PC socket: in.

I have absolutely no issues using my Godox/ Flashpoint strobes, including my V1 on-camera and off-camera with wireless triggering in TTL on my Sony bodies and never did have any issues. I dont know what you are doing wrong, but it is something. FYI, I currently shoot with Sony A7RV, A1, A7SIII and they all work great in TTL with my Godox V1, Godox AD200Pro. AD300Pro, AD400Pro and AD600Pro strobes. I am a longtime International Award-winning pro and it all has to work for me and my varied clients, and it does. Something is wrong with your setup and/or gear. I dont use Wescott strobes , and I tried using Sony flashes, but wasn't impressed and they were way overpriced so I sold them, and have been completely happy with my Godox/Flashpoint gear. Cheers and best to you.

After watching, I got out my Godox V1S and attached it to my A7RV. I had no issues at all shooting in TTL mode. In fact, the photos looked MUCH better than any I took on my old A7III using the same flash and TTL. (This isn’t too surprising given that the A7RV is a vastly superior photographic camera, but I was initially concerned based off your video). The improved white balance and colors are also prominently on display using this camera and flash combo, provided you set the white balance to “Flash.”

@@KarlMeyer I tested it at f2.8 and f5.6, on the Sony 24-70 GM II; both worked fine. I am only using TTL with the VS1 on camera. For off camera flash, I would never use TTL anyway. I much prefer to meter and set my flashes via the meter.

      Flash Mode: Fill-flash

@@2010SLP Thanks for sharing. Just did some more testing. It defaults to 1/128 every time for me, sadly. It's definitely broken for anything shot at 2.8 or wider. Someone else left a great explanation as to why that is either a conspiracy theory or the truth. It sounds totally reasonable.

    Hi Karl,
Your video really hits home with me and I appreciate your making it. I just subscribed to your channel because of it!
I have been shooting professionally for about 16 years and 95% of my work is done with flash/strobes. I started with Nikon, went to Sony and now shoot Canon. One of the reasons I switched to Canon was because of the years of frustration I had with Sony's off camera flash situation.
Im far from a technical person but I have used Godox flashes with different Sony cameras and I can tell you that I have had many, many shoots ruined because my flashes would not fire, would not fire accurately and were the cause of additional stress during important jobs as I could not trust that it would work. Ive had to shoot with natural light because my flashes wouldn't work, re-schedule shoots and constantly worry about whether or not my flashes would malfunction instead of concentrating on my clients, compositions, poses, etc.
I believe one of the problems with the Sony system and off camera flash with Godox, Westcott and other 3rd party flashes is the Sony hot shoe design. If you look at Canon's and Nikon's hot shoe and then look at Sony's you can easily see the difference. The construction, design, stability, balance and protection of the components on the Sony system hot shoe is their Achilles Heal. Even putting the flashes in the hot shoe is challenging because you really never know if its in correctly or not. It may not work at all, breakdown during a shoot or it may work fine. Its kind of like driving a car you dont trust!
I sold my entire Sony system and went to Canon and for many reasons am much better off. Canon, for me, has been reliable, easy and comfortable to use and it performs better than any Ive used in the past. However, Im not saying this is a universal statement that applies to everyone. Im sure Sony products are excellent for many of their millions of users, but for me, not so much.
Thank you for letting me share my experience with you and your channel!
Great video and I look forward to your future content!
    Best to you Karl! 😊

Yes! I started on Sony and thought it was me! I could never get TTL to work on on-camera flash, off camera, strobes, led strobe, nothing. I've had to use manual and it's just been frustrating. What I have found is that my godox flashes and triggers were not keeping up with the 10fps. Sometimes, it wouldn’t even keep up with 5fps. I’ve photographed so many events where the flash did not fire, and some of the most amazing shots out of the bursts were the ones where that flash did not light up the subject. I tried my first Sony flash at the beginning of the year. It sucks that you need to use AA batteries, but when it comes to event work, I’m going to be sticking with Sony flashes. The quality as you mention is amazing and I like the fact that it communicates directly with the camera’s interface. White balance is usually perfect. Being able to control the flash with the cameras lcd is pretty amazing. To me it’s gonna save a bunch of time in post and quicker deliveries means I can get onto the next thing. I do agree, that if Sony is doing this on purpose with 3rd party flashes, hopefully they can fix it to allow us more affordable options, or give us lithium built-in batteries in the Sony flashes, and that would be great to. Either way great video. Thanks for the insight.

Hi Karl, Great Video, I have been smiling at your tests as I have done them myself and found the exact same issues. Godox, Pixapro, Wescott speedlights all come out of the same factory and they just knock them out. However.. off camera they work very well in manual but absolutely suck in TTL. Why!!! Its just a guess but the cheap triggers are to blame, they work have to calculate the flash power then send that info to the speedlight and I don't believe the tech inside them is up to scratch maybe there just junk, combine that with all the different manufactures of cameras Boom you have a problem so I believe they turn a blind eye to these issues . The triggers are just very poor and the hotshots are just pathetic thats by they break so often. SO! I have the new Sony F60RM2 which like you said works very well and I totally agree, The hot shoe connection has far more communications going on hence why cheap triggers are useless at TTL. I current work as an events and wedding photographer and I kick the shite out of my Sony speed lights and they work superbly, so I forgive the AA and the screen which maybe old tech but it does not bother me what so ever. Sony does its job, The rotational head for press shots is amazing too. Before I sign off, I also use Profoto A1s and agin the TTL is unbeatable and very consistent, buy hey they come at a price. The triggers are also expensive. That must confirm what I have said above, cheap triggers just suck at TTL. I may be wrong but thats what I have found. Godox are great in manual and perfect for off camera use, if they get smashed its not so painful.

I got a full Godox kit for my A1. V1 Pro, A,100 X3. For some of my use like low light event, off-camera TTL that works reasonably well is a necessity. After trying, i figured out that Godox can completely not do this. I found a used HVL-F28RM and HVL-F60RM and bought these. Woho! These flashes are just awesome, and great how they integrate with the camera. Flash photography got fun again! The AA batteries feels quite ancient though, but it works. And seems due to the good integration with the camera body they somehow get efficient, and even the F28RM can do quite some 20 pictures per second bursts. Then small things like not having to turn on or off the flash, the camera control that. Possibility to assign buttons on camera to control TTL flash compensation. No need to set high speed sync, it happens automatically. Ability to do 1/50000 sec shutter speeds and the flash handles that with no issues (a bit theoretical use case...).

I'm not having any of these issues in TTL or with HSS on as well but I will say i'm using the Sony A1 so i'm not sure what difference that might make but i'm getting the same exposure from both systems. In-fact besides the white balance correction from the Sony they look exactly the same. Hope it works out for you because I do understand what it feels like to spend a lot of money on a product and it not work properly. Good luck, nice video.

Good to hear that others have same problems with Sony and TTL-metering. I have no issues with the Godox setup I use even if I use f1.8 which is my widest aperture I own.
The X2T-S together with the XR1-S works perfectly fine with the older Sony HVL-F60, HVL-F20 and HVL-F43 and you get a much better high sync speed of 1/8000 if needed.
The next flash I’ll purchase is the Godox AD200pro for outdoors and I don’t’ expect any issues at all.

Using Sony a7m3 with a Sigma lens adapter for Canon EF lenses (so not using native Sony lenses currently) and Godox AD400pro & 600pro wireless studio flashes. I fire the camera and a lot of times (but in a small percentage this does NOT happen 🥶) there's a sync issue with this setup, causing a time gap (1-1,5 sec) that means I press the shutter button and the camera "waits" about 1 sec to shoot. Imagine this while taking portraits. I got used to this but still cannot believe this. I like using Sony for its quality but it's so crazy to experience such a bug in a not cheap system. Experienced the same with Mark IV at work. Never experienced anything like this with Canon. 🤨🥶

I don't find it that surprising that a third-party flash system does not operate perfectly with a particular camera. Autofocus with third-party lenses also don't work as well as camera manufacturer lenses. I tried out various Godox portable flash units because my studio flashes are all Godox. I can say for sure the Godox units are not as powerful as the Sony ones. The V1 is about a stop less powerful than the Sony HV60. Also, the Godox AD 200 puts out one-stop more light than the Godox AD400. That is because the AD200 has a different type of flashhead (fresnel). But I bet there are a lot of people who buy the higher-watt second flash thinking they are getting more. So, I went with the Sony flash system...more powerful, less lag time, better built, metal shoe. You get what you pay for in this case IMHO

Thank you so much for this video. I thought it must be my fault: The settings are complex, and I still do not know what each setting does. I thought TTL must be something for beginners as you get to at least a useful exposure somehow. I did lots of tests but did not get it to work with my A7iii as expected. Sometimes I get usable exposure with +3 stops flash compensation. Most of the time it is too dark. And sometimes it does not adjust when I e.g. open the aperture and overexposes the images so that it is completely unusable. This especially happens when the camera is in manual mode. In other automatic modes it correctly exposes the image, but it is not doing what I want (e.g. sets the ISO super high). I ended up working in manual mode (M) on camera and setting the flash power manually. This is the only reliable method, but it requires some test shots. On conferences or events, you need to be quick and do not always have the chance to take test shots. It is so annoying when you miss a moment because you are just too slow with the manual settings. I really wish I would have a reliable TTL option.

The other manufactures of addons have to adapt their firmware to work proper with the camera that they are attached to.
It would be the same if you have older car rims for you car that doesn’t fit, you blame the car manufacturer to change their setup due to an assembly design error ! A little weird.
In one thing I agree with you, you shouldn’t have made this video.

It's bad... I have a problem with the 3rd party Sony ecosystem big time as well. You can't even get the IR focus beam to work on the a7IV with some transmitters aad the fact the Sony doesn't even have an AF beam on their trigger kills me! I work a lot of low-light events and not getting focus while working off camera is just dumb! I have been using a Elinchrom Transmitter pro for some Rotolights and came to find out that it won't fire the AF beam on the a7IV camera. I am almost convinced I should go back to my a7III, just so things work again, plus, I hate the fold out screen versus the tilt screen, since it blocks the ports when I'm using them and need to use the fold out screen... So many bad choices made with the a7IV. So many. I love my Sony flashes, but the system could really use an overhaul and the HVL-F60RM2 is not even an upgrade! The LED beam was removed? WHAT?! That was a feature and it's somehow more expensive than the last generation still?! Why is Sony so good with what it gives consumers inside the cameras, but so bad with their peripherals and compatibility besides? The Sony interface hot shoe is the other issue... I've replaced about 3 hot shoes on my Sony flashes alone and another on the Flashpoint./Godox Thank you for saying something! RUclips is desolate wasteland when it comes to videos talking about the Sony flash system. More videos need to be made so Sony feels the pressure!

It shows that the third party manufacturers cant keep up with the development of the main brand. This is why i only by native lenses, unless im ready to take the risk. Hopefully godox and the others will adapt to the new sonys, but it will probably mean a new investment.😢

Karl Meyer & other saying about AA (14:13). You can buy ATG/Quantum/Nissin battery pack and connect it to flash.
You should really stay away from Li-ion battery for speedlites. They are expensive & use or no use they will go bad.
ATG used to support Jinbei/Orlit/Rollei/Westcott but departed over to become ATG/Godox.
So much problems & no supports at all from Jinbei for USA. That Adorama and B&H no longer support them.
Tested Sony A1 & A1 II: Jinbei & Rollei & Westcott are not supported. You don't buy TTL features and use it in manual modes.
As a matter of fact one can use ATG's Quantum QFlash T2 and get better results than using wireless radio TTL.

I had the same problem and found your video. I am checking with sony a1 and godox xpro-s, v1, v860 II.
As soon as I switch from the speedlight attached to the camera to the wireless remote flash, the TTL result is about 2 stops darker (I also felt that the more defusion I attach the greater the attenuation, the darker it gets.) I used the TCM function to see the flash output of the TTL and for some reason it is more than a 1/4 flash. It also seemed to me that it did not increase the amount of light emitted. I switched to the old GODOX Commander X1T-s and the image seemed to be a little darker, though a little better.
I have a slight hunch that it may be a problem with the commander. Is your commander X-PRO-s?
After trying various things after my earlier post, I found out that if you use the FEL, a feature that can be registered on a custom button, and press the register flash button once in advance to lock the exposure with the flash, and then take a flash shot, you can use the proper X-PRO or the exposure compensation in the camera menu. Even if you set it to plus or minus 0, you will still get the proper exposure. This means that the exposure data from the pre-flash when the Commander is attached is not completely transmitted to the flash side due to some problem in the case of normal issuance without FEL.

Just for reader information I was able to order both of these reused for a total of $300 from eBay. At about 7% of the cost of A7rV this cost is reasonable. When they arrive, I will let you know if they actually work. In the meantime I am putting all of my various non working TTL flashes in a storage box, to be used potentially as remote flashes when needed, providing the Sony Radio commander can trigger them. I have Nissin, Godex, Flashpoint, and various older Sony flashes that don't work for TTL on A7rV.

Godox V1-C but it's canon and Godox 865 again for Canon and then I have a Canon 600ex-rt ii that I use on the Canon 5d Mark IV... Is there a mode or setting on the Sony A7IV that freezes time at 1/ 250 so that the Flash adjusts the power of the Flash based on the aperture?

From my point of view no matter the manufacture the commander units are all shitty since the mirrorless cameras took over the market, because they didn't give them a front facing AF Assist light - especially for people that have to shoot people in low light. An Old Nikon SU-800 from 2005 can provide a sharp image even though there is no light at all on target. Build in AF Assist light sucks on all cameras > blocked by a big lense.

Godox V1 S for Sony does not expose well in TTL, I have had 2 and 3 units of this flash and it is a serious problem, so good when you shoot a lot of shots, one fails, it does not shoot and the color temperature changes, it is not only my problem, there are more people with these problems I used it at a wedding and it was fatal as I commented on a youtuber who is from Olympus exposing the same problem and in the end he agreed with me at a wedding he gave null shots and when the flash heats up it changes the white balance now I make another video that will no longer use it, in the end I comment that it is worth paying more and have something reliable I am talking about weddings as a professional photographer and bought a profoto, if it costs more but you do not risk it on yourself worked.
I have had this flash at Olympus, at Sony and at Nikon and I would not risk it professionally, there are many more people with these problems apart from the broken shoe, now they are starting to remove a metal shoe but there are still these problems with the.
