    I really like how Jumbo and Josh disagree on a lot of the cards. I generally agreed with Josh more, but hearing them hash it out is both entertaining and helps the viewer understand the card's upsides and downsides.

    I for one am psyched to have DJ lending a bit more of a "flavor matters" viewpoint to the discussion. I love Josh, but he can tend to steamroll over anything that doesnt fit his fully-tuned philosophy. Sometimes I don't care if a card will be the most powerful thing in a set, but if it has incredible flavor, or could make for a fun interaction, it still has some value to me. We're not all trying to win 50% of our games, Josh. The discussion about Ajani was a good example. Lots of us don't care that a cat deck isn't "Tier 1," it's a cat deck! It's still fun! So to have Josh constantly write off everything that isn't a Top 10 card gets old fast. I'm glad DJ was around to stick up for the more casual players like myself who think Lena, Ajani, Selfless Spirit, and similar are fun to run. Keep it up DJ, somebody has to stick up for us casuals!
    Overall it was a fun episode, but it's less fun with the constant "yeah, but that's bad, yeah, but that's not viable" every 3 minutes. Embrace the jank a little more, Josh! We appreciate the power evaluations but let other people have opinions about what makes for a fun commander experience: it's not always straight power level. It clearly matters most to you, but that doesn't mean it has to be the final word on the matter every time ;)

    18:39 you say there is nothing special about the planeswalker side of bolas. his + gives card advantage, Blue. His -3 is basically damage removal and a reference to him killling a leviathan (a 10/10 creature), Red. the -4 is necromancy, and him being powerful enough to resurrect a planeswalker. finally his Alt is a reference to his touch which is lethal and causes insanity and ie losing you mind which in magic mechanics is milling/losing your deck but Bolas is prideful/arrogant and likes to make his victims reflect before they die, thats the flavor behind having one card left which gives your opponent one last turn.

      Flavor yes but I think they were talking about the the power only. From the point of Commander niether they nor me would risk to flip it as he is strong as is, and none of his abilities is needed desperatly in a Commander deck of grixis colors.

    This was a great episode.
    Sometimes, because Josh and Jimmy just agree with each other all the time, no other avenues are explored.
    There were some great back and forths between DJ and Josh in this episode because they don't seem to agree on everything. I really liked this aspect. The friction of ideas was super refreshing.

    Have kinda been falling off the Command Zone lately 'cause it feels like Josh and Jimmy have been getting a little too narrow (for me!) about what makes good commander play, cards, etc. Having DJ on to advocate for a wider range of cards and strategies is a much needed breath of fresh air!

    Also, I am stoked for Vivian Reid. She is simply a green planeswalker who does green things. It offers an additional "naturalize" effect that has the possibility of being repeatable. The card selection option for her + is a good thing, and also repeatable, and if you get her emblem (admittedly is it an "if") you get effectively a slightly weakened overrun perpetually. Natualize, ensuring land drops/ searching out creatures, and overrun are all green abilities that go in almost every green deck. I'm happy with her.

    I can just agree with a lot of people here, that it is really nice that DJ brings a bit more diversity to the discussion. Many cards might not be played in competetive decks or spiky decks, but they can still be very fun. And in my playgroup the decks aren't that strong and are sometimes more build around flavor and like DJ said, some cards can really add to that.
    So thank you for that DJ, it's nice having you on the show :)

    If they hold up swords for when you cast Chromium, then just discard a card after you cast him in response to their spell. Still works. Also Sunclenser only removes counter from your opponents so if you feel like removing you opponent's poison counters then I guess you could do that if you felt like it.

    one thing I want to say about any kind of heavy dice: they look nice and it makes a lot of fun to roll them, BUT they also make nice dents in your cards... if you have several 1000 dollar on the table, please use small dice made out of wood or plastic.

    I'm most excited for Psychic Corrosion. Mill doesn't have a lot of engine cards for commander, and the archetype definitely needs more support. My Lazav mill deck wins it's share at around %25 but it really fizzles when it doesn't go off. More pieces are what it needs.

    DJ was a great choice. I appreciated someone who was willing to see some jank and decks that people make just for fun. Josh seems to always talk about how you should have decks at various power levels so you can play in any meta, but is then unwilling to consider less optimal versions of cards for decks, or simply cards that people want to play. Some people love cats so they're going to play Ajani, he does all the things a casual cat deck would want, it pumps up creatures, recurs cheap cats and makes cats with his ultimate. It seems like a good fit, would you include it in a tuned Arahbo 1v1 deck? Absolutely not. But most people aren't going to build a tuned Arahbo deck.

    IIRC, if an equipped and/or enchanted creature loses all abilities, then they lose any abilities the equipment and/or enchantments give them. So you would have to voltron Chromium up after you made him an invisible stalker if you want to swing in with him as one. Specific rule about it is 613.8

    Re: the setting of core sets - Core Sets used to ALL be set on Dominaria, until Time Spiral made it a post-apocalyptic setting rather than the traditional, generic Magic setting. Starting with M10 they move to be set on Shandalar, a much more miscellaneous 'mana-rich' plane. Magic Origins is the only core set until now not set on either Dominaria or Shandalaar (and even it had Liliana's storyline which began on Dominaria). Moving forward it looks like they'll be being even more flexible with the core settings to allow for reprints and minor storytelling in between the main sets.

    • @Mordalon
      @Mordalon 6 лет назад +4

      Incorrect. Core sets prior to M10 had no defined setting. It just so happens that Core sets had lots of Dominaria cards because Dominaria is where most of early Magic took place. M10 is the first Core set to have new cards, as Core sets used to be exclusively reprints, so the setting wasn't really relevant. 8th and 9th editions had stuff like Aladdin's Ring, Peach Garden Oath, Counsel of the Soratomi, and Consume Spirit, all from planes that aren't Dominaria.

    • @JediMB
      @JediMB 6 лет назад

      In addition to what Mordalon has said, M10 through M12 all had Llanowar Elves; another reason they could not exclusively take place on Shandalar.
      Elvish Mystic was introduced as a more plane-neutral alternative for M14, so it's kinda funny how it only made it into two core sets before WotC phased out 1-drop mana dorks (until Llanowar Elves returned for Dominaria).

    • @JediMB
      @JediMB 6 лет назад +1

      Also, M15 was very clearly all over the place. It foreshadowed the return to both Zendikar (with Ob Nixilis, Unshackled) and Innistrad (with Avacyn, Guardian Angel), contained a rare dual land cycle that took place on Dominaria, had a bunch of new Slivers from Shandalar, reprinted the Darksteel Citadel from Mirrodin, and had the 6-card "Soul of" Avatar cycle representing various planes.

    This may be a bit to late, but a quick FYI from a guy that works in the insurance industry. Medical bills can be negotiated. It is fully possible that Wedge can use a portion of what is earned from the Go Fund Me campaign and offer X as a write off to the hospital. They are very likely to accept that amount and move on. The physical therapist is likely the same.

    Importantly with chromium is that you ideally want to equip/aura it up after you've discarded to make it unblockable/hexproof because it loses all abilities. So play it with sigarda's aid type abilities, puresteel paladin etc

    • @VillainousVillainessViridi
      @VillainousVillainessViridi 6 лет назад +3

      I understand this, but at the same time, big events like GP Vegas tend to attract the spikier crowd. Commander as a format is great for when you don't have a lot of time to play magic, and it's ability to play well and play with basically anybody is a reason the format is one of the most popular. People who can make it out to GPs and large scale magic events are not always the same as those who are sort of stuck where they are/can't make it out to GPs for work/are more casual or infrequent players/can't afford to travel for a GP.
      At higher levels of play I think you are definitely right that you can't rely on those kinds of effects, but I don't think it's worth being so dissmissive simply because there are better options (those options might be expensive/inaccessible for some players). I think it was just a little bit off-putting hearing you and Jimmy in recent episodes being so negative about cards that weren't as powerful. I don't disagree with your assessments of the cards, in fact I think you are one of the most consistently accurate review sources I listen to. I'm not asking you to lie or fake excitement for unexciting cards, but I think it would be nice to hear some talk about cards as budget options or for silly/fun factor. Because as a viewing experience, it isn't very enjoyable to hear lots of cool cards get bashed and obviously powerful cards praised.
      At the end of the day, I love the Command Zone, and I think you guys do great work on Game Knights, but once you've been playing for a while, it can be easy to forget the more casual crowd of the game. I imagine it would be especially easy for you, as you spend a lot of time working on videos, recording podcasts, producing content for, and interacting with the community of Magic. Anyways, I know I'm just another face on the internet, and I'm sorry if anything in my comment upset you in any way. If you're reading this, I hope you have a good rest of the evening.

    • @commandcast
      @commandcast  6 лет назад +3

      I'm not upset, I just disagree. Have you played for-fun EDH at a GP before? It's not what you seem to think. I played multiple games against kids age 10-12. I've played against people with $50 budget decks and themes like "all white-bordered cards" or "all misprints". If you believe all the games are just "the spikier crowd" well, that has not been my experience. Far from it.
      And to your other point: I feel it's my job to evaluate the power level of a card, especially in set reviews. People don't need me to tell them if it's "fun" or not. They can analyze that for themselves. In fact, they SHOULD decide that for themselves because every person's idea of fun is unique to them. My opinion on how silly something is just isn't that useful to the average viewer. I'm not saying I'll never comment on that aspect, I'm just saying that's not likely to be my main emphasis very often. -JLK

    • @VillainousVillainessViridi
      @VillainousVillainessViridi 6 лет назад +1

      In all fairness, though I have played a lot of commander, I've only ever done it at a large event once (and winning with a precon of all things), and in small groups everywhere else. My experiences recently are probably skewed becuse the meta at my store is a lot of spikier stuff like Locust God and Gattock Teeg. It occured to me that what is fun can be different depending on who the players are, but I didn't think of the personalization aspect of EDH. Thank you for the insightful response!

    Can't believe you two talked down Chromium and Palladia-Mors. Both would make fantastic voltron commanders, especially Palladia-Mors. Her second ability of 'hexproof until she deals damage' is -SO- easily abusable in Naya colors too.

  • @p1k4nurxp13sr
    @p1k4nurxp13sr 6 лет назад +3

    I sort of disagree with your opinion on the new Liliana, with regards to Gisa and Geralf being way better. Liliana does what planeswalkers do best and is versatile, as all her abilities actually matter. In addition, her minus 3 is screaming for combo fodder. The minus 3 goes infinite with Phyrexian Altar and a 1-drop, as opposed to Gravecrawler only, making her excellent in Grimgrin decks. Any self-mill deck, such as Sidisi, Brood Tyrant (which is what I play), LOVES this card, and this card is like triple-duty in that deck, as all 3 functions do relevant things. In self-mill, again with Phyrexian Altar (or Ashnod's Altar+filter), this goes infinite with Stitcher's Supplier- if you have an Eldrazi titan or Gaea's Blessing in your maindeck, you go actual infinite. Given any sort of trigger abuse, this is insta-win. Also, Liliana's Contract + Arcane Adaption/changelings = Profit

    I find Josh to be a bit pessimistic about cards. if Ajani would work well in a cats deck there's no need to laugh about the idea and shut it down. Magic is about having fun and testing interesting brews as much as it is playing the obviously powerful cards

    • @Mordalon

    • @Kydrou

      That is why i watch Game Knights, as you always see there's a lot of flavor in the decks played.
      I have an Ezuri elf tribal, but the phyrexian blue/green, not the mono green one, that my friends call "it's Spike-y"; yet all it does is play elves from all planes, "elect" (pump) the one i want to sit on Tarkir's Dragon Throne to command my horde, and squish the multiverse under the elven reign. No infect, no Craterhoof, only 2 creatures aren't elves (the insect that bounces elves, and a mage of the hours in case someone wants to combo), but always my go-to plan is overwhelm and conquer.
