A remake doesn’t have to be a 1 to 1 recreation and SHOULD make improvements on outdated systems. For reference, see FF VII Remake.

Not surprised with the reactions of people in this review. I have been excited for this game to come out since I’ve played the original one and I give kudos to the developers for improving the game without compromising what we loved about the original. This is the level of remake Warcraft: Reforged should have aspired to.
I love how there's NO MENTION WHATSOEVER of any of the postgame content so many other reviewers have praised. Betting it was never even touched by this reviewer, just so he could rush out this half-assed review, lol.
@@chrisdaughen5257 I'm not entirely sure. In the original game, you get two class changes, each with a Light and Dark path. So you have Light, Dark, Light/Light, Light/Dark, Dark/Light (different class than Light/Dark), and Dark/Dark. He makes it sound like there's a pool they're randomly chosen from, when in reality it's fixed. I highly doubt this aspect of the game was changed, and that the reviewer wasn't aware this is how it worked before and likely still works.
In the original game, getting your final class change required you to farm a specific kind of "item seed" that spit out a random class change item. Each class change item pertains to a specific final class (such as Duran's Duelist vs Duran's Swordmaster dark class varients). Sounds like they kept this in the remake, although I highly doubt the amount of time this farming takes is really THAT bad. More likely, it's just a lazy reviewer saying "why can't this game just give me what I want without me having to spend the time to earn it"... The most idiotic is saying "Picking a party before you know anything about them means you may regret decisions". lol Now having the possibility of choice and another incentive to replay a game is a bad thing. After the 10/10 given to FFVIIR, a game plagued with padding, lame sidequests, forced slow walking to increase playtime, and unnecessary convoluted plot devices, and now this, seriously, even IGN is posting more coherent reviews...
Dang, I'd give FF7r a 1/10 personally lol Pretty much the only things I like about the remake is the visuals and music, they changed so much and I cannot stand some of the "artistic liberties" they took with 7r. The same things I hated about XIII (trilogy.. ugh) and XV they decided to keep in VIIr because people will buy it thanks to them rose colored glasses.
@@magus13131 Exactly, only liked the story where they kept with the original and the more fleshing out of the characters. Other than that, the music is great, and the visuals are fine (excluding the awful scenery textures). I know it has Tifa in HD (extra two points 😆), but come on, really really far from a 10.
Hes incorrect about the random class upgrades. Seems as he never played the original. You need to get a specific seed to get the class you want and you can farm those seeds. Bad review overall, complaining about things cause the game isnt modern enough. This game was made in the 90s for godsakes.
Okay, being wrong is one thing. Being down right deceptive is another. Regarding Magic: Both Angela and Charlotte can learn their Light spells right from the beginning of the game just by spending 2 Training points on Spirit. You have more than enough training points to learn both Holy Bolt and Healing Light by the time you get Lumina. So why did you show Duran's Training menu (a character who doesn't learn magic until after he class changes) exclusively when trying to make the point that "You are told about spells you can't learn yet" and not the two magic using characters THAT YOU HAVE IN YOUR PARTY!?
But then again, if you want the complete story, you will have to beat the game twice and have to use Charlotte at least once in a campaign. Correct me if I’m wrong.
Edwin Calderon // I just read this on a website: You take three characters with you so you get all three stories in one playthrough. You will have to take the remaining three characters on a second playthrough. Each playthrough lasts about 30 hours. This is actually a better system, I don’t think anybody would play the game 6 times.
@@Castapher there are 3 distinct storylines. Angela and Duran share a story, Charlotte and Kevin share a story, Hawkeye and Reisz share a story. You get more dialogue and story elements if you choose both of the characters that share the story but its not absolutely necessary if you don't care that much about the story. But if you want all the different final bosses then you have to do 3 separate playthroughs with the separate storylines. EDIT: Third character in party doesn't matter

One would think that with the pandemic and everything happening, game reviewers would finally have time to actually research the games they are meant to inform paying customers about. Did the reviewer actually get PAID for this joke of a review? If so, then it's no wonder traditional games media is spiraling the drain. The editor in chief didn't think to send the review back for polish? No mention of the differences between the PS4/PC/Switch versions, no mention of the boss fights, difficulty compared to other games in the genre (which might be interesting for the Tales Of crowd, for example). I don't think he should deduct points from the story. Yes there classic RPG tropes, but it's a remake of a game from 25 years ago, that would receive praise back then. Story doesn't have to be that complex.
Its very clear this reviewer legit doesnt like JRPG's in general. Why the fuck did they think it'd be a good idea to have a guy with a heavy bias against the genre to review a remake of one of the most influential 90's JRPG's?

This "gamer" thing is so cringy.
Stupid gaming community.
@Tamer Ciftci I wouldn't cry over a joke (this review). Just lmao. ;-)
"The classes are randomized between a handful of sets"
Excuse me what?
Is he trying to say they're a mixed bag?
@@chrisdaughen5257 I'm not entirely sure. In the original game, you get two class changes, each with a Light and Dark path. So you have Light, Dark, Light/Light, Light/Dark, Dark/Light (different class than Light/Dark), and Dark/Dark. He makes it sound like there's a pool they're randomly chosen from, when in reality it's fixed.
I highly doubt this aspect of the game was changed, and that the reviewer wasn't aware this is how it worked before and likely still works.
@@ScyonNeon According to literally every other review, it's the same as the original
Completely ignoring the fact that all tier 3 class changes are OBSCENELY powerful. Smh
@@KrimsonKracker yeah its not that bad at all. You are literally given the seeds you need if you just open treasure chests in the last few areas of the game and kevin gets multiple of his class item seeds as a fairly common drop off of a pair of near end game enemies. The class items dropped from ??? seeds will also always be for your chosen party and will always be one of the 2 each character needs to go to the class 3 options available to you based on whether you picked light or dark for class 2. This guy is bs and spreading misinformation to criticize the game

Awful review
Critics: FF7R changed everything
Also Critics: ToM didn’t change anything smh.
At least you know what you want I guess...
Hey I didn't like my choice of characters and to me the game would be impossible without a healer so its bad. So wrong on all sides here. One of the more hypocritical review I've ever seen. Complaining about the english voice without even suggesting the quality japanese track. You just sound frustrated more than objective by starting with the fact that you got pissed choosing Riesz expecting something you didn't get. Are you like 5 years old or something? Not impressed at all buddy.
This review is why I don't subscribe to Gamespot. The reviewer has no idea what he's talking about or what he's playing. Pitiful.
This guy has never played a Jrpg! Trials of Mana is a 9/10 for fans of Jrpg's.
The bad points mentioned in the review are just ridiculous. Pretty sure the reviewer never really played or didn't particularly like the original.
The most idiotic is saying "Picking a party before you know anything about them means you may regret decisions". lol
Now having the possibility of choice and another incentive to replay a game is a bad thing.
After the 10/10 given to FFVIIR, a game plagued with padding, lame sidequests, forced slow walking to increase playtime, and unnecessary convoluted plot devices, and now this, seriously, even IGN is posting more coherent reviews...
Dang, I'd give FF7r a 1/10 personally lol
Pretty much the only things I like about the remake is the visuals and music, they changed so much and I cannot stand some of the "artistic liberties" they took with 7r.
@@magus13131 1/10 ??? Dude cmon.
Relius I never understood the “it’s too linear” point. In the original Midgar was linear too.
Wow, this is the first time i find the review from IGN better than this one, this hipster was complaining about everything.
Riview on switch capture on ps4 what do you mind..,?
Does this have jp language options?
It does indeed
@@laeeqmohamed1539 So this guy is clearly doing it wrong.
What a desastrous review... full with missinformation and lack of understanding about the game's mechanics ...
You're really not good at your job are you, Steve?
Do you even Mana bro? I guess not.
This is like having a vegan, tell us how delicious a Steak is... worst review from a non experienced fan of the genre and it shows
Go back to reviewing drying paint.
lmao
This guy clearly knows nothing!
This game is a work of art, and well worth the 39.99
Hes incorrect about the random class upgrades.
He’s complaining about story, even character names. That were created years ago...... never even mentions this is a remake of a older game lol
He literally says it’s a remake in the very beginning...are you deaf?
Still a bad review.
0/10 not mainstream enough & is an actual jrpg
ayy lmao you really chose charlotte in your party thats the worst membre in the game avoid her at all costs
But then again, if you want the complete story, you will have to beat the game twice and have to use Charlotte at least once in a campaign. Correct me if I’m wrong.
@@turanx0 as far as I understand, there are 6 characters. So, have to finish it 6 times to get distinct cutscenes ?
EDIT: Third character in party doesn't matter
iplayunity he made fun of a character with a speech impediment. That’s savage.
Regardless of his opinion on the game, do you actually gain more combo chains as you upgrade your character?
feels like some reviewers focus on the bad things more than the good esp if game has got tiny few bad things but lots of good
The person who review this definitely didnt like this type of this game that's why he gave it a low score it's so stupid is a great story driven game with fun gameplay I hardly disagree with him and gamespot should take this review down and give it to someone who really loves this games and do it all over again don't listen to him buy it and play it for ourselves
I'm GameSpot, I literally have the worst taste in video games!
The Nintendo Switch and PS4 versions Trials of Mana are playable in Japanese, English, French, German, and Spanish. Simplified and a Traditional Chinese and Korean are exclusive to the Windows Steam version.
You mean a game from 1995 has fantasy tropes? You don't say? Honestly I'll take the english Charlotte's vocal mannerisms over the awful uwu japanese pronunciations any day. At least the english voice actors tried to add layers to these very simple characters, as someone that speaks Japanese I can tell you the japanese VOs are really one dimensional.
I haven’t been able to put this game down.
Me too. Nearly platinumed it.
This is an embarrassment of a "review" if you can even call it one...
Actually I don't care any review because I play this game 20 year ago more than 6 round, I buy this for do same thing again haha.
Visions of mana brought me here
Did u see the low amount of hours he put in? This guy doesn't like rpg games.
Anyone knows if the Denuvo DRM will allow me to mod the game? I waited so many years for this game to come out and when i saw it on steam i was looking forward to mod and cheat the hell out of it. I really want to buy it asap, but not for one playtrough. Played the story as a kid so many time.
Just as I clicked the video and hearing the monotone depressed like voice of this person I know this review ain’t gonna be good
As far as gender is concerned, which playthrough is harder? All-male (Kevin, Hawkeye, and Duran) or all-female (Charlotte, Riesz, and Angela)
Really can't get a trustworthy review out of this. The complaints were so damn asinine.
Lol you can tell by looking at the characters you chose you would regret them. Im gonna pick the cool. looking dudes in my first playthrough
Hoi!
video qulity of this review is the best of all footage from game, that I saw on youtube
The original 1995 game is equivalent to Hard difficulty level in the 2020 remake.
"I'm filling in for..." Ahh so you didn't actually experience the game gotcha. Glad to see this last minute "review" I hope you have a good healer in your office
That is exactly what it means. He's not the reviewer just the narrator... You should direct your hate to the reviewer not the narrator
That means that he is just reading the other guy's review. If anything, the poor bastard in this video is the victim.
@@darkgaara787 I definitely understand that and I can see how my comment can look like I don't.
@@cayv7694 no hate here. Just disappointed. I've really been enjoying the game today. I hope people play the demo and watch more reviews
Not a single word about co-op play (which also could inform buying decisions). All in all, that review was atrocious. Gamespot has taken a nosedive ever since Gerstmann left.
Love watching reviews by people who fundamentaly do not like the type of game they are review.
It's so obvious that this reviewer has zero love for retro rpg games. This review is a joke
Who even plays remakes without playing the original. Now because of that you dragged down the score because you for example didn't know about the seeds. Pathetic.
This game was never RELEASE So yeah i didnt PLAY IT. The Mana series has never been good anyway. This one picked my attention because i enjoyed the demo
@@raulrojas9253 Been playing this game on emulator since the 2000's and still never got bored of it. Would hook my pc to my TV, and play with my childhood friends. GOOD TIMES! Though we couldnt play with 3 players at the same time as Secret of Mana. HOWEVER there is a patch to play with 3 players, but I never used it.
@@raulrojas9253 Bro this shit has been translated since the 90's.
That speech impediment of the healer so was so cute. Reviewer hasn't watched an anime in his life? Was gonna pass on this game after 6/10 review but after seeing this idiotic review I am going to pick it up after FF7:remake.
Good choice. Vast majority of reviews for this game are much closer to 8 (or higher). There's a ton of content here and more importantly REPLAY VALUE. With the original game, I absolutely LOVED coming up with uniquely effective party and class combinations. This game retains all the classes from the original and apparently even adds some exciting postgame content (other reviewers have praised)! Judge for yourself though.
Watch literally any other review for Trials, even IGN lol. This review was shit
There is clearly an abundance of plastic surgeons in this game's world...
I don't think he should deduct points from the story. Yes there classic RPG tropes, but it's a remake of a game from 25 years ago, that would receive praise back then. Story doesn't have to be that complex.
Trials Of Mana or Dragon Quest XI ?
You made a grave mistake: playing JRPG with English voice. And the review is quite awful.
Its very clear this reviewer legit doesnt like JRPG's in general. Why the fuck did they think it'd be a good idea to have a guy with a heavy bias against the genre to review a remake of one of the most influential 90's JRPG's?
Hi, I'm Chawwotte
...
I've made a terrible mistake.
*real solution = change to Japanese voice and Eng subs
@@klonewavverr2909 even the English ubtitles have the speech impediment lmao
I wish secret of mana remake got the same love :(
Get rid of this guy.

It’s a shame, really. It’s alright though, I’m sure they are happy they can have a low effort job to coast through
I just hope they don’t fuck it up with Timelines and changing your fate
Thanks for reminding me why I stopped trusting GS so long ago. Modern 'game journalists' are a joke. It's so obvious this guy has no clue about JRPGs and didn't even spend any time doing research about the original game. Who the fuck complains about story elements of a one-to-one remake of a 25 year old game?
Everyone has their own opinion and a lot of people have already said it but this review is just misinformed.
Elements for example, he says they aren't useful until way later on, but the red mage can learn it as it's first skill...
I give this review a 0/10
no this is wrong dont lissen to this Review..
So looking from the comments below, this game is only for JRPG fans, not casual or new players. Thanks, I will pass

This isn't a 6/10 you silly boy...smh
Mana fanboys complaining aside, I think the reviewer describes a 7/10 and then gave it a 6 at the end.
i see some 7 and 8 reviews but a 6 wtf
That why u should'nt take reviews serious because there opinions not facts!!
"the class upgrades are random"
Depending on what you choose for your first upgrade whether it's light or dark will choose what light or dark options you get for your second and so on.
I think he was referring to what item the ??? Seed item gives. Not the classes themselves
And why can't this series get an Xbox release?
How to take a great mp-experience and build a mediocre sp-game. Such a shame
Ugh...very bored sort of voice was quite difficult to follow.
lol same site that gave FF7 remake a 10
You just destroyed your whole career. And next time actually play the game before reviewing.
I'm not listening to someone who chose Charlotte to be in their party 😆.
Wow you should be suspended or at least written up for this horrible review. Do you even play games for fun? When did you start? The names were taken from enemies in the mana saga. The story seems dated and hokie because this game is a remake much like ff7 I will say new content would be nice but they went from a 2d game to a 3d game which I wish they did for secret of mana and hope they do for chrono trigger... nonetheless do yourself a favor and never review anything that has remake or remaster again since you clearly half ass your work
you can tell this guy only plays fortnite
Still one player only? Pass.
Thumbs down, one of the worst reviews I've ever watched.
I am calling it now: gamespot lost all credibility and is way inferior to IGN nowadays. Giving a 6 for this game but also giving a 10 for FFVII Remake and Persona 5 Royal is very weird.
Royal is an amazing game.
@@CaptainEffort Still doesn't deserve a perfect score. It is just another upgraded version of the same game released 3 or 4 years ago, the same way Atlus did with previous game. So it is not a brand new game.
@@LCardosed92 So? Let's say Persona 5 was a 9. Royal is a better version, so wouldn't it stand to reason that it'd get a 10?
@@CaptainEffort err, no. Since when recycling the same game from 3 years ago just to make it better deserves a higher score than the original? Wake up man, that is just Atlus's excuse to make you pay full price for something that could be a dlc. They did that since the ps2 era and they didn't change.
@@LCardosed92 So you're saying that a game that's objectively better than a 9, shouldn't be a 10?

@Maveth The Reaper look Maveth the reviewer is just going on and on about things he dosen't like that have nothing to do with the game play in general they did not make this game just for him the character voice acting is nothing to jump up or cry over ..ok the voice acting in general could be improved... then move on ..game play at low lvl is very repetitive until you get up in higher lvls then it gets interesting...ect dont just cry over things just because he has his opinion and ruin the game for people that might have an interest is a good game ..i say good since i havent finished the game. It just feels like he was forced to review a game he has no interest in.
I’m just not a big fan of these super low poly square soft remakes. I’d rather they updated the old pixel art and made it look something more like Octopath Traveler. Meh
Städerna i denna remake ser 100 gånger bättre ut.
