This episode I service an ill-running 18K Rolex President from the 1980s. This ref 18238 is THE statement making and grail watch for many accomplished gentlemen looking to mark achievements or just feel good carrying that classic glorious golden heft on their wrist. That 36mm really wears incredibly well and comfortably.
The watch is running slow, has diminished power reserve and hasn't been serviced in who knows how many decades. It definitely needs some tender care this time to put it back to active timekeeping shape. Not difficult with the correct parts and the reliable Cal 3155.
I managed to get it working well and took off some years with light polishing. I try to be light especially with gold watches so that a balance is achieved between service durability and cosmetic appeal. Some parts were also replaced, but the dents in the bracelet remains to tell stories this distinguished owner wishes to remember and pass on to the next generation.
Thank you and as always feel free to comment, I'll try to respond!
The reality of that movement running for 30 years without a service is a testament to how reliable Rolex’s old calibers were. It’s no wonder why Rolex now states your movement doesn’t need a service until 10 years. Anyways, it’s always nice to see the king of Rolex watches, the President daydate.
Thanks for dropping by! I guess it also helps if the watch is not a heavily used daily beater. I have seen pristine 10yr Rolex safe queens without needing anything other than new lubrication applied. Yes that President is a grail watch for many people.
Sorry but Seiko run 40 ore 50 jeans without Service. Testament?. Luck no more
Its a testament to any watch movment that can last this long. My dad citizen 8110 didnt miss a beat after sitting unworn for 30+ years.
Mine is 32 years old and been serviced a number of times. I'm on my third band. These bands stretch. I wear it every day and am hard on it. 3.5sec/day and I never plan on selling it. Nice work on this watch!!!
Thank you pal, wear it in good health and spirits. Cheers and a happy 2024~
Excuse my ignorance I'm just learning about Rolex watches what exactly do you mean 3.5sec/ day ? Sorry if it's a silly question
@@DanAuto Since Automatic watch are entirely mechanical, there is always a certain give +3.5sec/day means that over the course of 24 hours the time would be 3.5 seconds too fast (compared to Exact time) -2.0/sec would meaby your watch beat 2 sec per 24hr slower so you would loose 2 sec per day if you were never to set it with the crown
@@DanAuto My watch gains 3.5 seconds each day. My rolex spec is -4 to +6 sec/day
Get the bracelet re pinned it’s much cheaper
This exact watch is what got me into the hobby about 25 years ago when i was just a teen! To this day its still my favorite watch ever made. One day i will own one!
Nice video. This is my grail watch - finally traded up to one made in 1995. Sadly it only comes out of the safe on special occasions. Lovely to see one being cared for so dilligently.
Nice! If I had one, it would be for special occasions too!
very healing to watch the restoration of 18238 after years of use! bravo!
Thanks for stopping by. Hope to share more in future

@@davidlee-hh4pr Sorry I do not accept jobs via youtube at the moment...
You're a real professional with patience and attention to detail.
I have this watch and hope when I get it serviced that they take as much care and skill as you, lovely job
Just had mine serviced. About 45 years old but serviced several times. I did not want it polished as the gold has become so deep and is really not badly scratched. Did get a new crystal. Running absolutely perfectly.
beautiful. to think that ANYTHING, much less something mechanical can be used every day for 30 years and remain functional and elegant is a testament to quality. anyone who questions why rolexes cost what they do should watch this video.
Fantastic…..repair craftsmanship of the highest caliber…..a credit to good horological work. 👍
Thank you very much!
My Rolex datejust finally stopped running after nearly 35 years of ownership. It's still the best watch I ever owned and someday I'll get it fixed.
It’s probably going to run like a champ once you take care of that.
Just want to give you respect and kudos for holding onto a timepiece that long. In our online wristwatch community, folks often part with watches and move onto something else.
@@RabbitWatchShop thank you I appreciate that my friend. Someday I hope to own a Rolex Daytona.😁👍
My daydate is from 1958, what a work horse.
Fantastic to watch you bring this back to life.
Great work, minimal polishing, awesome
Thank you! Cheers!
A Rolex watch needs no introduction, and the movement to change the day and date precisely at 12 o'clock in the morning is amazing. Its maintenance was in good hands and deserves thanks
Sehr gute und solide Arbeit, immer schön Uhrmacher bei deren kniffligen Arbeit zusehen zu können.
Nice work friend!
Great to see your attention for small details
Best Wishes Always

I have one sitting in the drawer needing service after 70 years. I guess it might need servicing as well.
Que belleza quedó el Rolex buen trabajo
This is a work of Art!
Beautiful work, and fantastic job! You Rocked this President! I may send you mine in the future to clean up!😃👍
Top notch work!Beautiful!😮😮😮
Thank you
To all the grey market dealers who say this is not an everyday watch, you should watch this! I am so happy it has been worn and loved.
Very nice work! Fascinating.
I’m not a huge Rolex fan, although I do love the GMT Master II and the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date. Both are classics. I’m much more of an Omega man myself though. My first was a Seamaster 300M chronometer that I bought new in 2001. I’ve always been extremely careful with it, and haven’t worn it every day, but I only first had it serviced in 2020, and it was honestly still working pretty much fine just before I did. But as with anything like that, small rubber gaskets and parts should be replaced periodically, and other parts lubricated. But it’s amazing how timeless (no pun intended) well-made mechanical watches can be. If taken care of and maintained, they practically last forever. Unlike say an Apple Watch or a Garmin, that are based on software, technology, and have internal rechargeable batteries that are difficult to replace. Eventually those types don’t get firmware updates anymore, and just stop working. Much more disposable over time. Even if “time” is 10-15 years.
Omegas are made in China
Agree with you. But now some cheaper Swiss are not so serviceable. With Swatch sistem51/swissmatic tissot, movement replacements are the name of the game. They will keep working, until swatch no longer supports them. Plastic escapement parts do wear out pretty quickly.
how much does this restoration cost? I have the same watch in the same condition :)
Dios lo bendiga excelente mucho éxitos.
Just recently acquired a 1985 for my approaching 40th. Watch was running, despite being "bone dry" according to the watchmaker who serviced it.
After service? Running half a second fast per day 🤯
That’s even better than COSC standards! I usually regulate to +5s/d.
@@awatchdiary wore it Wednesday, then again Friday evening. Just looked and it's off 3 seconds 🤷♂️
Amazing, thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow really enjoyed this one cheers hope to have one one day
Cheers, I wish you will get what you want soon
Had a 18038 before. Stunning watch but had to let it go.
Please do these kind of videos without music. I just want to hear you work
Great job! Beautiful piece!
Thank you very much!
Nicely done. Professional at best.
Thanks 👍
Отличная работа!!!
Great Work
Thanks mate
This is why you should pay for a high quality watch.
That´s pure art!
Thanks for the video!
This is my all time favorite watch. I noticed you displayed the band flex, could you show what is good bad and ugly about these bands. since if I ever have the opportunity to purchase it would be from used market.
These president bracelets are pretty amazing with the hidden clasp. It forms an comfortable golden, unbroken band around your wrist together with that reassuring heft. I don't know what bad to say about it, honestly. I think its simply Marvelous.
damn impressive!!
Good job 👏🏻
Hey there, just a lovely video! Do you know if the crown of the 18238 is gold plated instead of full gold? I've overheard this by an AD during a service for this model and was quite baffled 😅
Has to be solid surely 😮
I never cut one open before, it is solid, but I am not sure about the thickness of the gold. For sure, none has every had plating exposed as far as I observe, no matter how hard it's been polished
@@awatchdiary Little update: I've got my crown replaced and was able to take the old one with me. What the AD meant was that the outer crown is gold while the inner thread is a different material (he said some very specific name that I can't recall 😅). The new crown on the other hand is completely made of gold.
Wow! What a journey to perfection 👍 awesome work brother!
Thanks again buddy! Will try to share more vids soon. See you in your next video too!
It's one thing to have the movement serviced, but the bracelets will stretch over time, and having it tightened can be costly, as in another realm.
Very true.
Well done!🙂
Where are you located. Can I send mine for repair?
nice work!!
Thanks
wow! nice!
Next time you will also wear president bro
عندي نفس الساعة واريد صيانتها فهل من الممكن صيانتها وشكرا لكم
How much longer that bracelet gonna last y'all think?
Are there any old Rolex watches that can be affordable?
Brilliant work

Are you in the US?
I love to own, work on, and build watches, but I find that much gold gaudy.

Is is possible to visit your workshop in person? Where are you located at? Thank you.
you can send me an email with more details using the address on my channel page. Will see if I am able to help.

Wow, you can also read Chinese on the Timegrapher?
Yes, Mandarin is the 2nd language here in Singapore. Most Singaporeans can read chinese without much difficulty.
You are really professional can you repair my Rolex ?
Sorry I don’t do mail in repairs at the moment unless you happen to be in Singapore
🫡that was awesome
Thanks

Tuyệt vời ❤
How do I get my President serviced like that?
The first place to try would be your local Rolex Center. They do have trained watch service techs.
MUY BELLO !!!
Que Raro la Carátula se Parece A Un Omega Accutron??,
لكن انت اغلى من الوركس يا قلبي
Pretty watch but I hate metal bands. Too heavy.
Berapa harga rm2/- ke?
I'd prefer to look at the watch and hear a description of what's happening rather than reading subtitles.
Thanks for stopping by mate, noted with thanks
У меня был Ролекс и тиссот
Don’t shout but my daydate 1983 has never had a service. Stop shoutingggggg! I know, I know!!!
40 secs slow? The movement needs replacing.
The correction range of the "high" and "low" nuts of the Rolex free sprung balance is + - 150s/d using the Microstella tool: www.watchwallpapers.com/ms20.jpg
Podrías in formar me cuantobale😊
I am not sure the current market price, but should be about $20K USD depending on condition etc
Kordondaki ezik yerleri onarmadınız ama
牛逼
Please stop the pointless and intrusive lousy music. How can you concentrate on the video with the awful din.
Sir regards. I have a minor obsevation. You didn't show how you oiled or greased the barrel or train wheels.
I do not have a proper filming equipment. Everytime I oil the parts, because I need to get close to the movement, my hand will cover the whole video or my head/hair will hit the iPhone X set up just above on a tripod. Please subscribe, I will get new Lens and Microscope setup in future.
the 18238, the last “vintage” DD
