    It's a lot for one sitting but when a Portishead track is played as background in a bar you know you're in the right place.

      Its the perfect ‘come down’ album to put on after a big night at the clubs. I used to hear this album at a lot of after parties. Best enjoyed with an intimate small group of friends and a spliff or two. Trip hop indeed.

      @@TheWaynos73 Exactly. I still remember just such an occasion, an after party, hanging out with friends, sipping whiskey, talking, and this album playing in the background. Set a great mood, and we had some uncommonly good talks.

    One of those rare magnificent elusive moments in music - a flawless album with zero filler. Hip hop, samples, loops, scratching, electric guitar, jazz, blues, R&B, electonica, dub, drum and bass - all mixed into this intentionally lo-fi sounding earthy smokey lounge sound - transcending to the next level via Beth's seductive, pained, delicate yet powerful voice, evoking Sade meets Amy Whinehouse. This music style influenced SO MUCH of what came over the next decade and beyond - it arrived at the beginning of the explosion forward into the mainstream era of 90's electronic and dance music, along with 90s golden age hip hop while still being basically being an indie rock record - it is a paradox in a way, a beautiful paradox. I sound like one of those absurd critics. "Dummy" to me will always rank as one of the greatest albums of my lifetime. "Sour Times" is a such a great jam - you hear it a couple more times and it'll be seared into your mind forever. It got some legit mass attention as a single, though over time, "Roads" and "Glory Box" have become more mass favorites, but to me, it will always be the dark and driving intimate power of "Wandering Star," "Numb," "Mysterons," and "Biscuit" that stand out as the songs you MUST have on as you sit on a sofa in a townhouse converted into a lounge with black lights in the background in NW D,C. or something of the sort. The production gives me the vision of four people, a cassette tape recorder, turntable deck, cheap microphones, an electric guitar, and an insanely talented singer sitting on a kitchen floor and somehow creating this masterpiece, and in a way I believe this was their intention. Well, they pulled it off and we are all the better for it. As for its status as the mother of all Trip Hop and that sub genre itself then splitting off into so many other sub genres, the importance of it cannot really be over estimated. An album like this came together in the random way albums do, and it could never be re-created (though their 2 other albums are awesome.) And the Live at Roseland concert is legendary. Really stoked you listened to this one. Jeez that was long - this is a special one for me I guess and a sweet surprise to have you - one of the very best reactors of all - get to it. Thanks a lot!

      It’s like an Unknown Pleasure or Handcreme for a Generation in that it was a superior album by a band out of nowhere.

    Probably the most influential album to come from Trip-Hop? Possibly? Although Massive Attack & Tricky's debut were gems on their own, this project put Trip Hop on the pedestal imo.

      until 2017 thats for sure. until sevdaliza released ison imo. you can really hear the evolution and inspiration from portishead in it. the album is perfection from beginning to end especially if you are tripping.

    Pinnacle of sound. My favourite album ever. ❤️ One of my favourite female singers. Thank you 😊 Oh the live in Roseland, with an orchestra, is sublime as well. Anyway great choice, made me subscribe. You should do The Wall by Pink Floyd.

    I was lucky enough to work back stage at one of their concerts, I changed my position to meet up them in the green room where they had a few drinks. I caught Beth checking out my butt and she winked and smiled at me. True story. Keep waiting to hear a song from them about a security guard back stage :DDD

    Hi Wayne…..Helene here. Trip-hop came out of Bristol England in the mid-nineties…….very hypnotic vibe…..droning……one can hear Northern African influences as well in much of trip-hop. I prefer the band Massive Attack…,the other big group in this genre, but this is so good for a vibe. Robert Plant loved the music scene in Bristol at this time, and got several of the members of his band Strange Sensation from Portishead and Massive Attack. Strange Sensation was his band for the album Mighty Rearranger, which is in your queue for a quad reaction. You’ll be able to hear the blending of trip-hop and African rhythms in Strange Sensation…..a great creative period for Plant.

    Was introduced in college. Art studio favorite. Enamered by her voice over these beats. This is one of the best baby making albums from start to finish (along with Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite) that I can think of from that era? Her voice sounds innocent, sexy, and technically sound at the same time!

    A bit of Portishead trivia: Jay Z was once quoted as being a big fan of this album and he said he would play Dummy in his dressing room a lot before going on stage because it helped to centre him and calm pre show nerves.

    I remember when it was hip to hate Portishead. I never understood the hate back then. After 20 some odd years and thinking about it for 5 seconds, I realize it was just a bunch of pretentious gatekeeping assholes. Glad to see you giving them a second round on your channel!

    My copy of Dummy doesn't have It's A Fire. I can see why they left it off. While it's a really good track individually, it doesn't really gel with the other tracks on the album. It kind of sounds like a B side, after thought.

    Hey Wayne…it’s funny, but I a,ways imagine this music in a soundtrack for a very dark, perhaps violent movie. Definitely has a noire feeling to me.

    Mysterons is a _very_ English reference. The Mysterons were the alien menace in a science fiction comic book from the 1950s to the early 1980s called Dan Dare, who was an RAF fighter pilot taking to the stars in British spaceships to explore and combat Venusians and others. It's very retro-futurist now, with a lot of the 1950s and 1960s version of future aviation and rocket ships with lots of rivets and cockpits suitable for Spitfires or Meteor jets. Technology as big machines, also like in the Thunderbirds puppet animated show.

    • @Kinitawowi
      @Kinitawowi Месяц назад

      Nah. Close with Thunderbirds, but the Mysterons were the enemies of fellow puppet Captain Scarlet. (Dan Dare's arch enemy was The Mekon.)
