Dad,i miss you . :( Maestro Mischa, my Dad used to play this suite with the same approach, ominous, grave, respectful of the score, courteous, gentle- [almost sweet - which earned him a bit of criticism from his colleagues] You play it exactly the way he used to play it !! Thank you. Damn you're good !

Was Suite No. 5 his favorite of the 6? I've recently been taken with 5. I really do enjoy this approach. You have the gravity, which defines it, yet the structure of the piece is not lost to the excessive use of technique.

This is a great example of Suite No.5 performed with normal tuning, A-D-G-C, not with the original tuning G-D-G-C, which most professional cellists adopt. Anyone who has ever challenged this piece knows A-D-G-C is far more difficult.

In Maisky's other video of this prelude he plays the gigue much slower. I like this version. It's alive! In recordings of Bach's cello suites Maisky is his only competition.

He nailed this one from the start! No reference point, no looking, he just hit it in pitch, on cue without hesitation. I appreciate the care he takes to contrast the first section from the dance section and that every note sings. Excellent job!

He's playing this by memory. Don't see him reading the music to ensure he's staying consistent to Bach's notes.

he must have played the piece a thousand times before the recording!

I've seen such comments under many many great compositions. It is not hard at all to play this by memory there is hundreds of thousends of technical tricks that one has to practice to play this piece at this level so in order to play this piece with this prefection you have to have practiced it thousends of time. Regardless of the above mentioned reason, music consists of very well connected logical patterns and relationships that produce the sense of it and these patterns are very easy to understand for a professional musician. So you can imagine this as a regular guy memorizing the text of a song, adimttedly a very long song, but still it is not as hard as one imagines

U go and try and play better than this legendary cellist that has many more years of experience than u Andrew Boyce. Like who tf do u think u are disrespecting a world-renowned musician when you're still probably a middle-aged dude playing 4th grade cello pieces
