Add all 5 million of his appearances on SNL (pre-political blatant partisanship from SNL) to that comment. Brilliant writing/comedic timing on his quest appearances! Totally agree SM is a master.
As an accomplished musician I have to say that Steve Martin is an outstanding banjo player, the man can flat out pick it. If you've never seen him play I highly recommend looking it up on here and watch the man tear it up.
What an ingenious and hilarious appearance, and somehow I don't think I've seen this before! For all the accolades Steve Martin has received in his career - he's still underrated. One of the best entertainers of ALL TIME.
Steve Martin is probably the hardest working comedian in the world. Even on a Tonight Show appearance, he works tirelessly on perfecting his appearance.
That bowling go trophy was the PERFECT choice Martin is brave and a genius Johnny was the greatest late night host of all time I will pray for America. Please pray for me. God Bless you.
one of the highlights of my stage hand career was meeting one of my childhood heroes of comedy Steve Martin and learning what a absolutely magnificent banjo player he is I used to consider the banjo just a comedy prop like the ukulele Mr Martin educated me on the magnificence of a well played banjo Steve Martin is not just one of the finest living comedians he is also a master musician.
Back then, if you asked someone who their favorite comedian was, you would most likely hear either Steve Martin, Richard Pryor, or Robin Williams. While I was a fan of all three, Steve was at the top of the list. When he first started, there was no one like him. Johnny was the best at what he did. Unlike most other hosts, he knew when to not interrupt his guests. He trusted Martin enough to just let him do his thing, and smart enough to know where Martin's gags were going, and play the straight man when needed. The only other host that comes anywhere close to Carson, in my opinion, is the UK's Graham Norton.
He's sitting next to an incredible legion Mr. James Stewart! Imagine what this Old Hollywood heavy weight is thinking while watching this! Would love to hear HIS impressions! lol!
james stewart died July 2, 1997 in Los Angeles, California, USA (cardiac arrest and pulmonary embolism following respiratory problems) lived a long live ! died 16 years after this was aired .
Steve was always so prepared for his TV appearances. Most of the time, he prepared months in advance. Thus, his appearances were performances. Only in his older age has he become comfortable/confident enough to “wing it.”
The irony is he never received an Oscar for a movie, but in 2014 was awarded an Honorary Lifetime achievement award from the Governors. And his acceptance speech was funny too, though not like this, and he almost cried a teeny when he got to his wife.
Colossal creeps Colbert and Kimmel, along with that grotesque freak that follows the ineffectual Fallon on NBC - are among *the most* reprehensibly despicable characters to ever have disgraced the small screen.
Steve is great, but seriously, anytime Jimmy Stewart is on, you might as well stay in the dressing room and just let Johnny talk about It's a wonderful Life with the one and only.
I remember that show, and it reminded me of him in The Jerk which I thought was so friggin hilarious and he was AWESOME! Carson .....CLASS ACT! To bad the late shows now are way to political, not funny and the hosts SUCK! Well, except for Gutfield.
The film was a commercial failure, grossing slightly more than $9 million at the box office against a budget of $22 million. Now, that’s embarrassing! Well, excuuuuussssseeeee meeeeee! 😂
Really do miss the Johnny Carson show. It was the best ever.
Yes, indeed!
Every time Steve showed up on The Tonight Show it was a masterclass in comedic timing. He absolutely owned the slot, not a minute out of place.
When writers really knew how to WRITE. Today, it's just plain crap.
Add all 5 million of his appearances on SNL (pre-political blatant partisanship from SNL) to that comment. Brilliant writing/comedic timing on his quest appearances! Totally agree SM is a master.
@@nicknack5095 100% agreed. SNL is a tiny shell of what they once were, and the Martin appearances are legendary.
@@trvman1 Absolutely. 🎯
He is pretty average.
Adorable. 😊😁👏 And Jimmy Stewart was there. 😊
As an accomplished musician I have to say that Steve Martin is an outstanding banjo player, the man can flat out pick it. If you've never seen him play I highly recommend looking it up on here and watch the man tear it up.
So true. Being a string player for fifty years, anyone who hasn't seen Steve Martin play hasn't seen the best and most unique side of him.
I’d rather watch you play instead Mr LeadSled, not a fan of Martin I understand however he has been very accomplished.
@@RichieRichMD why thank you for the kind words
What an ingenious and hilarious appearance, and somehow I don't think I've seen this before! For all the accolades Steve Martin has received in his career - he's still underrated. One of the best entertainers of ALL TIME.
The Man With Two Brains always cracks me up
Steve Martin is probably the hardest working comedian in the world. Even on a Tonight Show appearance, he works tirelessly on perfecting his appearance.
Hahahahaha! 😆😆😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think this is his best visit on the Tonight Show!!!
That bowling go trophy was the PERFECT choice
Martin is brave and a genius
Johnny was the greatest late night host of all time
I will pray for America. Please pray for me. God Bless you.
I can't believe I've never seen this. Watched the Tonight Show all the time.
Martin is a master comic and Carson was a master at letting it happen. This brought an infusion of happy.
...feet?

Wait - were you the one who missed the cue to give him a blue spot?
He's One Wild And Crazy Guy!

Jimmy was laughing too. When Steve falls on the floor you can see Jimmy cracking up 😂❤
My mom has/had the Jerk stand up on vinyl ❤☝️My favorite performance of all time in a movie 🍿 by him will always be Planes, Trains & Automobiles ☝️❤️💥
Where's your other hand?
Brilliant. This channel has been on a roll with great clips.
Quite a performance by Steve. Warp speed comedy.
5:00 - The moment Johnny understood what Steve was about to do

One of the most entertaining Martin segments on any show I've seen.
Steve was and still is a comic genius. He's a cool guy too.
You might say an awesome man.
His Flydini Act is a classic.
Steve was always so prepared for his TV appearances. Most of the time, he prepared months in advance. Thus, his appearances were performances. Only in his older age has he become comfortable/confident enough to “wing it.”
I love it that Jimmy Stewart put his glasses on to read the review.
Now that was a Mega-Plug for a movie if I ever saw one! Lol
Steve Martin is a national treasure!
Priceless
Love Steve Martin. Please continue on with “Murder in the Building” with Matin Short and Selena. It is an Awesome show…(since u so love that word..😉😉😄
Awesome, just awesome!
there are a couple generations of Americans who have no idea that late night TV was once funny
You can see me and my father when he does the bit from audience
Where are you seated? It must have been wild to be there that night.
I wanna see an Oscar acceptance speech like this just once.
You can see me and my father when he does his bit from the audience
I think it was interesting that Jimmy Stewart was there. I would have liked to see his appearance.
*He crushed it!*
The Women's Bowling Club "Oscar" trophy was hilarious.
Martin was absolute genius
"Pennies From Heqaven" a great movie!
Incredible 😂
Academy awards Month!! 😎👌👍🍁♈🍁
Exceptional post. Gave me some good belly laughs. That's the only exercise I do to lose belly fat. (:^D
This is great :)
Absolutely funny! 🎉
Memories 😂
That’s Jimmy Stewart next to Steve!
Steve Martin was very funny in 1979
I miss the old days when talk shows were entertaining and informative not politically
Wild and crazy guy
Larry King use to say there are only 2 Comedians in the history of Hollywood that had the greatest impact : Charlie Chaplin and Steve Martin.
Mr King would be quite self-righteous to believe he is entitled to evaluate who is a genius and who isn't...
''King'' was a moron.
Just a classy, funny guy.
I think Steve and Robin were his favorite guests
And he's pretty good on the Banjo 🪕
Brilliant. Carson gave Martin two mintues for a great finale - and thats how long he took!
The guests make a color gradient
His personality or act really calmed down after the late 70s. I wonder why?

In all likelihood, Johnny Carson is even more liked and missed today than the WOKE Clowns who host today's late-night shows.
Kimmel as a prime example.
And Colbert.
Colossal creeps Colbert and Kimmel, along with that grotesque freak that follows the ineffectual Fallon on NBC - are among *the most* reprehensibly despicable characters to ever have disgraced the small screen.
If you look closely that was a bowling trophy.
...no need to ' _look closely_ '
the best material is just acting out what other people really think! haha

Steve was more loose and alive in Johnny than even on Dave.
Just never saw him as funny. Sometimes he is.

Steve Martin: the cocaine years.
Funny

Why did they edit out the movie clip ? That was done in bad taste ! 😊
Copyright infringement, I believe.

Mildly amusing
Watching this, it came to mind that Jim Carrey has taken quite some inspiration from Steve Martin. All the way to peeing his pants at Letterman.
His not nice in person
I miss the best makes the rest (Fallon and the other dork) hard to stomach.
