Such an enjoyable relaxing video. I appreciate that you first show how to do the stitch in a straight line and then apply it to a letter. Beautiful work.
Her videos are so informative and I like how she not only shows you the straight line, but then goes over how to use it in practice - without speeding up the video. I also learned the value of the starting stitch and how the “no knotting” method works. And, I appreciate that she doesn’t edit out her mistakes and instead shows us how she corrects them. Her Palestrina stitches are so beautifully done!
This is a wonderful video! I haven't embroidered for 50 years or more and had forgotten even basic stitches. Thank you for showing, in detail, how to do the stitch and then how to use it. I would like to see the back of your finished work, as well. (I suspect that your back is as neat and precise as your front!)
I did a video all about the back of your work recently Mary, so do check that out! We have lots of videos on all the basics as well, including how to start and finish threads, how to use a hoop, backing fabric...all sorts!
Very inspiring. Best stitching tutorial I've ever seen. I love how you show the stitch technique first and then go on to show how to use it. Thank you.
Thank you, Sarah, that was nicely detailed and easy to follow. I'm just beginning, and I'm glad to have found you early on - I feel like I've gotten a running start! One comment on the overall video, which was excellent overall...I notice that in many, many tutorials, across all kinds of craft, the artist never shows the entire final product. I wish you had showed us the full array of embroidered letters at the end of the demo, to get an idea of how each style contrasts with each other, as in a sampler. I was looking forward, after following through all the intricate work, to seeing a final product - closure, if you will! And a useful tool for selecting and designing.
Fantastic tutorial! I wanted to embroider my little granddaughter's name (its quite long LOL!) on a quilted pump bag for her first day at school this September. I loved the palestrina stitch as soon as I saw it and started straight away. I found it very easy following your detailed instructions. It's looking beautiful in the variegated thread as you suggest. I'm sure my daughter and her little girl will love it. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. Your teaching style is very relaxed but also precise.
Thank you for the refresher course. I am 55 and I used to embroider with my great-grandmother as a child. I loved it, and I loved the time with her. I am a grandmother now and want to embroider my granddaughters name on everything. When she is older I hope to teach her. I will have to practice till then. I am starting off with pillow cases with their names for Christmas. I have never seen that last stitch before it's very pretty. Thank you.
Thank you for all your wonderful tutorial videos Sarah. The Palestrina stitch has always intimidated me. I watched this video again, took a deep breath and worked a few samples (as you recommend in another video) and I manged to master the stitch - well, sewed it well enough to add to the embroidery I'm working on at the moment anyway. I was so pleased with myself that I bragged to my husband, who knows what's good for himself, and he complimented my neat stitches. 😀
When I was a kid growing up in the fifties I was sent every Saturday afternoon to the house of an elderly lady to learn embroidery. Whenever I fly anywhere now, I get one of those little embroidery kits to keep my fingers and mind busy during the flight - for some reason, I’ve realised that a needle is one thing security doesn’t mind you taking on board! Now I can practice some letters as well :-)) Thanks for posting!
Really fun to watch, will try that gorgeous Palestrina stitch - thank you! This is the first of your videos I've seen, currently doing a lot of knitting, I'll have to take a break and try some embroidery!
Job well done! I really appreciate the way your explanations are precise and consistent. Thank you for an excellent video that makes me want to practice and learn more beautiful stitches!!!
seems I'll stick to stem stitch for my little project... but great to see alternatives, they'll come in handy when the letters are bigger. My first try at outlining a shape was flat stitching from left to right, like in some machine embroidery. This is way easier...
Very nicely done. Would love to see more advanced embroidery stitches and techniques. So many people upload the same basics. It was good to learn the Palestrina stitch
We've had alot of embroidery beginners recently so we are trying to give something for everyone! We have some more complicated stitches coming for those that need a bit of a challenge!
Thank you for this tutorial, It's so well explained and demonstrated! I was recently inspired to add hand embroidered writing to my designs. Your work is beautiful!
I used to do embroidery as a small child, tray clothes, chair backs, hankies etc. but I'm thinking of taking it up again as an lady in my late 60'sso your videos are really awesome for me to 'relearn' this lovely stitchwork.
I'm really looking forward to this 5lettering stitches. I'm planning on making handkerchiefs for my grand daughters. I think they believe hankerchiefs come of of a box ans are made of paper. Can't wait to tell them you don't use them once and throw them away. You wash and reuse them! I was trying to think of a way of combining their first initial with one of your patterns for small floral motifs. Using their favorite colors and flowers. I'd probaby put this in a corner with a small bow to create a bow. Haven't figured out what to do with the rest of all that white space, suggestions anyone?
Well blow me down, here I am at 68 and I always thought you had to stitch the bottom thread underneath in some fashion then couch it afterward. How I laughed🥴 Thank you for this little gem 💞
you just have such a calm and gentle demeanor. It's so peaceful watching your do embroidery! Thank you, I will try embroidering my newborn niece's name on the diaper bloomer I made :)
I'm like a swan Tara, calm on the surface...:) Hope your lettering works well; I don't know what fabric that would be but if it has any stretch make sure you don't stretch it before you sew on it!
Hello Sarah! I have been watching many of your videos and my technique is getting a bit better. I have a question....are you using an away holding stitch or the eponymous holding stitch at the beginning of the video?
Thank you so much Sarah! You made it very easy to understand and I could see everything you were doing! I hope to make my letters as beautiful as you have!
That's how we were taught as it was called in my senior day capital double writing.its a shame as I taught my girls proper double writing diong the capitals like you just showed on paper.unlike what my poor grandchildren writing looks like called now joined up writing??.the idea of double or joined writing is to write a whole name without taking pen from paper only when finished to cross a T or dot and I.now I will learn from you to embroidery on initials on a bag or clothes for my grandchildren .looks better than a plain J dont you think thank you uk
I’m struggling deciding with stitching a child’s name on a piece - your woven back stitch is so much nicer than I’ve seen before - just had a quick try and it’s perfect!!!
Just picked up embroidery after a couple of years and this is incredibly helpful! I feel like you've made easy something I would otherwise find complicated. I commend your expertise and look forward to applying these techniques on my next project! :)
Great tutorial on all these beautiful stitches. I had a question about the stem stitch. As you work up the leg the loop is to the right and is inside the circle of the top part. At the top of the S where it starts to curve back down, do you still keep the loop to the right? Because it would now be outside the circle so the stitch would be going a different direction. Hopefully my question makes sense.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! I am expecting my shipment of embroidery supplies to come in this weekend. I have never done anything with embroidery and can't wait to get started. I just found your channel and subbed. I'm looking forward to learning more from your excellent instructions. Peace and blessings.
The fabric I'm using for this project is Linen twill and is available from our online shop here: www.sarahhomfray.com/myshop/prod_5747879-Jacobean-linen-Twill-Large-48cm-x-48cm.html
Wish I could add pictures because I have been avoiding embroidering lettering since I started last year but just watched your video and gave it a go! Really happy with the results :) Thanks so much! x
This is so fun! I left embroidery behind many, many years ago, but have been following The Ugly Stitch Club & now you're teaching me how to add interest to my projects! God bless you & your generosity!

I’m so happy I found your videos, I really enjoyed embroidery as a youngster, but life gets in the way, I am getting back into it and will practice these stitches. You have such a calming voice and your approach is relaxed, I appreciate these videos and the time you have put into making them, thank you
Loved this video! You made it so easy to understand each stitch and the camera showed everything perfectly. I will be trying all of these and watching many more of your embroidery tutorials. Thank you, Sarah!
I dont need to download this is how we were taught double writing in senior case .capitals it was called .practiced every week using only two lines the top of a letter was to be used in both lines smaller case letters only bottom line.it works that we end up doing my name on unlined paper in a dead straight line with your eyes closed.shame children are not taught this today.NOW IM GIONG TO PRACTICE EMBRODIERING THEM THANK YOU
Do you have any lettering not as fancy. My work is a little primitive looking since I just started embordary recently at 65. Making a crazy quilt, only the 3rd quilt I have made in my lifetime. Always been a crocheter but not a real sewing buff. Mother was an artist at embordary. I'm trying but not beating myself up or expecting perfection at thus late in life.
¡Gracias!
Thank you for your kind donation to support this video Carol!
It’s 1:43 am why is this so satisfying
Ha ha!!! I hope I'm not keeping you up Ismael!
I don't know but I am relaxed now!
Ismael, I’m a night owl too. There are several nights a week I see 1:43 AM as well. Enjoy your stitching
Because you're seeing it come alive! (It's also 1:43 am when I posted this.)
Its 2 : 26 and its still satisfying
Such an enjoyable relaxing video. I appreciate that you first show how to do the stitch in a straight line and then apply it to a letter. Beautiful work.
Thank you Eloise!
You are the Bob Ross of embroidery. So soothing & calm to watch. Love your vids!
I'll take that! 😁👍

Can not say thank you enough for this wonderful tutorial. You are a great teacher.
Thank you! Invaluable teaching... I really do appreciate your time and skills 🌸
Thank you, Sarah, that was nicely detailed and easy to follow. I'm just beginning, and I'm glad to have found you early on - I feel like I've gotten a running start!

We will take your point into account; if you follow me on social media there is often pictures of the stitching on there!

It's great to pass this skill down through the generations Dj, how wonderful to be taught by your great grandmother!
Thank you so much for taking the time to explain these stitches so clearly. I have never done this before and yet I was able to follow along easily.
Glad it was helpful Amy!

He's well trained Rosemary!! It is a beautiful stitch, well done for sticking with it x
It's an old saying, but one worth keeping: "Happy wife, happy life."
Assuming it comes from conversation and mutual compromise, of course.
Amen lol lol
Thank you. Your video is very easy to follow and is just what I was looking for to help me personalise Christmas decorations 🙂

I was actually wondering if I would be able to take this on a flight! Thank you for your insight :)
Thank that was easy to follow, I enjoyed listening to you.
Very clear instructions and video! Do you have a video of how to embroider teeny tiny letters (maybe a quarter inch)?
Thank you so much for this! Complete beginner and this video was incredibly helpful :)
Thanks for your tutorials and Happy New Year !
Thank you for the video, needed the refresher since I haven't done decorative stitching since I was a kid when my grandma taught me.
Really fun to watch, will try that gorgeous Palestrina stitch - thank you! This is the first of your videos I've seen, currently doing a lot of knitting, I'll have to take a break and try some embroidery!

You could do that Anna but it is definately the hard way of doing it!
The palestrina stitch is so pretty! Thank you for the tutorial =)

That palestrina stitch looks crazy confusing, but it's so beautiful! I would like to try it in a modern embroidery piece to add some texture
It's not too bad if you take it slowly until you get used to it! Worth the effort to learn as it's so beauitful...
Very well done, thank you so much! This is just what I needed, especially the little details to make it just right.
That was great! I’ll definitely try to use these stitches for letters!
Thank you for your video is amazing greetings from Colombia 🇨🇴 😍 😍 😍 ✨✨✨💕💕✨

I am doing a gift for a niece and wanting to add her name. What stitch do you like to use? Should I use a color from the stitched item or black?
Great camera work. Good to see different perspectives of the stitches. Much appreciated 💜💐💜

I was about to ask that very question before I clicked on comments. Pardon my absence while I go fabric shopping lol 😆
Wish I could add pictures because I have been avoiding embroidering lettering since I started last year but just watched your video and gave it a go! Really happy with the results :) Thanks so much! x
Make sure you check out our video going up later on today!
How do you do letter continuations without having multiple knots
This is so fun! I left embroidery behind many, many years ago, but have been following The Ugly Stitch Club & now you're teaching me how to add interest to my projects! God bless you & your generosity!
Sarah, You're an amazing teacher. I love the way you explain every move and your knowledge is invaluable. Thank You!!
Thank you rage108!
This is great, im having a hard time stitching letters and this video helps me a lot.
I’m interested in hand embroidering a tulle veil. Do you have any suggestions on the best type of stitch and thread to use?
That H is gorgeous!! Thank you for making these videos ❤

Wonderful that you can just write your own Jeanette!
I will definitely be practicing some of these! Thanks Sarah.
Very good tutorial video 👍
That’s amazing really neat love it 🥰
Do you have any lettering not as fancy.
Try my '12 stitches for beginners' Rebelhomeland, some of those will work for lettering
Amazing video and so useful. Thank you.
I'm new to embroidery but I love it !! I think you are lovely and thank you for sharing your videos and tips!
Thanks 😊, lovely ❤️
Thank you for sharing this. You are so lovely to listen to and your explanations / demonstrations are so clear.
Thank you so much Karen, glad you are enjoying!
