- ...A 2-minute explanation by Jeff Maguire (and friends) of what a "missional church" is. Thanks to common craft for the inspiration, Brian Hurst for the art, and blimp pilot Cole Beshore for special effects.
So simple a child can understand this... this should be the mission for all that follow Christ. Great Job!
This is briefest, clearest and best explanation of missional church I have seen so far.
Jeff,
Love it! You pegged this one. We will be using it in our new church plant.
Thanks for the insight in such simple, easy to understand terms.
Kathy
@karakzanreal I understand your point and it's true that not all religious groups give back or serve others but charitable organizations are not all created equal either. Groups and individuals will always find ways to abuse and/or get around tax rules. It comes down to whether you believe most religious groups are honestly out for the betterment of society or exist ultimately to serve themselves or their cause. That is somewhat subjective
This video inspires me and makes me think about helping my church to become a missional church
It is great! simple, concise, and very well explained...
I like how this puts the responsibility in the hands of the people- where it should be- rather than in the hands of the "paid professional".
an excellent introduction...I mean, really good!
Very inspirational. Thank you for making this video. I hope you will allow me to download it and share it with our church for motivation and educational purposes.
Great ... and simple video!
Thanks so much for this, I really appreciate it. It's a great reminder for everyone, but especially for some of those mega churches who basically run their services like any other business ploy.
He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. Mark 16:15-16
@oregonianyahoo
Actually, you can accomplish both. I think Mars Hill Bible Church under Mark Driscoll is doing both. But I think we have relied on attractional/invitational for too long. We have failed to be missional, so we need to rediscover what that is all about.
That was really, really well done!
This is soo good. Nice and simple.
Thanks a lot :)
Great video
Okay. This. Is. Awesome.
I like it. Sounds costly, but right.
Invite the lost to Church..Many who have been members for a lifetime do not recognize the need to bring in those lost to meet the Savior.
Perfect.
Jeff (and friends). Great video. I hope you don't mind if I show this in church. This is very easy to understand and is right on the mark.
To MarkG45 and 99minerkc: I wish you both the best.
I love the video and I totally get the missional mindset....however I believe a church can be "attractional" and "missional" at the same time. You don't have to sacrifice one for the other....so you I guess you could say "Attrissional" ;-) Love the video!
cool!
Good simple illustrations of missional church.Sunday27-3-2011.
Hi Jeff, can you send the video file to me to use in Church. I can't use the RUclips version as church does not have internet. Thanks
I find this interesting. What is presented in this video is the 500 year old Lutheran teaching of Vocation :-)
Jeff, I would like to use this video file as well. Does it come in his res?
I love this video and would love to use the video with an adapted voicetrack for my own little congregation. How and where can I get permission from jeffmagu. I don't see an email?
Mark:
I'm so sorry this came across that way. This is intended to explain how Christians ought to live out the best of the church wherever they are -- compassion, justice, love, Jesus. This is not advocating the random accosting of strangers in order that they might be told a story. In fact, though it may not have been clear enough, it's quite the opposite. The whole concept is predicated on pre-existing friendship relationships where faith and life already naturally intersect.
One questions . . . the video says that this (Every believer embodies the church . . . ) is what the people (all-inclusive) do. Would that it were true! Lots of training and encouragement is needed to get to this point.
Sounds good when explained from one side. I've seen this implemented 3 times in Ohio and ouch! Good people get devastated in favor of a cult like experience. In the end you have a lot of hurt people and your friends who might have a tendency for a cult found a home.
This would be a good "program" if it wasn't a program, included love and compassion as part of it, and wasn't so arrogant about anything that wasn't 3dm.
My wife called it evil. I wasn't inclined to agree but after having seen so much bad fruit come from it I'm not sure what else yo can call it.
If it were a good thing then it would have to be sprung on church congregations. It wouldn't need a 6 month plan to "ease" it in. You could be open and honest about it while moving into it. But you can't do this because people in tuned with the Holy Spirit have a check in their heart. So, to avoid this you must learn good marketing strategies and formulas and institute tight controls of 8, 6, 4 with high accountability and high control.
This is an evil that renders the christian impotent to follow God's will. You will do enough to feel like you are doing God's will but you'll actually be doing 3dm's will.
I am in favor of being "missional" as explained here; this is Biblical. The problem that I see is that many church leaders (they should be "Pastors" , not leaders) are confusing the mission of their "missional" church to be something other than making disciples via the preaching of the pure gospel of Jesus Christ.
I don't see why it is either/or. I've been part of Program churches in which "professional teachers" lead people to Christ....and so do the people. Book of act saw a big church environment on day one in which the "Professional teacher" a guy named Peter, brought 3000 peeps to Jesus. But if you have to have be on a pendulum....enjoy the ride to the other side. Just keep the whole Scriptures with you as you go.
@ryanellis000 Jesus specifically says in the Bible that his followers will be known by their love for others, that is: by the way they live their lives in the service of others. John 13:35, look it up.
factastic!
@ryanellis000 gotta say that I have NEVER heard "missional" defined the way you use it.
Actually, I'm not surprised any more. Generally speaking, you cannot find the pure gospel very many places. When the goal of a local church becomes one of growth (self preservation) over obedience to it's Master, the "sheep get starved" and "the goats" rush in and take control of the "barnyard". Satan can be very clever and very sublte. While he is evil, he is not stupid. Who would have thought that he would use the "visible church" to try to wipe out the "true church". Hmmm.
@karakzanreal because religious communities serve the community/city around them in real, measurable ways. Giving the religious group a tax break in turn makes it easier for the that group to give back in ways that the government can't or is ineffective and inefficient at doing
"NOT AFFILIATED WITH COMMON CRAFT"?
What is church meant to be anyway? Check out Church: What Was God Thinking? on my channel Mut Sai Seun Chaai
A humble church has no offering plate.
Why can't a church be missional and invitational? Seems like a whole lot of people came to hear Peter speak in Acts...and God used the preaching of one man to convince thousands.
Also, Jesus sent his disciples out into the world to tell others about him... when he was begining his ministry and after his ressurection. He wanted them to be missional too.
Shouldn't a church use both of these strategies if it is serious about the Gospel?
Christians don't embody the church. The church is the BODY OF CHRIST Colossians 1:24. Christians embody CHRIST. Christians do not go out into the community to show others "the church". The BODY (Christians, the Church) goes out and shows others CHRIST.
Mars Hill is a cult and its not Mars Hill Bible Church its Mars Hill Church and Acts 29. Mars Hill Bible Church was Rob Bell's church and they are not the same church.

oh man, it's so much easier to toss away flyers for churches than deal with people preaching to you at school. please leave the rest of us all. There isn't a person in America who isn't painfully aware of how fanatics love jesus. Just let us be, and stop talking about how much you love invisible sky wizards with magic powers.
That language is so overused and without gospel definition.
