    I already own the drill so it makes sense to buy the flare bit kit. Thanks for the inside scoop Nick, glad to see VCG crew supporting new trades people too. Nice job thinking outside the box on this video!

    these came out 2 years ago..i saw a demo in the supply house...the salesman was not using a vise...just his hands...he said it was designed to use with one hand holding copper and one on the drill...in the field its very rare you will have a vise to hold it down...you could use a flaring block for stability...this also comes in a swaging bits ....i never bought these bits...im old school and like to use my flaring block even though i dont like flare connections...i prefer sweat connections...i have the hilmor quick engage flare & swage tool kit....thanks for showing us Nick 👍

      Thats because its not used or designed on hard copper. The supply house was using soft copper, and when used the right way it works amazing

    It's an ingenuous idea. If I had not just ordered a $92 flare kit, I probably would have ordered it. Oh well, thanks for showing it to us. Makes me wonder how many other things we've done the same way for years, decades, or even centuries , just because they worked, without thinking of easier, faster, or cheaper ways.

    I have a set just like these but I use them for swaging bells and I’m assuming that’s some really hard copper u were flaring bc my 18v Milwaukee drill usually creates a 7/8s bell in less than 10 sec. what’s even CRAZIER is that my M12 IMPACT does almost as well as the 18v drill driver

      Don't buy Hilmar...great design poor quality materials...bought 2 Hilmar products and both broke...tools are cast aluminum...junk...you can only use soft metals with these tools or they'll break immediately...and if used properly with brand new soft metals it'll take a few more times before it breaks 😂😒

    Flare fittings are the first fittings to leak. I've cut out so many over the years and replaced them with braze fittings.

    • @FlyEaglesFly19111
      @FlyEaglesFly19111 5 лет назад

      And I am curious.. was there trash in the pipe when you were done? Left over shards? Cause if so then another reason to not use it. Cause if any flare is vertical then the by product will be falling in the pipe

    • @williamburling3229
      @williamburling3229 4 года назад

      why do you believe the fitting leaks? do you think the leak actually starts with imperfections in either the fitting or the flare in the copper? gradually the leak opens up until the leak can not be tolerated?

    Looks like it works good but having to put that much pressure on an existing lineset will cause other problems. The old style puts no lateral pressure on the lineset. It’s the same reason I use auto wirestrippers so I don’t have to pull on the wire to strip it.

      You have to hold the line using gloves. As long as you use an 18v drill it swages in 2 sec. Been using this for a few years. The flare kit works just the same as the swage kit.

    Question on the F-Spin ? It looks like there is a chase that with the drill not precisely lined up with the pipe that the pipe could flare it self at an angle. Where with the hand flaring vise, it is always on target and almost no room for a miss flared pipe. This is the first time I have seen the F-Spin and to looks like a great idea. My though is lock the pipe in a pipe vise and use a drill press with the F-Spin. My idea maybe a bit of an over kill,. But with a drill press it alienates the human factor of wobbling or angels. What say you Nick and the VCG ?

    • @VCGConstruction
      @VCGConstruction  5 лет назад +2

      This tool is actually meant to be used while holding the pipe in your hand! I think what you said makes sense though

    • @MicahFunk
      @MicahFunk 4 месяца назад

      Hard to take a drill press on a roof to flare a fitting.

  • @sonnyschade1299
    @sonnyschade1299 5 лет назад

    I don't know Nick, easier or faster? Possibly... But you can't double flare with it like you can with the traditional tooling for brake and fuel lines. Plus I would think that heating up the metal end may make it brittle? Possibly some one with metallurgic background could tell the VCG for sure.

    • @VCGConstruction
      @VCGConstruction  5 лет назад

      Spin says that heating up the pipe actually makes it less brittle and less likely to crack

    • @wolfman1549
      @wolfman1549 5 лет назад +3

      It’s for Hvac not brake or fuel lines

    • @sonnyschade1299
      @sonnyschade1299 5 лет назад

      We all end up using the same tools regardless of the trade your in or what you're using the tool for. I guess there's always a trade off for speed or quality. I have a hard time believing that flaring a pipe by beating it with a paddle bit into shape is a good idea. Maybe I'm just old. I guess time will tell, if they cause leaky joints.

    • @wolfman1549
      @wolfman1549 5 лет назад

      Sonny Schade no. the angle of the flare is different. This tool is for ac line sets. Not for car brakes or fuel lines. Not the same tools

    • @sonnyschade1299
      @sonnyschade1299 5 лет назад

      I know it's not for fuel or brake lines because it's not a double flare. My original post bringing up double flare was just to point out that the hand tool he has can do more then these bits and I believe , do it better. But thanks for your input.

    As an HVAC tech and from what Ive seen in the field. HVAC school is a waste of money. Just study on your own time for the EPA certification. Thats the only thing that matters when trying to get an HVAC job. Are you EPA certified? Can you pass a drug test? Are the only questions that really matter. Granted I live in Texas....but Ive had guys training for almost a year with me. Yeah we get guys from HVAC school. They can do a heat load calculation but cant wire a thermostat. Watch youtube lol. Figure out the difference between a piston and a txv. Learn how a txv works. When you charge by superheat...not much longer and when to charge by subcool. And OMG either wrap the lines with wet paper towel for disconnect the txv before welding. Ive told you a thousand times installers...lol Most new guys are put on easy tune ups anyways. Learn the rest in the field. If you have questions hmu. Anyways dont flare....use a couple. Especially if you are going from 22 to 410 on an old house. Use strong copper not weak stretched copper. If you are doing residential 3/8 3/4 7/8 is all youll in standard systems not mini splits. 1/2 if you have to replace a compressor. I put in my own minisplit are the worst lol

    Your demonstration with the old style flaring tool is a poor comparison. That tool is used for low pressure system's such as water lines, etc. The correct tool uses a wobble flare tip and has a pressure release stopper, to not thin out the flare.

      @@Gottextrastuff Agreed. Although this needs a Revist with S-spin with full test Vs manual (Flaring tool) But the cool down time may keep you from touching the pipe for longer than you think. Hence that Damp rag. 😃 or maybe with with a temperature gun to see how long it takes to cool down, or how many you can do until the First one becomes touchable..✌
