Another excellent review. However, there is one minor mistake. At 3:13, you say AF Speed and Accuracy gets 10 out of 10, but your graphic at 3:17 says 9/10.
You are right! I think I need to fire the editor :-), oh wait that's me! This is the downside of doing these reviews at 10, 11 or 12 o'clock at night :-). I will make a note and update the score accordingly. Thank you for noticing this!
I really love your review very professional, clear and just all around awesome. I even saved it to my photography Playlist lol I hope to get this lens soon as I want to have the holy trinity of Nikon Lenses 14-24mm, 24-70mm, and 70-200 2.8 Oh and you are handsome too 😍
I think the Tamron beats it, in most of the review. But I had a tough decision as well. I decide to go with the 14-24 because it's been out so long and proved to still be a top notch. While I'm not too sure with the new Tamron that's why I haven't purchase it yet.
TeK RaVeN At the time of the review, the Tamron wasn't readily available, though Tamron's been on a bit of a roll lately - seems all the 3rd party manufacturers (Tamron, Tokina and notably Sigma) have really upped their game...
Yes indeed. I was thinking about getting the Tamron 15-30, due to the fact that it's cheaper than the Nikon 14-24. Do you think it's better than 14-24, because I'm using a D810 and I want to purchase my first ultra wide angle lens. :)
TeK RaVeN I can't really say, but may of the reviews seem to point in that direction. I'm sure I get one to review at some point in the future. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
Hi.. I just got it and your review helped ..thank you ;) I'm switching from Canon and picked the d810 with bunch of lenses and this one was today. Since it's been a year since this review, any further tips to make the most it and keep it from harm?! From Saudi Arabia with love & HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
Hi I have the lens, but have been a little disappointed with it. It may be I am not setting up my shoot properly. It would be great if you had details on the images that you took like, aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Also my images do look that sharp and lots of distortion. I also have the D750 as in this video.
Such an amazing lens! What is the difference between "Optical Quality" and "Quality of the Results"? Shouldn't they get the same score since they're almost identical? Thanks in advance for letting me know!
Great question - quality of the results is how the image cleans up with some minor tweaks in post - in the case of the 14-24 there's some minor distortion (very well controlled for such a wide angle lens) and some minor vignetting - it's a 1 click fix in Lightroom, but straight out of camera it's not perfect, it's just almost perfect :-)
I'm split between this and the Tamron... but for architecture (interiors mostly) it seems by some tests I saw, that the 14-24 is more controlled concerning distortion... Can you comment on that? I'm really suffering with the great - but mustache distorted - 18-35 nikkor....
I'm not going to buy that lens, but I decided to check out Naples, Florida on Google Maps Street View, and I'll be!...it is really beautiful. I took a virtual tour along 5th Avenue, and now I'm thinking that I'd like to visit there someday. It's a bit out of the way, but I think it would work as a stop from Tampa Bay to the Everglades. I hope I can get there one day. (I don't have the money now.)
Thank you for an excellent review. I'm wondering why you changed your final rating term from highly recommend to editors choice? Keep up the good work.
Anders, I decided that if a lens scores 48 or higher that it's so exceptional at its intended purpose that there had to be a level slightly higher than highly recommended - I went with editors choice.
I'm debating between this and the Canon 11-24 although the Canon isn't as universal. In fact, the Canon is useless with human subjects but great for landscape and interiors. Tough call since I could go either way. Any advice?
Stumbled upon your content and I must say, I really like your style of review. Keep up the great work. I have a question though. Have you shot with the Nikon 16-35 F4 G lens? I recently purchased it and am absolutely loving it. Considering I went with the D810, I couldn't afford to add the 14-24 to the cart, so I got the aforementioned 16-35. Thanks!
I haven't, though I'll probably review it at some point in the future. I shoot a lot of boat interiors and 14mm is ultrawide and allows me to get a lot in short of going fisheye. Sigma make a 12-24 for full frame and at some point I'd love to try that out.
Hi Darren - were your interiors tweaked much in post? Anything straight out of the camera? Were they single exposures or did you stack multiple exposures? Finally, have you ever done professional interiors using a micro four thirds combo?
That is a great question! All of the exterior night shots of those homes are single exposure virtually straight out of camera - there might've been some minor color correction and lens distortion correction in light room but that's it. As for the interior shots - we do stack exposures - primarily for the windows - rather than taking the time to set up lights all over to light the room appropriately - as we are a high-volume Real estate photography house and therefore have to work quickly - it makes more sense for us to take multiple exposures but it's not HDR. That and the files out of the Nikon D750 have unbelievable dynamic range. As for micro 4/3 and real estate, yes we have used m43 before with the Panasonic 7 - 14 mm f/4 in conjunction with the EM 1 from Olympus - in fact you can see some of the real estate photography examples in my review of the Panasonic 7-14 MM lens. It's a really great lens, but we stopped using it because it has some really funky flare patterns in bright sunlight - which you can imagine we get a lot of down here :-) We are actually waiting for the Olympus 7 - 14 mm F/2.8 lens, because for sheer size and weight considerations would much prefer to use micro 4/3's but there isn't a lens wide enough (18mm from Oly isn't wide enough for our style of shooting) that we feel we can use a regular basis. Assuming the Olympus 7 to 14 mm is of high quality and doesn't exhibit flare patterns in the same manner that the Panasonic does I can see us using micro 4/3rds in the future.
Darren Miles Thanks for your detailed reply. Regarding m43 - is the Olympus 9-18mm not of sufficient quality for interiors? I haven't seen any unusual flares...
simianinc Totally subjective - which is to say, for our style of shooting we prefer at least 16mm equivalent on a full frame sensor. That said, there are plenty of interior photographers who prefer 24mm. To us, it's a bit too narrow of a field of view. I have seen some shots using the 9-18 Oly right into the sun, and they look much better than the 7-14mm from Panasonic...
Still the 14-24 - I would absolutely consider the tamron if A) I were just getting into the business or B) My 14-24 dies on me - in the end, they're optically comparable, I already had the 14-24 when the Tammy was announced, and even though I think the Tamron is the slightly better lens, there wasn't enough to justify the switch....
The soon to be released Tamron 15-30 f2.8 VC , at only $1200 USD, might bring some real competition to the Nikon 14-24.
That'll be interesting, as Tamron, like Sigma has really upped their game lately, could be really good!
never ..haha youl send two back by the time you get a good one 😁
buying this lens shortly, thanks for the excellent review Darren.
Great video and wonderful photography
Indeed, very stunning photos.

Wow , stunning sample pictures , awesome video . and thanks Darren for also now reviewing Nikon lenses .
Happy New Year !
Thank you!!
DXO has tested the new Canon 11-24mm and still rates the Nikon 14=24 as optically better... But it does not go down to 11mm..

Would love to see your thoughts and/or comparison to the Tamron 15-30 f2.8 VC when u get a chance! Thnx for all your reviews, btw.

awesome & informative video ! thanks again

It's a great little place - sort of a hidden tropical paradise - it's still small - just not nearly as small as it used to be...
Thank you Sir ,
superb images.

Any experience with the 20mm 1.8g? If so how would you say it compares to the 14-24 besides the obvious aperture and focal length?
Great review, and amazing shots! What do you think of the upcoming Canon EF 11-24 F4 lens?
Thank you! I guess we'll have to wait and see on the Canon...

I like almost all the vertical lines in your pictures are in fact vertical. Great jobs. I owned a nikon 14mm, it is not easy to keep those vertical.

Thank you for this review.
Do you really mean that this is best wide angle lens?
I assume maybe best wide angle, zoom lens?
True, yes, I hadn't really considered it against prime wide angle lenses.
Love your review thank you so much for it :)
Thank you very much!
Anytime so glad I came across your video you have a new SUBBIE here routing for you!
No word for this sense .. its great .. thank you
will this lens work for a street photograph y
Good!
Lots of reviews saying Tamron 15-30 is better
+TheForge10 I haven't used it so I can't say, but I've heard similar rumblings :-)
+Darren Miles What do you think of the Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L for real-estate photography?
Tamaron is evn heavier than the 14-24mm... I just can't carry anything much heavier....
Have you checked it out already, are you still going for the Nikon or would you say there is a new king in the block with the Tamron 15-30?
What tripod u use for Nikon D750 & Nikon 14-24 at the video
Are you still using the 14-24 or the Tamron 15-30?

Thanks for the repy. I was thinking of doing the opposite. I own the Tamron and was thinking of going with the Nikon. MAybe I won't ;) @@DarrenMiles
Beam me up, Scotty !
Hi Darren, How does this lens work on a DX body?
Very well, but it'll have the look of a 21-36mm equivalent...
Tokina lens are awesome !
I think the new Canon 11-24mm will give Nikon shooters another great reason to switch!
good review...but am i the only English person who thinks they way this guy speaks is like Barry Scott?
panasonic 7-14mm is just as good; cheaper and smaller.
Are you the new Peter McKinnon?
Bahahahahahaha!
