Great work sir. Thank you for sharing your process.
No problem! Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for sharing Matt! Everybody and their brother are using this technique here in Arkansas. It's pretty well saturated the market with puffs of smoke. Interesting tidbit...people are charging big $$$ for a class to do what you just shared for free! :)
TIS IS TRUE‼🚪👨🏾🦯pi.
Thank you so much. I’m not surprised! Well, all I can say is, I love helping people with my videos!
We so appreciate it...promise!! Thank you for ALL of the instructional videos you make for us!!
@@gentlegnt I love doing it so I will definitely continue. Thank you!
Good video is your flash on TTL or on manual
Thanks! I’m always on manual.
Great content!!! A vet in the industry providing gems!!!!
Thank you so much!
I really love your videos! I've learned so much the past two years from watching them all. Keep it coming!
Thanks, will do!
I just ordered a small handheld. These are great tips!
Awesome! Thank you!
Similar to some of your other videos and techniques, I was able to follow this one pretty much verbatim as well (I even purchased the same fog machine - hey, if it ain't broke...) and achieve similar results. I then kicked it up and used a 4 light setup (pretty much the same setup you recommend for your composite cutouts) and produced even more dramatic results by adding gels to my edge lights. Your videos are helping me level up my game very quickly and put offerings together that the athletes and families I'm starting to work with will absolutely love. I'm still a little nervous about using the fog machine in an actual gym with smoke detectors so have been sticking to my studio for that so far.
It's pretty exciting to be able to follow your content and have it just freggin' work. I can't wait to try out the dramatic volleyball team photos (that's actually what first led me to your content) and the plate image compositing (mine will be a volleyball player diving for a pancake but same concept).
That’s all great! I’m so glad you’ve been able to use my content to help. Thanks for letting me know!
Awesome video. I love these and seeing your different ideas. I play with these a lot and your breakdowns are still helpful. I like to set up lots of lights to light up the fog and get a couple rim lights and main light but I still find my favorite shots have lots of light cut away, I have to work on that in my garage with limited space to keep light from bouncing around. Anyway, your comments really help solidify/clarify the ideas that work best for me. Appreciate your effort putting these out!
I’m glad I’ve been able to help. Thanks for all the feedback it’s very appreciated!
Great video Matt!
Thanks brother!
Thank you for sharing this Matt. Excellent explanation. It’s inspiring.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love this video. You always provide great info and explain why as you show how to make the shot!
Thanks Dawn! I really appreciate all your support.
I have just invested in a fog machine so going through your video surely will help produce some solid results right out of the gate. Great video keep them coming Matt!
Glad it helped! Good luck!
Thanks for this
Will try tomorrow
What was your flash set at?
Which one?
Awesome video Matt! Thank you!
My pleasure!
Thank you for this video. I have been watching a lot of your videos and they contain a wealth of knowledge!
You are so welcome!
Another great video, Matt. Very clear explanation. Especially appreciate the insights into your creative process. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
great video, which fog machine do you use??
amzn.to/4hxSto0
would you be able to achieve the same affect without a soft box light and only a camera flash?
No because it would be flat lit. The light has to be more directional. Either on top or on the side. And you need a second light to light the fog.
Love your videos and have learned a lot from watching your set ups. Have you ever had an issue using these fog machines and tripping smoke alarms? Since the machine is water based I am assuming there would not be an issue but my school is super paranoid about this happening. Any feedback you can give me would be helpful. Thanks!
I have no but I know others that have. It really depends on what type of smoke alarm the facility has. Some are based on heat and some are based on blockage. The ones based on heat shouldn’t be an issue but the others could be worked around depending on if they’d let you shut them off or not temporarily. I’d talk to them first to see.
Thanks for the knowledge Matt! Just subscribed!
Thanks for the sub!
Really love your work and the information you provide, Matt! This is a big help.
Glad to hear it!
Great video and straight to the point. Which fog fluid is best for indoors that won't set off fire alarms in schools?
I need to do a test on that. I’ve never set one off but I know a lot of others have.
Does the beauty dish have white or silver interior?
I have both but I think this one was the white.
Legend Matt thanks a ton
Absolutely!
Very well done Matt, the only thing I could comment on would be when making a video for our education, a Tether hook up would help to show us your results. Great job.
I do that a lot in other videos! This was an actual senior shoot.
This is what my fog pics have been missing! I haven't really like lighting them from the front..thanks for the tips!
Absolutely!
Thanks for a great review. Wht about the Ulanzi FM01 FILMOG? They are quite similar I think... What is the difference? :)
I’m not sure I’ve not heard of it. I do know that SmokeNINJA is the most safe hand held fogger out there.
@ Thanks for your answer. I think the Ulanzi and Telesin are identical…
which portable power supply do you need to run this outdoors?
The batteries are built in to the Westcott FJ 400s!
Thanks. What about the fog machine? Do you use portable power? If so what do you recommend?@@MattHernandez
Using FJ-X3 trigger with FJ400 can I also sync speedlights/or other external flashes? OR is it proprietary? @@MattHernandez
U probably need a generator to run. A fog machine sucks a lot of power because it has a heating element
Hello, do backlights have to be as strong as your main lights for a good result? I use a Godox AD400 and AD300 is my main lights. Should my backlight be ad400 as well ?
It depends on what power they are at. I’m not familiar with Godox unfortunately. Thanks for watching!
No sandbag ?
Haha no sandbag. Outside I would for sure
Which fog machine do you use? Or do you have any recommendations?
This is my new one and I highly recommend it! SmokeNINJA Pro:

So helpful!!! Thank you for sharing! One question... Do you have some sort of modifier on your fog machine to make the fog fan up and out like that? Or is that just from blowing towards the bleachers?
Awesome thank you! It’s just blowing towards the bleachers to make it spread out.
Awesome work /teacher
Thank you! 😃
Matt do you use any special fog liquid so that it doesn’t set off alarms in school gyms?
I sure don’t. I’ve never done that surprisingly
Awesome video and just what I needed for a shoot, like this, tomorrow! My only question is, and I hope I haven't missed it in the video, what power is the main light on?
Thanks! I’m glad I could help. I believe I did say it was around 5.5-5.7 out of 9.
Thank you! Last question, where is your stand from?@@MattHernandez
Curious - what do you use on your boom to keep the strobe from spinning on the end? I use godox lights, but I've never been able to successfully use a boom without it spinning from the weight.
Nothing just as is. The Westcott FJ400s tighten well and don’t spin.
Can you add a link for the light stand?
amzn.to/3Z3APSg
Hey Matt, I love your stuff. I have one quick question. How do I not get the fringing from the light behind? I tried a similar setup and I'm getting the red light from the gel on the edge of the subject. Not sure how to get rid of this though. Thanks in advance,
Thanks man! I’m not exactly sure what you’re talking about I’d have to see it.
Good stuff Matt 🤘🏻
Thank you!
Just found your video. 👊🏿🔥🔥🔥❤
Awesome!
What was your strobes set at ?
I’ve got that info posted for my IG and Patreon subscribers!
Thx! Great video! ..but I gotta say that the "Holy %&$" moment was when buddy one-handed the basketball.... Dem some BIG HANDS lol 😜
Hahahahaha thanks for watching!
Nice shot 🎉
What type of fog do you prefer? I have experienced with a couple of different ones but haven't found the right density I like yet. Great video, thanks for posting!
I have to be honest I’m not really even sure what kind I use haha. I’ll have to pay more attention to that in the future. Thanks for the feedback!
@MattHernandez I know this comment is old but I would LOVE to know too, because the fog I've been using looks like a giant white blast, yours looks so subtle and mysterious compared :)
What fluid do you use?
amzn.to/3qUwOkq
Great Video!!
Thanks!
Would I get the same results using a rgb video light to light the fog and a strobe to light my subject?
It would depend on how strong the video light is. Typically that’s pretty hard to do unless you’re in a really dark location because the video lights aren’t strong enough.
Thank you so much!
You’re welcome!
I love this, my question is what else can you use if you don’t have a a second fj400. I own one now but I’m not necessarily in the position to purchase another at this time. Are there alternatives for a back light ?
Thank you! Yes an FJ80 or FJ200 would work just fine for something like this!
@@MattHernandez awesome! What about a Led light ?
Nice explanation. I enjoy following your work.
Awesome, thank you!
Matt, Do you take any precautions to avoid setting off smoke detectors when using the fog machine indoors?
It’s never happened to me honestly, so no haha. I think it depends on how much fog there is and maybe what kind of fog
@@MattHernandez I recently photographed HS Seniors Volleyball at their gym and I used fast dissipating fog. It worked fine, but I became concerned when I noticed the fog being drawn upwards towards a ventilation fan. Good to know you have not had any issues!
It’s not fire smoke or smoke from burning things… it’s a chemical smoke or dust or fog… but you can test it… but inform first the fire rescue that you are doing a test… put a lot of this smoke under a smoke detector… and have fun!
@@IvanBoden It’s fog, moisture…..it’s not smoke. Does your hot shower steam set of your smoke alarm.
And awesome vid as usual, Matt!
Hey Matt! Good pointers on Lighting! Which fog machine are you using and what kind of features to look for?
The remote and a decent output are the main thing. Here’s the link to this one. Thank you!
amzn.to/3Lg1CTT
Thanks Matt! Cheers!
So i noticed you have a battery grip for the A7RV. Have you had any issues with it. I used a Meike version of it and the camera started acting weird.
No mine has been great, but it’s also a Sony.
@@MattHernandez thank you. Big fan of the channel.
What stand are you using for lighting?
I believe they are Impact C stands.
Whats the model of your light tripod ?
This one:
amzn.to/3QICGYm
The one that is with the lightbox not the Manfrotto @@MattHernandez
Thank you, that was very helpful and interesting!
Glad it was helpful!
Are there any concerns using a fog machine indoors? I've got one, but have been hesitant to add it to my shoot.
Not for me there’s no haha. I’ve heard of people setting off smoke alarms but I’ve never had that happen and I’ve used them a lot.
Does it dissipate pretty quickly, or does it hang around for a while? And thank you for responding so quickly @@MattHernandez
Very helpful tips.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent video, thank you..
You’re welcome!
Are you concerned about setting of fire alarm in the gym?
I’m not! I’ve never had that happen.
It’s fog, moisture…..it’s not smoke. Does your hot shower steam set of your smoke alarm?
Any worries with Smoke Alarm going off with the use of fog? Im scared I'd trigger the spinkler system.
this is my concern. please let me know if you get an answer
No I’m not! I’ve never had that happen.
I haven’t ever had that happen!
It’s fog, moisture…..it’s not smoke. Does your hot shower steam set of your smoke alarm?
@@PhillyPimpStick I don't shower next to a smoke alarm lol.
Thanks
No problem
This was great. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
great vid!
Thank you!
Great video
Thanks!
Amazing
Thanks!
@@MattHernandez using your techniques I did my 1st team photo shoot with the strobes they turned out great… thank you again for putting easy to follow videos.
dope
Thanks!
Have you ever accidentally set off the smoke alarms at a venue using the fog machine? This is my biggest fear.
Yeah, people say that a lot but fortunately I have never set one off. Knock on wood lol
It wouldn’t do that since it’s condensation and not smoke.
Great video !!!! What unit are you using on camera to trigger the strobes? I have a couple Godex flashes and wondering if that unit will control them.
@ pretty sure Matt uses Westcott. If your Godox are relatively new.. any X2 trigger should work.
Beauty dish???
Are you asking what a beauty dish is or if I used one?
kwa kwa kwa no understand
Say what?
