  • Originating in the area south of the Great Lakes, the Kickapoo people (Kickapoo: Kiikaapoa or Kiikaapoi; Spanish: Kikapú) are an Algonquian-speaking Native American and Indigenous Mexican group. The Kickapoo Tribe of Kansas, the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma, and the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas are the three federally recognized Kickapoo tribes that still exist in the United States today. The bands from Texas and Oklahoma are connected politically. The Kickapoo people of Kansas were relocated from their reserve in southern Missouri in 1832 as part of a land swap. There are about 3,000 registered tribal members.
