Lots of memories along state Ave late 70's and 80's Indian springs, venture, Wolco car dealers galore I remember that big sears and restaurants near the two big cemetery where grandma grandpa all my mothers side relatives are layed to rest I need to get down there and visit the Graves at 47 too many good memories
I remember that place and also the flamingo best Western by the old Indian springs my grandmother and aunt and uncle lived out on metropolitan Ave late 70's and 80's
Just to note - West Haven's owner (Tom Bush, if my memory is correct) lives in the house on the hill behind it that Mother rented for many years. The bakery was Walter's Bakery that later moved to State Ave.
My parents and I ate out every Friday night. We ate there Fridays and other nights for several years. Restaurant was always full of diners. It was closed and reopened several times. The last was going to be a Mexican restaurant. they spent several months getting it ready to reopen, but only lasted about a day. Summer before my 6th grade, a family moved into the motel until they could find a home to buy. I became friends with the son my age. He said they lived there about a month. The restaurant gave you a choice of salad or a V8 with your meal.
This property was built and owned for several decades by a Mr. Peterson who had a dairy farm nearby. The restaurant manager throughout its heyday was Ernest V. "Ernie" Cooney. I do not know what year it closed. Mr. Cooney's grandson is on one of the Kansas City, Kansas Facebook pages. You might get some information if you posted a note asking Cooney's grandson to respond to your request for information. Good luck!
Was open until 2004/2005 and then it was pretty shady. Often referred to by those in the area as "The Pink Mot" as, towards the end, the only part of the pink neon sign that lit was the MOT in Motel. It was bought about 2 years ago by a family that had plans to rebuild, but I don't think anything much came from it. I had delivered food there about 2 years ago and they had plans that they shared, but as I see, nothing has been done.
I do Abandoned photography in KC. I was photographing this place awhile back when I noticed surveillance cameras. Shortly after that, two men in a car rolled up on me and asked me if I was (someone, could hear the name clearly) daughter. I said I was just taking photos. He said ok and left. He was very nice but I wasn’t there long before people showed up.
It would be nice to see it opened as a motel and restaurant, but unlike motels on route 66 it would probably just attract drug dealers. There is nothing near it to attract high paying customers. It would take a lot of money to make it an attractive retro destination. I've seen this place all of my life but I never ate there or stayed there. I've just recently taken a interest in old motels. I have located the address of most of 15 motels in kcks that were on state. There are two that don't exist that I have not found the exact address of but I know approximately where they were.

We never stayed at the motel, but we went swimming there every week when I was younger, back in the 80s.
