  • Today we are removing some Cattails from my pond edge that have gotten out of control over the past few years. I'm using my LS XR315 Tractor with a Tar River Grapple mounted on the front. This ended up working great. I was able to remove most of the cattails all the way down to the root. Cattails are very difficult to keep under control. They spread rapidly and are hard to kill with herbicides. This is a great time of year to remove them because they have not started growing yet and the fish have not moved up on the banks with the warm weather yet. I left a small strip for the habitat and they do look great during the summer. After removing the cattails I use the box blade to slick the edges up. What a fun project! I hope you enjoyed the video. Probably find if you put more ballast (weight) on the rear of the tractor - say a carry-all loaded up with concrete blocks, this will take weight off your front wheels, helps stop them sinking in and provides the rear wheels with more traction. Front-loader tutorial 1.01.

Right on. This box blade weighs around 500lbs and my rear tires are loaded. I’ve got pretty good ballast. You are right though, ballast is important. Thanks for your input!

Haha! I’ll add pool noodles to the grapple. Maybe that will help?
