  • Nearly one year after shipwrecking off the coast of Hawaii, Zingaro crowdfunded a magnificent Oyster 485. Join us for a tour of this vessel, and we'll show you what it's like to buy a boat that has been sitting for a LONG time. Made possible by Patrons/Kickstarter - Welcome to our new journey, my friends. Thank you, to everyone who made this possible, and all those who continue supporting this channel.

So my take as an Oyster 485 owner. You did great! Good job. Your floor plan is different than ours, but still looks fantastic. You’ll appreciate having more than two winches each side, although the small aft one is unique. The traveler doesn’t need a winch as the mainsail on this boat is small at about 33% of the sail area. Keep an eye on your Lewmar 60 series hatches as all our leaks were actually coming through the rivets. Defender sells a replacement rivet kit so go there to find the proper rivet size. I have the spec in my records if you need it. Keep a pop rivet gun on board. Oyster sells OEM gaskets for their windows. The early Seafresh watermakers had a plastic sleeve inside the membrane assembly and these would get scored inside, and they are no longer available. You can talk to Eddie at Oyster as he was sad about us tearing out our unit. Seemed he had fixes, but in my mind the whole thing was going to be an expensive tail chasing exercise.

So great to have a knowledgeable 485 owner and sailor willing to share .
This boat is a real Cruising Oyster designed by Don Pye ( of Holman. And Pye designers). He is a designer of comfortable cruiser racers . Many of the other oysters, like the Humphreys may be faster but less comfortable on long passages and upwind .
You will have some wonderful adventurers with this yacht .
I think it must also gave been one of the first made too

Congrats James! Great video and absolutely brilliant intro! I’m a multihull fanatic too, but a pragmatic one, so I agree with you on this choice. A really awesome boat for its purpose. Oysters are real Rolls Royces of the sea. Heavy, well built, well equipped, “cost is absolutely not an issue” type of boat. They also used to have a super aftermarket service, with a travelling team, but I don’t know if that’s the same after the bankruptcy and new owners a few years ago.
The trouble with lots of nice equipment is that it’s lots of repairs and maintenance, of course, but once you get up to date, the quality level means the maintenance hours probably will be ok. Digging into and getting to know a boat this way is extremely fascinating. Been there a couple of times. It’s like discovering a hidden treasure. The number of things to fix might feel overwhelming at times, but the pleasure of successfully ticking off items from the list is very satisfying, each one bringing you closer to a fully operational ship.
Good luck with the tidying up and fixing. As you said, the biggest job seems to be the teak deck. A good one looks beautiful, but they’re really not durable in hot climates. I think I’d not repair it but just rip it all off and either just paint, perhaps with Kiwigrip, or glue on a more modern version of teak like Flexiteek. Most likely I’d consider a EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) type soft rubberlike decking that is light, insulating, much nicer to walk on barefoot in the sun. Even dark colours don’t get hot. Easier to lay and cheaper. You can have any thinkable colour and pattern, including teak look. On our cat that’s what we’ll use in a year or so. It’s been used on surfboards for more than 20 years. I don’t know which brand is best, but there are several. Some examples I found: seadek.com, raptordeck.com, gatorstep.com, marinemat.net

OYSTER !!! Sweet ! That center cockpit is premium ! Ground the mast to the water so if you get a lightning strike it won't be too bad like in "parlay revival " or " sailing into freedom" tragic lightning damage !

@@thelastpirate Hmmmm no reason to lie about a comic releif. In Asia they train monkeys to climb on the boat and grab stuff. I've even seen one find an open hatch slid through and open the main hatch to let someone on there boat. It be crazy. I'll tell you what, let me know when your in the area up in Asia and if I can I'll take you to areas I've seen it happen.
It's so out there it's stupid to make it up. I just wish we had video az easily as today with go pros unfortunately it was shitty film cameras so........

    Hell yeah. Oysters are awesome.
Lots of room for crew. I understand your need for a safe (center cockpit) well built boat after the catastrophe of Zingaro.
I’m glad you didn’t over leverage yourself with a huge loan. Now you’ll have money to buy a dingy when needed. I’m sure views will come back quickly when work/sailing starts.
Hopefully Kim will be back when she’s done with school.
