I first read about Mr Houghton in Combat Magazine in the UK when Bey Logan was the editor and the author of the article. It mentioned that Mr Houghton went to Hong Kong to follow his dreams studying with Lau Kar Leung as he had a great love of kung fu. Later, I became a fan of Hong Kong cinema and saw Mr Houghton in many roles, including one of the Aces Go Places films with Cantopop legends Sam Hui and Leslie Cheung which also had an interview with Mr Houghton on a UK martial arts magazine. As a British Chinese, I think Mr Houghton has a better knowledge of Cantonese and Chinese culture than I do.
@@YamamotoKazuo There's also other more softer ways to condition your hands. Like putting small green beans in a bags & striking it tenderly hundreds to thousands times a day. Damn.... that is no joke. I've hit iron pellet bags and even boulders training Buddha Palm in Hawaii similar to Iron palm, but I've always held back big time on the back of the hand like a chicken that I am. Just looking at Master Houghton to that degree freaked me out! I've seen some old school 60 or 70 year old traditional Okinawan karate ka who also trained their hands and fists to a scary level, but I must say you are way more hard core. What an amazing family! What if a TV series about them and their Kong Fu was ever made like along the lines of the American Munsters andAddams Family? But with Hong Kong flavor and Art?
I have a question regarding the iron palm. Are there any problems or drawbacks with it? Is there a problem in flexibility and motor skills? Tendon pain? Health problems?
The answer is yes. But you mustn't train like this without soaking the hands in dit di jow medicine before and after training lest you suffer arthritis and bursitis from this kind of training.
@@charlenehoughton7069 Dear Charlene, I should probably ask Your father about this (but I don't know His address), but perhaps You can answer too: 1. How long (years) shall I (or anyone else) have to train to get my hands like this? 2. Why does he only train one hand like this and not both? Is there iron leg training? 3. Why is it important that the fist (knuckles) should be flat (he says at 2:40 and 2:59)? 4. Is there any downside to this training in the long run (e.g. hard to bend the finger, sore hand, sore joints)?
@@tomcartman9434 Hi Tom! 1. Minimum 3 years to achieve good results. 2. Reason for training one hand not two.... Once iron palm is achieved it will be easy to accidentally injure someone by touching their body. So one hand is trained that way you can make contact with family and friend with the hand not trained. In tradition if you are right handed you would train the left hand. If left handed you would train the right. Reason for this.... You have to think before you use your hand. If you train your dominant hand you lash out or use it without thinking.. This way you don't hurt someone out of anger, lashing out without thinking about the consequences. We don’t do iron leg. 3. Training only the knuckles to extend to training the the knuckles to be flat.... Training the knuckles to be big and extend from the fist is also good, however the gap between the knuckles does not get trained. Thus leaving a weakness in the fist... Training the knuckles to be flat trains the fist without weakness. 4. This type of training you must have correct herbal medicine to soak the hands, you must have correct breathing exercises. Hei Kung. Without this you will damage your hands and also damage your body internally.
@@charlenehoughton7069 Thank you for your answers! There are other kung fu styles that do iron palm/fist training too, but they use different method, mainly chi kung exercises, and their hands don't grow as much, but stay normal, as if they don't do iron palm/fist training. Is their method less effective, less strong their hands?
