Idk why but this excerpt is one of my favorites. There’s so much to appreciate about it. Great character moments from Davos, Stannis, and Melisandre. Beautiful and descriptive prose from GRRM. Interesting look into Westeros politics. Horror elements in Mel’s shadow assassin. A really neat expansion of the ASOIAF lore. There’s just SO MUCH great stuff here. Thanks for posting this.
i know Stannis was full of shit when claimed that he loved Renly. Maekar's speech about Baelor was more believable. if Stannis had his way, he'd be a king over the ashes, cause everyone would be dead. if he's the last of Baratheon, the house is better off extinct like the show. i could only imagine how terrible Shireen would turn out if she lives long enough to have children. if Shireen takes after her father at all, she'd turn out like Visenya, but less.... everything good about Visenya.
If Stannis was crowned more people would lose their fingers. But Westeros needs it. Lords need some king to remind them to watch their moves. All the other kings were busy fighting for throne while The Wall was begging for help. No one bothered to do anything except Stannis. Stannis is not perfect, yes. But still he would be best king among the others. Stannis is aware. He is harsh but a fair one.

ok...and the Frenchman voice is on point.
I mean, this is essentially a GRRM version of the Monty Python Grail sketch, so French accent fits well, even if it's not what I felt while reading.
