Considering the heavy traffic and swarms of pedestrians - including the curious ones - I'd say Waymo did quite well! I presume the car sent a distress signal at one point, and It's gratifying to see the prompt monitoring response.
The speed that the Waymo connects to Rider Support is impressive. It shows that Waymo is not shy to "ask", even when it can sort out the situation itself. The pedestrian was being a bit of a twat, he could have become a real nuisance, he didn't, but Waymo was right to trigger an alert. "The Mum/Dad that man is annoying me" alert. The speed that a human comes online shows that Waymo have erred on the side of caution with their vehicle/per support ratio. How many service support centres do we call for assistance and have to wait in line for five minutes before we are assigned someone? Waymo should be given more credit for their "total driverless solution" the vehicle is very capable on its own 99% of the time, but the rider support being in the background is very much part of the integrated solution and not just a get-out-of-jail card, it makes for a flawless experience.
Seems like it detects if someone touches it and/or gets too close while operating. Which makes sense. Trigger to push to rider support so it's sure someone didn't damage or get hit by it.
