I was right in the middle of that ecstatic steaming mess of a crowd, just a sea of bodies that surged and back and forth to this music that meant everything. Don’t think my feet touched the ground for much of I Will Follow. I was 16 and this was my fist U2 gig, but this band had changed my world since Boy came out when I was 11. They were from my hometown, and they were finally home. This day was a spectacular joy.
I was at that gig with my sister. I worked right next to Croke Park and we had a bird's eye view of the rehearsals that took place in the days beforehand. REM was the supporting act. Looking back at the greatness we witnessed almost 40 years later, it still takes my breath away. I saw U2 with my husband in Madison Square Garden in 2015, and it was truly magical. Man, can they put on a show!
I was there too - REM was the 2nd opening act (after some local Dublin band) and REM was followed by the Alarm, the n Squeeze, then of course U2. I will follow was not the opener either - it was ‘11 O’clock Tick Tock’ - was an amazing day
I was 12 when I went to this concert with my friend Graham Hughes from donaghmede. Didn't have tickets, we got through a gap in the fence. What a day. Bunked the train home afterwards as we didn't have a penny in our pockets the whole day
I was 16, you were lucky neighbors, just down the road, Coolock here, and we could here the music from there so we still could listen and here , and play around :D
Amazing how 4 men from this tiny Island totally conquered the fucking world and are 1 of.. if not THE best live performing band of all time still...just chills 👑🇮🇪
This was my second gig after the War tour (Belfast Maysfield Leisure centre gig). It was mind-blowing. Electric. You could feel the raw emotion in the air, just look at that crowd. In the days before health and safety ruined the atmosphere at stadium gigs. Packed in, sweaty happy bodies singing as one. It was immense. We will never forget that morning, sitting outside Croke Park on Jones Road listening to the early morning soundchecks when the gates opened and a small open top car came out with the fab 4 in it. They waved at us and said hello. Nearly fell in the canal! :-)
@@stephent9677 Well, Squeeze were an excellent support band for sure, and I love their songs. Every song they played, we knew and sang along with. They are a great band who left a great legacy... but there's no doubt who the stars of the show were that night.
@@johnc3403 I think it's about anthemic staggering melodies for me with U2. Squeeze is ...nice! Always loved the guys and though they didn't turn out to be the "next Beatles" of songwriting, sure they are appreciated. But U2 - transcendent with this song, Electric Co, Wild Horses, Beautiful Day, God's Country, Gloria, even the more quiet songs pulse with another wild creative energy than almost any peers, certainly nothing close to the familiar lovable pub rock of a Squeeze, Rockpile, Tom Petty. None bad, but U2 vastly different level, different realm. I'd give an REM an approach to that "other realm" than normal bands too... loved the Alarm back in the day but they were also ran to U2 though beloved.
He (Clayton) really has kinda checked out hasn't he. He and Mike Mills always impressed me with unexpected bass harmony notes...Hmmm. I am most struck however by Edge no hat / Gibson Explorer. I didn't remember ever seeing him play Gibson in the early days and damned if I havent seen him play a Les Paul in the IWF first video release also.
After U2's Phoenix Park gig in '83 where Simple Minds played on the same bill, Simple Minds were voted by the Irish as greatest live band in the world in the end of year polls. U2 came second.
I remember this like it was yesterday. I only lived a couple of miles from the stadium in Marino and could have listened to it from my garden. If I remember correctly Bono stopped the gig at some stage because a lad had managed to get onto the roof of the Cusack stand. He wouldn't sing again until he got down. I was 15 years old. Great gig.
back in the day when a concert ticket was not the price of a house . we went on the 2 days .. Fantastic.. even when the guy was dancing on the stadium roof and they stopped to tell him to get the hell down. and it also included REM , and Leslie Dowdall and her band In Tua Nua ,, and others
Best version of i will follow i have ever seen. So powerful and passionate. Was too young to go at the time but could hear some of it while playing pitch and putt at Dublin Airport that evening 😉
It was a magical time to be a Dubliner. I remember a couple of years later, drinking cider on Terenure College playing fields listening to Simple Minds live all the way from Croke Park, such was the muggy thunderous atmosphere, we could hear it all that night :D wonderful times that I dearly miss.
@@johnc3403 every gig in the RDS sounded like it was happening in our back garden .. saw U2 there in 93, Prince and Springsteen both in 92.. U2 played two nights the first we all piled onto a ledge on the Johnson Mooney and O'Brien building in Ballsbridge and could see the lights.. different time
3 weeks this came after one useless (yes you read it right) useless Springsteen Slane concert, he went off and had dinner mid-concert. This just brilliant, made up for the disappointment of Slane. Just two weeks after this, I waited and counted down the days to a day, mid-July '85, London, Live Aid. I knew they'd do it.
