I also ended up playing Fluffals irl for a stupidly long time haha my beloved
THIS was the battle that changed ARC-V and made me love the series. The fact the there were many hints about Shay and Sora in all of the episode prior, but because everyone uses all of the summoning mechanics you think nothing of it. Then the field spell Neo heartland city is played and everything changes. You think oh that's cool they are acknowledging a past series, its been done before. But the crowed act like they never heard of this place which is strange, then Shay's reaction and continued duel with Sora spella it out that there is more to ARC-V then the dueltainment stuff on the surface. And that ARC-Vs place in the Yugioh timeline is warped.
Why does everyone assume that Arc-V, and by extension Zexal, has to be in the same contiguous timeline as the original three Yugioh shows? For all intents and purposes Zexal wasn't, the Duel Sanctuary only ever amounted to nice easter eggs in practice. It's fine as a headcanon, but I genuinely don't understand where people are coming from with the assumption that the shows all share a timeline.
@@aether6293 5Ds is relatively solid either way, given that Neo Domino is, well, Neo DOMINO, and it's actually canon--though obscurely so, since it was stated in a Japan-only 10th anniversary book or something (which I guess was kind of a BBT thing)--that Ushio, the guy who was Atem's first victim and inadvertently responsible for fostering the seeds of Yugi and Joey's friendship, grows up to be Trudge in 5Ds. People I know pass over that in favour of taking 5Ds as being a long time in the future, which works too. I think it ought to be in the same timeline on the basis of Kazuki Takahashi's involvement if nothing else.
@@EthanKironus8067they are not literally in one contiguous timeline tho... If you watched a video made by spellcommander101 (I hope I remember the channel's name correctly), there he explained the timelines of all yugioh series In his video, he even explained how zexal came to existence. Just to summarise it, he explained that zexal came from a branch timeline that ylliaster made in 5ds. This is the timeline where momentum and synchro summoning and synchro monsters have already destroyed humankind. Then maybe yusei or someone else found an alternative energy source, which is a mini black hole (that's why you can see a mini black hole when someone overlays their monsters) to get rid of momentum. Then, if I remember it correctly, the standard dimension in arc-V series is the continuation of DM era (I think it is after DSOD). He also explained how other dimensions from arc-V came into existence as well
Oh, hell yes! I always wanna to see this duel being analyzed! One of the best duel in Arc-V. Thank you so much for doing this Sam!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 You know, it would be so cool for this video if Dylan from Yugioh Everything joined on it since he likes this duel as well
I wish the Dub got fully uploaded to YT. The 1st season got uploaded nearly 3 years. Where are the others? I hope Aporia's duels get done someday. This series is fun to watch.
"If sora hadnt summoned chimera, he wouldve won" is a massive W. If sora wasnt pointlessly sadistic and wanted to kill him with his own monster, he couldve won. Peak writing.
Well done TGS Anime! Really really hated the fact that the animators cut away from Sora and Shay’s duel, TWICE!!!!! What were they thinking doing that?! In any case here are some suggestions for future duels: Atem and Kaiba vs Lumis and Umbra Atem and Joey vs the Big 5 Atem vs Gurimo Kaiba vs Alister (both rounds of possible) Jaden vs Aster Phoenix (round 2) Aster Phoenix vs Adrian Gecko Jaden vs Darkness (Season 4) Yuma and Nash vs Don Thousand Everyone vs Zarc
ARC-V, the show that needed about 50 more episodes to resolve the dozens of loose ends created by the rushed ending of the show. An absolute roller coaster of a show with high highs (like this Duel and others like Jack vs Sergey and Crow vs Shun and Yuri vs the GX Nostalgia and Odd-Eyes Raging Dragon’s debut) but also had really low lows (any time an Action Card was used and how tragically wasted the bracelet girls ended up for example). Definitely one of the weaker shows of the original 6 Yugioh series, even though it had great moments like this Duel
Revolution force must have been pretty useful back when shun used to duel XYZ duelists. Side note, I love that the real life version of the card kept the situational effect while adding a more generic one ao that it isn't hot garbage. edit:wow, you said both things. Neat.
It seems like a lot of Sora's monsters take their opponents monster when destroyed to add some effect to his monsters so I think Shay made a smart play with that magic card though I do see what you mean by a plot card.
Hyper-situational cards are exactly why the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime is known for its ridiculous plot armour moments like Shun using RUM - Revolution Force against Sora, it's the series' bread and butter at this point - and considering how hyper-situational certain cards from the past are like Gryphon Wing or Anti-Raigeki, it's something that hasn't changed in quarter of a century.
Shun plays Rank up revolution force because the fusion dimension invaders probably uses effects that take control of an opponent's monster. Shun battled a lot, and with his speech, it must be the case.
Still holding out for a WRGP duel, you know simply Team 5ds vs Team New World (and Aporia), Team Ragnarok, Team Unicorn who made Yusei almost lose from deck out, the team that sabotages using a duel spirit, But I’m holding out especially for Team 5ds vs Team Taiyou
I have a suggestion for next time: let's go back to the era of GX and Duel Academy to one of the strangest matches we might've seen, and with a bet on the line. Were Prof. Crowler and Bonaparte about to defeat Maximillian Pegasus? This Triangle Battle had a unique set of rules and we were able to see 3 signature decks in action, the Ancient Gears vs. the Toys Soldiers vs. the Toons. If Crowler and Bonaparte were able to work together as a team, from the very beginning, protecting each other and not attacking one another due to hate, would they be able to surprise Pegasus? What are your thoughts about this duel?
Ah, my two favorite episodes, Obelisk Assault and Obelisk Assault In all seriousness, minor editing mistake aside, banger episode, these are two of the duels my mind goes to when I think of Arc V and your breakdown was great!
Oh man if we’re talking about highly specific perfect counter cards. I’d love to see the breakdown of the entire Yugo vs Edo and Kite portion of the Yugo vs Yuri duel. Yugo had so many “NOPE” cards to respond to Edo and Kite’s entire combos.
Sora must have used de fusion to protect a fusion that was gonna be destroyed and Shay must have revived all the XYZ materials of one of his XYZ monsters with a trap card
The Arc-V anime was Very dinamic, not only because of action cards (many Hand traps you catch in the field) but also many traps with effects from graveyard. Vrains copied that and aged well. Few cards from old arcs had effects from GY
I think that when Shay spoke about enemies taking their teammates and they always get them back, it was from experience. Both him and Sora would have seen it and in Sora's case done it more than once. I think Shay was baiting him, trying to get him to summon or play something that let him take control of his Xyz monster so he could do exactly what he said he would, get his teammate back and summon something even stronger. Plot reasons 100% probably that, but I kinda like my version more XD
(Edit: I just saw another comment say it, so, Happy Birthday!) Great duel, definitely a highlight of Arc-V, and great video! Your content is so engaging and perfect for my walks and hobby work, keep it up! As someone who enjoys the English dubs for all the Yu-Gi-Oh anime, because I am unable to take any part of the Japaense versions remotely seriously (not that I take the show seriously at all mind you), you can just use the Japanese names if that's easier for you. I'm sure you have analytics behind it and if it helps with views, but I think you really only need to do that through 5Ds and maybe Zexal for consistency. I'm an incredibly rare breed and most people will prefer the Japanese version past that point anyways. Regardless, love the content and thanks for the vods channel as well!
*Happy Birthday!*🎂 Honestly I never paid attention to Sora and Shun second duel, I always asumed the duel returns to after Shun attacked with the 3 wise strix and then Sora summons Tiger in the next one. I never paid attention to what monsters Shun had in the field.
While I can't recreate the skipped turn sequence in the second duel, I can broadly guess the effects and reasoning that were used during that time. First, the only effect that could rationalize "mouse in attack mode" while accommodating the rest of the board state is: "during the end phase, if a monster(s) special summoned from the extra deck were destroyed this turn and the materials used to summon them are in the grave, special summon those materials to their respective owner's fields." Assuming Shun sacrificed two Force Strix to kill a fusion made from mouse and sabers, he would be willing to go 3 for 4, especially considering his last remaining monster needs the other birds to hope to survive the crack back. The best candidate for a mouse + sabers fusion is Frightfur Tiger, which would track with 2 Force Strix being sacrificed. Because of how Force Strix works, I can see a world where Sora sets a trap that lets him fusion summon during Shun's turn and plays it to change combat math on an attack declaration. If that explanation is true, we just need to explain 2 life point differentials and 2 missing Singing Lanius with 2 of Shun's cards and 1 of Sora's cards (he would have had to use 3 to fusion summon tiger). My analysis here is even fuzzier than my analysis of the revivals, but I could easily see those cards, plus the custom revival spell and fusion trap described above, costing that many life points and that many monsters to attempt to interrupt the other duelist's plays. Since Shun had more unknowns to work with than Sora, that explains why the board state ended in his favor.
The first match is one of my favorite duels in ARC-V, but my favorite is Shun vs Dennis, where he exposes him as a Academia agent, and destroys not just Dennis' monster, but the stadium itself, which was likely the most cathartic moment of Shun's entire life.
I don't remember much of Arc-V, as I only saw the beginning of the series, but I believe the show had some of the fastest and yet most complicated duels.
18:41 As a Spirit Charmers duelist, I can tell you he was ABSOLUTELY going for that. There's no better feeling in my experience than successfully pulling that off.
I always wondered. Could you just start physically fighting your opponent during one of these duels? Like could you just decide “I’m bring back shadow games, the old fashioned way” and just deck your opponent?
Can’t wait for the eventual “everyone vs Zarc”
Probably gonna be the series finale
Gonna go crazy seeing that duel get analyzed
And Yugi and Joey vs the Big 5

That's gonna break him, the amount of plays and what ifs is insane

Sora becoming sadistic when he’s exposed as someone from Academia will always be my absolute favourite part of the duel. I remember watching the duel for the first time and having chills when Sora switches personality and becoming so serious, being determined to defeat Shun.
The childish villain is always fun to see since they're kinda rare. Pegasus and vetrix are goated at this. Sora joins the roster !😂

There is a Fluffal Tiger.
@@omnientertainment5852 No, there's a Frightfur Tiger. There's no Fluffal Tiger.
Wish we got declan vs shay
One of my favorite duels from Arc-V, not just for the action but also the meta commentary.
**Shun and Sora going back and forth**
"These two titans are slugging it out, and the crowd is THRILLLLLED-"
**the camera pans to a bawling child**
"-except that little girl."
I think that scene was being done to emphasize that this isn't your average fun tournament duel, but something far more serious.
Hi everyone, RR player here, I must say, during the second duel's first turn shun made multiple huge missplays:
- The "infinite" loop of vanishing+fuzzy is great but not optimal as he had 2 singing in hand.
(both are in his anime deck, even if shown latter he has to have at least some amount of lvl 4 RR in his deck if he plays triple force strix)
Knowing how fragile RR are as a deck these 2 missplays are immensly costly even if they seem unconsequential.
@@hultraspitfire2151 no comment on leaving VL or adding BS? Okay
Havent figured it out fully yet, but qucik notes:
- If Sora manages to destroy the 2 Singing Lanius and then plays Leo that would do 1100 damage by destroying one of the Strix
- If a Vanishing Lanius attacks directly, that's 1300 damage that Sora takes
- If Edge Imp Sabers is summoned, it returns a Fluffal to special summon a Fluffal which is how Mouse gets onto the board in attack
- Sora obviously plays De-Fusion which is the only way currently I see of getting 2 monsters on the board during the opponent's turn
Dont assume the anime cards have the same effects they have in the real world
Yeah I went over the anime effects.
I'm stuck on what would return all of Kurosaki's grave monsters to either hand or field since they chain off each other, I guess something like Pot of Avarice works, but I dont think he'd play that :p
Sora doesnt have anything except De-Fusion that would bring back the monsters during the opponent's turn, but its easier to imagine a generic trap that could bring 2 monsters out.
For why Sora used Chimera, the dude just REALLY likes that monster. In the Japanese version of the show he always sounds extra passionate when he explains its abilities (especially the 300 atk point boost part for some freakin reason). So i guess he just played favorites :D
I swear, half the enjoyment in his life comes from watching his Chimera gain 300 ATK.
You know, I would be the most excited too if I see my Savage Dragon gain ATK by its own effect.
@@unknowed5048Yours gains a shit-ton of ATK and some negates. His gains only 300 ATK.
He was prepared for other people to try to find a way to use his own XYZ monsters against him
Edited: I see that you did include that you noticed he said that Injustice to reaffirm it, he was talking about both.

"For realsies"
do u mean revolution faclon air strike ? yeahhhh shun obviously doesnt have that card xDD
I love Frightfurs too. They are literally called "Death Toys" in the OCG. And yeah, the kids' reactions sell how messed up they are.
Also, Shun and his Raid Raptors are awesome. This was one dynamic duel.
Gimmick puppets, another scary archetype also have different names
Isn't it a play on "destroy" too? The pronunciation is more like "Des-Toy"
I think Shay could have won fairly early on in the duel but it was more important for him to expose Sora rather than win some stupid contest
@@ukotoa1639 that's why the outcome of a duel aftermath is far more important than who actually wins
I don't remember if he ever had the Frightfur squid, but that would be my best guess as to how he could've destroyed two of the Force Stryx and probably used a trap or something on the other Lanius.
he does use the squid way later in the series, so you're probably right on the money
Plus Sora lost because he also underestimated Shun too much because Frightfur Chimera’s anime effect had this included:
“When this card attacks or attacked: You can activate this effect; your opponent cannot activate Spell/Trap Cards, until the end of the Battle Phase.”
Meaning he would have stopped Shun from even doing anything on the word Go the moment he attacked.
Revolution force may also have the real world affect of being able to rank up using your own monster, but it was just never used
It's also not the only card Shay(Shun) has for the event his Monster get stolen from him.

Shun also has a rivalry of sorts with Kaito (who's from another school), who's Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon also revolves around stealing monsters.
The second duel is so goofy. Shun going for a "Force Stryx beatdown" strategy is very...funny to say the least.
A note on the RUM-Revolution Force:
As you pointed out Shun was prepared for everything.
This was one of, if not, THE best duel in Arc-V.

The fusion dimension infiltrators are some of the best in the series. Their decks reflect their personalities very well, and their character arcs were a ton of fun
One of the most memorable duels from the series. Well written, decently choreographed gameplay, music and voice acting was superb.
25:46 I think I actually have a bit of an answer for this question
Shay couldn’t know what Sora might end up drawing next turn, so he wanted to keep as many monsters as possible on the field so that Force Strix would have the strength to avoid being destroyed
If he instead decided to XYZ summon a monster, he would have to give up 1500 attack points on Force Strix, assuming he went with Rise Falcon based on his previous duel, making it incredibly weak and leaving him with a subpar lineup, as all it would then take for Sora to overtake Shay and ruin his lineup is something with at least 1500 attack points to overtake Fuzzy or Vanishing Lanius
Without knowing what else Shay has in his hand, this ultimately was his best play, as it allowed him to keep at least one strong monster on the field, as I assume by the positions of each monster, he planned to go for game next turn, using the 3 in attack to finish the duel
I love the joke of the little girl who is like so cute then omg that poor animal when the fusion happens

Damn bro really did come from the Zexal dimension.
you're my favorite comment of the video XD
🤔Shay is a great example of how the Heart of the Cards can literally turn the tide of battle. Wasn’t there a duel against 3 Leo Institute students where he boasted that he always wins no matter the odds even though they all had their ace monster, he was missing a lot of LP *and* he had no cards in his hand? Immediately before drawing the one card that couldn’t him the duel his next turn?
To me, probably the best example of hyper-specific cards would always be "Overlay Award."

Introducing Turbo to it was cool
Probably one of the best duels of the series
26:29 I'm gonna assume Mouse was just summoned by Sabers, but then again no cards in hand. So really weird.
I love seeing more duels from non-Duel Monsters seasons. I don't think the later series get enough love in the fandom sometimes
@@EthanKironus8067yeah the only ones confirmed are DM and GX (and 5ds if you add bonds beyond time)
@@aether6293 5Ds is relatively solid either way, given that Neo Domino is, well, Neo DOMINO, and it's actually canon--though obscurely so, since it was stated in a Japan-only 10th anniversary book or something (which I guess was kind of a BBT thing)--that Ushio, the guy who was Atem's first victim and inadvertently responsible for fostering the seeds of Yugi and Joey's friendship, grows up to be Trudge in 5Ds.
People I know pass over that in favour of taking 5Ds as being a long time in the future, which works too. I think it ought to be in the same timeline on the basis of Kazuki Takahashi's involvement if nothing else.
@@EthanKironus8067they are not literally in one contiguous timeline tho... If you watched a video made by spellcommander101 (I hope I remember the channel's name correctly), there he explained the timelines of all yugioh series
In his video, he even explained how zexal came to existence.
He also explained how other dimensions from arc-V came into existence as well
Then again, it not a literally headcanon. But I think it's a logic explanation actually

Oh, hell yes! I always wanna to see this duel being analyzed! One of the best duel in Arc-V. Thank you so much for doing this Sam!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
You know, it would be so cool for this video if Dylan from Yugioh Everything joined on it since he likes this duel as well
I wish the Dub got fully uploaded to YT.
That kid's monsters look like they're straight out of 5 nights at Freddy's haha
This is probably my favourite Duel in the entire franchise. Very excited to see it broken down.
Well done TGS Anime! Really really hated the fact that the animators cut away from Sora and Shay’s duel, TWICE!!!!! What were they thinking doing that?! In any case here are some suggestions for future duels:
Atem and Kaiba vs Lumis and Umbra
Atem and Joey vs the Big 5
Atem vs Gurimo
Kaiba vs Alister (both rounds of possible)
Jaden vs Aster Phoenix (round 2)
Aster Phoenix vs Adrian Gecko
Jaden vs Darkness (Season 4)
Yuma and Nash vs Don Thousand
Everyone vs Zarc
ARC-V, the show that needed about 50 more episodes to resolve the dozens of loose ends created by the rushed ending of the show. An absolute roller coaster of a show with high highs (like this Duel and others like Jack vs Sergey and Crow vs Shun and Yuri vs the GX Nostalgia and Odd-Eyes Raging Dragon’s debut) but also had really low lows (any time an Action Card was used and how tragically wasted the bracelet girls ended up for example). Definitely one of the weaker shows of the original 6 Yugioh series, even though it had great moments like this Duel
This is one of my favorite duels in the series 🔥🔥 both are such great duelists
Revolution force must have been pretty useful back when shun used to duel XYZ duelists.
Side note, I love that the real life version of the card kept the situational effect while adding a more generic one ao that it isn't hot garbage.
edit:wow, you said both things. Neat.
Love it to death! These are always my favorite watches ESPECIALLY when they are ARC V or ZEXAL.
Thank you @TGS.
Still holding out for a WRGP duel, you know simply Team 5ds vs Team New World (and Aporia), Team Ragnarok, Team Unicorn who made Yusei almost lose from deck out, the team that sabotages using a duel spirit,
But I’m holding out especially for Team 5ds vs Team Taiyou
Ragnarok goats
I agree with how the frightfur archetype works well with Sora and most of the archetypes work well with the characters that used them
The duel i'd really like to see you cover is Ai vs Yusaku/Playmaker. One of my fav villains and such a good duel with a great climax
It's always a treat seeing Sam analysis a duel that came our aftrt 2010.
I've been waiting for this one. One of the best duels in the entire series imo
When sora said "This isn't over", I just thought about kaiba's response to ziegfried when he said pretty much the same thing.
Ah, my two favorite episodes, Obelisk Assault and Obelisk Assault
In all seriousness, minor editing mistake aside, banger episode, these are two of the duels my mind goes to when I think of Arc V and your breakdown was great!
this was my favorite duel in arc v
(Edit: I just saw another comment say it, so, Happy Birthday!)
Great duel, definitely a highlight of Arc-V, and great video!
Thanks :D And glad you enjoy the content!!
I'm all over the place with the names, Dub for DM, GX, Zexal and then SUB for everything after.
Frightfurs is one of my favorite archetypes, and Sora vs Shay is one of the greatest duels in the anime
I couldn't wait for you to do a video involving Shay.
I love raidraptors
Just imagine if Shay had the MODERN Raidraptor support. xD
*Happy Birthday!*🎂
Honestly I never paid attention to Sora and Shun second duel, I always asumed the duel returns to after Shun attacked with the 3 wise strix and then Sora summons Tiger in the next one. I never paid attention to what monsters Shun had in the field.
The duels between Shun vs Dennis Macfield are also cool
I like to see if Bakura would had beat Yugi in their last duel when Zork was being bought back, for some reason I think Bakura could had won the duel.
THANK YOU this duel rocks, and is def one of if not for me the best duels in arc v
Yeah, not to mention if you watch the final arc duels (the duel vs zarc, the main antagonist) which is I think 10 episodes or more
A very tiny detail, but I loved how at 4:58 you decided to flip the screen to tell setting two cards!
18:41 As a Spirit Charmers duelist, I can tell you he was ABSOLUTELY going for that. There's no better feeling in my experience than successfully pulling that off.
man, I love these videos. Always looking out for them
Sora's deck is literally FNAF-esc characters, how have I not realized this before
If you play DL kozmo is starwars and wizard of Oz. Some archetypes are referenced
One of my favorite duels in Yugioh, and my favorite in Arc V
Next could be "Was Crowler about to defeat Jaden?"
I always wondered. Could you just start physically fighting your opponent during one of these duels? Like could you just decide “I’m bring back shadow games, the old fashioned way” and just deck your opponent?
OMG I love this duel. I would go as far to say it's my favourite duel in the whole of Yugioh
