    I think the purpose of Angier tearing up Borden's secret was to show that he'd gone beyond just wanting to understand how his wife died and doing a trick better than Borden. He didn't just want to take what Borden loves most. He wanted Borden to know that he'd taken everything from him so that he'd suffer like Angier did. Death wasn't painful enough for him to inflict on Borden. He wanted Borden to die without understanding why, just like he couldn't get closure on Julia's death. That's why he tore up the secret. Borden thought that if he gave up his secret, he'd get what he wanted because he thought that his secret was what Angier wanted most. All Angier wanted at that point was to make Borden suffer.

    I'm Nolan fan, but to me THIS is easily the best in his filmography. Arguably Angeer's third act motivation was to take a daughter from Borden in retaliatory recompense for his wife.

    I think something you missed that wraps the Lord Caldlow stuff at the end is, the end game isn’t about the trick anymore. The end game for Caldlow is taking everything away from Borden because he feels Borden took that all away from him.

    I don't get what confuses you about Angier's endgame.
    The movie makes it clear that his plans change as his pursuit to best his rival goes on.
    By the end, he feels like he's won. Not only has he made an act/trick that surpasses Borden's-- but now he has used it to basically end his rival's life.
    He's done it. He's won. He has the better trick AND he now gets vengeance for his wife's death.
    He no longer needs Borden's secret. And he live the rest of his life with that comfort. Go down in history as great magician who died tragically.
    Life is good....
    Y'know, until he gets what was coming to him.

    What Angier wanted was to be able to take away the most important thing from him, his daughter, he couldnt forgive Borden for taking his wife from him...amazing movie. He had to kill himself so many times to pull off Bordens sentence

    Angrier wanted to bask in the glory and amaze the audience. He even says as much in the movie. It’s just that over time this changed from ‘an’ audience to ‘the’ audience- Borden. He wanted to one-up him in every way and gloat in his face.

    While the idea that Angier has to kill himself for every act is interesting, why couldn't he just duplicate himself only once and do the trick like Borden did. I guess the only reason for this would be that he didn't want to sacrifice his personal life like Borden did so he killed his other self every time.
    Sometimes there are obviously stupid ideas/actions in the movies which are mostly unexplained (not thought through). I guess I kinda feel that way about this movie. Also, while it does not specifically matter in the context of the plot, I am wondering which Angier actually died? Does the moment of duplication transfer conciousness to the clone therby actually preserving his mental state... This is where The Prestige gets me thinking...
    Similarly to The Prestige, Christopher's Interstellar is a bit too wibbly wobbly timey wimey. I guess after reading the idea of the initial script by his brother Jonathan, I felt that the movie's ending was kinda broken.

    • @Lux_Lethal
      @Lux_Lethal 3 года назад +3

      I always thought Angier's motivation for killing the first clone was knowing himself, and all of what he's capable of doing. The thought of having another rival, or thinking the clone would be willing to kill him was terrifying, and you can see it on his face. Through his vengeance he became utterly selfish, and was unwilling to share his world with a copy. I think after murdering that first one it became easy, and he just decided it was necessary to be "the best."

    • @crumbl3d
      @crumbl3d 3 года назад +1

      @@Lux_Lethal Yeah makes sense. Also it is food for thought: would you be able to share your life with your clone with nobody knowing there were two of you. Definetly is a scary question whether you trust yourself.

      He didn't, the machine never worked. The hats outside Tesla's workshop are the equivalent of the budgies in the magician's workshop. The only time the magic of the machine ever works is in Angier's diary and at the end on the stage. We know Angier's diary is full of lies and is designed to trick Borden (the playing with the unreliable narrator is an obvious plot point) so why wouldn't that extend to the final trick? Angier knows Borden is going to be at the show so he killed his lookalike.
      The whole film is about how magic isn’t real, but rather about keeping up a pretence until the very end, magic isn’t real, but the illusion is what keeps us interested as an audience. Cutter says himself "Never show anyone. They’ll beg and flatter you for the secret but as soon as you give it up, you’ll be nothing to them... The secret impresses no one.”. So why would Nolan go against that? Why, most crucially, would Tesla’s cloning magic trick ever be possible? It's not. Angier says to Cutter when he is challenged by him "“You never understood why we did this. The audience knows the truth: the world is simple. But if you could fool them for a second and make them wonder.. it was the look on their faces.” In the shot of the containers at the end of the film they are all either clouded up or the bodies are supposedly decomposed apart from the one with Angier's lookalike in it. Angier's took his magic to the grave with him in what was the ultimate trick. And so the film ends on these final lines “Now you’re looking for the secret but you won’t find it because you’re not really looking. You don’t really want to work it out. You want to be fooled.”

    This is the best and remains my favorite Noland film of all time. Each new film of his I compare to The Prestige. It still is to be surpassed in my opinion.
    With full respect to the narrator of this video essay:
    I can't tell if he "really" understands the ending of this film or if he is being careful not to revile the ending. Either way I enjoyed the video and the movie is excellent.
