I, as a white male, have had a drivers license for 30 years. I have been pulled over 4 times in my life. 2 of those times I had a gun in the car with a CCW permit. All 4 times I was doing something wrong. 3 were speeding, one was rolling a stop sign. (I completely barely slowed down on a back road, totally ran it) I got 2 tickets in those 4 stops. The 2 before I had a gun coincidentally. Also both of those I was out of state, so there was no chance of me fighting it, so I knew I was getting a ticket. The 2 where I had the gun and let the cop know, I was let off with a warning. It absolutely blows me away the reality of a black man in the states. It is going to take an effort on all sides to help the problem though. We first have to admit there is a problem and stop making excuses.

I lived in the US just barely 2 years ....l was stopped twice....both times there was nothing wrong. The first time it was around 2am, l could tell that the officer decided to follow me from side of the road. I made sure l put my foot on the pedal at 60mph, I honestly knew he was following behind,after a while he pulled me over...l immediately stopped on the side...he said to me: "you were doing 66"....l gasped from my surprise, when l started talking and he realised l ain't no American....l sensed a sigh of relief from his response.... basically....l responded by saying..."lm really sorry,this area is hilly,l may hv gone over 60mph by mistake"....then he said; "oh, which country are you from?"....l said, "Botswana"....then he said..."ohhhhhhhhhh man!! The diamond country, the peaceful one?" I said...."Yes Sir",with a smile & relief as well,coz now...l knew ticket is no more. He let me go,and told me how Virginia is nice & l should visit more often!......but man! I was sooooooooo scared,coz there were to many stories of police shootings then(2015). Saved by the diamonds....nah nah nah.... singing all the way to my destination....
Second: l was in my locality. Ames,Iowa....it was a lady...she pulled me over,same thing...my accent, checking if l had driver's license & proof of insurance....we exchanged numbers...we are still friends now ...just friends by the way....

he drove consistently 1or 2 mph under the speed limit. They pulled him over anyway. He was always polite and congenial and so they let him off "with a warning" for being two or three mph UNDER the speed limit. apparently, his slow driving to church with his daughters in the back seat was likely to be a problem for the cars behind him. (small town so there were no cars behind him) . We always knew what was going on. It happened so often. I witnessed it several times as a little girl during our 8 years in the states.
The cop almost killed the child too. One of the bullets hit inches away from the kid. How is that acceptable in a situation? I don't care if he had or gun or not, its insane to shoot up a car like that with a kid in it.

Cops are not supposed to fire at a suspect that is near or in a crowd because they can hit an innocent bystander but, for some reason in this case it does not apply.

Truth. I put my hands kn the wheel and i freeze. Even one time the officer was lying, i had my hands at 11 and 12 while i was yelling g at him at dispatch.

Non-black people may have compassion or empathy but they will never truly understand the depth of the bias black people face on a daily basis. Not just with cops but in stores, the corporate world, or just walking down the street. Thank you for using your platform to bring awareness, if nothing else.

I´m a swede, and I do feel angry from time to time because our justice system seems to "weak" sometimes. We do not punish people that commit bad crimes with enough time behind bars.. but in saying that. It means less innocent people get jailed.. and it also means that bad people (officer or not) get convicted if they deserves it. And this cop deserves it.. badly. He is a disgrace..
I will probably never understand the true extent what you guys face but videos like this hit me hard. I live in a majority black neighborhood and whenever I video like this pops up it makes me feel sick that this could happen to any of my neighbors or friends for no reason at any time. What makes me sad is not the racism by the cop (that just makes me mad) but at the widespread exception of racism within the police and legal system all across the US. So much so that they dont even give the cops a 'light punishment' and instead let them walk free.
But I dont know what I can do day to day to help besides just being a good person and supporting your rights whenever I see something come up.

Common sense should tell you, that a person who declares that he has a gun to the police, has no intention of using the gun on the police.
While being perfectly calm, JUST having handed over his insurance card, now looking for his license... being stopped for some problem with his *breaklights*... with his girlfriend and child there...
I do think some paranoia and fear comes with the territory of being a cop, but the levels in the US against blacks especially are way way extreme. There's a lot to change with the whole society to really fix it, but de-escalation training is desperately needed immediately!

That is wholly incorrect. If the cop tells you to stop moving after you've made that announcement, sure, but the cop had already asked for his license. As he was reaching for his license, he informed the cop he had a gun in the car. The cop told him not to pull it out. Since Castile was not pulling out the gun, he continued to pull out his wallet. He never disobeyed the cop.
Oh and the cop PUSHED HIS GUN INTO THE CAR AND FIRED AT POINT BLANK RANGE, MULTIPLE SHOTS. Yeah, this was not a "fear for your life" moment. This was him being a racist shitbag.

Andre Knowledge357 incorrect. The cop did not have the gun pulled until he started to shoot. There was no span of time between him pulling the gun and starting to shoot. It also doesn't matter, there is no law that says you have to hold still after informing a cop that you have a gun, and the only thing the officer said was to not reach for the gun. Philando Castile was not reaching for the gun, so he did nothing wrong. He was reaching for his wallet to show the officer the ID because the officer had fucking asked for his fucking ID.
His behind the scenes are better than the actual show. Damn.

He is very hesitant about playing the race card in his show. One of his first shows was after the shooting in the black church and he ducked away. Which makes sense as shows with black hosts get seen as black shows too easily.

One of my highschool English teachers told us about how she got pulled over once while driving her son and his friends home after basketball practice.
The officer had her walk away from the car before really talking to her because he thought that, as a middle aged white woman, she might have been car jacked and kidnapped by a bunch of black teens (her son and his friends).

You remind me of a friend who was applying to Harvard Law School, and attended a class there during her visit... the professor asked the class about a situation with a cop pulling over a car with a black man and white woman in it solely because of their demographic details.
One student in the class thought it was justified because "It could be a hostage situation."

The only consolation in Yanez not being found guilty was that he will never be an officer again as he was fired the very day he was found not guilty of the charges.

I am a white woman. I was pulled over for having black people in my car. The officer wanted to make sure 'everything was okay'. We were on our way to class (college). Did he think they hijacked me and forced me to drive them to class with me? It was weird and awkward.

I'm Latino, grew up in a black community.
Back in highschool I used to kick it with one of my best friends (who is black) every day in his front porch. One day police saw us chillin and walked up to us and told us they receive reports of a latino male and black male stealing a bicycle around the neighborhood. We didn't know what to say other than it wasn't us but they kept asking us questions until they decided to take us in. So he arrested us and wrote up a report that we did it. We got out 12 hours later when their was lack of evidence to charge us and mainly because our parents were threatening to file a lawsuit.

Nothing about what you said is true. The point of this video was to talk about how life is very different for people of different races, even if they are in the exact same situation. Why is it that a white person with a gun is treated differently than a black person with a gun? Is it because we have equal rights?
Also, most people don't "determine [their] wealth". There is a very small percentage of people who experience socio-economic mobility, but that is not the reality for most.

I saw the dashcam today. I was almost sick when I thought about how the jury saw that footage and still said he was innocent. Seven fucking shots after he told him to get his ID. Seven shots and then he told the other officer that he did it because he was nervous.
If you already watched through the dash cam video, I wonder how can you say this. The cop did not ask him for his ID after he informed that he has a firearm. The only thing the police said is : "Okay, don't reach for them." He did not demand anything from Castile after that sentence. Castile didn't stop his movement after that and made the cop panic. While I agree that the cop should act calmer in the situation, I think Jury decision has it's merit. 7 shot is a lot, but with a man in panic mode, anything can happen. I'm not saying that the cop is right to get panicked in that situation, but I can't judge him because I were never in that same situation as he is. He might not be the man for the job for sure, but saying that he is a murderer is just too simple of a conclusion.
The actions show he isn't fit to wield a weapon as an arm of the state though. While it may not be murder. It is definitely an unlawful killing which at the very least should see the guy lose his badge (even temporarily for psychiatric evaluation and retraining) the guy isn't safe as a police officer.
Vu Nguyen What the cop should have said was "stop moving for a second" or "freeze" or "stop reaching". Saying "don't reach for it" can be interpreted as "don't reach for the gun" which the victim wasn't doing in the first place - he was following the cop's original order, to get his license, so in essence, he WAS following the cop's orders. The cop was poorly trained, and in his panic he gave bad instructions, which just made the situation worse. The cop was completely at fault.
Castile did give something to the cop after that cop ask for his license. While I'm not sure what that is, I would assume that he already did give the cop his ID. So there shouldn't be any other order after that except don't reach for it. I'm not denying that the cop did give bad instruction but at the same time, "completely at fault" is not the conclusion either. I can always say that Castile should stop and ask one more time if he is not clear about what he should do. I'm a gun owner and we have been taught that in a traffic stop, don't make any sudden movement and confirm with the cop every movement that you are going to make before you actually do it.
Also, everyone agree that the cop is not fit for field job that's why he was moved to a different job. He was not prepared for the job as police officer for sure. Still, I would like to point out that the way Trevor re-tell the story can clearly make people who don't their serious research give the wrong conclusion for the situation. If he is gonna make a discussion, then please tell the truth as close as possible before trying to make a discussion.

I'm Puerto Rican and my sister and I came out fair where the rest of my family did not. Very hard to hear about the harassment they get. I feel you, never been pulled over once, my brother however? Got a weed charge as a kid, pulled over now like every other week.

He has not experienced the brutal deaths black people have faced, and nothing he's experienced could compare to how cruel and unjust that is. But I do think think it's important to note that he was considered living proof of a crime in his home country, he lived through apartheid for a few years and that experience gives someone a different point of view, that is why I like to hear his thoughts. I in no way believe he has felt the pain of the victims he speaks about, but I think his ability to sympathize (like most people can) and speak out about these things is respectable.
Jennifer Chavez it also plays to why he actually has a voice. He's been an outsider and comes from that point of view, and sadly, that means people are more likely to listen to him than an American person of color, who actually lived their whole lives with it. As with a lot of things, it is the victims that usually don't have a voice. They are always dismissed as being unreasonably biased to the point that some will rather project a mental image that their words mean "I want to be treated as superiors" even when their real message is reaching for such a low bar as, "I just want to live." Apparently, they ask for that directly, nobody believes they mean exactly what they said. An issue that affects so many in that position including totally different demographics than POC. If there is one thing that is objectively true about many of us (humans) in positions of power, is the lack of empathy to listen to those most affected.
The only true fix, for the general empathy thing, is for minorities to not be minorities anymore. Because many are only willing to believe what is in their local vicinity and limited spots they spend time in. I believe a lot of them are good people, who wouldn't tolerate seeing this stuff in front of them, but have a low chance of seeing those situations come up . That's just due to obvious statistics of it being rare they see a minority. One of the majority is seen everywhere and thus people easily see them for the diverse people that humans, in general, are. Only then will people see true divisions of culture, instead of lumping them as a skin color, or other trivial difference. Considering a person born and raised in Cumberland and a person born and raised in Baltimore (in the same state), regardless of skin color, is likely to have as diverse a culture difference as someone born and raised in Scotland would be from one in Northern Ireland. Sadly, the only joining aspect of culture, as spoken for POC, is the part that deals with varying levels of discrimination. The only "culture" they may have in common.
Jennifer Chavez There is truth in the experienced part. Trevor Noah spent his childhood in apartheid. Even when apartheid ended, he was still discriminated against by by blacks, whites, and colored. If you read his book, you'll find he's aware of racism's forms and systemic damage.
Looking at some of the comments is disheartening. There are many offers of what to do to decrease your odds of getting shot. To me, that's like teaching girls how to try not to get raped. No one should have to change their lives and live in fear that today is the day they didn't do it well enough. To pretend that this isn't a real problem that is obviously systemic is beyond ignorance.

The worst I heard in Czech republic is a cop who pretty much laid down on a protester (a girl who was super skinny) and then accused her of harming him, a very butch man, by dislocating his arm or overstretching his shoulder or something. It was an approved protest that simply crossed location with a march for the exact opposite cause. It happened because the march refused to walk around the few sitting protesters, the police was forced to try and get those sitting protesters, who were there legally, to move.

That really hurt my heart, too, Jasmyn. I'm amazed at the lack of empathy and abundance of cruelty in American comment sections. I will never believe this is the best place to live (for brown people, women, gay communities, disfigured/disabled people, etc). People let the authorities (government/police/corporations because they run the politicians with bribes/lobbying) gain too much power, and I'm not sure there's enough time to undo that. I think they should rather be more selective about who they deem fit to protect and serve the community as a police officer. As far as I know, every fucktard who is an American citizen with no major criminal background can become an officer. This is obviously not enough. There should be more thorough background checks.

Yes, so true. I read that average education for police officers in the US is 20 weeks. In Denmark it is 2 years, which includes 8 months of on the job training in a local police station.
I also believe that US police officers needs to learn how to calm down a situation instead of resorting to deadly means.

I have a white friend who has told me several times about a story where he was riding with some of his black friends and they got pulled over and the cops searched all of his black friends for drugs and did not search him, and he was the one with all the weed and pills on him. In my opinion they wanted to display blatant racism just because they could and they were pretty confident they would get away with it. It's rough out here for a brother, you gotta watch your back for the crooks and the police.
My neighbor is a (Black) police officer that I talk to from time to time and I asked him what is the best way to let them know that I have a gun in the car with my CCW and he advised me not to even mention it, just let them find it if they do a search, and that's what I've done ever since.
These cops have horrible training, Talk about conflicting requests. I need to see you ID etc but don't reach into your pocket. Whats next- Don't move or Ill shoot but put your hands above your head. Or why stop there- Police- if you Stop or move I'll shoot! He was nervous because he is scared of Black people because his parents raised him that way or he never went to school with any black folks. The officer handled that horribly at best or at worst forced the situation by giving him conflicting orders. They hold a lot of power when they are armed. They need to be able to keep a calm mind. They need to be given more training. When you panic you are more likely to make mistakes and those mistakes can't be put right. Although I imagine some, (a statistical likelihood) abuse that power and go looking for trouble to feed some twisted ego of theirs/

I am white and I understand that. Right before seeing this I saw the dash cam footage of this and it almost made me sick. I'm scared to be pulled over now. That fear may be irrational, but it's still there.
That is the saddest part about all this social media, realizing just how scared people are of the police. That black parents feel the need to drill into their CHILDREN how to behave around cops. It's great that we are being exposed to this as a whole, but also so disheartening.
Not that irrational, though. White people are pretty well shielded from it, but there's still some cops out there jonesing for an excuse to kill someone and get away with it. Today, that excuse is it was a black guy, but maybe they'll settle for something else another day. It's not very comforting.
I wonder if I can follow Trevor's idea and just have my arms hanging out of the car if I get pulled over. It's summer here in the US after all.
I Grew up in St. Paul. I didn't know Phill, but my good friend did. He says he was a good man. Phill worked at a school. In Minnesota you can't get a job at a school unless you are a good citizen. Here's my experience as a white man in Minnesota.
I used to live in a crappy neighborhood which was mostly black. At first I didn't like them (still don't in that area) because they were gruff, used a lot of profanity, and were just different. That doesn't really matter, but it's how I feel. My first car was a Pontiac and I would get pulled over all the time. The police would even act confused or hesitant once they saw me as they would usually bark commands and intimidate before they even came up to the window. The Pontiac was the car of choice for black's in the neighborhood, that's why I got pulled over. I moved to a better neighborhood, never got pulled over. My friend who lived in the same city drove a Crystler, was white, never got pulled over. So driving the car preferred by blacks got me pulled over (I have no crime record, either violations of statutory). My other friend became a cop, showed me the manual they used as reference and I read the "table of encounter protocol" In all situation if they show the slightest of aggression i.e. are even talking loud, you escalate the threat level *for your protection* and the safety of all officers. You mix this escalation of violence protocol with the perception that blacks are hunting down police (which my police friend says is true and other people I would call conservative who watch Fox says is true, but the UCR from the FBI says it's not) and you get a paranoid, jumpy, escalating violent situation. This is from a pretty liberal State. Now that I have lived it within the black community I can say thank god I'm not black because I would most likely be dead by now. It's an institutional problem on the violent part which effects both white and black, but media presentation and perception make it a far more black problem that white. They are separate issues but have culminated in gross over representation of blacks being in danger for being black.
When more white begin accepting there is a problem then that's the only time America will change. shame shame shame that majority of white people walk around unassuming and could care less about the systemic injustice going around. esp KKK in the justice system starting from the current us attorney general, employment esp among black educated people and who can forget the press whether liberal or conservative.

As a minority in this country, I tell all the kids I mentor and all that that we don't have the right to act a fool. Go to a bar and get drunk and decide to walk home? Can't do that. Pick up a toy gun in a Walmart? Can't do that. Go out to the corner store to buy skittles and an ice tea in your hoodie after dark? Can't do that. All things that a young, white man could do without even a second thought.
I grew up in a mainly white town, and there were a handful of times my friends and I would be walking home from the local bar, goofing off, roughhousing, etc - only for cops to stop us and make sure I wasn't robbing my white friends. If I was walking home alone, in the mainly white suburbs, and I showed the least bit of swaying while walking while a cop drove by? Got stopped the few times that situation came up as well. I stopped drinking when I was 25 because I didn't need the hassle of every (predominantly white) stranger wondering if I'm sort of menace when I'm out in public and having a good time.

Officers told she was holding a knife (which could be a kitchen knife didn't saw any footage). They were fully equipped with tasers and other nonlethal weapons yet they just shot her straight up.
It was a powerful experience to watch this video, and I don't even live in the US. But I read the stories and am horrified. I am glad Trevor is using his platform to point out very important stuff in such an extraordinary way.

I had two friends pulled over in the same month. Both were 17. One was driving. He saw the police behind him. His friends told him to gun it. He took off and was chased. After a while, he was cornered in an alley and was pulled from the car at gunpoint. He was talked to, warned, then released.
The other friend was a passenger in a car. There were 3 others in the car. He was removed from the car. He was asked his name. He wasn't in "the system" with a previous contact, so he was presumed lying. The cops took him into the station, holding him for not identifying himself (he did, but didn't have a drivers license or ID, not at all, so certainly not on him). He was held overnight, until a family member could show up the next day and confirm his identity. Literally arrested because the cops presumed him to be lying about his identity.
Guess which friend was white. Guess which friend was Black.

Where are all the good people or bar that the rational people? Am I wrong in thinking that I should try to further the community because all I keep seeing is us against them mentality and I'm fucking sick of it. Trump voters against non Trump voters, Republicans against Democrats, US vs the world. I guess it's no surprise seeing as the culture we've grown in has nurtured deep seated paranoia and extrinsic desire but what kind of demented person are you to manipulate people into being paranoid as hell just so you can make a quick buck? You're losing on pathos and ethos, two avenues you rarely ever win and what good is logos when a fraction of the population can even follow that train of thought to the end? The good guys are always supposed to win right? What a sick fairy tale because the good guys cant seem to get their heads out of their asses. And no offense to Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert, and John Oliver, fucking love the three of em even if sometimes they're a bit biased, looking at you John lol, but the fact that you are the three people I have to look to to get a good take on the issues I'm being inundated with is backwards as hell. And I'll be the first to say that good and bad are but names but they do represent the duality of a majority of problems that plague America today. It's as easy as saying good is what is good for society and bad is the inverse in this case. So if we stick to these definitions we can see that the majority of political decisions made since January, hell since McConnell stripped Merrick Garland of his nominee for unfathomable reasons, or even since Trump won the RNC are fool hardy and bad. It's not like there are valid arguments for most of the political systems actions other than self gain, and sure that's how the founders balanced it but it was supposed to use that to drive American policy in the right direction, not into this farce stage show. At the very least I implore you rich bastards, even though you won't read this, that you need to take a look at this from simply an economic position if not from a humanitarian one. Taking shit away from the poor and middle class just makes it that much harder for them to fulfill your desires. If they all die from pre-existing conditions who will be left to clip your toe nails? It's much more complex than that but the sentiment reamains the same even in the complexity of modern economic thought. Everything isn't automated just yet so you can't replace us that easily. All I'm gonna say is that the decision by the jury makes me sick... 99% of the people I've seen the comments of said that the officer was at fault and that the guy should be alive (even if some argue that both parties were st fault). How could anyone not see the mistake this cop committed. I know he panicked and he didn't have the intentions to kill the guy when he first got out of his car but he did make a mistake and now an innocent is dead. He should face some sort of prison time or something in the legal limits.
