Very good comparison Walt, I have that 2012 Jred 2166 with a full wrap handle bar and a 24" bar and chain (Oregon LGX). Being a McCulloch fan and many more of them available over the years around here compared to Husqvarna and Jonsered, I am surprised at how heavy the 2166 is compared to a McCulloch Super Pro 81 is even with a 28" bar on it!
I am looking forward to your videos on the PPE equipment. I have an Echo brand helmet with the built on earmuffs and I must say that it makes things quiet!
cyclops is similar to what im building now. 2003 jonsered 2171 with 52mm euro bore kit no base gasket muffler mod. need to look how to advance the timing though. probably can find it on youtube somewhere lol. thanks for the comparison.

used to have a 181xp which is about the same as your 281xp badass saws wish I would of never sold it but I love my 371xp that replaced it but like you said you can't replace displacement so my goto saws are my 394xp and my 395xp for big stuff but most of the time I use my 350 husky love that saw was the first saw I ever bought brand new in 2002 never ever had a problem with it other than the muffler bolts coming loose but i caught it soon as it happened still has 180 psi of compression and I use it alot have always ran Husqvarna synthetic oil and ultra 93 in all my saws
i have a problem whith my saw 2172 jonsered every time i run it its like a party my frends get frustated because i go home first and whit more firewood and logs
joaquim Paixao lol yeah upstate New York here we do tree work up here in timber country selling firewood and residential tree removal. We climb me and my buddy. I love the jonsered 2172. We got a 32” bar in you should see the chips she makes. Ground off rakers looks like long strings of wood. Everyone talks bad about jonsered. We have stihl a 015 & 048 both been overhauled. Use em a lot. The jon shredder is badass.
All great saws and fun to find each ones sweet spot. However my issue is with the 372 x torq. I do know where and how to adjust the oiler and what it means. What happens is I run out of bar oil long before gas thus heating up the clutch side main bearing area. Main bearing issues on that side.
afleetcommand yep. done all the tricks. I learned the hard way to quit earlier. the reality is my x torq in 4 tanks of gas has the same wood pile as my other 3 372s. way more fuel efficient. when i say wood piles I mean pulp and logs.
2 more weeks I'm fixing to lay down $859 for a 372xp with 20" bar at my local farm supply,,i cant wait the excitement is killing me-like a kid at Christmas, lol
I Recently had the 372xp for a week- uptraded to 395xp (under the one week no questions asked warranty husqy offers)- it was a hard choice to make between the stihl 661 with shifty air monitoring system for a alaskan mill i am setting up(why i chose the 395xp) and the husqy 395xp (both saws 93cc+) the local(stihl) shop said they would not warranty the Stihl 661 for that application (if i wanted to use the saw for that they would;d sell me the saw but not warranty it....... we are western lower Michigan (Maple Oak Beech Locust) coastal areas, the wood is hard and plentiful and the woods are miserable to work in come june july so the last thing i need is a saw that is breaking down on me at the mill or in the bush with waranty issues so it is great to see these videos that bring peace of mind after spending 1300$ on a new saw- i will get a hutzl to mess with at some point just because we can and they are inexpensive to play with. thanks again Walt aloha td- krustysurfer
I have a CS 2165. I am looking to purchase a ripping chain for this saw. Jonsered, do you sell a ripping chain that will fit this Saw or can you refer me an aftermarket company that is reliable that I could contact.
Yes, more like the 371's. But essentially the early version of a 372 chassis. Actually like them better than the "X-torq" varients. (2172 and 372's after 2010)
Thanks for videos and the info, especially the ones with you and the shop owner (can't remember his name)I'm trying to decide which larger saw to get. I only need one and I've been reading, watching etc. I live in California right outside Sequoia National Forest, the trees have all been fell due to disease and drought but they are 28" and larger, my saw will not pull big enough bar, basically I'm cutting for firewood. My local Shop has Stihl and Husky I've handled them all and like the ergos of husky so now just trying to decide which to get 372,576,390??to get through the bigger trees and that will last.Sounds like it's worth paying the extra $50 and get the 576? 390 I think is bigger than needed. Any suggestions on saw? Bar and chain best combo?
My pick would be a 390 or 576 over any variant of the available "X-torq" 372's. I like "built" X-torqs I guess, but not as they are "out of the box" as much as the 576's. A younger me would go for the 390 every time. Older me...a 576 Autotune. As far as Bar& chain....Sugihara's if price is no object and your don't mind them being a little more flexible. Other than that the Husqvarna Brand is essentially an Oregon so take your pick. Totals are no more as Tilton went out of business end of last year. The Tsumara bar they were derived from is pretty good. Heard folks complain about tip life when bore cutting in the winter out here....all frozen hard wood. Thats hard on any bar. The Stihl tips hold up better but those bars are all Stihl mount..you can adapt them BTW, and heavier. SO depends on your priority. Cost no object? A Sugihara, then the rest depends of how much you want a lighter saw.
good videos buddy! nice to see a comparison between them saws.Have you looked at Decking the X-torq Cylinder, Ive Just done one as im starting out and it runs real strong.
I've done a couple with popup's and changing the exhaust & transfers. But that's moving away from the simple mods and simple tool theme I TRY to stick to... SO also did one starting with a "Huztl" AM cylinder, After the cut I also moved the exhaust to 100 degrees ATC and the intake to 75 degrees BTDC, blow down at 22 degrees, numbers that others have established as a good starting point... Runs strong, just haven't had time to work with it, then had to rob parts off the saw for another "project" so there it sits, now just the bottom end & cylinder.. :)
@@Sensei948 That's a little low for my liking but is totally servable and will run. Usually they are in the 150 psi range stock. And with a gasket delete jump to the 160 plus range.
very nice.did my first farmer jones build on a husqvarna 55 rancher no base gasket (1184) pipe muffler mod.WOW what a difference. thanks for the videos!!
brad ruch Did it wake it up that much? I rebuilt my 55 last week with no base gasket, it was a dead saw so had nothing to compare it to and in Canada its hard to get parts. Took me 2 weeks to get a new choke lever. Couldn't get a muffler gasket so made one out of a coke can.
Geoff Clark I ran without the mods. after the mods little louder but way more torque. i didnt close the oem opening on the muffler yet just added a 5/8 pipe in the corner.and removed the spark arrestor.
brad ruch Nice! I'm thinking of muffler modding it too. I bought it 2 weeks ago for $75 off a local chainsaw rebuilder. I thought it was kinda junk, just wanting a limmer saw but the damn thing has 145psi compression yet. Ran it a bit yesterday. Pretty happy how it turned out so far.
Geoff Clark should have thrown a new piston and ring in for how cheap they are.mine started with 150psi havent checked it now.but by feel i would say 160 165.
shows you how powerful the 281/288 platform can be need an 8 tooth to be on par with an old saw albeit that they are heavy but the powerband is unmatched.
afleetcommand that's what I was thinking the bb kit that I received for my 372 build has burrs on the intake side going into the cylinder I was thinking like you mentioned in the original 660 build in smoothing up that transfer. I hadn't seen any hardware kits for the 372 did you just go to the dealer to order the screws you didn't have....or try to match them up at the hardware store?
The Husqvarna's I've built usually started out as dead saws...and I've broken down many and have a pile of parts and hardware for them. On things like case bolts and cylinder bolt/screws, go to the dealer and pay the price. On the rest you can match up with generic stuff.
afleetcommand I love my 288. It's not been touched in the 25ish years I've had it. I got it after it had a tree laid on it. I still run it almost daily. Great test by the way
Did your 281 turn out to be stock bore or was it upgraded to54 mm 288 specs.?also what's the difference in weight vs. the 576/372 chassis? You don't seem to get very excited about the 281/288? is it because it's an out of date chassis or something else? I love my 288 and that's coming from a Dolmar Junkie!! also if you ever had one to many of those metal handled brake covers I would probably pay to much for it keep me in mind... Next time you are in Lake of the Ozarks let me know come south about an hour and a half and I will be glad to take you to do some of the best trout fishing you can do on the White river.
Actually love that 281...its a contender to retire the Huztl 660 56mm saw. Its an early 281 and has not been upgraded to a 288. Just have a pile of saws so I don't get as excited as I once did..:) It's proof to me that good designs are ageless actually. That trip out west was awesome BTW...:) Hoping to make a few mods to the boat, upgrade to electronic ignition and an Edelbrock dual plane manifold for the coming summer .. and thanks for the offer!
