      That's a great question I had to do a lot of shopping around but mainly I found most of eBay, itales things easier if you can get the OEM parts number as searching by the name of part can give mixed results. Hope this helps, thanks for watching

    Wounder if you could answer a question for me. When setting points on a mercury 9.8, do you line up the high side of the lobe with the point, or with the part that touches the shaft? Thanks brother!

    • @wildnwright245
      @wildnwright245  2 года назад

      I'm not sure what you mean by the high side. What I did was loosely tighten the the point assembly so it can be adjusted with a feeler gauge. But I do them both, so I will set my adjustment and then tighten. After that I will put the outboard in forward with the spark plugs disconnected and spin the prop with my foot slowly watching the shaft move around,. The shaft will have a oblong shape and the part that pushes out is what will make the point contact. You will have to play with it so when on point contacts that other is open. If you message me on the Facebook page wildnwrightfishing I can try to help more. Thank you for watching.

      @@wildnwright245 By high side he is referring to the crankshaft lobe which is oblong (the top part of the crankshaft that you were showing was not completely round). When the point adjustment contact hits the high side/highest point of the lobe you adjust it to spec and tighten it. Turn motor over a couple times and recheck it when the point adjustment contact is against the peak height of the crankshaft lobe/ against the highest point of the oblong crank lobe.

    might get new points...
    my 1970 110 was running, but poorly last summer.
    rebuilt carb and fuel pump, new spark plugs..
    replaced all fuel lines and tank.
    NO SPARK now.
    after testing coils, suspect coils and points are bad.
    Ugh.
    Compression, you think 90 is low?
    mine are both at 50!!!!!

    • @wildnwright245
      @wildnwright245  3 года назад

      Are both cylinders with 10% of each other, if so then compression might be ok. Coils are prolly fine but I would bet your points need re gapped/filed or replaced. If it doesn't fire still then you might need to look into a repower

    • @greghudson1489

      @@wildnwright245 Yes, they are both right at 50 each.
      I didn't even know this engine HAD points until recently.
      At least they are a lot cheaper than the coils, if they are not re-usable.
      I need to dig into that next. After I finish working on my brother in law's mower. Again.

      Long delay, and bouncing between your two videos.
      Going to recheck the new points I installed, and taking a video on my phone from this/yours to be sure I do it right.
      The old points were pretty bad, and I replaced the insulators as well.
      It did run fine before with the lowish compression, so hoping it still will.

      The early 70’s ,9.8s use phasemaker( high voltage) ignition they use “maker” points not “breaker” points.
      The phasemaker system fires when points close. Stator failure was very common on that system if using the kill switch repeatedly.
      Lots of info on that if you look up “Mercury Phasemaker Ignition”.

  • @curlcd

    You are backwards on the way the coil works with the points when the points are closed meaning this way she's closed current is flowing through the Transformer or coil as it's called. When the points open the field starts to collapse in the coil which induces a very high voltage in the secondary windings. So the spark actually happens on the cylinder when the points go open not when they go closed

      I had something similar after I replaced my wiring, I believe mine was point gapping. However that insulated block was also cracked which prolly didn't help.
