What a pleasure to share the sacred and profane the immaterial and profound truth about painting, humor, art and communication a gold mine for those of us you still have a place in ourselves for wide eyed wonder. thank you for that Steve and Eric

I'm a fan of Fischl's work. I like his casual approach to intimate and difficult to capture subject matter. Even if I love the artist, as I do here, artist lectures can be boring. So Steves role here was interesting. I didnt feel like he had anything to teach me about art, and he rambled too much, but I did appreciate how he made this a conversation, not a lecture, and created an environment for spontaneity.

Not gonna lie, I chuckled when the lady took the podium because I thought "The Broad" was a descriptor. I blame televesion.

@hiimbrady: That's interesting. It occurs to me that I've never actually heard anyone say "broad" in real life conversation --only in movies. I wonder whether there's any place you could still go to hear that. New Jersey (?) Brooklyn (?)

I give Steve Martin credit for making efforts to learn about and appreciate fine art. The problem here is that Fischl simply doesn't deserve Martin's attention. So I have to conclude that Martin still has a lot to learn to know how to avoid and weed out the fakers and poseurs. Just because artists like Fischl have public recognition and I suppose successful careers, does not mean they are any good or deserve attention from serious collectors. I find Fischl's paintings just atrocious and amateurish.

An almost entertaining interlude between 2 very postured "art celebs". What I find irritating and offensive is how careful they are not to risk, just a little, beyond their fluffy reflections on any issue that might actually matter to thoughtful people. Fischl's sanitized 9/11 comments were a gutless dismissal of the fact that the official explanations of the event made no sense. These types seem to withdraw like turtles into their shells when it comes to exercising a conscience and using the platform of their status to rattle the cages of the owners. Without a conscience - art sucks - no matter how brilliant the work may be and Mr. Martin's anxiety concerning his sustained success came at a great loss to the human being.

Martin monopolizes, enjoyably and annoyingly at once, way too much, and an intelligent artist must play the straight man, and listen and listen and listen. Even to banjo-playing.
