I somhow had this nasty feeling long ago that the angry mob would sooner or later go after Lucy for teaching British/RP pronunciation. But I kept saying to myself I must be a loony suspecting that to happen. No, I wasn't. Here we go - Lucy has been denounced by the woke movement and forced to deliver a self-criticism. Just because her teaching correct British pronunciation to us was classified as verbal microaggression, whatever it might be. "Someone" is hell-bent on making us ununderstandable to each other.

Language teaching is serious business and as always you can find people who want to take advantage and get on the bandwagon to profit. Lucy, of course, is a "veteran" and she has been here for a long time but the problem wasn't her, the problem wasn't Lucy's way of teaching, it was how the industry tend to tell you that your accent is not perfect, that you must speak like a native, that if you don't sound truly native then people will laugh at you and won't take you seriously AND THAT'S THE PROBLEM. I truly believe that we, as learners, should be focusing on being understood and having GOOD PRONUNCIATION, that's not the same as ACCENT.... But anyways, Lucy's video wasn't bad, in fact it was really good but the title and the "premise" behind learning such vocabulary is totally wrong and toxic. I recommend you that you find videos of Henry Kissinger speaking, the prime minister of Israel Netanyahu and Putin, they're not natives but they speak great English.

Nobody can speak like a Uk native English speaker or like an American person if they’ve not been living there since childhood and as long as your English is grammatically correct, you don’t need to worry too much about your accent cuz you can’t change your accent anyway, even if you do you can never lose your native accent 100% and you will end up being laughed at because you have not liked the real you! So catchy videos are costing people’s time to change their accent when they can’t do it.

As a child, I learned my native language the way my parents and the people I spent most time with, spoke. The point is, when you learn you usually tend to refer to the standard pronunciation that most people would understand. I've been living in the uk for a while now, I am reasonably fluent, but I'm aware that I need to keep improving, especially my pronunciation, not because I feel ashamed or anything, but I love to speak with the confidence that everyone can clearly and quickly understand me, which is vital when you are working and maybe under pressure.

@@lauradomenici578 i understand you, but just the same. What Lucy teaches is the "correct standard British" pronunciation. And, if you consider that most people (Around the world) speak more similarly to American people due to the amount of media we get from them (movies, tv shows, etc), you would realize that most of the people who speak is: non-native, not British-accent speakers. And even among British and among American there are accent differences).
Now, if you lived in South Africa or Australia, I'm sure you would see that Lucy's pronunciation is not the correct one for everybody.
I'm Brazilian and I've seen videos of people teaching Portuguese to English speakers (American, i think), and, honestly, if someone came to my area (the South), speaking like that (people from Northeast), they would sound a little strange, but we would COMMUNICATE, and adapt, because why on earth, would I expect them to sound like a Brazilian instead of being fluent and communicatively competent?
The line Lucy's crossed is the one where it is expected to have a person erase their origin to be fluent. I've been an English teacher for many years, and I used to follow her, but I quit, because we all get to a point where we realize that this is all unreal, and Not EVERYBODY speaks perfectly, nobody speaks exactly like the dictionary pronunciation indicates, and it's freeing... we have to be careful to have a clear pronunciation, but like she mentioned "eXpresso" is wrong, well, espresso was borrowed from Italians, if I were Italian, I would pronounce it the right way "expresso" and nobody would be confused about what i was speaking.

    Dear Lucy,
Whenever you say in your videos “sound like a native” and “sound more professional” I can only appreciate.
As a speaker of any foreign language, each of us have limits since there are distinctive sounds in each of them (which are phonemes). As children we have better contact with a particular language acquiring its characteristic phonemes and may have to strive a little more to imitate different sounds. It’s natural to us.
With practice however -as with everything in life- one gets used to the new sounds as to speak in parallel and so be better comprehended by ones who have acquired these different sounds as children -as we did with our own; they might as well find difficulty to pronounce sounds of other languages.
Although I know I will not be able to pronounce all words 100% -the same goes to the use of grammar-it’s clear that your intention is to help one to improve his speech as best as he can; with excellence, not perfection. After all, who wouldn’t want to be better understood by everyone? Lucy, you are a marvellous teacher. I’m much more confident in my English after your lessons. And all that for free, I couldn’t be more grateful. Thank you!

It is a shame that you are removing these videos as for non-natives, it is the truth that they will sound uneducated and simply ridiculous in the eyes of other non-native co-workers who are also taught British or American pronunciation (the way it is presented in the dictionary). It is not discriminatory to present specific British accent in a channel created by a British person. It doesn't mean that people with other accents are not intelligent or anything else. It just means that if you are a learner of English, it is better for you to study the "dictionary" accent. I was made fun of constantly because of my accent and told that I sounded 'funny.' Other kids looked down on me simply because of my accent. I was no less intelligent than them but judged solely because of the way I pronounced words. This is the problem.

Unfortunately, most people are too polite to help me in this way.
On the other hand, I do know about the many more levels of language you have compared to the German language. And I know about the many more words and synonyms which are differently used by different speakers.
But do you really need to be mortally offended and to apologize about an old problem?

Agree! When a person has an accent but the speech is grammatically correct as well as pronunciation, nobody would say that the person is uneducated/unintelligent. But even if person almost gets rid of their accent to make it fairly unnoticeable but still makes huge pronunciation and grammar mistakes that surely would make people doubt one's professionalism. I can't believe what I've just heard!
Lucy, you're teaching British English with the pronunciation we can find in dictionaries. And it's the best one to learn for non-native speakers. Of course there are different accents, but you are not teaching them. If someone is offended by that, he can go and find a channel with that different accent he likes.
Last video was brilliant. I found that many of these mistakes are common in my native language (Polish) as well. And many of the words you talked about in that video are not about an accent. Espresso is always eSpresso and not eXpresso! It's not an accent, it's a mistake! And if someone is making that mistake it doesn't mean he's unintelligent. It just means he doesn't know how to pronounce the name of that coffee. And you can help him with that!
If you really feel bad about the situation, maybe just change the titles of your videos. There's no need to use words like intelligent/unintelligent, etc. You can write: "Correct British pronunciation of 10 professional/school words." or "10 common mistakes...". I don't need catchy titles, because I love you content anyway. Just like millions of your subscribers. Please have that in mind and don't change!!!

This is the biggest WAIT WHAT I've ever said out loud. I'm speechless, you are apologising... for teaching!? What's next? People offended by the camera angles? Wanting to educate yourself doesn't mean you were stupid at first It means you're willing to expand basic knowledge and that's by no means something to be offended about or reason enough to come at those who are trying to make your learning path a little lighter. If you ever get offended by something, first look at yourself, accept your weaknesses and strengthen them, learn every single day and focus on what YOU can do to make yourself better instead of wasting that precious time on bringing other people down just beacuse you don't consider yourself enough.
I had to say it since you had no reason to apologize in the fist place. You're a great person and genuinely care about giving those who follow your content the quality learning material they deserve and hopefully reaching out to more people. I am always eager to watch your videos on pronunciation since I am not a native English speaker myself but I want to get better at enunciating some words. I am really thankful you take the time to go through every single word, pronunciation and grammatical wise and also make it fun to watch and listen to all the same.
Now, the reason behind why I can't not seem to understand people getting offended by whatever they think you did wrong it's because I have seen myself how some people (foreigners), not native of certain language, as a matter-of-fact, take for granted pronunciation. However, when talking it sounds so off that is kind of embarrassing, there's when you really REALLY feel stupid. But you shouldn't bring it on others, in fact, its a learning opportunity.
So, again, I am thankful to you teacher Lucy and all those who care about education, real education. Moreso, want to make a difference everyday for them and also for everyone willing to learn and educate themselves.

For example, some people can’t get a job and may be beaten or subjected to other types of aggression by the locals. In addition, the states may often prohibit certain languages or cultures and much more. I think that it is very important to focus on this topic because many people cannot get rid of the accent all their lives.

Instead of using brains it’s easier to say “It’s my right”. The next step is firing red head girls as witches I guess...

I have many italian friends who say their accent is terrible, but I actually love it. I believe our accent is part of our identity as europeans, latin americans, etc. So there's nothing wrong with it. Greetings from Guatemala.

@@byronreyes7711 I totally agree. Moreover, if you're speaking with an accent means that you're not speaking your mother-tongue and that you know ANOTHER language! that's not exactly being "uneducated" or "stupid"!

My dear Lucy, you do not need to apologies for nothing. Really. I am listening your videos for quite a long time and I never ever feel that you might offend someone. Teaching and letting people know how they should pronounce or behave regarding English lessons is coming very honest from you. If someone feels frustrated is his/her problem. They should understand that you are not a baby sitter. You are a teacher and you choose to use your time in order to teach people English. And for that you need to point the mistakes we do in order to develop a better level. Hope to meet you one day and thank you in person for the AMAZING and WONDERFUL work you do for us. Eres la mejor!! Sei la più brava! Forza e coraggio. Thank you thousand times for your dedication. 💖💪🏻🌸💐🌞🦋
