For those of you who are confused: The owner has had this car since brand new. The manual key that came with the car doesn’t unlock the doors. It turns but it doesn’t unlock them. If any of you have thoughts about that, let me know😉

Just dropping a comment to confirm this happens to older models as well. I have a 2005 (gen 2) and had the 12v aux battery die while the doors were locked. I tried everything to get the door to unlock, and the manual key did nothing. I know for a fact that the key used to work, as my fob had recently died and I used the manual key to unlock the car not more than 3 weeks ago. After the battery died, it simply no longer does anything. Tried WD40, oil, jiggling the handle, all kinds of crazy stuff people suggest, and nothing worked.
I thought I was losing my mind, but this video saved me a lot of trouble, thanks!

Just tried to unlock my Prius after the dead car battery was removed for charging (I had manually locked all my doors to my 2016 Prius without thinking). I was able to open the car just fine with the fob key into the drivers side door. Trick is to turn the key to the right, remove the key, then pull on the door handle. Make sure the key goes all the way in. It works :)

^ Had a 2009 prius and this worked for me.
I could put in the key and manually turn it to the left, but, car would stay locked and nothing would happen.
I did that again - turning it to the left by hand.
Then I used a pair of needle nose pliers on the tiny key to get more turning leverage.
Then I turned it all the way to the left as far as I could get it to go.
Then back to the right - back right past where the key started.
      Door unlocked.

I'm an automotive locksmith. We open 120-150 cars per week believe it or not.We also make lost keys. Your issue is very common and we haven't figured out why yet. Toyota,Lexus and Honda do this when the battery is dead. The emergency key turns but won't open the door. If you think about those are the only ones we see because people who got them open don't call us. We use professional tools that do no damage. Access Tools makes the best car opening tools. They are coated and do not scratch the car. We also see a lot of emergency keys that were never cut or miscut. Those will go in the cylinder but won't turn at all. The turning and not opening though is something I would like to figure out. Back in the day BMW's did something like this with a dead battery. They used micro switches on the door cylinder. They key would turn to a certain point and stop. You would lift the outside handle and that would allow the key to turn further and unlock the door. They also used a deadbolt feature.

I know the video is old but I decided to reply the same, I had the same issue with the manual key but it turns out you REALLY have to put a lot of effort into turning the key. Like use a vice grip to increase the leverage and then turn.

If you’re using a vise grip you’re asking for trouble and you’ll break that key

Wow, i literally went through/relieving the exact situation starting at min 6:50, today. But my AAA roadside assistance couldn't help open the door. F$%$. I think he was missing the tape like you had, or he should use a coat-hanger to have a smaller hook because each time he tried to open the lock. It would slipped off.

  • @stuartgoldsmith2310

Ok just had this exact issue. Heres the fix. Put key in. You'll notice you can turn it to the left and it doesn't seem to do much (thats probably actuating a switch but dead battery so nothing will happen). You now need to turn it further to the left. This took a bit of force for me. You'll feel a definite mechanical click. You can now open the door. Good luck.

A battery with a voltage below 10.5V is damaged. We sometimes manage to revive it with a very.. very slow charge at the beginning and after return of the 12V... by using an intelligent charger, but we 'll never find 100% of the original capacity. This method can help out for lack of something better. This engineering mistake does not make you want to buy a Toyota.

He was in for a nasty surprise, the battery was under the hood. That's with most vehicles where you can go underneath the car and pop the hood raise it, then switch the battery and your back in business. But the design flaw with the Toyota Prius c is that the battery is under the rear passenger seat. If you are stuck with a dead battery in that car, you go through some lousy inconvenience

But you can jump from the posts under hood in the fuse box.
