Mick Karn's incredible bass playing totally transforms the song. What a genius he was. RIP.
Love his playing...he normally play fretless?
@@gewglesux exclusively since 79. ripped out the frets from an old Ibanez then played an aluminium necked Travis Bean which would never stay in tune due to temperature changes, thus giving his heavy vibrato/portmento technique. he then had a pair of Wal's made (the Tulipwood topped on being the most famous that turns up on Japans Tin drum and Oil on Canvas lps...the other was cherry) and in his later years he had Klein graphite headless made.
Thanks for the reply and good information.Another one.. removed the Frets and made himself a legend.Has such a diffrent sound!@@williamross2579
Totally agree a bass legend!
Karn was my inspiration to order my Wal in 1983.. Love his style. But I have to say he overplayed here. Sorry!
Phil Collins, Brian May, Mick Karn and the Midge self... what a lineup! Am I forgetting someone?
John Deacon
@@GiveMeYour-BlackAbalone John isn't there. Mick Karn is on bass. Mark Brzezicki on drums with Phil. Howard Jones on keys.
The sexy backup singers?
@@jj-or2jn he played on Joe Cocker’s The Letter
@@sralyn Paul Young's back-up singers from 'No Parlez' - I think.
I Love Mick Karn's Bass lines here, as always he is the x-factor and funky
I watched this live performance on DVD sometime back in 2004. I was blown away by Mick Karn's melodic bass lines and how he made this song really stand out compared to Ultravox's original studio version. This was my most favorite part of the Prince's Trust concert and I must have played this rendition of Dancing With Tears In My Eyes a thousand times.
That DVD of mine is sadly long gone, so thanks so much for uploading this on YT! ❤️🙏🏼
What amazing drummer is Phil Collins!! 👏👏👏👏
Brian May is absolutely amazing, not only as a rock God but as a man that’s doing his best to protect wildlife. What a kind man he is, love him!!
The Old lady rocks all the way. :)
Outstanding live performance of an Ultravox golden tune ! With Collins on drums, May on guitar and Karn on the bass, splendid !!! The top gun of the pop rock musiciains ! Ure a genius composer and great singer !
What a voice! Goosebumps.
Die besten der besten der damaligen Musiker auf einer Bühne! Einfach nur genial!!!
MIDGE URE ❤❤❤ OOOOOH I LOVE HIS MUSIC HE IS AMAZING AND NICE GUY❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks so much for sharing this!!
I did very detailed research on this & came up with the following for every musician onstage here (yes, I had too much time on my hands!!):
Midge Ure (James Ure) - guitar, vox, md
Midge Ure All Star Band (Prince's Trust All Star Band)-
Brian May - guitar
Howard Jones - keys
Mick Karn (Andonis Michaelides) - bass
Mark "the Octopus" Brzezicki - drums
Phil Collins - drums
Gillian O'Donovan - b.vox
Suzie O'List - b.vox
Gary Barnacle - tenor saxophone
Barry Gardner - flugelhorn
John Thirkell - trumpet
Luke Tunney - trumpet
Pete Thoms - trombone
didn't recognize Howard Jones 😃
amazing bassist rip
yes Mick Karn.
This Supergroup live version markedly superior to original. What a treat for those lucky enough to be there😮
Micks bass made it extraordinarily wonderful, great vocal, terrific percussion in fact everyone's contribution 👌
Billy Curries Arp outro on the 2010 Return to Eden tour would beg to differ 😉
And don't forget Brian May!
Phil Collins is a Plus!
Mick had to learn all the performers songs by ear, what you hear is entirely his interpretation, he didn’t read music, he didn’t even know the notes on the fingerboard... at the end of his career he didn’t even tune up as he could compensate for slight off tuning... a completely original voice in music. RIP Karnivore
The more I listen to Mick the more amazed I get. Like you said, totally his own voice.
The bass player is killing it... an amazing turn for the original bass line...
Rip Mick Karn
The great Mick Karn from Japan!
@@nickavenoso7851 great bassist..
what agreat artist great Lyrics great voice and performance i loved him so much.
i have this dvd for many years!!!! i had the vhs too: Phil Collins is amazing with his drum fills, breaks but he's again with another drummer the complicated name : the Big Country 's drummer
amazing rock sound-song
loud drums like in the late 80's -90's
Phenix returns Mark "the Octopus" Brzezicki.
Felt I could hear Mick Karn within a few seconds and YES-gifted much missed legendary artist👏🏻
Other players quite good too.
GOSH... what a monster lineup... all my 80ies legends together...

🥺
The underrated Midge ure
DAMN!!!!! 🤩
I love the song!!!! from the 80
On fing fire 👏
Ultravox!
and hes got brian may on guitar and i think phil collins on drums. does not get much bigger than this Midge !
What a line up !
I always wondered what it would be like to put a Kahler in a big ES hollow body guitar, pretty frickin' cool I must say!
Wow never knew Ed Norton was such a good singer
Surprised Brian didn't recruit the brass section when he formed the Brian May Band 29 years ago.
But Freddie Mercury was already ill and finished his live performances in 1988.😥
@@laurisindonen5834 true.
Mick Karn on bass?
yes!
A bit too shouty for its own good and Midge mangles the lyrics a bit too. Otehrwise a pretty good AOR version. That's what he should've done to crack America in those days - instead of limp "Answers to nothing".
Monitor issues, if you seem him at the start he is nodding for more in the monitors...
Wait is Brian May too
I did a little SQUEEE when I saw Brian May!
Also Phil Collins on drums!
@@ReepPT Bri Bri!!!!
I forgot the words in October 2022...
I've never seen a kahler on that type of guitar lol
What kind of guitar is Midge Ure playing?
Not one of his best performances, and judging by the look on his face he knows it too. Quite a few problems there. But still a great musician
😳👏👏👏👏👏👏
Mick Karn's bass so good it competes with melodic line of singer & helps ruin performance. Then again the whole musical setup is unbalanced & singer struggles with song. This is one of the worst recordings of Ultravox I have heard. Even trumpet is heard blaring. Truly awful.
Shame, he wrecks the guitar solo and syarts playing in the wrong key..I think it's the monitors. May blasts in at then but Midge could have done a fast guitar solo and gone for it.
I thought I was the only one who felt the guitar was slightly out of tune and that Midge's playing wasn't articulate enough. Live performances are either a hit or miss but this song's guitar solo is technically simple and he initially played the wrong notes. I like this performance only because of Mick Karn's melodic bass lines.
That corny brass section and gospel choir RUINS it. A shame, as it is otherwise amazing to watch it being played by May and Collins and Karn.
A mess at best. Too much going on creating pure sonic confusion. Horns? Don't be ridiculous. What on earth song was the bass player trying to perform. Lastly, would have helped if everyone was in tune. Meanwhile, Midge Ure rises above the chaos and delivers a good performance...thankfully.
Performance was free mate. Let them play.
Dude shut up
am I the only one thinking that the bass player is doing a bad job here? (yes I know, Mick Karn... but maybe he did not have enough time to rehearse)
Not necessarily bad but I think he did overplay the tune a bit. Even so it's nice to hear this with an actual bass part rather than synth
I was thinking the same thing! I like Karn's playing - you know it's him when you hear him, and that's a good thing - but I think he over-playing here. It was like 'lead bass' all the way through the song! And Ure's guitar was flat!
From what I heard, he had to learn all the musicians songs by ear. Didn’t read tabs, music, nothing and his bass was slightly out of tune, but he dealt with it.
