Some of my students want to start out burning block letters or buildings and those straight lines are a bear! So I was happy to hear you say not to do straight lines right out the shoot. 🙌🔥 I would add that the type of wood definitely makes a difference on how easy… or not… burning is. Basswood and poplar are good options and available at most craft stores.

The 'Brown Halo' around the burning is a sure tell tale that you're burning with to much heat! I used to have the very same problem, until I started to burn in layers. Pine, Oak etc hold a very high amount of resin this causes the burning tip to stick and skip along the piece of wood, the resin also carbonates on the tip and lowers the heat! Apart for the not called for language thankfully bleeped out, a clear concise video 'Congratulations'. Take care 👍😷👍

I'm looking at taking this up as a hobby, but have zero experience. Three questions:
    1) Do you hand draw the images on the wood, or do it another way?
    2) What do you do about smoke extraction / toxic fumes?
    3) What wood burner do you use?
    Thanks.

But now I'm thinking, would I have been better to go for a solid tip machine....I'm still liking the pictures and results I'm getting. I'm hopeful to make a few extra pennies selling my work. How much do you suggest is reasonable for a set of coasters? Do you varnish to protect them?

I've been doing this for gifts and such for some time on my own. But i did this in a way different manner (only now decided to see how others do it) and i put it on a temp like 700c and just burn small points allong the lines. Its also a nice aestetic might be cool to try, its a more time consuming method especially with whole black area's needing to be filled with little dots, also that other surrounding brown, kinda like it but to each their own i suppose

Wood carving is a hobby i picked up in middle school due to harry potter (tl;dr I wanted to makey own wand and a few friends asked for one too)
Then in middle school we made stamps with a burning tool, I ended up making one that was a square that would leave an empty mark for the design then made one that qas just the design. Now four years later I finally have my Pyrography set! still only basic pairing knife for actual carving

I love watching you work, Hegla. Got a question for all 'Pyromaniacs' (of which I am one): Does anyone burn indoors with no external venting? If so, what do you do to keep your house from smelling like a campfire? Of course, there are those who want just that, but not me. I am thinking about getting a Winix 5500-2. It seems to have good reviews. Thoughts and suggestions?

    • @HeglaYoutube

you're likely pressing too hard in general and not letting your tip heat up between strokes

Hi Hegla. Can I sand down the surface of the wood after it has had the picture burnt into it without it smearing (i am making a surfboard so I need to varnish it after burning and I want it to be as smooth as possible? Thanks

I recently bought a book mark with pyrography on it, it was a guy on etsy he seems to make them all pretty much the same would this have been done by hand or a machine on a computer?

How do I get rid of that tip for another tip? I have one that you take with a screwdriver unscrew it, but it doesn’t unscrew it.
