Directed by Minkie Spiro, this documentary film follows a small group of women from India through their struggles to reach the finals of Femina's Miss India contest and captures their lives on and off the stage. For three months the girls will sleep, eat and breathe nothing but Miss India.
The potential rewards are colossal: one of these coveted crowns can transform these young women into goddesses courted by Bollywood, wooed by India's fabulously wealthy elite and adored by millions. A large part of Miss India's success is down to Femina, the Mumbai-based women's magazine, which operates the contest like a well-oiled machine, grooming young women under an iron-tight regime of discipline and rigid rules. Following the efforts of several of the contestants, as well as others involved in the behind-the-scenes work of getting everyone ready, this film examines what drives the women toward this particular goal.

It’s sad how they went to look more like ⚪️ women. Darker skin is so beautiful and just exotic. I’m a black women and as a kid, I used to hate having dark skin and I hated my hair texture. Now, I’m most proud of my hair and my skin. I love the features that set me apart and I wish others saw the same beauty I see in non-Euro features

If the Miss India contest can be termed as the Meat Market, every national level and international beauty pageants are also that. They are beauty contests linked to commercial gain in some or the other way! Body beauty is one of the most important criteria. The boldness and the smartness of the girls out there on the stage is the only thing I personally can appreciate. How many really live up to the statements they make while winning? No offence meant, just my personal opinion.

What interested me personally is the boosting of confidence these girls get and lot of coaching with international standards. However what stands out is that fact that many Indian women and beautiful than any of these cat walkers on stage. Many women who represent India is not even considered beautiful at all. They are just average or below in beauty, but confidence of these girls after coaching they get is tremendous

Beauty contests are the most stupid way to treat women. Talking, walking, eating, self presentation, robs individuality to some standard that beauty business thinks sells. Purely idiotic. But I agree with her point on Neha, Neha Dhupia was definitely the blue eyed girl it seems, she was given lot of priority. Btw some of these girls are smoking, using F words, are blatantly talking about the virginity question needn't be posed to them, crazily acting in the hotel room with no discipline and glasses and bottles of liquor, and on stage they go like "We should have morals, ethics, honesty, compassion, love, dignity...and all positive adjectives to come across as some saint or philanthropist. Huge hypocrisy...utter shameful.

turns out that Medha's interview on this contest was one of the most talked about interviews from the contest...Hmmm I wonder why? Neha ended up winning Miss.Universe in 2002 & just celebrated her 20 years of all the help & support she lent to women in India after she won... Beautiful to hear about giving back & building up.
I didnt remember Neha won MU, I know Sushmita Sen, Lara Dutta and Harnaaz Sandhu won that title. Neha was a contestant in MU but not the titleholder that year/ winner, she is an amazing actress.

You can find these issues in all business that involves commission. Their incentives comes from the sales and many middle men plant themselves in between those sales to make money which drive up the costs.

It was an interesting video but it's obvious that in India they want to look like the vestern countries. I think all women has her own beauty. As an European woman I have to let you know that most women dress very well and not like the comment in this video that women in this part of the world dress bad it's a very negative attitude and it's not even true. As a matter of fact indian women show much more of their skin there wearing short tops showing their stomach you rarely see this here. Personally I don't like it at all seeing women being exploited and have to look in a certain way to be accepted. That itself is damaging for the self-esteem.
