As a kid watching the first Iron Man, it was Tony Stark's original R8 that made me fall in love with cars, and the R8 has been arguably my favorite car ever since, through the couple generations. The next Audi supercar will be a technological masterpiece and faster than ever before, but all that speed can't replace the sound of a V10 and the child-like grin that goes with it. So long to an icon, this GT version is the perfect send off!

It's kind of hard to be optimistic when sound plays such a big part of how we perceive speed. Even with hot hatches for example, a good gear shifts with pops and bangs got you feeling like a racer.. taking all of that away is a big loss. Yes you have more outright speed but for us that aren't overly concerned with 0-60 times, it is going to be tough to get excited about new cars.
I have to agree on this one. New electric cars are nice to drive yes but they are little soulless for me and its mostly because of the lack of sound. Its might make driving for me just a way to get from a to b and as a guy who likes driving hurts a lot to admit.
EV driver here who also loves the R8. And all things Audi. I hear you. But like warm natural sounding vinyl vs digital audio, ICE will live on in the automotive equivalent of independent record stores - track days. Carpe sparkem.

It's quite sad to see a car like R8 leaving, it was launched IN 2006 it has just become a teen now. It will be missed for sure! It is sad that we as humankind are going end these magnificent engines one day!
End of an era. I was not a huge fan of this gen R8 when it debuted but my owe my did it grow on me. On the road it's stunning. This R8 GT is MEAN and a perfect way to send off this icon.

The ICE might not be dead, Hyundai, Toyota and others are working on a zero emission fuel which could save combustion engines with the need for maybe a slight modification.
I liked all of it but the conclusion "yes the R8 is dead but I'm hopeful the replacement EV is going to be brilliant", I'm sorry but this is a sad moment, we need to have a minute of silence for what was once beautiful, no EV is going to provide the joy you get from a singing high-cyclinder engine like the Lamborghini derived V10! I wish legislation would target high-volume production cars, leave anything that has a production run under 1000, then surely we can still save the ICE in the north pole and the ICE in the car!

It never seizes to amaze me how good the original, very first gen R8 looks even now, 20 years later. In a time when most cars look like melted plastic, it still manages to look properly futuristic. It's probably the only production car ever made, which won't look out of place even in the year 2053. Audi really hit the nail on the head there and hit the ground running with it. Absolutely astonishing. I've always said that if one day i was offered a choice to have any car ever made, i'd probably go for a Ferrari F355 Berlinetta or a Jaguar XJ 220, but now i'm certain - it will be a 2008 Audi R8 5.2L V10 with a manual gearbox. That was the peak of car evolution. It's all been down ever since.
That original R8 looked so good. I don't think they ever topped it in terms of design. Latest one has lots of cool elements but they don't really hang together as a cohesive whole. Epic car of course and it barely matters with that V10 in there but it's a bit of a mess styling wise.

Being 51 years old, I remember some iconic, jaw dropping, heart palpitating cars in my time. Right from my first love, the Countach (ABSOLUTELY LOVE the fact they made a new Countach - YES I BLOODY LOVE IT! - Rory YA LUCKY BASTID!! 😉), the Lotus Esprit (S1/S2 - Still loving the V8), Testarossa & F40, the mighty Mac F1, BMWs e30 M3, E39 M5, Ford GT (Any), latest Aston DB11 in dark blue, and more. The R8.. Yeah, it's way up there for me. Though I have to be honest, I wasn't really in love with it's first 'Set of clothes', but (Like Tony on TV comedy sketch show - 'The Fast Show') "The R8 is like a woman, at first young, racy, eager to please, beautiful at it's core, but in time develops and matures nicely like a fine wine.." Or similar lol. The R8 looks flippin' gorgeous, but, for me, would still get the latest all wheel drive version. I will never forget the R8.... 🤔😏👌 😎🇬🇧
This has been my dream car ever since it came out when I was graduating high school. It's been enjoyable seeing the evolution of the R8 over the years and it's sad that we've come to the day where we are saying goodbye to internal combustion. I just hope Audi does a good job of keeping the R8's legacy alive with the next generation "e-tron R8" or whatever they plan on calling it.

I had the privilege of buying an R8 V10 Plus Gen 2 last year. Boyhood dream. I have driven a few supercars but to have this sat on the drive. It is by far the best car I have ever owned. You could daily it. I basically used any excuse to take it out. Everyone loved it and the sound of that V10. You never and I mean never get bored of it. If I was a millionaire I would have kept it but I am just a normal bloke who had a dream so the time came to sell it. Walking away and leaving her was the hardest moment of my life. All hail the R8 😢
Internal combustion engines are going to be around far longer than the main stream would like you to believe. Love watching electronic vehicles fail miserably, for eg when Toyota announced they would stop with that nonsense. Hopefully the rest would come to their senses
While I always loved the R8 and all it's variations I always was hoping Audi would make a "mini" R8 using the 2.5 - 5 cylinder turbo or the 2.9L turbo from the RS4, (with more HP) Fitted in something to the scale of the likes of a TT but with a mid-engine design. This would have made a car that had fun performance and handling but was affordable to those who couldn't afford an R8 or wanted to spend the money to buy one. While I new the purest will not be happy with this comment, the weight of the V10 and power band at higher RPM's hindered this cars performance on short tracks. I was waiting for a twin turbo version of the R8 personally. :)
We have the giant push to EVs with no moves towards upgrading electrical infrastructure. California is already restricting charging times for EVs. I believe this is all politically driven and it’s running us headlong into one of the most predictable quandaries.
as a ttrs owner that this is the last hoorah for the r8 family. i am glad that it happened,sad to see it end like that will definitely daily it in coming years just for the sake of it. rn i am enjoyin my jr r8 :D
@@dlg78 The V10 cannot continue due to emissions so a 5 cylinder with a 48 volts electric assisted turbo to eliminate turbo lag would be a nice solution. The electric assisted turbo will also help to achieve a better exhaust note because it will not depend has much from the flow of the exhaust gases to move the turbine. And if they did like Mercedes did with the new C43 AMG they can also use a more powerful starter motor that will also be used to give at least 20 more horsepower and 200 newton meters of torque without adding much weight. That stronger electric starter motor would help the combustion engine at low rpm and so too eliminate turbo lag. Overall the car would be much lighter. Like you said, its half a V10 and the exhaust note will be similar to it. However a 5 cylinder has a very special exhaust note its similar to a V10 but not quite, it has its own distinctive sound, if they can make the engine spin until 8500rpm it will have a similar sound to the Audi Sport Quattro Group B rally car of the old days.

In that time audi was at top of automotive design, R8 started the design legacy and every audi from 2008 to 2012 was beyond beautiful.

However a 5 cylinder has a very special exhaust note its similar to a V10 but not quite, it has its own distinctive sound, if they can make the engine spin until 8500rpm it will have a similar sound to the Audi Sport Quattro Group B rally car of the old days.
@@mikaelgaspar9547 Audi are to be discontinuing all engines, even the 5 pot. The v10 being discontinued isn't due to emissions as it has cylinder on demand and runs on 5 cylinders on cruise.
