Edgar that what this music is about it might of cane from slavery but its not about color sometimes it about your faith in him no matter what color you are God bless you and your family
Thank you Alan Lomax Archive. I remember sitting in a non-air condition church as a child watching the women fan themselves. No instruments, just strong beautiful voices. This is so wondeful!
Those were those days when your folk had you at church ALLLLL day! Sunday school, main service, dinner & then the visiting church. I can't count how many times I heard a pastor say, " I'm not gonna hold you" or "I'm not gone take up too much... of your time... " LawdHaveMercy 😂
Im only 22 years young and this song being sung by my people gives me chills to the point of tears, the pain & strength in this song is heard and felt across all generations.
We are the true Israelites of the Bible mainly the so-called blacks in America come from the tribe of Judah the " praisers" that is why there is such an anointing on these daughters of Zion to YAH be the glory forever and ever hallelujah... Shalom to everyone who reads this
Lol, we are descendants of all those tribes as so called "black" Americans and Carribeans, and all other "black" people throughout the Americas( from North America to Central America to South America, and specific tribes in Africa.
Now this takes me home. I dont do church no more but when I revisit songs like these, it gives me that soulful connection to my folk and our struggles. I'm 46, and I grew up in a little town in central Kentucky. My church was a small church that my great-great grandfather, who was born in 1857, was a founding member of. I attended with my great grandparents and my several generations of our family. To me, there ain't nothing better than to hear these ol' songs without music, the toe tappin guiding the flow of the voices, the elders hummin or moanin all while they creating with perfect imperfections. LawdHaveMercy!
The ancestors are there; their spirits make the air thick. They hear it -- this song and many others, we as a people have sung so many times, oft. Yes! And we FEEL it. We FEEL them. THEY were seeking The Most High! WE STILL SEEK THE MOST HIGH and just as they did, through all adversities and injustices and weaknesses and oppression WE SEEK HIM. We are ALWAYS His, black people. We are ALWAYS His, no matter where we are, Christian, Hebrew, Muslim, Hindi, Buddhist, Moorish, 5%er, ObiYah, Voudoun, Atheist -- we ALLL belong To The Most High, ain't never been OUR choice ain't never been UP TO US! It's not UP TO US! We are HIS! Praise Him!

Bless my older black chorus instructor for loving gospel, and making me sing it. Even more for teaching me alto, and being a hardass about it for my maturing voice! This is the song my sister and I got baptized to in the basement of my grandmother’s church, with the water down inside a trap door in the floor. The church is still there but was remodeled with a beautiful glass baptismal over the pulpit.
