    This is incredibly dangerous. Jackstands are already incredibly affordable and have many safety features that your homemade version lacks. I hope nobody else tries this

    • @elbero8509
      @elbero8509 6 лет назад

      Jake,I agree..the jack stand high risk to collapse...i hope there is heavy limit to use this stand.

    • @eliosmoonelios3152
      @eliosmoonelios3152 6 лет назад

      Many jackstands still use this principle, many security features are just to sell it for highest price.
      Do you realize some bricks are good enough to lift a car for days, weeks or months... Or years?
      Do you realize a brick is ridiculous weak compared to this jackstand?

    • @sk8erEkaJ
      @sk8erEkaJ 6 лет назад

      Highest price? you can literally buy a pair of 2-ton stands for under $15 on amazon. thats less than $7.50 per stand and unless you have this guys exact supplies lying around in your shop you can't buy the supplies and consumables to build one for that price.
      ive never seen a brick tip over due to a bad stick weld and lack of triangulation, nor collapse because of an old bolt used as a pin. all of the weight applied to this jackstand is relying on the shear strength of that bolt.
      I would honestly much rather use a thick block of wood than a homemade jackstand like this
      but go right ahead, build one of these things, and put your life in your hands because you wanted to save $7.50

    • @eliosmoonelios3152
      @eliosmoonelios3152 6 лет назад +1

      I can do it for less than $5 each.

    Oh, okay, I get it. someone (not a mechanic) with a lot of money to scrapped, when out and got a ton of tools. Nothing else to do on the weekends decided to manufacture something that looks like a car jack stand for personal use. Doing so, refused to pay a few bucks for a pair of jack sands. Bravo.

    I like the piece of angle iron at the top. Good looking welds. This stand took me back to the late '50's and early '60's. I remember seeing these in garages where my parents took their cars, and in wrecking yards for ease in parts removal. I think gussets would be an excellent idea. For all those people who think that only "store bought" is safe. I had a set of jack stands that was widely sold in stores collapse that was holding up the front of a '72 Peugeot, and the car did not have an engine! You guys don't understand that you can buy material like this at a scrap or used metal yard for a lot less than new. I'd rather have a set of well made, home made stands than a crappy pair from a store. This could use some beefing up, but it is a good idea.

    While I like the idea of making jack stands, I don't know how strong that single bolt is which is supporting the car. It may be fine for rotating tires, I am not too sure if I would crawl under the car to do an oil or transmission fluid change with the car being supported by a bolt.

    I wonder if the critics could make these ( I could) . Sure You could buy a set for 20.00 but This man made his own. It probably made him feel good doing so. they look fine and his welds look strong. Such heavy gage steel, Ii would climb under that car. When this man dies , if He has sons they will keep these and always know that " my Dad made these with his own wonderful hands"

      Just my cents worth, that's a stainless allen screw (also known as a cap bolt). Looks like a 6 mm (1/4"). If so, it has tensile shear strength of 24.000 IN, which is rough;y equal to 6.000 lbs. I think its strong enough.

    It is decently welded and the V marries up to the part of the sill designed to take the jack in the tool kit so could be worse. Might be worth screwing a nut onto the pin for peace of mind. I used a pal's stands the other day. Three legged. Better than my own a they can always be made to sit steadily if the floor isn't totally smooth.

Nowadays the yuppies wouldn't know how to make anything anyway, too scared to get their little hands dirty. If you've got scrap steel, tools etc, why buy something? Nothing like making your own stuff using your own hands, I've been doing that for decades. Good on you.
