Thanks for a great video. For me, who doesn’t shoot any video at all, my R5 is in fact the “perfect” camera. Coming from the 50 mpxl 5Ds, I was more than used to very large image files. That’s why I’ve always used a powerful gaming laptop, and have never had issues with processing them. Just got a new laptop; It seems as if the 45 mpxls from the R5 takes more processing power than the 50 mpxls from the 5Ds. I typically have PS/LR and a few other processing programs going on at the same time-this is the way I used to process images from the 5Ds too. Let’s face it, the R5 is a beauty; by far the best camera I’ve ever owned!
Yes, RF glass is very expensive and even if you got the budget, you can't get your hands on it (at least in Holland) because of chips not being available. But, Canon has this nice adaptor ring so you can continue using your EF glass. I've been working now for a few months with the R5 and mostly with the EF 28-300 without problems.

Great video - quick note - the rode NTG video overloads and peaks on standard mode easily. Even if you set your levels properly, the mic will peak at the mic level which is likely why you were getting distorted audio occasionally in the vid. If you turn on the -20dB pad and then turn up the volume on the mic, the overloading will stop.
dang, i was hoping no one would notice. It bugged me the entire time editing! But I was so pleased with the takes I couldn't bother to rerecord everything after setting up. Thanks for that useful tip though!

This was really helpful even though i am currently watching it after buying the R5.. i have to agree with you. It is the best piece of hardware that i have used in a REALLY long time.
You hit the nail on the head: without the new generation of processors, this (and similar) cameras would be continual exercises in pain. The M1 processor is today’s savior, with simply unbelievable increases in throughput. By “unbelievable,” I mean tasks that took minutes now take seconds. I will be curious to see how similar computers on the non-Apple side do (as Intel appears to sink into oblivion). As for lens cost, look at what Fujifilm’s medium format lenses go for, or virtually any Leica lens. Canon seems willing to break with tradition in the RF design, incorporating materials that are not only very rugged, but drop the weight. And, you mention “future-proof” multiple times: the R5 has the reserve computing power to do even more, and so far Canon has been pretty good with meaningful updates, including the next one due next week.
My dad just bought me my first professional Canon camera of EOS R5 for all-time best early Christmas present. So I can't really return it for these issues. I'll just enjoy it more than my T7 for now.
I shot over an hour of 8K30 RAW at room temperature and although the camera did get hot, it didn't stop recording. I'll be testing it next summer in direct sunlight, which will get any black camera to 70 degrees celsius easily.
Great review I'm excited to shoot with it very soon I'm going to rent one for the weekend very soon from Samy's Camera in So Cal. I'm headed to the Los Angeles International Auto Show in a few weeks. I have been shooting with a 5D mkIV so now I'm stepping up to The Big Leagues! David K

You made making proxy files sound harder than it is. It is literally 2 clicks of the mouse. Granted, you have two wait a wait for the files to transcode, once you hit “create proxy files”…….not a big deal.
bought a 4K pc in late 2020, with a 3090 (retail), i couldnt believe how bad it was at handling the R5 images on LR, then i got a 1K M1 IPAD. Super gamechanger
I feel my pc is well spec'd. However, I too encountered the issue with my video editing software crashing. As a result, I bought the Ninja V and record the footage to Pro Res. Unfortunately you lose some of the features that the camera has to offer. However, I'm happy with it. I couldn't justify buying the Ninja V+ . Also, on the Ninja V+, I believe you still don't have the full suite of features which enables you to take advantage of all the R5's features.
Just got the R5 and the 100-500 for wildlife and birding last week, tried my friends 14-35 f4 and 15-35 2.8 got the 2.8 today, don't really need the 2.8 since the R5 iso is awesome but rather spend the extra 700 bucks than regret it later when I'm inside some cathedral and need the 2.8.
I had one overheating issue, it was a 90 degree day outside and I got a warning after shooting photos and video for about an hour and a half! I love the camera and I bought it because I wanted a future proof camera that would last me at least 4 years! I also knew if canon came out with 8k, sooner than later Apple would put out a computer to handle the codecs! Now I plan on using the 8k more often because I have a MacBook Pro Max, it’s exciting
I love my R5, just hoping canon brings out a 35 1.4 at 500-550 grams - with 67mm filter. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 my 50 1.2 is heavy and not a good walk around lens. My 35 1.8 IS is just not weathersealed or suitable to protect rain or humidity getting into the camera.
I'd say it's enough for 1.5-2 projects at a time! Obviously that depends on how long the takes/shoots are. But I typically can fit 2 shoots, or 2 youtube tutorials on that card at a time! Hope that helps!
I'm so glad this video went this direction.... Since I already received my R5 yesterday :) lol Oh, and I'm a straight up photographer. Never shot vids, although now, I might have to try it, if I think about it at the right time and place. Great review :)
I love my R5. My last job got an R5 and the 1080p/Clog3 was amazing for 720p broadcast delivery; push/pull in post. If I was daring, I would shoot in 4K to have more flexibility in post but a 1.5hr turnaround made me cut it close a couple of times. In my new job, I shoot on the C300 or FS7 and it’s made me consider “rigging” out my R5 for video; already have a NinjaV. Seeing the R5’s progress over the past 5 months really validates that this camera was future proofed. That being said, my favorite feature is the “clarity” slider for stills…..but 8KRAW/4KHQClog3 is nice too…..oh and it’s weather-sealed.
I've watched a few of your videos and liked them. Not this one however. Too wishy-washy, like you can't make up your mind. Its good, well "mostly". How you shot in 4K 120 without overheating is unimaginable. I guess you were somehow more lucky than countless others. Not sure? The whole proxy file thing is also a PITA and M1's are not the the end all for the majority of the world. Your reviews are solid, good and helpful "mostly", just not this one.
Thank you for the feedback, I think the tone of this video perfectly captures why I feel the way I do about it. It's not the end all be all camera by any means, but it does a few things very well making it a very hard decision to move away from it. Thanks for your thoughts! Since Davinci 17.4 davinci can reder x.265 its work fine with a 2080 an i7.

If the setting allows bringing a diffuser of some sort may help! Or a polarized/graduated ND filter could help cut down some of the highlights!

The eye auto focus is really accurate, and won’t jump to a new subject unless you tap on it!

try the tamron 35mm f/1.4 it is really amazing footage, so sharp and stability is excellent for video after upgrading the lens firmware.
