“Because if I wasn’t ugly, you wouldn’t have questioned whether I was a good witch or a bad witch” lolol I definitely didn’t catch Glinda’s shade as a kid
Fun and unnecessary fact lol, Im a distant relative of L Frank Baum. But if you go to his hometome Chitenango, NY they have Oz Stravaganza at the end of May and its a whole fair about the land of Oz and people dress up as the characters, theres writing contests, silent auctions, special guests connected to the books and movies, parades, etc etc. its really fun! I went every year as a kid. I also remember the Chitenango Library is themed with Wizard of Oz and it felt like I walked into oz when I was a kid.
Gavin doing Dorothy/Judy Garland Drag? Ok now we have reached the Top Tier of Performance Artistry. One of the all time talented and amazing gay icons.
10:50 fun fact! The musical is based on the book Wicked by Gregory Maguire. There are four books in the series; Wicked, Son of a Witch, A Lion among Men, and Out of Oz. Maguire takes a lot of small details from the Oz books and weaves them into his series. Even the wicked witch of the west name, Elphaba, comes from the Oz author's initials L.F.B. Maguire also has a Cinderella retelling but from the POV of the stepsister.
I started the first book after having already heard the musical and it was not what I expected! I also didn't finish it because it was too depressing for my taste.
It’s so frustrating for me that these books were so incredibly popular at one point in time, yet only a small handful of movies have been made from any books after the first one. There is SO much great material there! I’m a very visual learner, so I’m not above loving the movies equal to or more than the book, and it always adds to my enjoyment to actually be able to physically see the scene, characters, etc.
The copyright on Baum's Oz books has expired now so movie companies could make movies of them if they wanted to. But, back in1954, Disney bought the movie rights to the rest of Baum's Oz books after the first one. They started production on a movie called The Rainbow Road to Oz but it was never released.
I think the problem is until fairly recently, the special effects would have been prohibitively expensive. And, the stories are probably often outdated. I read all of the first 40 books(other authors took over after Baum died) as a child, and a few of ones written even later as an adult. It's been decades since I read any though...
I listen to audiobooks while I am sewing. The Oz Books are part of my rotation. Already listened to all 14 books 3 or 4 times. I liked the first book better than the movie.
omg I spit out my drink when you asked glinda why she asked if you were a good witch or bad witch if bad witches are ugly. this is perfection! The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is always my first read of the year so I know I start with a five star.
And the Oscar goes to…Gav & Tobu🤩 Your intro had me in tears laughing, and the thorough content is really quite impressive. I enjoy your channel so much ♥️.
So, the movie was my favorite. I’m 60 now, and I never knew there were books outside of the 64 page book my mother would read me - Fast forward to the age of 40? I believe, and my husband had gotten me the 50th Anniversary of the Wizard of Oz. I was consuming every page and kept coming across a guy with the same last name as my grandpa, Raabe. Please take this next part in - every year for 3 hours (with commercials) my family, including my mother and father would watch The Wizard of Oz. It was the only time my parents were together, and no one fought. Back to age forty… My mother walks through my door and I say - Mom there is this guy in here who has the same last name as Grandpa. Meinhart Raabe… My mother nonchalantly says… Oh, that’s just your cousin Meinhart!! My mouth fell open! I’m thinking this would have been a super cool thing to know growing up! I called my aunt Jane who used to play on Meinhart’s farm in Juneo Wisconsin, and I found him in Florida, at Penny Farms, his wife had recently passed, and he was just the most delightful man. When my grandfather, C.C. Raabe passed away, I knew I would never get a hand written letter from him ever again… Fast forward to 2018, and I’m driving cross country and see the signs to the Wizard of Oz Museum. I tell the curator who I am and she takes me on a special tour and tells me delightful stories, when there in glass cases is Meinhart’s signature… my heart broke, because it was exactly like Grandpa’s. Anyway, it’s a sweet story, and my children and grandchildren know - it’s a huge cool factor! Have a blessed day!
I love that you read these!! I’m shocked you hadn’t read the entire series before with it being your fav movie. I read them all as a kid and LOVED THEM! The Patchwork Girl of Oz was always my fav. I’m writing this at the beginning of your video but can’t wait for your thoughts. Omg your cosplay. I’m dying 😂😂
Fun fact, there was a Russian version of the Wizard of Oz called the Wizard of the Emerald City. My mom loved those books. It's also a whole series, I think the other books are more original, but not sure.
The Dorothy/Glenda opening Gav! You're really out here killing it. I really enjoyed this deep dive into the Wizard of Oz. It was never a favorite of mine but it still makes me nostalgic for when I was young. I doooo love Wicked though. If you haven't already, you should look into The Search for WondLa series by Tony DiTerlizzi. It's a mid-grade fantasy/Sci-fi where a young girl goes on a search for other humans, something she's only ever seen in a picture that she calls WandLa but it's actually the cover of the original Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It's got a lot of similar themes of discovering new worlds and wanting to find your home and I really loved it =)
I love watching your videos! The skit at the beginning was SUPERB! I've always wanted to read this series and you're definitely making me want to add this series to my already long reading list:) Thanks for all that you do
This was such a throwback to my childhood! I read the series when I was younger and remember loving the world even when the characters were a bit questionable. You embodied Dorothy even better than she deserved…
There is a recent TV series that got cancelled but I really enjoyed it! It was called "Emerald City". It was a modern day version of The Wizard of Oz, but it has a lot of things in it that I now know are from the other books you've mentioned above. I didn't realise there were so many books, but things like the heads and the vegetable people etc makes so much more sense now :)
Yes Toto talking really bothered me at the time and now I realized why. They were doing a "retcon" to explain the plot hole of why we can talk and Bellina can. I know realize that this prepared me for later in life when Star Wars, and now many other series, used prequels to retcon a bunch of things about franchises. It is the most memorable part of the book.
As a Kansan (who does want to move), I have such a love/hate relationship with these books/movie. However, your acting? Iconic. Incredible. The best thing I have ever seen in my life. You make me actually love the movie.
The OZ series is like the Harry Potter series of the early 20th century. I can just imagine children 110 years ago excited about hearing a new OZ book was comming out.
This is great, i have a couple of early editions from the OZ series (not first editions) but the books are over 100 years old and have 12 color plate illustrations. Beautiful artwork.
Gavin that skit was hilarious 😂 Oscar worth acting and production 💯💯💯 this might be more difficult to do but a manga skit for one of your feature length manga vids would be hilarious too! I think you’d kill it (but ofc only if you want to)
In your opening credits you give a tribute to your pet they died in 2020 that must have been rough. To have them pass then the pandemic. My friend lost her dog around that time. He is indeed over the rainbow. Happy you are here making great videos
Wizard of Oz is one of my favourite oldie films too. I read some of the books years ago, watching to find out which ones it was. Watching the bit about ozma of oz now, when you said you couldny remember the princesses name causr it was long one, my brain... princess consweila banana hammock. Cause obviously L. Frank Baum co-wrote the final friends series!
I remember watching the movie by myself and I just loved it, being the gay child that I was (and am). They showed it in school and other people weren’t getting it. I was really sad for them.
The Wizard of Oz actually has a lot of political allusions. The Yellow brick road referred to the gold standard. The three (lion, Scarecrow, Tina Man) were all supposed to be certain politicians (can't remember who, though)
This is mostly stuff academics read into the book later. Baum himself wrote: "Modern education includes morality; therefore the modern child seeks only entertainment in its wonder-tales and gladly dispenses with all disagreeable incident. Having this thought in mind, the story of 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' was written solely to pleasure children of today." The only political allusion Baum seems to have intentionally put in the books were some female-empowerment themes due to his involvement in the suffrage movement.
Would you consider doing a Cosmere reading vlog series? Since you have talked about getting more into adult fantasy I would love to see you explore the different series within the Cosmere and hopefully loving them!
I read all of these too and then kept on going with the Ruth Plumly Thompson ones, but I've finally reached a point at which I can't track down the next ones :(
You MUST read the wicked series. The section with the tin man’s ax is seen in the first book when Elphaba visits Nessarose after many years of not seeing her! Similar to the musical in a way but features that call back to the original books.
I never knew there were this many. Not counting movies I know the series best by its cartoon that covers about 3 or 4 seasons and goes to the desert and every which way on top of movie 1 events. Now I see the cartoon could not cover everything despite its length as I thought it might have done before. 14 is quite a long series by my reconning.
If you want to see a fantastic adaption of book 2. I recommend 1981s "Marvelous Land Of Oz" Musical by the minneapolis childrens theater you can find it here on youtube free.
I loved the intro with Ash and Tobu so much❤ and is it me or did you do something similair years ago with dear Oscar? I started reading The first Wizard of Oz book and I really like it. I already adore the movie but I never read it before.
The bleeping took me out! Your skits are unmatched. I loved the first book as a kid and didn't know it was a series until a few years ago. After this review I do want to get to Ozma of Oz at least.
talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, shit on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it.
Tin Man and General Grievous display striking parallels in their origins: Both were stripped of their natural selves by the influence of others, their body parts replaced with mechanical ones, transforming them into machines. While one seeks a heart, the other is driven by a thirst for revenge. 🤖
PLEASE do an episode on the Ruth Plumly Thompson Oz books. My partner got me an old copy of The Gnome King of Oz and I absolutely love it and I really want to know more about her other books but my ADHD makes reading quite difficult for me and I fear I’ll never read them on my own.
Wow, only ever heard of the Gregpry Maguire side series (would love to see a youtube video done on that series, hint, beg). Have to go look for this one too! This comment section always has the best info ☺️
I read the wizard of oz series that part with Santa i thought i was reading it wrong

Oh that's so awesome, thanks for sharing!
Gavin doing Dorothy/Judy Garland Drag? Ok now we have reached the Top Tier of Performance Artistry. One of the all time talented and amazing gay icons.
GAVIN THIS SKIT OMG I’M DYING.
“The munchkins are very impressionable”
“BEEP BEEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP”
LOLLOLLOOLL
The opening credits if you wanna call it that was just...the best. Love it. ❤
Had to get that true Wizard of Oz feel
We’re off to see the gavin, the wonderful Gavin of books
That opening scene was Oscar worthy! Pure effing genius.

Gavin, you have outdone yourself this time! I'm crying from laughter. Also, Ash-Toto is Brilliant.
Gavin, I am SCREAMING at the “munchkins are impressionable” part!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣💀 this is amazing!!!
The Dorothy outfit, the commitment, the beauty of it all 👌❤Perfection
Oh wait sorry not Dorothy outfit, Dorothy herself!
Is he...you know....A friend of Dorothy?
👀
😏☺️

There’s something so magical about hearing Dorothy curse 😂
And the Oscar goes to…Gav & Tobu🤩
Your intro had me in tears laughing, and the thorough content is really quite impressive. I enjoy your channel so much ♥️.
3:37 YASSSSSSSSSSSS THE COSTUME IS LOVELY ❤
One of my favorite parts about this video is the fact that you get to order Wizard of Oz costumes and write them off on your taxes.
The costumes, the acting, this was superb. Amazing production value, 10 out of 10.
Wicked the musical is actually based on a book series by Gregory McGuire. He has written several fairy tales/classic story retellings.

the “wtf was that?” at the beginning 😂
I’ve read them all in junior high. Surprisingly pretty heavy sometimes. Loved it. A true fantasy. Love the takes on have. FUNNY.
The costume😱

Yes! That one is really nicely done and very underrated!
I loved the intro with Ash and Tobu so much❤ and is it me or did you do something similair years ago with dear Oscar?
I started reading The first Wizard of Oz book and I really like it. I already adore the movie but I never read it before.
The public library in my hometown had all of the Oz books so I read the whole series as a child.
omg i read these in early middle school (not all unfortunately) and our library had the best covers
Gavins dedication is 👌
The bleeping took me out! Your skits are unmatched.
I loved the first book as a kid and didn't know it was a series until a few years ago. After this review I do want to get to Ozma of Oz at least.
5:03 Oh dont worry they arent cussing they're all just talking in morse code!
😂😂😂😂😂
I watch you all the time! How did I miss this 😂😂😂
Can't wait for your speech at the Oscars next year!
talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, shit on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it.
Omg I've been waiting for this!!! I love the wizard of oz series
The green screen edits are ICONIC 🤩🤣🤣🤣
Lmfao I just died when you reinacted that wizard of oz scene xD
Tin Man and General Grievous display striking parallels in their origins: Both were stripped of their natural selves by the influence of others, their body parts replaced with mechanical ones, transforming them into machines. While one seeks a heart, the other is driven by a thirst for revenge. 🤖
I love this video idea
Thank you 🙏🏼
Omg the greenscreen in this is amazing!
This was definitely one of your best performances, the swearing 😅
If you love the 1939 Wizard of Oz. You need to watch the animated series. It's more accurate with the books.
Lovely and entertaining video as always!
This is the best video yet! I love when you dress up and act ♥️♥️♥️
Loving your rebrand, Gavin! 😍
Gavin, you know the musical Wicked is based on a book right? 😂
The cats were stars in the vid haha how dare they be so mean to cats in the books 😻
Yesssss let's get this started as I enjoy my breakfast
PLEASE do an episode on the Ruth Plumly Thompson Oz books. My partner got me an old copy of The Gnome King of Oz and I absolutely love it and I really want to know more about her other books but my ADHD makes reading quite difficult for me and I fear I’ll never read them on my own.
Wow, only ever heard of the Gregpry Maguire side series (would love to see a youtube video done on that series, hint, beg). Have to go look for this one too! This comment section always has the best info ☺️
🥲 Gavin is a treasure
I have a Wizard of Oz Christmas tree. My family goes to the Oz festival in Ohio and we love it!!
Girl, you ate this
I was waiting for this!
slayed the slayest slay
I demand a whole Oz movie by Gavin.
Now you got me wondering if Frank L Baum invented TikTok…
I read the wizard of oz series that part with Santa i thought i was reading it wrong
I think the Wizard of Oz books might make good bedtime stories. They're very repetitive in a sort of comforting way, and they probably aren't exciting enough to keep a kid awake out of anticipation
someone get this man an oscar
Now read the rest of the 40 plus written by Ruth Plumly Thompson and others.
It would be so fun for you to tackle Gregory Maguire's Wicked series that the musical is based on!
I have read all 14 books, I have lived 63 years a true fan of the original Oz stories
I haven't read the Wizard of Oz books I have only seen the movie, but I do have the first 3 in a 3-in-1 bind-up volume which I have been meaning to read for some time. I have however read (and seen) 'Wicked', although I'm kinda at the point that I need to reread that.
With this video though via the later books I can almost see where 'Wicked' got it's themes of marginalisation and propaganda comes from.
5 minutes in, this is Literally The Wizard of Oz ripped from the dvd
Only in the beginning, but that first part is soo good lol
