  • Stratford Square Mall located in Bloomingdale, IL opened March 9th 1981 and was in operation until April 21st 2024. Many memories of this mall and hope that it is repurposed instead of demolished but only time will tell.

    Thank you Shawn for filming this beautiful mall before it closed its doors yesterday, 4-21-24. It’s so tragic to see this architectural masterpiece go. Why not revitalize it? Repurpose it for the greater good of the community. Such a waste of good architecture. The wood paneled ceilings, the wooden columns. The wood work all around its architectural design is phenomenal. I’m so sad to see this mall perish like it did. Shame on the previous owners who didn’t have any plan to revive this mall since they took over in 2019. This is by far one of the most beautifully designed and aesthetically appealing mall I’ve seen on the internet. It’s too bad I’m not in the Chicago area to enjoy such a masterpiece. I’m happy you’re preserving a part of retail history by filming this. This mall will always be remembered by its beautiful architectural design and one of the most aesthetically appealing in history. I really pray that the community will try to preserve its architecture for the planned redevelopment. Rather than demolishing such a work of art, why not repurpose it as a museum of modern art, featuring local art from the Chicago area. Add offices, community theater, indoor park and recreation. Even revitalize one of the levels as apartments and studios. They can even revitalize it and bring the Century Theater back as well as other retail stores. I’m praying there is an active effort to save the architecture & aesthetics of this mall. Stratford Square Mall deserves better. I’ve seen other malls being repurposed as community colleges, and other multi use facilities without the thought of demolishing it. The community deserves better. Bring back life to this beautiful building. 🙏

      Thank you for watching. I do hope the Village of Bloomingdale will not demolish it and will find use or find a developer that can repurpose and redevelop the mall into something useful for the community. It's seems such a shame to destroy the architecture of the building so hopefully something good will happen. I am also glad I did visit and record this video as a record for history if they do demolish it. I am also worried if it sits too long, it will be inevitable that people will break in and vandalize the place which in turn will seal it's fate of being destroyed. Thanks again for watching and really appreciate the great comment.

    It's sad to see the malls in the USA dying 😢. Thanks for taking us on this reminiscing tour. I spent my teens and twenties in the local malls. Met a lot of new people there too.❤

    I worked there at hair performers in the 80’s. The place was hopping back then and we all used to gather at the bad at houlihans or the Mexican restaurant that was across the hall from it, can’t remember the name. Those were the days my friend! So many happy times with great friends and family❤️

    Such a shame that it got demolished. Lots of people's jobs lost as well. I prefer trying on clothes and especially shoes in stores and now there are less places to go. Thank you for documenting this mall ❤️

    So sad i grew up at this mall. I hung out here as a teenager in the 80's.Had many Friday night date nights at the movie theater in the 90's I later bought my wife's engagement ring here. Thanks for all the great memories SSM. BTW the restaurant was a Red Robin not Ruby Tuesday's.

      @ShawnKodi  2 месяца назад +1

      Yeah, it was Red Robin there in the later years. I do think at one time it was a Ruby Tuesday or another restaurant before Red Robin. Many good times, movies and things purchased from this mall, it is sad to see it go

    Wow what a shame! So sad so many malls are dying out. A lot of our smaller malls are dying due to so many massive ones being built in the big city. But i'm sure they will start dying out too with all the online shopping. I know our stores in my local town are closing down through online shopping!

    Such a beautiful mall on the inside, me and my friends would always come here on the weekends and go to the movie theater, cheapest tickets anywhere really. I think Woodfield being built was a slow and dreadful end to Stratford with the final nail in the coffin being Covid.

    Tbh I feel the other reasons why certain malls close is due to them not keeping up with newer stores. Like woodfield mall has, hot topic, LEGO store, Spencer’s, GameStop, bath and body works, Sephora, coach, and more. When you go to Oakbrook mall it’s an outdoor mall with Apple, peleton, Amazon, macys, and more, same with Yorktown a little. I feel if malls don’t have updated popular stores not too many people go to those locations. Tbh when I moved back in 2013 a friend told me about round 1 cause of all the arcade games, and my friends and I would go bowling to. It’s sad this mall is going to be demolished.

    • @ShawnKodi
      @ShawnKodi  2 месяца назад

      With the loss of the big anchor stores like Sears, Carsons and Macy's leaving, the mall could not survive so even if they did update with more specialty shops without the draw of a big anchor store they probably would have still struggled. Hopefully it will not be demolished and will see it turned into something useful.

    I miss these malls..Matthew in big trouble!! LoL so sad … A local mall near me will be torn down so they can put condos. They of course will have a grocery store and other stores there but there goes the entire shopping experience and not even a real mall they put in their high end stuff so it’s not like you’ll have free parking anymore. It’s very sad we have turned into basically an Asian concrete jungle it sucks!
