Dear Charlene, thanks for this video, very useful and impressive! That would be useful, if You would translate the names of the Hung Gar moves (like Mang Fu Har San, Dan Fu Cam Yeung, ect...) into english. At 0:05 and at 4:14 You show a block, what is familiar for me from Boxing, Muay Thai and Panantukan, but I've never seen it in any kung fu. Is this from Hung Gar too?
I did Hung Gar Kung Fu for 6 years. I can say it is one of the more difficult and demanding Kung Fu disciplines to reach the black belt. I was 2 belts away from getting mine. But I just felt I needed something different to improve as a fighter because I felt stuck. I switched to boxing, and the combination of the two made me improve so much. My standup improved immensely. Adding boxing to any discipline will make you a lot better of a fighter
dude, totally agree. some kung-fu styles have excellent range of motion and extension, but lack a good defensive stance but when combined with boxing training you can get the best of both. JKD has a major boxing influence that Bruce felt help supplement what Wing Chun seemed to be missing on it's own.
There's such a huge gap between all those other academy videos and these real training ones from actual practicioners. So cool that one can even 'see' the torque from the hip and the tension being released over the arms when demonstrating the moves.
A lot of times people think Kung Fu doesn't work because when they see the forms they don't know how to apply it. I appreciate how you actually have someone there to demonstrate how to apply the technique. 😁💯
It's mostly because people that practice it never use it in actual fights, so they don't have the experience. Also not everything in traditional kung fu works in modern time. I also watch videos of instructors that also mention a lot of these forms are supposed to be training your muscle memory, and not supposed to be in actual combat.
@@ibrohiem Yes. That's true, we're taught that our skills are for self defense, and should be used as a last resort because we should always do our best to avoid conflict. I'm a 1st degree blackbelt in Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu and it took me 10 years to get. In my experience sparring, fighting, and doing technique application, I've never come across a technique that didn't have a situational* (key word lol) application. I do say situational because you are indeed right in saying that some techniques aren't applicable today, yet true Kung Fu as an art and as a theory of self defense should be constantly evolving. Though there are plenty of Kung Fu schools that don't spar or even teach technique application so plenty of people could be among those you mean that have never used their martial arts skills in combat.
A very rare woman who deeply trained and practiced the very traditional and effective art of Kung Fu of Hung Gar. Keep it up and more Hung Gar demo vlogs to come.
Charlene, your videos rock! You are exceptionally detail-oriented in explaining every technique to its full completeness and are able to simplify the method without compromising any essence of Hung Gar Kuen. If possible, could you possibly please make a video explaining how to navigate among the 3 positions (2 outside gates and 1 inside gate) "da sam sing" 打三星 partner training drills biu-sau from single bridge-hand A.K.A. single sticky hands? Timing and distance with the inside gate is something that I still have yet to master. In Wing Chun, when others defend their centerline, we end up flanking either of the 2 outside gates. How do you get comfortable being in any of the 3 gates?
Thank you so much for sharing this. It is wonderful that you are sharing your knowledge of the application of Hung Gar. I learnt many Hung Gar forms (Lau Gar Kuen, Gung Gee Fook, Chin Cheung Kuen, Lau Gar Kwun, Sir Lum Kuen and Sam Yin Kuen) over the years and it filled my heart with happiness to see your video.
Wow you present and demonstrate this style really well I saw some techniques that I learned and use in kickboxing I was curious if you have any videos of sparring i would like to see how this can be applied under pressure I've never trained in any kind of kung Fu mostly karate, kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but I'm interested in anything that can be useful for any type of situation
Awesome video! I have been studying for a very long time (almost 6 decades) and teaching for 40 years, however, whilst I have never formally studied Hung Gar, I have the deepest respect for it's effectiveness. I would like at some point to become a student of this marvelous system :) Many thanks for such a great demonstration :)
Great instruction Charlene, I love your comments at the end of the video about how the style isn’t the important factor, it’s the practitioner that determines the effectiveness and I can see it in you that you will be very effective if you ever had to use your Hung Gar👍

Just why do you not have much more people subscribed? This is awesome! Especially, because there are mostly men that I know of, doing this style of Kung Fu. Respect for your talent! 👏👏👏
Do you really think that kung fu is as effective as krav magá? If so, show me some evidence. Comparing Krav Magá, in terms of effectiveness, with kung fu, is like comparing a nuclear warhead to a spear, or a light bulb. with a torch.

Thank you so much for the English subtitles! I subbed! A lot of this is exactly what we have in Choy Li Fut. One of my favorite techniques is the Dip Jueng, very effective.

I’ve started studying Choy Lee Fut this year in Sydney Australia and I am really enjoying it. I definitely want to learn Hung Gar in the future, I’ve heard that Hung Gar and Choy Lee Fut share some similar techniques with each other. 😁
The Lama/Lion Roar style is the one that has influenced the long swinging fist techniques found in the style. Wong Fei Hung exchanged techniques with Lama Master Wong Long ( one of the senior Ten Tigers of Guangdong). It barely resembles its original village Hung Gar called Ha Say Fu.
Thanks for your videos, Charlene! Kungfu is the best! 🤜 My kung-fu style is Choy lee fut but I love other styles too, can you keep uploading more videos? I'd like to watch the forms you do in hung gar, thank you, and keep up the good work!!!

Really impressive as you're powerfully within a structure which works so well-known: joints close and reactive, etc...my compliments! I am starting to study hung gar after (a lot of baji-filled) wing chun years 7/7 hours/old tkd for higher and faster and Kyokushin with no points intention 😅/ for qi gong I find out weapons so useful to focus chi in before the empty hands in which feel air'll guess is the starting point... all this 20years of striking brought me on books too: a study of power lift and ring sports and southern Shaolin basic...❤love from Italy
Lol I remember those drills! Love Wu Dip. (I do mostly Longfist, Xingyi and N Tanglang) Great presentation though! It's great to see drills then application.
I have a question. Why spread your arms to the back instead of keeping them close to the body and ready to strike or defend? Nice Flow. Shows how much you work on your art.
@TERRY LIM most momentum is gained by rotating the Center of mass on the main body. I believe what you gain with this movement doesnt compensate for leaving yourself open to attacks like that. Thanks for the reply and oppinion on the matter.
