That was a great video, Vance. I’ve had my R5 for a shade over a year now, and have come to very similar conclusions to yours. It’s a fantastic stills camera, with great short-burst video capabilities. Look forward to seeing more from you!
Very nice review Vance. I believe firmware 1.6 essentially eliminates the overheating concern in everything except 8K raw, if you select the high temperature option. It substantially extends the recording time in 8K raw exceeding 43 minutes based on several tests and other 4K and 8K options experienced no overheating. In my view I would recommend the R5 for any prior Canon user with good EF glass. Sony and Nikon users need to think hard about changing their current system because Canon, Sony and Nikon all have excellent options these days. Switching systems costs a lot of money in selling the old system lenses and buying into an alternative mount. Just my opinion.
Hi Vance, thanks for review. Im 90% convinced to get this camera. Just wondering if you know anything about underwater photography and how the r5 performs. Im working with a mark5div and still on the learning process but would love to move towards more recordings than photos. Just not sure if the r5c can perform underwater given the fan...
Great question Le Yu. I'm not experienced with underwater photography/videography but I can only imagine the R5 would give great results since the image is outstanding. If you ever give it a try please let me know how it works out. :)
Great Review Thanks I have been using this camera for almost 2 years, almost perfect in photography Of course, last month I upgraded my camera to R5C R5C is a completely different animal It was far beyond my expectations I have previously owned C70 and C200 And if it had a built-in ND, it would be very close to a Cinema camera Of course, for photographers, the Canon R5 is still a better choice Because of IBIS But for videographers, especially on a low budget Upgrading to R5c is highly recommended
Nice review. I’m a photographer with clients screamed for video so thinking of buying R5C. It is short bursts of video however I’ve read 4k is better on the 5c. What do you think of the C70?
Good question. I've never compared the 5c to the R5 but from what I've seen the 5c is so close to the R5 that I think most wouldn't notice the difference. .. The c70 is a beast. The only reason I don't upgrade my C300 mark II to the c70 is because I need a viewfinder. I use it constantly. If you don't need a viewfinder and don't take a lot of photos I would take the c70 over the 5c. The built in ND's and longer recording capabilities (should you need them) is reason enough.
Thank you! .. Personally I'm not a fan of battery grips since they make the camera bigger and heaver. I bring extra batteries instead. If you are doing vertical photography though, especially for long periods of time it might be useful. It would provide a shutter button in the right spot in vertical mode and of course lengthen the battery life.
My C3 set for 4K 120P, the overheat icon shows when I shoot still for awhile even I don't shoot video at all. Canon still has not fixed the freeze problem on the latest firmware update.
Biggest problem with Canon that it uses outdated, not BSI-CMOS sensors and has low sensitivity due to ridiculous megapixel counts or if they use later sensor they are huge like R3 or R1. I like more Sony A7sIII. By now they should have been experimenting with SPAD or x1000 more sensitive graphene sensors to shring camera size, weight and cost.
Very informative. I wanna know about shooting handheld videos with non-IS lenses with the R5. Will the internal IS of the camera compensate well? Thank you!
Thank you Prateek. Yes, the internal IS is extremely good. You can choose a couple of different settings. The strongest setting does crop in slightly but its comparable to a tripod. The shot at 5:47 to 6:01 in this video is handheld at the strongest setting using the 24-70 EF lens which has no IS. As you can see, it's really stable.
Yes, that version has IS. .. When in video mode push the Q button on the back of the camera and then choose the Image stabilization mode icon on the right side of the screen. You can briefly see me select this mode at 3:20 in the video. ... This will allow you to select the strength of the movie digital IS.
That's a great question. I have a lot of respect for Sony but I prefer Canon's colors. For that reason I would recommend the R5, unless you are regularly filming for long durations in which case I would recommend the Canon C70 or C300 Mark iii.
Great review, very nice footage.
Thank you, much appreciated. :)
Loved this video. We need more reviews based from real-world experience.

Thank you very much! Your comment will inspire me to make more videos. :)
Ditto at the 8month mark 😀
Hi. Have you tried the R5 in low light with NON-IS lenses in a hand-held setting?
This is great Vance! The way you explain things is very unbiased and informative..straight to the point style
Thank you bro!

Great points Tom. I completely agree.
I switched from Sony to canon and couldn’t be happier 😎

Very useful video, to know and to buy the r5, thanks!

@@vancecrofoot thanks so much for your response. Looks like maybe I need a r5 and a c70. Lol.
Thank you, great video, put my mind at ease
You're very welcome. Thanks for the nice comment!
Whats your thoughts on the battery grip u can get for it? (btw great video)

Did you make a video on how to set up your R5, im interested but didn’t see a video on it.
Thanks for commenting Priscilla. I will make a video on how I set this camera up. :)

Damn, they need to fix that. Personally I rarely use the 4K 120P on the R5. I think it looks mediocre, especially compared to the 4K 60P.
Biggest problem with Canon that it uses outdated, not BSI-CMOS sensors and has low sensitivity due to ridiculous megapixel counts or if they use later sensor they are huge like R3 or R1. @@vancecrofoot thank you! All my canon lenses are non-IS. Hence my question.
Hey, i purchased R5 camera, version 1.5.0 last week. IS (image stabilization) mode is not available in this version , does it has an in build IS?
Yes, that version has IS. .. When in video mode push the Q button on the back of the camera and then choose the Image stabilization mode icon on the right side of the screen. Would you recommend the canon R5 over the Sony FX 3? For video
That's a great question. I have a lot of respect for Sony but I prefer Canon's colors. For that reason I would recommend the R5, unless you are regularly filming for long durations in which case I would recommend the Canon C70 or C300 Mark iii.
r5 4 lyfe
That’s right…or until the R5 Mark II comes out.
