I just started Keto on 10/27 and I have been craving sugar but I had to just quit altogether... My biggest addiction is BREAD I love the stuff but I have been doing well.. My doctor just prescribed me 300mg of magnesium pills for my migraines and this was before My decision to do Keto.
I was lacto-vegetarian since birth (yogurt and gourmet cheese), now I do plant base and feel great, low carb, but not keto, feel fantastic, fast, etc Question - A1c was 6.6 and now 5.6 BUT, how to get rid of fatty liver other than activity and low carbs, how to? If I eat avocado, any such fat, the liver hurts, so no more of it or guacamole, high fat not good for me. Please, Dr. Maggs, what else to do to get rid of fatty liver soon? The thyroid hormone I use daily gave me high cholesterol. I feel great now. However, fatty liver persists. Even cutting out just the added sugar completely totally changed my life and myself mentally and physically in ways I can’t even explain. I’m so glad I did it
I was a huge (in every sense of the word) sugar addict. I dove straight in to ketosis as quick as I could. And for me it worked great. For me the sugar cravings diapered like flipping a light switch. I did not even get rid of the sugar I have at home. The desire to eat the sugary stuff just vanished!
So that’s why! So interesting about dopamine. It’s crazy how quickly I crave sugar after eating dessert just a couple days in a row. Going for a week though without sweets always gets me back on track. I’m gonna try your tip on drinking a glass of water, too! Thanks for this!
I definitely cut out with sugar switching to dark chocolate (90%) fruits with low amount of carbs/sugar as strawberrys, melons or kiwis and takings appetizer like olives.almonds or gazpacho (a fresh soup of tomatoe, water, onion, peppers, oil, vinegar, salt and garlic that I really recommend you for summer). Nice video Dr Dan.
I was heavily addicted to bread, and loved almost all the, grains, seeds, fruits and veggies. I went through severe fever and nausea, but determination, and a bucket got me through it. Every sugar craving was fed with fat, and now it's fat cravings I get, which are much easier to deal with.
Yes and I feel the cravings are very similar to quitting smoking, which I have also had my battles with. The way my brain is trying to convince itself that just a small hit is okay is eerily similar. I am on keto now and never felt better.
I can only last quitting sugar cold turkey for about 3 days, on the 4th day i am gonna craving sugar like hell. I quit on cigarette easily, but not with sugar. If i try on small amount of it, then i will only crave for more to hit that dopamine level i require..
Yes, I'm struggling with sugar addiction right now. I'm a 17 year old female and I have depression and ptsd and I've been craving chocolate and sweet red bean paste frequently. It's costing me. :(
Be strong and help yourself! You can do it. And think how much better off you’re going to be quitting sugar young rather than waiting until you’re old and sick and have to quit sugar because your health is trashed.

Hi Dr. Dan! I just wanted to let you know that sugar cravings have kept me from being on a keto diet for quite a while. I haven't heard you speak about it, but I used exogenous ketone salts to start on a keto diet. It really helped me not to get keto flu and not to crave sugars. I'm only about 8 days in, but that's further than I've been able to go before. Wonder what your thoughts are about that
Dr. Dan, Your message is so interesting and helpful. However, would you mind eliminating the background music Behind your talks. It is very distracting from the message.
Do you have to cut out all sugar completely? Is one cup of tea with a small spoon of sugar not allowed? Or one plain rich tea biscuit😄. I've managed to cut out all sugar apart from the above just can't do it and I've really tried. Tea without sugar is 🤢
A very informative video. Yes, over 30 years a go i gave up booze. I drank like i had a wooden leg:). in recovery they recommend sweets to the new recovering alcoholic, due to all the sugar in the alcohol.
Have no suger cravings at all, until my menstruation. One week before it starts. Some advice to balance hormones is to add some good carbs like sweet potato, but to me it seemt to make it worse. Any advice?
Sarah , I honestly don't think there is an issue allowing yourself to eat sugar before you are due on your period. Especially if you don't eat too much sugar the rest of the time. The only reason I am saying this is because I am exactly the same and it does no harm. Xx
Really interesting as I have found that if I’ve had a difficult day & my mood is low I have a coffee with 2 squares of dark chocolate and I start to feel happy! Guess this is the Dopamine effect? I think I learned that the coffee & chocolate made me happy but hadn’t considered the sugar to dopamine link. 👏🏻
I love your channel , thank you so much! I definitely find cravings have reduced a lot since giving up Diet Coke and other sweet things. I know Diet Coke does have real sugar but it 100% feels the same to me as real sugar. I’d love you to do a piece on this?
From my personal experience, when I gave up sugar almost 2 years ago, I immediately substituted things like xylotol, eurythritol, monk fruit, and allulose, instead of sugar...and I made my own keto treats instead of buying them. Gradually, my sweet cravings diminished, and now, I very rarely crave anything sweet. I think it would have been much harder for me if I had gone cold turkey.
Love your videos. Great information presented succinctly and understandably. Best explanation sugar cravings I‘ve heard, which helps when sticking with the plan to quit. Gotta find other sources of dopamine, wink wink nudge nudge 💪🏻 exercise, of course! 🏋🏻♀️
Thanks for video! I find it interesting that after a few years on keto diet (since 2017) I am into bakery products more then into sugary products. Strictly I didn' t eat bakery products for some time, maybe 3 years, but now I find myself buying bakery and craving them 🤦♀️ Even it is not sweetend, the carbs are working still as an addiction.
Yes I am a sugar/food addict. I am a massive sugar/processed food addict. In my home growing up we ate candy, cookies, cakes, pies, donuts, ice cream, milk shakes, and every other food with sugar ALL THE TIME! Breakfast was sugared cereal, pop tarts, cinnamon sugar toast with butter, tea with cream and sugar. On the way to school, I bought donuts on top of that. Everyone in my family is obese or struggles with their weight. Going sugar free seems like an impossible accomplishment. I can't seem to consume sugar in any form without cravings.
YES! I also struggle a LOT with overeating. Epic depression is also a problem. Not to mention, I have young kods, so getting sugar out of the house is kind of a no-go.
I started on keto Dec 18th but stayed between 30 and 40 carbs a day. A drastic cut but definitely wouldn't get me into ketosis or lose weight. My husband eats sugar like a kid. Lol. So I hv it in the house. Around Jan 2nd 2022 I started doing 20 carbs or less, not net carbs, my avg is 10.6. It's Feb 15, 2022 and I finally have no cravings, get fuller with much less food. It has been very hard but I also have severe depression and health issues. I haven't had insulin in 3 weeks and have lost 12 lbs in less than 2 months. I'm 66. I've been stuck in the house for close to 2 yrs bc of asthma and fear of getting sicker. The decision was easy. Change my eating habits and get my life back or die in the house lonely. I have 80 lbs to lose and I'll do it bc I've made it thru the hard part. You can too!!! ❤🙏😊 Blessings!
I have never been a sweets person, but I recently started a low carb diet. My children were eating crackers, and I could smell them across the room. It triggered a drug like withdraw and craving.
Dopamine levels are dictated by the gut biome.. cutting down sugar or starving the gut biome of sugar eventually replaces the gut bacteria with the good kind of bacteria and thus the cravings for sugar go away.. probiotics help accelerate this process and is a more long lasting solution to sugar addiction... targeting the root of the problem... when the gut bacteria is replaced with the good kind.. dopamine increases when healthy food is eaten.. everything boils down to the gut biome
I’ve never a big fan of sugar bcs my family is like opposed to consume too much sugary treats. Also I always feel weird whenever I eat desert (before I know I was allergic to dairy and can’t eat them). One day I have nerve problems in my arm and my doctor said I need to cut out sugar from my diets. I didn’t completely cut it out (I love eating rice) but it still gives a great result. In a month my CTS is getting better and 2 months in it’s completely healed. Aside from that, after 2 weeks, whenever I have no choice but to eat carbs or sugar, my body feels lightweight and dizzy. Sugar started to taste bitter (does that make sense?) and I feel weak and fatigue throught out a day. I suggest maybe dont completely cut out your sugar but consume it in a small amout, let your body adapt first! Also I’m done with lowcarb diet, after 3 months. although it does gives me huge benefit, it’s hard to implement in longer term (bcs I have multiple food allergy and carbs unfortunately is the safest food I can consume in emergency). But I still restrict my daily sugar intake (20-30 gram) and consume complex carbs instead (Rice!!). Find the balance that your body needs rather than abuse it, after all if you’re stressed your blood sugar risen.
I have a serious addiction to sugar. Ever since I was a little girl, I've been eating nothing else but sugar. I get really anxious about trying new foods, and I can't even go an hour without it. I really wish that I could stop, I've tried many times but it is so hard. I remember that when I drank juice, I would always top it off with sugar or when I ate fruit I would dip them in chocolate or sugar. Every single time that a traumatic event happens, I will eat candy and drink extra sweet tea for the rest of the night and sometimes I don't even sleep. I have OCD, and I'm always anxious it is hard.
I have experienced zero sugar cravings (in fact sugar tastes TOO sweet to me now!) or low energy dips since being on Keto. The biggest challenge for me is finding out just how many foods have sugar added! It's madness! Can we no longer, as a human race, eat food that is not sweetened for us?
I have been on a low sugar low Carb diet for 5 weeks and still have hunger pains.. When you watch all these Keto diet videos they all say after two weeks the cravings and hunger pains will subside. What would you advise to help stop those pains because I actually enjoy the foods on the diet but hate the hunger pains.
After a couple of months eating low carb I ate a fast food hamburger. I could not believe how sweet the hamburger bun tasted! Who knew there was so much sugar in hamburger buns?
Hey Dr Dan, have you ever heard of hunger pangs on a low carb diet? I've been experiencing them while transitioning to low carb for the last couple weeks. No mater how much I eat, can't seem satisfy them unless I eat something sugary like fruit or an Rx bar. What do you think?
I am 100 percent sugar addicted and from childhood- hunger pangs, and sugar cravings, I do this by eating some peanuts or by eating a couple of tablespoonfuls of butter.
Omg I’ve been having MAJOR sugar cravings lately 😭 I can’t deal with it. My healthy meals aren’t doing it for me anymore!!!! Arghhhh!!! I’ve always been a VERY healthy eater but as I’m aging I’m craving more sugar. Maybe it’s hormones/peri menopause?!? Lord help me 🤣🤣
Janet Planet me too! I think it’s hormones. I used to be able to stick to healthy eating with no problem. But once I hit 50 OMG 😮 I feel like I have very little control and always crave carbs and sugar. It’s driving me mad 😩
Gianna S wow this menopause thing is very real!!! I’m 47, an avid exerciser, always taken very great care of me and now this :( The last few days I’ve given in slightly to the cravings because I feel as if I keep pushing them down and repressing them they’re wonky going to get worse. So I ate a cookie and I had two tablespoons of ice cream and called it a day. I also ate a small piece of bread and it felt good. It did let kill me and now I’m back to not craving it so much. Have you tried that? Also I started drinking a lot of water like I used to and it’s helping as well. Let me know how it goes. If you need support write me back! I live to help and get ideas from others. Sending love, Janet
Janet Planet you’re so sweet! I’m 57 and I’ve been fighting this for around 10 years now. When I give in to the cravings the weight creeps up so then I go on a strict no carb diet and lose the weight but soon after crave again. So my weight has been yoyoing but still remaining higher than I want. It’s driving me mad. I’m taking HRT now so hopefully things will settle over the next few months. I’ll let you know 😉
Want u advice bro. i incorporates fruit n veggie (banana, apple, orange, carrot etc. )as my main carbs i very enjoy and it make me stick to this diet because im a sweet tooth guy. Is it considered as sugar addicts?

When I get hunger pangs, I do some breathing exercises. It works maybe 80% of the time.
Yes😰
After a couple of months eating low carb I ate a fast food hamburger. I could not believe how sweet the hamburger bun tasted! Who knew there was so much sugar in hamburger buns?
Recently, this is happening with me . I am totally opposite to sugary things but suddenly this Happened and I am eating sweets and bakery products
yes!

Yes
Stevia, good or bad for a sugar addict, or otherwise?
I quit sugar completely really easily, but I still occasionally want sweet food especially stodgy puddings! And fruit cake!
YES!
I’m 47, an avid exerciser, always taken very great care of me and now this :(
The last few days I’ve given in slightly to the cravings because I feel as if I keep pushing them down and repressing them they’re wonky going to get worse.
Sending love,
Janet
