The Dialect of Moomin | The Finno-Swedish Identity of an Icon

  • Despite their international reach, there is a certain lingual flair to the Moomins and their world that is always lost in translation. Because of the way the books were initially written and what people enacted those stories, the Moomins quickly established a strong Finno-swedish identity in their mother-tongue, but never really anywhere else.
    A very special thanks to:

Thank you very much for this comprehensive video of the history of the language in the Moomins! I'm a Finn myself and grew up with the 90's Moomins, and I always found it "weird" that the Swedish dub of the series was in Finno-Swedish (cos surely Swedes would wanna have their dubbed content in "proper" Swedish, right? :'3) I always figured the people is charge of the dubs were lazy :P (my thought process being that since Finland's official languages are both Finnish and Swedish, and people have the constitutional right to have services in their mother tongue, it would be logical to have two dubs, one for the Finnish kids and the other for the Finno-Swedish kids, and they just distributed the Finno-Swedish dub in Sweden too, cos "why bother making two separate dubs in the same language?") But thanks to your video, it all makes perfect sense now, and I'm really happy I stumbled upon it (even if it is 2 years after the publishing of the vid :'3)
One other subject your vid also touches that has been bothering me a lot, is the image of Finno-Swedish being a "lesser" form of Swedish, even amongst us Finns ourselves. Cos during my many years spent in mandatory Swedish for the Finnish classes at school, there'd always (AL.WAYS.) be that one kid who'd be all smug and declare "I don't want to speak Finno-Swedish, I want to speak REAL Swedish". Okay yeah I get that we Finns like to dwell in our sense of backwardness and misery and stupidity, but c'mon fellow Finns, not everything we touch is automatically "gringe" and "foul" and "fake". Swedish is vast, it can handle a lil dialect and geocultural spin :D Anyway, rant over.
Thank you again for the video, it helped me understand the history of the Moomins better, and gave me a lot to think about :3

Then I started thinking, when watching 90's cartoon (or anime, whatever you prefer) in Finno-Swedish as a kid (those few times I was channel browsing), it didn't feel weird at all.
    DRAGON BALLもJourney to the Westに、GHIBLIのCastle in the SkyもGulliver's Travelsに、The Genie Family(ハクション大魔王)はArabian Nightsに、Lupin the Third(ルパン三世)はArsène Lupinに着想を得ていますが、それぞれ原作とはかけ離れたアニメです。原作からの大きな拡張を認めなければ、MOOMIN人気は世代交代とともに衰退するでしょう。

I had no idea about its origins, and I really don't know how the accents could be adaptated. I don't think in my country people woud identify an accent as Finnish, and I happened to watch it in a co-official language that's not spoken by the majority of the people in my country, adding to the difficulty of changing accents to something that would somehow sound Finnish... I really wonder how it could be done.

@@tonikerminen6883 Nevermind. We could've said Nordics instead. We just like including Finland because we're cool and inclusive like that, lol.

@@Transparencyboo Sure! I get that :D But I think the "Nordic" idea is still better, personally. For a lot of people from outside the Nordic countries, like my girlfriend who's from China, making the distinction between the concepts of Nordic countries and Scandinavian countries can help to showcase that even though the Nordic countries are very similar from the perspective of someone from a place such as China, there are still some key historical, linguistic, and some cultural differences.
Either way, thanks for the response!

@@tonikerminen6883 If we made it today, we'd probably do it differently in more than one way. Chances are we wouldn't even have made it today, haha. It is a pretty old one after all. When you create videos for a few years many of them just get to fester in the depths of your catalogue with errors and ideas that you just wish you could change, but in the end you just can't. It's an interesting (and somewhat frustrating) relationship. Anyway, thanks for your comment!
