- The Adeptus Custodes are a fan favourite for Warhammer 40,000 by Games Workshop and in this tutorial we show you how to paint a Custodian Warden from start to finish including how to add some variety to both their gold armour and their red garments to help add some colour interest. We also showyou how to easily paint the ebnergy blade on their Guardian Spear as well as how to paint their many blue gems which helps to add a spot of contrasting colour to the scheme. We hope you enjoy this one.

You know what I like most about your tutorials?
You lay out simple techniques that can be used by beginners and pros alike that are crucial to developing as a painter.
You have the tone of a teacher; calm, confident and encouraging.
Great work Mr. Rhodes and company!
Thank you 😊
I've watched your old Custodes video about a hundred times. This is going on the Warhammer bookmarks folder. Keep up the awesome work DRPA bros.
Thanks, will do!
The long awaited gold tutorial remake! The first one has been my gateway into the hobby, and I have learned very much from it. Now I've changed my recipe a bit, but this warm classic gold is like an happy childhood memory.
Please keep doing the good work, your videos are extremely helpfull!
Great to hear! And thank you 😊
As a banana player I have to say this couldn't have come at a better time as we're getting the codex in a bit (even though I play shadowkeepers)
Its wierd i just thought about ordering som custodes lmao and then this video came up
@@smackham4683 Yeah, same. I was just thinking about getting some custodian guard and duncan appear like the god he is and gives a tutorial (even if my paintscheme is mostly black with red and gold accents this is still neat).
Not to mention the new Shadow Throne box set is coming shortly
@@RotneybotOfficial True, although I does only contain 4 custodes models
Currently painting a custodian guard squad, so this vid was very helpful. I think I might get the Shadow Throne boxset.
Hey Duncan. I'm a reasonably advanced painter but I almost always learn some new tricks to add to my arsenal, no matter what model you're painting. Also your voice is very soothing and helps me cool off when I'm overstimulated. So I wanted to give you a heartfelt thank you!
Wow, what kind words. Thank you Ben
I washed my old custodes in earthshade, then years later used reikland gloss to try something new. Somehow it ended up looking really good.
Hardest thing with custodes is trying to make a base worthy of their majesty.
I use Word Bearers.
I had the same issue regarding their bases. I ended up going with marble contact paper!
I always throw my custodes on imperial palace themed bases since they practically do not leave the emperors side
@@sylthaya7571 actually they are accompanying Roubutte Guillyman all around the galaxy as well.
@Norn-Queen Kya there are some excellent marble tutorials out there. Just make sure to sand the base down because it's not smooth enough by default!
Duncan does the best painting tutorials. Thank you.
If you don't have access to a gold undercoat spray, I'd highly suggest doing a metallic silver undercoat. Anything but black or dark gray is good for gold. But a metallic silver or gold undercoat is best.
Admit it Duncan, this is a "notice me Henry" tutorial. We're all doing it, it's okay ;)
I find this ironically perfect timing of a video upload sense I just ordered afew custodians and paints for them
And they have a new set being released soon
@@onyxcrusader9536 Oh ya the "Lt. Custode cus everyone needs a Lieutenant XD, but jokes aside do like the design of the blade champion
By the Emperor.
I've been waiting for this one.
Thanks Duncan 😊
Our pleasure
ive just heavily invested in a custodes painting project and this video is brilliant. subscribed and liked. first time back into the hobby for some years but this video has helped me break down the process so clearly. thanks!
Retributor armour was always a nice metallic to work with. Another great production! Happy holidays, Duncan.
The quality of your videos (and painting) really is spectacular, well done to both of you.
I am very impressed with how good this figure looks. You did a fantastic job on it. Thanks for sharing this.
this is perfect. I'm just starting out my journey with custodes 😁 love your work Duncan ❤
This episode was amazing! So much to learn
Thank you Sensei for your videos and all the knowledge u share with us the help us improve.
May the two thin coats be with you, always! :)
Just bought my own Custodes set. Planning on making them Dread Host with a darker/almost bronze gold with black cape/plume. Super excited and have been nerding out on the lore. This is my first intro to 40k. Great video!
I wish you could post photos on RUclips, I am painting custodes in the classic colours and this video was a huuuge help, all your work are big help and a fantastic inspiration to painting.
I feel like your videos are one of the only if not few that actually show the colors as the are in person. Every other tutorial retributor armor always looks very bright and the same goes for mccragge blue. Love your tutorials though keep it up
Brilliant and well explained. I have a few gold armoured, zombie hunters I will be using this technique on. Thanks Duncan!
Better not let the Custodes know the Red is heresy! I still use your techniques from your old Cadian tutorial to paint up my IG army! Love your videos Duncan! Cheers!
About to start painting my army after work today!
Thank you!
Classic scheme and fantastic results as always! Happy Holidays, you guys!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you too 😊
The man, the myth, the legend!! No but seriously thanks for the guide. I see a ton of people undercoating with another spray can before they spray gold, glad to see I dont have to do that!
Love the power blade. Trying it on my own!
That is a very interesting way to paint the blade of the spear thanks for showing
Oh this will be a short one. Spray in retributor armour primer then wash in agrax or chosen dark wash. Paint blade silver. Base and done. :D
Perfect for 'battle ready' 😊
Hey Duncan! I love your videos, and you have always been my favourite, since I saw your House Griffith army on Warhammer Community. Being a House Griffith knight collector myself, some tips on heraldry, such as how they denote the High King, would be incredibly helpful! Thank you for all your work and inspiration!
Love your Videos Mate. I always wanted to have some custodes. Just for display if must. So I got myself a box. Waited forever for a rattle can of retributor armour (thanks Brexit) payed silly money for some paint and now with this tutorial I feel empored to tackle this project.
Emperor Duncan, beloved by all!
As a massive custodes fan and spent hours building and painting them do the head separately that face plate is a pain to paint in.
Duncans colour choices are great I painted a majority like this. I will say Duncan makes it look easy citadels paints can be dog pool especially retributor armour. I would suggest trying other golds from different brands I have used vallejos gold paint excellent. I have got the scale 75 golds recently looking forward to using them on my boys. Excellent work as always Duncan just maybe try using some different brands and give your opinion and advice on them.
Duncan is the man
just amazing!
Talk about timing! I just started a Custodes army.
I hope Henry Cavill uses this for his Custodes
I mean he should be playing space wolves..
@@Transatlanticism04 why would a Chad play the worst legion? Are you delusional?
@@SteamKinkage617638 Henry Cavill plays the character Geralt in the witcher. Geralt belongs to the school of the wolf... (hence space wolves) So no, im not delusional.
@@Transatlanticism04 but Henry Cavill has published on his networks how he finished painting a Custode, and came to show his small army of this faction.
Before playing Gueralt, he was already in the hobby with this faction, and the fandom has edited him like The God-emperor.
Superman plays the Super Men. It fits
I'm surprised GW haven't "complained" about you doing content. But glad they haven't for sure.
My friend want to begin WH40K with a Custodian Army, so thx for him :D
Okay, I can mix both the shade and gloss shade to create that satin effect over metal basecoat models. This will be handy for my next shading.
I might try that fleshshade trick for my marines in the future
That blade is sweet!
Thank you , DRPA .
🐺
Any chance of a grey knights tutorial, be interesting how you’d approach the blue steel colour armour 👍
I need that Two Thin Coats T-shirt !!
Magnificent
Really nice job Duncan ! One question if you don't mind me: can I apply this technique to the entire custodes army? Are there exceptions? Thank you so much for this video !
The Dan Abnett of painting 40k
I love your painting tutorial Duncan , they are always so detailed and helpful .
One thought though is that you could also release more generalized videos to gain a wider range of audience alongside the miniature painting tutorial !
Eg: releasing a how paint gold video , alongside the custodes how to paint video !
Could do but we figure that you can take the painting gold part from this video for instance and apply it to any miniature you wish 😊
Thank you Duncan, a great tutorial, adding from your previous on WHTV, the mix of matt and gloss Reikland makes all the difference, just completed a squad of Guardians and they look ace! What would you recommend for the white cords the Vexilla and some Guardians have on the Pteruges? I’ve gone white base, washed Drakenhoff Nightshade and re-established the white on the raised bumps but any advice to take further would be great. Cheers Fella!
just amazing. I have always had this curiosity, how long takes you to paint a miniature like this?
Step 1 ask Henry Cavill
I gave my Custodes glowing blue eyes. It goes well with the gold, doesn't clash with anything due to it being a small detail and subtly adds another color into the mix.
The thing i see is that you seem to be less tired, and thats a good point
Great as ever! 😄👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Can't wait to try it. My bananas are said to arrive in 5 days!
Great video Duncan! Im wondering though with the Reikland Flesh shade wash, could you mix it with maybe .25 parts technical ardcoat to get the same effect?
I'm thinking of starting a custodes army it's them or grey knights. Love the video
Very nice video!
A video on Reikenor the grimhailer is possible?
Greetings from France!
Hella nice
I pray to the 4-armed emperor that we get a GSC model painting next in anticipation for the new box
On the lightning effect on the blade, have you considered a gloss white to cause some additional glint and eye catching to the energy? I've found adding contrast to my finishes (matte, satin and gloss) where appropriate, can add an additional depth to it. Especially on vehicles, where metal plating may look like the same color, but over time or for repair jobs, the metals in various plates or areas may have a different level of gloss to them.
Hey Duncan, any chance you could try and tackle a stormcast or custodian with liquid gold from the Vallejo range? I’d love to see your take on them with those paints
Curious, could you add satin varnish to the gloss shade for the same effect? Does it work that way?
This is going to be really helpful when I get round to painting the Shadow Throne minis. My only worry is I am really bad at edge highlighting, I always seem to splodge it. Any tips on how to learn better control?
Hi Duncan! Get well as soon as possible! Can you make painting guide for death guard deathshroud bodyguard plz?
@11:14 "Next up we need some Khorne Red"
Heresy intensifies...
Nice!
Thanks!
Dunkan is litteraly the Bob Ross of mini painting
Little Kitten approved!
if you're painting a combat patrol would you do all these steps on all the models together so they can all dry and be ready or do you focus one by one?
@Duncan, petition to paint Napoleonic Cavalry plz my dude.
Seconded
I have my box of wardens sitting on the pile of To-Do. Now you give me no excuse, Duncan.
Any chance you will make an Alpha Legion painting tutorial?
@HenryCavill we're still waiting to see your Custodes :D
Can you make a video of you painting a custodes Shadowkeeper ?
Wud u be able to do a tutorial for the adeptus Custodes blade champion pls, im new to the hobby
Thx for your great Tutorials! You have a new Academy Member now. If i had a Wish, it would be you would paint Mozrog and Horticulous Slimux for us. ;) Greetings from Germany!
Awesome, thank you! And some great suggestions there
I wonder if anyone sees you're shirt and thinks *"ide rather wear one thick coat instead of two thin ones."*
Every day lol
With reikland fleshshade gloss been discontinued, I've heard gullimans fleshshade is very similar to a premixed gloss and standard reikland fleshshade mix
Do you recommend to spray each part individually in the gold prime
Hello Duncan
I am going to get back in to painting and I am having difficulty finding your paints anywhere in the UK is there a web site where I can get them from?
Rhodes should do Audible or Audio book.
Hello There :) one question, do you intend to make a "how to paint Grim Dark" Video? with your explaining skills it would be really helpfull. greetings ;)
Huzzah!
Question: Is there no final fixative spray used?
Now I can paint Kitten from popular series If the Emperor had a TTS device
Duncan, I am following this tutorial and am very happy with the results so far. I had a question about final protective varnish. I usually use some kind of matte spray to protect my minis, but I figured that would defeat the purpose of 50/50 regular and gloss shade. Should I use a semigloss spray? Thanks for your efforts.
Ok would you recomend getting gloss reikland or could i get away with maybe mixing some gloss varnish into shade before putting it on, or maybe guileman flesh contrast?
Total newbie here. Do you glue the miniatures? I did glue tyranids but felt I don’t need to for custodes
GW are selling a paint pack for these units. I'm wondering if this vid uses the same paints listed? Because I wish to buy the pack.
The first coat on the plume is mephiston red, but looks darker when applying mephiston red the second time?
Had to take a double take when Dunkan said "army painter" so nice to see him able to recommend other things than OFFICIAL CITADELtm it really unshackles his technique.
With regard to washes and paints not quite gripping the spray, does this generally affect spray primers, or is this more endemic to metallic spray?
Generally Metallics in our experience.
How do you get so much ink on your brush for mixing?
What would you use now that reikland flesh gloss is not available
So I noticed you switched to a wet palette when you started painting the red ( Mephiston, Khorne, doombull) any reason why?
Washes, metallics (and sometimes contrast/speed paints) don't work too well on a wet pallet.
Washes and spped paints are allready quite thin and they will flow pretty messy all around on the wet pallet.
Metallics aren't that bad but some say the metal flakes will be in other paints on your wet pallet, some say it won't.
That's why he uses a tile for it. A oiece of paper ir wood works for this to. Be careful with the paper though. Make sure something is under it so the color wont make a mess on your table.
For acrylic paints he uses a wet pallet because it keeps the paints moistured and you can use them way longer. Highly recommend a wet pallet for painting.
How long does it take for the paints to dry?
Hi @Duncan. I tried to paint an ALBINO (White) wild pig with classic method. From orks Savage Boarboy . My paint looks so flat. I mean, it seems that it is unfinished. Could you give some tip? i think i should have done a FADED BASE... Thanks a lot! elisa.
