It's all about culture. Some cultures destroy what they have. The Swiss cherish and maintain their home, and guard it very well.

Being on time is not only respectfull and polite, but also has an ecconomic reason.
If you have 9 people waiting for the last one 6 minutes, this actually is wasted 10 x 6 min = One Hour!
The higer ranked the meeting is, the more one Hour costs!

😄 Do you know the reason why we do that? It’s because decisions are never made during a meeting but around the meeting (so 15’ before is about the time to do some last lobbying)... that about party, is not known to me (and it’s actually not considered as polite 🤷🏻‍♀️).

You can't possibly judge the people of an entire country based on one city alone, specially a country like Switzerland, which has 3x distinct linguistic areas (Swiss German / French / ltalian). Geneva is in the French-speaking area so it could (/should?) be used to talk about ethnic Swiss French only

    • @ghalijaidi2723

@@ghalijaidi2723 Ethnicity is a general term referring to a group of people who have certain racial, cultural, religious, linguistic or other traits in common, if you're not happy with this you can say French-speaking Swiss but this could be misleading as it may refer to (for example) a Swiss coming from the Gernan-speaking part of Switzerland who can also speak French, whereas "ethnic French" means someone who has French as mother language

    • @ghalijaidi2723
      @ghalijaidi2723 3 года назад

@@ramreff8066 my issue was how you worded specifically « Ethnic Swiss French » instead of simply saying « Swiss French » just as anyone else would.
It implicitly excludes people from other ethnic backgrounds and creates a category of people that isn’t necessarily homogenous. Culture as well as religion, race and even vocabulary can vary wildly across Romandy, describing that as being of the same “ethnicity” is really a big leap. Someone from Geneva and someone from Fribourg are going to have very different perspectives on these aspects, especially because of Switzerland’s political system and the relative autonomy that cantons have.
Besides “ethnicity” is a word heavily related to race, a common ancestry, common traditions, and it is clear that this doesn’t apply to this case.
For example Geneva is clearly part of Romandy nowadays but has only been part of Switzerland for 200 years or so. To call it the same ethnicity as the rest of French speaking Switzerland, is a bit dishonest considering that many cantons, such as Valais, Fribourg, or Bern are bilingual and share much more in common with their German speaking neighbors.
And no Geneva really is not an accurate representation of Swiss French people as it is the smallest canton, with the most urbanized population, and is generally much more culturally different.

Wow as a swiss (studying political science) i m surprised you see some „communism went right“. True Switzerland has some good social security but it really isnt as extensive as for example in the nordic countries. Switzerland has always been dominated by the liberals and still is. Small fun fact: the FDP (liberal party) is the party that has been the longest holding the government worldwide by a far margine (since 1848 uninterrupted in power) 😉

Tax is paid to the village or city you live in, plus there is a federal tax, which is the smaller portion. You get a tax form or go online for a self declaration and afterwards you will get an invoice. Choosing your place of residence can save you a lot of money. An employer has to provide you with a salary declaration for tax purpose. Your share for social security, pension fund, insurance, etc. is directly deducted.

    • @londiniumcross5122
      @londiniumcross5122 6 месяцев назад

We Swiss are no racists and you would be welcome to work as a nurse here. BUT you need to be qualified and show evidence that you are trained as a nurse. Still with your African qualification, you will have to do further training to get a license. In Switzerland, we don't just do something to look after patients. Nurses here, be it Swiss or another nationality, have to do a 4 years apprentiship to get the Federal qualification after the final exam. Only then, they can work as nurses. That includes schooling and work and low payment during that time.
Everything here is a lot of education and work that is regulated by the Federation. We have very high standards but that's how this country is running.
But you will not encounter any disadvantage because you're African. Like anybody else, you only need the funds to live here, sustain yourself during education, and to do so, you have to speak one of our official languages, Swiss German or German, French, Italian or Reto Roman. English is no official language and we have no nurse education in English. We have many foreign nurses here, of all ethnics, without discrimination. If you meet the requirements, you will be fine.

As you say : just don’t through money around, cause it’s not falling from the sky (comes from taxes, so you’re actually paying shit yourself even if it might seem “free” - nothing is anyway). Well, to live in switzerland you first need to be employed or prove that you are financily independent.
If you are a civil engineer I would guess that you would need to understand german, french or italian (depending on the region) to be employed.
Except it's maybe a company that'a more international focused but on a local level I don't think it would be accepted if you couldn't understand other people on the construction site.
Not being able to speak the local language isn't a plus for being employed, considering that alot of germans, french and italians immigrate to switzerland I don't see much chance that some company would employ someone who doesn't speak the local language. That sounds maybe harsh but it's the truth.
If you are self employed and in the civil engineering and focus on international projects this might be a different case.
Cities like Zurich,Geneva, Basel, Lausanne ect. are possible without knowing much of the local language.
But I would not recommend it to be honest, it's always better to know at least the basics. At least if you consider staying more then for a few months.
Monthy cost of living varies from city to city and from lifestyle to lifestyle, hard to give a specific answer on that.

As a native from Geneva, I would say that half of the population is able to speak and to understand English.
Therefore, this is not quite essential to speak french.
However like it is written uphill, it is more reasonable to speak french in order to be fully integrated.
For the rest, if you want to settle in German speaking Switzerland you'll have to speak German.
I speak french and I'm still learning English. It will be convenient to go back to my city of birth. But, I'll have to relearn German in order to be able to move to Bäsel Stadt, Berne or even Zürich later.
And I have planned to learn Italian to be understood by the locals in the Tessin (Lugano).
I would say that Switzerland rewards polyglot people.
Anyway I hope you will find your happiness in our country !

@@NODEUSAMADEUS Well I think that you both have points, even if they weren't always articulated very clearly.
I get what you're saying that language is just a means of communication, and that regardless of the usual language spoken, there is an overwhelming sense of unity and identity as "Swiss".
On the other side, I can see what the other commentator is saying. From an anthropological standpoint, language is considered a part of any country's culture. There are many different things that language does on top of communication, and there's even some research to suggest that the way we speak may shape the way we think.
Beyond that, the language spoken in certain areas can indicate a level of foreign influence or historical ties. Taiwan speaks Chinese because they're formerly Chinese citizens (not a great example because it's a rather contentious point, but I hope it shows the point). All of that is to say that Switzerland is very unique in that it is one country which speaks 3/4 distinct languages that are almost exclusively defined by region.
That sort of begs the question of how unified it is, and you have been very gracious to explain that, despite those differences, Switzerland is still very much a unified people.
However, it now makes me, and presumably the other commenter, wonder if there are distinct subcultures within the larger culture of Switzerland that have developed along those linguistic/regional lines, and if so, how do they differ? Are there dietary differences like, for example, more chocolate consumed in Zurich than in Geneva, or more wine drunk in Bellinzona than in Bern?
It's a rather complicated thing, but then again, so are humans. I hope this has helped explain and de-escalate, as I'm sure no one was asking questions with ill intent.

Miko can I ask what courses or online tools are you using to learn French?? Thank you!

Im not big on learning languages ( I admit although I ashamed), I am however obsessed with efficiency. So I was looking for a method to learn a language in the most efficient and least painful way. I have grammar and exercise books, so I started with frequency dictionaries, to be sure that if Im learning a 1000 words, they better be the 1000 most used. Then I did some more research online and I've stumbled upon this ted talk:
      ruclips.net/video/iBMfg4WkKL8/видео.html&ab_channel=TEDxTalks
This blog post by Tim Ferris:
      tim.blog/2014/07/16/how-to-learn-any-language-in-record-time-and-never-forget-it/
And thats how I finally landed on the app I use which is Fluent Forever. Its perfect for my use, although probably not everybody will like it.
Beside this (lets call this active learning), I think its really important to listen to the language a lot. I listen to this podcast and RUclips channel to train my ear:
      innerfrench.com/
      I hope this helps!
      Bon courage ! 😊

No worries , I’ve been living in Geneva for about 4 years now so I already know the city and the language. About blocking , yeah , you deleted my message on the video in RUclips where I asked you for advices on the city , I tried to contact you on Instagram, you read my message and then you blocked me on Instagram , anyway , just like I said no worries , I’ve actually already forgot it , it’s just that now I live next to your building in paquis and I saw you on the street this morning and I remembered the blocking (still do not why) and the impoliteness. Take care !

Sorry mate, I really don’t remember 😞 please don’t take it personally. From my perspective, I get a surprisingly big amount of messages, and I still have a job and a family, which I need time for. So if I get repeated messages i need to handle that somehow
