Her videos are so informative and I like how she not only shows you the straight line, but then goes over how to use it in practice - without speeding up the video. I also learned the value of the starting stitch and how the “no knotting” method works. And, I appreciate that she doesn’t edit out her mistakes and instead shows us how she corrects them. Her Palestrina stitches are so beautifully done!
Such an enjoyable relaxing video. I appreciate that you first show how to do the stitch in a straight line and then apply it to a letter. Beautiful work.
When I was a kid growing up in the fifties I was sent every Saturday afternoon to the house of an elderly lady to learn embroidery. Whenever I fly anywhere now, I get one of those little embroidery kits to keep my fingers and mind busy during the flight - for some reason, I’ve realised that a needle is one thing security doesn’t mind you taking on board! Now I can practice some letters as well :-)) Thanks for posting!
This is a wonderful video! I haven't embroidered for 50 years or more and had forgotten even basic stitches. Thank you for showing, in detail, how to do the stitch and then how to use it. I would like to see the back of your finished work, as well. (I suspect that your back is as neat and precise as your front!)
I did a video all about the back of your work recently Mary, so do check that out! We have lots of videos on all the basics as well, including how to start and finish threads, how to use a hoop, backing fabric...all sorts!
Thank you for the refresher course. I am 55 and I used to embroider with my great-grandmother as a child. I loved it, and I loved the time with her. I am a grandmother now and want to embroider my granddaughters name on everything. When she is older I hope to teach her. I will have to practice till then. I am starting off with pillow cases with their names for Christmas. I have never seen that last stitch before it's very pretty. Thank you.
I used to do embroidery as a small child, tray clothes, chair backs, hankies etc. but I'm thinking of taking it up again as an lady in my late 60'sso your videos are really awesome for me to 'relearn' this lovely stitchwork.
Thank you for all your wonderful tutorial videos Sarah. The Palestrina stitch has always intimidated me. I watched this video again, took a deep breath and worked a few samples (as you recommend in another video) and I manged to master the stitch - well, sewed it well enough to add to the embroidery I'm working on at the moment anyway. I was so pleased with myself that I bragged to my husband, who knows what's good for himself, and he complimented my neat stitches. 😀
Very inspiring. Best stitching tutorial I've ever seen. I love how you show the stitch technique first and then go on to show how to use it. Thank you.
It's the little details that so improve our stitching! I learned three things: the two little stitches after the waste knot, deciding the direction of the loop based on the curve of the letter, and the leaving a little space when stitching where the letter crosses. None of my methods left me satisfied with the result. I will put all three of your methods into place.
This is so fun! I left embroidery behind many, many years ago, but have been following The Ugly Stitch Club & now you're teaching me how to add interest to my projects! God bless you & your generosity!
Fantastic tutorial! I wanted to embroider my little granddaughter's name (its quite long LOL!) on a quilted pump bag for her first day at school this September. I loved the palestrina stitch as soon as I saw it and started straight away. I found it very easy following your detailed instructions. It's looking beautiful in the variegated thread as you suggest. I'm sure my daughter and her little girl will love it. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. Your teaching style is very relaxed but also precise.
Thank you, Sarah, that was nicely detailed and easy to follow. I'm just beginning, and I'm glad to have found you early on - I feel like I've gotten a running start! One comment on the overall video, which was excellent overall...I notice that in many, many tutorials, across all kinds of craft, the artist never shows the entire final product. I wish you had showed us the full array of embroidered letters at the end of the demo, to get an idea of how each style contrasts with each other, as in a sampler. I was looking forward, after following through all the intricate work, to seeing a final product - closure, if you will! And a useful tool for selecting and designing.
What amazing stitches! The lettering on my cat’s shirt fell apart after I put it in the wash. I decided to go with couching for part of the design. Before this, I only did cross stitch and samples. Thank you for helping with this project and I enjoy it so much that I want to do more in the future. I really appreciate it that gals like you take the time to share their talents on RUclips.
Thank you for showing the stitches and then how to do a letter. I just wanted to add a name to a bag and had no idea how to embroider, but your video makes me not afraid and confident I can do this.
I’m so happy I found your videos, I really enjoyed embroidery as a youngster, but life gets in the way, I am getting back into it and will practice these stitches. You have such a calming voice and your approach is relaxed, I appreciate these videos and the time you have put into making them, thank you
I've just found your channel!. I ADORE iT. I self taught myself to embroidery in the late 60s early 70s. I throughly enjoy watching you do the stitches "correctly". So to say. Your tips, stitches, and the way your voice is so soothing, makes your channel a joy to watch. Thank you very much for your channel! Great work!
Wish I could add pictures because I have been avoiding embroidering lettering since I started last year but just watched your video and gave it a go! Really happy with the results :) Thanks so much! x
I’m struggling deciding with stitching a child’s name on a piece - your woven back stitch is so much nicer than I’ve seen before - just had a quick try and it’s perfect!!!
I bought embroidery books about 25 years ago and never really did anything from it. But now with videos such as yours Sarah I am really getting into it. Thank you for your easy breezy no stress videos. :)
@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery Exactly, I need to see how it works rather than in a book where I tend to get all fuddled. It is not about reading its about how the words don't seem to make sense. I have watched a lot of your videos and gee I am getting it, not perfect by any means but I will keep at it.
Thank you so much Sarah! You made it very easy to understand and I could see everything you were doing! I hope to make my letters as beautiful as you have!
Very nicely done. Would love to see more advanced embroidery stitches and techniques. So many people upload the same basics. It was good to learn the Palestrina stitch
We've had alot of embroidery beginners recently so we are trying to give something for everyone! We have some more complicated stitches coming for those that need a bit of a challenge!
It is lovely to watch how basic stitches can be used for lettering. I thought that the extra step that you took to show how to do each stitch in a straight line BEFORE applying it to the selected letter is marvelous. And the letters are beautiful. Thank you so much Sarah. You are a wonderful teacher with the patience you take by doing it slowly and explaining clearly what you are doing. I do have to say that the Palestrina stitch is stunning. I have never seen that stitch. It does take time, but it is not impossible. It just takes patience. How else can you use that stitch? I can see that being used as a straight line border to edge a piece. Or using it in a fancier way by doing a flower border. What do you use it for?
Just picked up embroidery after a couple of years and this is incredibly helpful! I feel like you've made easy something I would otherwise find complicated. I commend your expertise and look forward to applying these techniques on my next project! :)
seems I'll stick to stem stitch for my little project... but great to see alternatives, they'll come in handy when the letters are bigger. My first try at outlining a shape was flat stitching from left to right, like in some machine embroidery. This is way easier...
Re-watching as want to start my Aunt Martha Sunbonnet Days iron-on transfers. Been busy learning to machine sew so now fancy starting my embroidery projects. Looking forward to starting it. Lesley x
Thank you for explanation and video of cable chain stitch. This is the most understandable explanation I have read/watched. I have been trying to learn this for months.
you just have such a calm and gentle demeanor. It's so peaceful watching your do embroidery! Thank you, I will try embroidering my newborn niece's name on the diaper bloomer I made :)
I'm like a swan Tara, calm on the surface...:) Hope your lettering works well; I don't know what fabric that would be but if it has any stretch make sure you don't stretch it before you sew on it!
Oh my Sarah your teaching technique is flawless and so easy to follow. I would like to embroider two letters onto a heart that is made of fleece. If I put a square piece of fleece onto an embroidery hoop would I need stabilizer onto the back of the fleece. Thank you for sharing your talent!😊
I didn't know about starting with the knot on the front and then working toward your starting point. What a nice finishing technique! No knot at the back of your work.
Your video is perfect for this beginner! I like how each example is packed with tips on making it look even better, like the gaps for crossovers. Thank you for the help!
I’ve been looking at lots of videos on embroidery and yours by far has been my favorite. Thank you for sharing this with us. I am just starting out and vastly enjoying it. I agree with the previous comments on getting a running start with your videos. So enjoyable and you teach well. My pricked fingers will enjoy these new stitches to practice lol.
Such a wonderful, easy -to-follow tutorial! Thank you so much for explaining everything while demonstrating, so much better for beginners than how-to videos with just a music bed.

Oh my gosh. So so helpful. I’ve gotten my threads out again and wanting to do lettering. These are so beautiful and your instructions and set up are so good. Thank you very much!
I keep coming back to your videos, Sarah. I like everything about them! Explanations, video quality, examples - everything is perfect. I am using the Palestrina stitch for the first time today and your tutorial made it so easy to learn how to do it 💜
I found you while searching for ‘how to sew a name’. Very informative video. Also, I could listen to you talk and fall asleep. Your voice is very soothing. ❤

omg!!! i cant believe it i tried embroidery for the first time ever for my dad's birthday and your video was the best choice you really make awesome videos thank you you are the best!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your work is so pretty and swift! love the color of embroidery floss you are using in the first example. If you have a moment, please specify the floss maker and color numbers for these examples.
If you do the woven backstitch and weave from the same side instead of alternating sides you get a sort of stemstitch, it looks really nice. I did some handkerchiefs with names with that, it works really well. :)
That one is great if you want to thicken up a row of stitching Anneke! It's called whipped backstitch, we have a video on it somewhere. You can also do it on running stitch and chain stitch...
@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery I liked how it made the stitches seem more continuous, like they were actually written, but it would stand up to being used and touched a lot, as it would be on a handkerchief. Couching (is that how it's called in English, now I can't remember, when you used one thread as a ribbon and stitch it down with another) has the same effect, but feels less sturdy to me.
¡Gracias!
Thank you for your kind donation to support this video Carol!
It’s 1:43 am why is this so satisfying
Ha ha!!! I hope I'm not keeping you up Ismael!
I don't know but I am relaxed now!
