    90% of the flats/apartments you find are empty, in many cases they don't even have light fixtures. So buy As much as you can from where you're coming. Also, having an agency taking care of finding a flat for you will give you a clear advantage, but it will cost you a couple of thousands of course.
    If you're a beer drinker you have to stock up in time from supermarkets, as local beer is ( for my taste ) of a lower quality than german/belgian beer - but they do have excellent wines, of course. Also they are not allowed to sell alcohol after 21:00...this is one thing i don't understand, so bye bye going after 21:00 to stock up for your ongoing party

    • @Miko_PS_in_Switzerland
      @Miko_PS_in_Switzerland  4 года назад

      Hello and thanks for your comment! Yes, the tickets are ruthless, 50-55 probably was not that expensive, but if you exceed the limit by more, it becomes a big deal. Exceeding the limit by 20-25 km is already considered "disturbing public order" which is a different category of an offence. And if you run a red light 2 seconds after it has changed, you ca apparently even go to prison for a short time. I drive very carefully here 😂😂😂

      Hi Esteban thanks for your comment Im glad you liked the coffee part ;)
      Regarding your job search, I know how frustrating this can be. I've been there, my wife has recently been there, many of my friends as well. I'll be working on a video on this topic in the upcoming days. Can I ask what websites are you using and what industry? If you don't mind me asking of course.
      You're right, the virus does not help, a lot of offices are closed, those which are not closed work with minimum staff. If I might suggest something, if I were you I'd spend the time now (2-3 weeks) just building a database of where you'd like to send CV, prepare the CV and motivation letters but wait a bit before sending. Otherwise, they are going to get lost under all the other emails when people are back from the virus situation. Of course if you are applying on designated recurring websites keep doing that, but I'd definitely consider resending again the applications you've sent now in a couple of weeks once the virus situation settles.
      My wife had a similar situation, she started applying for her job around July, vacation period, some companies replied as late as in November. She then resent the applications to many of the companies with a good result, she has a nice job now 😊
      Keeping my fingers crossed and good luck! you'll land your dream job, just a bit of patience! and let me know when you do!!

    Thanks for the video. Interesting points. Several question: would it be cheaper to rent a small van, go to France and buy there all your electronics (fridge, stove, microwave, washing machine) and furniture?
    Also, if you do your stoppings in France, I heard that you can not import meat products into the country. Is that true? What other restrictions you might have on the border control?
    Is it viable to live in France and work in Genova? In my current situation, I live in France and work in Monaco and those 2 countries have an agreement on taxes so I don't get double taxed

    • @Miko_PS_in_Switzerland
      @Miko_PS_in_Switzerland  4 года назад +3

      Thank you for watching and for your comment Cosmin!
      1. As far as electronics go, the tax on them in Switzerland is rather low, so I wouldn't bother with going to France. What's more, if you are bringing new items in, you will have to pay duty on it. So it doesn't really make sense.
      2. Regarding groceries in France, it's a common practice in Geneva among both expats and locals. There are limits on what you can bring but they shouldn't pose a problem with you shop for 1 - 2 weeks for yourself (details on limits here: www.ezv.admin.ch/ezv/en/home/information-individuals/travel-and-purchases--allowances-and-duty-free-limit/importation-into-switzerland/duty-free-allowances--foodstuffs--alcohol-and-tobacco.html)
      3. Regarding living in France, I'm not an expert on this one, but I know some people do this. There are some points to take into consideration such as:
      - insurance (France vs CH)
      - tax (not sure how this works, to be researched)
      - residence permit (instead of normal B resident permit I think you'd have to have a G - permis de travail frontalier)
      Some details can be found here: www.ge.ch/demander-permis-travail-frontalier).
      Let me know if this helps, if needed I think I can find some more research on the living in France aspect. Best of luck and success Cosmin! See you in Switzerland!

    Hi! Thank you for this helpful video. I am considering continuing my studies in Geneva and have heard about many students commuting from France in order to lower their expenses. Could you tell me more about it? Is the public transportation system valid?

    • @Miko_PS_in_Switzerland
      @Miko_PS_in_Switzerland  4 года назад +11

      Hello and thanks for your comment! Sorry for taking so long to reply. I haven't studied here so Im not an expert on the topic, but living in France would drive the costs down SIGNIFICANTLY. Housing is cheaper there, and so are all other expenses. I for example (like many people in Geneva) make my groceries in France. Per month I spend roughly half of what my colleagues (making groceries in Switzerland) do (can you imagine that 4kg of beef cost the same as a basic apple watch (3rd gen), just as comparison. Public transport will not be a problem, it works impeccably in Switzerland and there are some cross border connections. many people do it, no worries here. What you have to pay attention to, and here Im not able to advise much, is student/living permits. You have to see if its ok to live on such permit in France. After all when studying in CH you'll get a student permit to live here, but in this case you'd be a resident of France. Make sure to check that out, im by no means saying it's not possible, just make sure to check. I hope all works well for you, see you in Switzerland !

    Thank you very interesting. So a question: if finding an apartment takes 3 - 4 for months where do people (new people who came to Geneva) live all this time?
    2. What is wrong with taking shower after 10 (pm) I didnt get this part what does it have to do with police? If I come from a night club and want to take a shower at 3 am how does this offense police? Really weird!
    3. Not having laundry machines inside apartment? Jesus Christs. Are we sure we are talking about Switzwrland? (this would be virtually impossible to rent out the place without a laundry machine in a country where I come from).

    • @Marikitahh
      @Marikitahh 3 года назад +1

      Hi Markus, as someone who has live in Switzerland since 2009, guess I am qualified to answer these :)
      1. Most people who come to Switzerland already have a job offer on hand, precisely for that reason. But, if you are adventurous enough, you have other options - Air BnB, sublets, hotels. Do keep in mind though that for a lot of things you need a permanent address, for example, you need it to open a bank account or to get a contract with a mobile service.
      2. This is a bit of a myth, as the law doesn’t specifically prohibit taking a shower/using the the toilet. What IS a real law here is making excessive noise past certain hours. Regarding police getting involved - it really depends on how lucky or unlucky you are with the neighbors in your building. Some are quite understanding and will not complain, even if you have a party once in a while, others will call police on you or even threaten you directly for “walking” too loud. The problem is that most building in Geneva (especially close to city centre) are quite old, with virtually no soundproofing and a common plumbing. So yes, I guess in some appartements you will actually hear if your upstairs neighbor flushes the toilet at 1 AM. Personally, I never got in trouble for taking a shower past 10pm, but I also know people who received nasty letters from their neighbors for watching TV too loud (it wasn’t). So to summarize, it really depends on where you live and who lives next door, but you do need to respect the general “peacefulness” culture of the Swiss.
      3. Yep, that was a shocker for me too and still is one of my main complaints about the housing situation here. Do not despair though - even if a lot of places don’t come equipped with a washing machine (or any furniture for that matter), you CAN find some where you can install it. Either in the bathroom or in the kitchen. To be honest I’m not sure as to why it’s not more widespread in Geneva, but I suspect it has to do either with the average size of the bathrooms here/old plumbing infrastructure or the ecological reason - people are encouraged to use less water/energy by only doing laundry at specific times during the week.

      Hi Miko
      Opening a bank account needs proof of address and when you want to rent a place they also ask your bank details in most cases even here in London the landlords do not trust foreign bank accounts so it is a kind of catch 22 if you know what I mean, however if you manage to rent place then you are sorted and meanwhile you can use your bank cards anywhere within Europe until you get your Swiss bank account, Swiss are exceptionally conservative and old-school orthodox.

    Hi Miko which part of Genéve you're at? BTW it's nice to recall some facts here. Yes English is widely spoken here especially the youths you find in the Parc, Universites or Café but you need French when dealing with Hôtel de Ville or Cantonal dept and Jurisdiction services. About the expats, totally agreed. You don't need cars in Genéve because TPG is excellent whether it's 🚊 🚄 or 🚌. Every 3-5 mins if you're in the centre places like Cornavin or even Nation and 10mins if you're else where. Genevoise are spoilt by public transport but bloody expensive. If you don't have tickets, the fine is about CHF 100-140 and no mercy. As you said Suisse law is strong. That's how the people in Cantonal talks. It's really good you reminded about Document translations especially insurance etc. Merci beaucoup pour cette video. 😀🙏

      Hi and thanks for your comment! Having lived in Maastricht NL for 5 years and Geneva CH for nearly 3 years, I'd say NL are and always feel more liberal. I think NL, for me at least, lands in this great sweet-spot, where the country runs very smoothly and is very well organised, but people are still relatively relaxed and easy going. Relaxed and easy going is the last thing you'd say about the Swiss. I do not intend to be mean, just an observation. So this would be an advantage for NL.
      Advantage for CH is definitely the salary to prices ratio. I mean Switzerland is of course more expensive than NL, but the differences are not that big, whereas salaries (for example the financial industry) can be around 2 - 2.5 higher in CH than same positions in NL. And the climate is better (at least to my liking) in Switzerland. Warmer, more sun, almost almost Mediterranean. Whereas Maastricht felt for me, especially in autumn almost almost nordic.

      Some people chose living in France as it drives the costs down . Housing is cheaper there, and so are all other expenses. I for example (like many people in Geneva) make my groceries in France. Per month I spend roughly half of what my colleagues (making groceries in Switzerland). Public transport will not be a problem, it works impeccably in Switzerland and there are some cross border connections. What you have to pay attention to, and here Im not able to advise much, is living permits and health insurance. Instead of a B Permit (for living and working in CH) you will have to have a different permit (Permis travail frontalier) more info here: www.ge.ch/demander-permis-travail-frontalier.

      It’s possible to bring a car from abroad but you must re register it. From what I’ve heard it’s a complex process.
      It’s not that the cars themselves are expensive in Switzerland’s, it’s rather the taxes (depending on engine size from a couple hundred to a couple thousand CHF per year) and insurances

    It blows my mind .... in 2024 that people are that UN-WILLING, to even allow you to try or that they refuse english. It's not like we would never learn french or german, but the lack of understanding or their expectations to have that fully before is unrealistic. Quebec is like this in Canada they are insanely rude and refuse to help people in their own COUNTRY because they speak Eng. And yet my WHOLE LIFE I was never rude and even helped as a teenager to an adult in my small town - Refugees from Ukraine, Germany, Ghana, Kenya communicate and help with their english. Then later living in Toronto or other areas, I met all kinds of people from Portugal, Italy, Nigera, India, Peru, Mexico, Spain, Chile, geesus YOU NAME IT ... Norway.. China, Korea, Laos, and NEVER have I truly have seen people in general REFUSE to attempt to HELP someone? Unless I have missed some cases.... even if they try a big of English Gov workers WILL help them or connect them with someone who can .... AND YET if a Canadian wants to go to these places it is like GOD FORBID you speak english in getting documents done and wanting to do things the right way and would be willing to take classes. I dont have more than gr. 10 French so I can understand a lot but not necessarily speak it well and cannot write it. Thats so insane to learn that people would be like GFYS and not help you. I dont get that in the world we live in now seems really Ignorant tbh. Again not expecting them to change at all, and for me to learn but there also should be a happy medium in not refusing to HELP people or try in todays world.
