In the UK, individuals living in cars due to partial homelessness result from a complex interplay of factors. High housing costs relative to income, stagnant wages, and income inequality drive this issue. Job loss, weak social support, medical expenses, evictions, and lack of affordable housing also contribute, while systemic problems and inadequate policies further perpetuate the phenomenon.
Considering the present situation, diversifying by shifting investments from real estate to financial markets or gold is recommended, despite potential future home price drops. Given prevailing mortgage rates and economic uncertainty, this move is prudent, particularly due to stricter mortgage regulations. Seeking advice from a knowledgeable independent financial advisor is advisable for those seeking guidance.

Here’s why, rental prices and mortgage repayment rates have become unaffordable because multiple governments have failed to build council housing for decades.
Yeah, I want a free house too! Build free/below market housing and they get filled. So build more. Filled. More...filled. How long before the entire city is free housing? No one left to pay for the "free" housing. However, this can actually work. Singapore has kind of done this. 79% of people in Singapore live in public housing. Basically the Singapore gov keeps ownership of land and structures, becomes the main landlord. By providing excellent housing people seem happy to rent from the gov. The gov then has a lot of control over the mix of housing types to build from tiny places for the poor to bigger very nice places for well to do. Collecting rent is cheaper for the gov because a renter can't just skip out on a landlord and get a new place with another landlord. Seems like a pretty great system. But would people in Britain allow such a system? Doubt it.
It will be even worse with Labour, unfortunately. Housing has been seriously mismanaged by all governments going back decades. You can't just blame the current Tory government. @@samanthabarry5817
Homelessness is growing because of how grossly overpopulated the uk is there simply isn't enough land or resources for this many people to have a high standard of living we have almost a third the population of the United States crammed onto a piece of land smaller than the state of oregon its an absolute disaster
Thanks for your excellent comment. Yet, successive governments have allowed uncontrolled legal and illegal migration, which became totally unsustainable decades ago. Rishi Sunak is proposing to allow significant numbers of legal migration, which is plain ludicrous.
There's plenty of land free up in the north, or west. Vast swathes of land that hasn't been developed. But the UK is a very uneven economy: All the work and money is down in the south-east, around our mega-city.
Housing changed from a social and human necessity to a commercial store of wealth and an investment vehicle. In an era where every plot of land and every brick is owned by someone, its impossible to expect people to keep up with the growing mortgage burden or the lack of viable renting options. Social housing fulfilled a niche that unfortunately, has been decreed to be unneeded, even though it successfully saw generations of Britons through in the second half of the 20th century. Thatcherite sell-off should never have been allowed, since something that was kept for public benefit has been turned into a private monopoly. Look up the tragedy of the commons, this is just a repeat of history.
Absolutely, rents have gone up terribly high in the U.S. In many parts of Connecticut, the homeless people are living under bridges, parks and abandoned buildings. There should be a cap on rent control.

@@brendagordon4571 Your last principle will work just fine, as long as there is a cap on landlords' expenses, too, which will of course never work. Landlords have huge costs and responsibilities before making any profit.
For decades there's been expectation that housing must be an investment which will increase in value. That has to happen, because for many millions of people the house is their retirement plan. If it doesn't gain in value, their future is in peril. That worked for a time, but if average house prices have to go up above inflation by a couple of percent a year, eventually we reach the point of today where housing becomes unaffordable - and as rents are tied to house prices, rents become unaffordable too. But still there's little government can do to get out of the mess they made. They could build huge numbers of new homes - either themselves, or by incentivising private sector developers. They could focus on the lower cost types of home, blocks of flats and rows of three-story terraced housing rather than large individual homes. But if they went that route, then by the law of supply and demand the value of homes would plumet - and just imagine the anger of people who see their vision of comfortable retirement vanish beneath them.
The UK population has gone up by 15% since 2000 through immigration whilst almost nothing has been done to accommodate that increase. This fact shouldn’t be ignored as a contributing factor.
The problem is we can't accommodate the increase we desperately need to reduce the population here otherwise our living standards will continue to fall year after year until we become like Bangladesh
We have the same problem here in the US. Maybe someday we should have a joint revolution to get rid of the establishment! Good luck to our British cousins!
Happens in The Netherlands as well, and we are supposed to be one on the ‘’richest’’ countries of Europe and indeed the rest of the world. It’s a shame that only the top 10% of individuals get to enjoy that. It’s especially painful for children, having to grow up like this.
This is happening in nearly all white "rich" countries. If this is what richness brings us, we need to aim to be poorer than sub Saharan (black) Africa.
@@GeordieIsDrunk Thanks for your very well informed comment. We have the same problem in the UK, where we now have a net migration of 700,000 per year, which became totally unsustainable decades ago. We also have significant miss allocation of public housing, leading to very long waiting lists, including families, in real need. We also have a huge problem with anyone in the whole world being allowed to buy housing in the UK, seen as a very safe country to invest in, with relatively low taxes. Many foreign buyers buy new builds, which otherwise first time buyers would ideally buy, so mop up significant amounts of housing that UK citizens cannot buy. These are usually left empty, as appreciating capital assets. The UK government will not even discuss this big problem.
yep uk bureaucrat class is addicted to endless regulation that pushes up costs. Landlords have to comply with 168 regs, no wonder many have just given up now
The question of AirBnB was not even mentioned. Someone did a research lately, and among other things they found an apartment block in London with 118 apartments, where only 2 are residents, and the rest are air bnb's
There are also whole blocks of flats and homes that are owned by non UK citizens, as successive governments have allowed anywhere in the whole world to buy property in the UK. Our country is seen as a very safe place to invest in, with relatively low property taxes. When will any government have the guts to do anything about it? Countries like Singapore, India and Switzerland do not permit foreign buyers of residential property, to secure it for their own citizens.
Thanks for your well informed comment. Some estates where the local authority is the freeholder do not permit short term subletting, including Airbnb, which is classified as operating a business and is illegal. Long term lets are OK.
@@Lucienne-zz1sw I will disagree with this to some degree. I am not a citizen of UK, yet I live here. By your logic I should not be allowed to own a home here. In my opinion the problem is not so much who exactly owns it, but how it is used. For one, the short term lets are a plague. Second, where I live, there are a lot of abandoned buildings in prime locations. The owners of those should be taxed heavily, otherwise they have no incentive to do anything about it. Thirdly, the practice of selling council properties to tenants was and is very bad idea. If I recall correctly, only 8% of housing is owned by councils in UK. Say, in Austria it is over 50%, and they dont have any shortages.

So , is the UK like the America of Europe?😂 Because every time I watch documentaries like this, it is so relatable. Like literally sooooo much of the same thing is happening in the US.
Don’t necessarily agree. You possibly watch documentaries like this from the UK more than from other countries because of language, I might be wrong. I’m half English half American so have seen both sides and this isn’t solely a UK problem. Germany has pretty much equal food bank use to the UK is one example I’d give. I always think that western Europe is divided between a richer north and a poorer south with the UK being the bottom of the richer side. Just my take.
I anticipate a housing market downturn due to the numerous individuals who purchased homes above the asking price, even with favorable interest rates. Despite the low rates, many are now at risk because they lack equity. If housing prices continue to decline, they may face difficulties selling or even risk foreclosure if they can no longer afford the property. This scenario is likely to impact a substantial number of people, particularly with the anticipated surge in layoffs and the rapid increase in the cost of living.

That is a problem that is not going to go away without discussion and debate. When we acknowledge that this is an unsustainable problem then we can improve the situation. Not going on those who earn more but by the vast majority who do not, then these problems will reduce maybe even turn around providing prosperity, affordability for the majority of people which will also save children from poverty, homelessness and unemployment. If we have more to spend then we have velocity of money which will help drive the economy. (Economics 101).
People rarely talk about council tax. It's amazing the large proportion of people who pay no council tax at all. Consequently, the burden is put on the hard working taxpayer. This is rarely discussed. I have never heard it talked about by any politician or the media.

The housing crisis in England has been at least 40 years in the making. Right to buy wasnt introduced to help working people get on the property ladder, its an ongoing attempt to privatise social housing, whilst using the property market to drive the otherwise failed economy. There are deep rooted problems in British society that would take a generation to fix, and cost hundreds of billions. The only way to fix the housing crisis is a massive social housing building program not seen since the 1960's
I'm a child of the 1950s, as a kid most families would have a lodger in the spare room ( made by squeezing kids into one bedroom ) or big old houses had a family in every room sharing a kitchen and toilet. Nowadays folks love privacy and kids expect a bedroom each, so lodgers are a thing of the past. I lived in a crowded house shared a bathroom with 6 others untill l married and rented a small flat. Managed to buy a fixer upper years later.
PS when we bought our fixer upper 40 years ago, the home loan interest rate was 16%, our purchase needed a 20% down payment and repayments were half of our wages! We both started work on leaving school and so had no student loans though, unlike lots of kids today.
Cant even afford a fixer upper on todays average wage not when paying rent and cost of living. How can we save a house deposit? Private landlords make me so angry ripping off tennants to get richer
It seems that the housing problem in the United Kingdom has never been fixed since memorable times, its prices are too high, the worse if you do not have social assistance for housing, it is a disorder, the housing problem in England is like a vicious circle where you spend half your salary in rent on top of the high cost of living, a report says the UK faces a major housing challenge. The same thing happens in the United States with housing problems poverty and unemployment where there are people who live in caravans or pay high rent for a shared room, however in Latin America and other countries the problem is the poverty and lack of opportunities that makes people emigrate and they have to live badly, these are the controversies that life has. In England, the typical home is priced more than ten times the average salary, less than 1% of properties are empty due to the high cost of both rent and sale, and living space for private renters has decreased markedly in recent years. decades.
Equity in a house will likely be tapped into via a HELOC or straight sale. I believe if they sell, many will go back to renting. And housing supply will inevitably rise. So you can borrow against your home. What could be the best allocation for my $1m liquidity? Perhaps my stock portfolio...
Buyers are extra cautious right now. They want to make sure they’re getting a good deal given how much mortgage payments have gone up, and when they don’t feel like they’re getting a good deal, they’re backing out, so definitely looking elsewhere is a necessity
In my opinion, home prices will need to fall by at least 40% before the market normalizes. If you do not know whether to buy a house or not, it is best you seek guidance from a well-experienced advisor for proper portfolio allocation. So far, that’s how I’ve stayed afloat over 5 years now, amassing nearly $1m in return on investments.
Jessrobbie, I will be glad to enlist the services of a reputable one? How do I go about finding and vetting them. We know the value of a fiduciary as we have a family lawyer and he has hinted on it occasionally, so we began to consider the idea.

The late former prime minister Margaret thatcher was a big admirer of the late Lee Kuan yew the former ruler of Singapore and the man whose administration is credited with making singapore what it is today. Mrs thatcher was actually inspired by a housing scheme in Singapore that was being implemented there, she liked the idea so much she floated it to the British people where they were now allowed to buy council housing stock as first time homes. In Singapore meanwhile they were actually building the homes for this scheme and were not dipping into social housing homes and that was the difference. So in Britain everybody was now buying council houses but the conservatives never built new houses to replace the ones that were being sold and I blame them for this mess. Had they implemented this scheme the way Singapore had by instead building the new homes for sale rather than take council houses, all this problem of homelessness wouldn't be this acute.

I never become complacent, and think it couldn't happen to me, in this world. They say, we need more housing, they do. But mainly for the rich, many can't afford it. We have too many empty houses, empty warehouses, and old factories, that could be used to accommodate such people. As a society, we are taking a giant step backwards instead of moving forward. It's getting like the 1930's. Or Victorian times. The trouble is, there are too many beggars, pretending to be homeless, and making a fortune, making it harder to tell who is genuinely homeless, and who is not. Or I'd help them out. I feel for the homeless, especially when it gets cold. Where is the humanity?. Where is the cup of human kindness?.
So in 2023 there is probably around 300k homeless people in the country. Since 2010, an average of 50,000 British properties are demolished, and around 70% were fit to live in before being bulldozed. That means we'd have about 350,000 fit to live in homes if we didn't demolish any habitable homes in the next decade, enough for a home/flat for each homeless person, and likely spare...!
Thats true in my council they said i have to wait 10yrs for a council housing. In a private rental and the benefit doesn't even cover full rent and as a single parent were struggling. Ive completed my msc and it was refused saying im disabled to work as a diabetic which is controlled. Why wait did these racist people wait last min when ive passed everything, now ive got a massive student loan with interest. I have worked 6 nights a week before and got this flat and now its a struggle to keep on benefit.
Yet, some migrants are housed in council or housing association houses. One such family has frequent police visits and even has 3 cars parked outside, one a Merc, the other a SUV.
The answer here is simple. If you do not have the prospect of an excellent standard of living in UK, leave the country. In reality probably 90% of the population should leave as soon as possible. Britain is about class, about privilege. The Crown Estate owns 55% of the land. Go somewhere where you have a path to prosperity, not an iron door in front of you which only opens if you have the right connections.
If only we could all afford it, I fancy Australia but you need at least 200k in the bank to even get a foot in the door and that elusive lottery win doesn't want to come my way so that's a bit of a problem. Most of us are stuck and forced to go down, very soon, with the sinking ship!!
If you double the cost of mortgages, double the cost of utilities and food increases 30 percent in one year its bloody obvious that many people will no longer afford to live..homelessness will get much worse. If the temperature drops as it will in the coming days and weeks many of the poorest pensioners will die from cold.this country is in a severe downward spiral I dread to think how bad things will get in uk in the next couple of years..
The majority of social housing has been sold off, mainly to housing associations. They depend upon private rental sectors but they have escalated the rents to extortionate levels. They have not built social housing as they said they would. Even people who work full time jobs cannot afford housing now. It has become a luxury most cannot afford. Housing is a basic human necessity and it should be treated as such.

Notice marriage rates are falling with a high divorce rate. That has created a financial mess for many. Plus we need twice as many housing units for 2 single people rather than 1 couple. That increased demand drives up values and rents. We feel entitled to live by ourselves. That's expensive if you also feel entitled to live in extremely popular areas. Plenty of available homes outside of popular cities.
The UK needs to build and refurbish a huge stock of local authority owned housing for rent. This will put a stop to the tens of thousands of semi-criminal private landlords (often Tory donors and wealthy friends of Tory MPs) who currently exploit vulnerable people by charging extortionate rent in return for substandard housing with damp/mould/dangerous electrics/pests. New legislation needs to be put in place to ensure that local authorities maintain these properties to a decent standard, with stronger penalties for non-compliance, and greater compensation for victims. What is currently called social housing, such as "shared ownership", is not even remotely social housing, it's a colossal scam. We need to keep building more local authority housing until there are no homeless, and nobody comes out of prison with nowhere to live. The most vulnerable should be in local authority sheltered housing with appropriate mental health support.

There are so many empty office buildings etc, why can't they be used to home people? I've noticed in some areas of Nottingham, there are boarded up houses (and they've been so for years)....why are these buildings not being renovated for use? Rents are often ridiculously high and then you have utilities etc on top of the rents. Some landlords are thriving because of high rents and they do nothing about the mould, cold etc as long as they get the cash! The government don't care, councils are near bankruptcy and only the rich can afford to live in comfort!
The question is how many of these home ownerships are really occupied. Just recently I read an article that e.g. in London round about 11% of ownerships are vacant since it has been bought by millionaires from Russia, Asia or Middle East as pure capital investment. Not to forget how many flats are used as vacation homes which is much more profitable to landlords than a normal tenant.
All I will say is that I am a Management Consultant earning in the top 10% of the UK population and I cannot afford buying a proper house in London. This is ridiculous.
@@Nepetita69696 Yeah it's insane. The worst is that even if you say earn 80k+ in London, you will still not be able to find a good flat. An ok flat yeah but nothing great. How this is supposed to work for professionals who earn 30k and less is completely baffling.

It's astonishing how people never mention the major issue: rent. If a law was passed that required all rents to be reduced by 50% and capped at only 5% maximum rise per year, the cost of living crisis would evaporate overnight.
A well meant, but badly informed proposal. If this was implemented, it would lead to huge numbers of landlords having to sell up, as letting would be even less viable, leading to even higher homelessness. Many people have no concept of the large expenses landlords have, before making any profit. If a landlord cannot make a modest profit, he/she will be forced to sell or the mortgage lender will repossess the property, both leading to evicting the tenant. This is the reality, although it doesn't meet some people's agendas.
It's been hitting us hard in the US too. If you are a manual laborer, you can guarantee being priced out of your home, unless you want to work a 2nd and 3rd job. After that, you either team up with family or friends, or prepare to join a tent city. The answer is simple, but they won't do it: rent needs to come down by half, house payments too.

Many young people in the US are buying small remote lots and land plots where they put tiny homes on them. They're learning how to grow their own food and many of them are living off grid.
The govt are being really negligent. No human being should sleep on the streets. Why can’t govt make single units as half way houses until the occupant can be helped back into society, as many areas of the US have done. There should never be sub standard rental properties because each council should regularly inspect any property owned by a landlord. Should make a council inspection law before it is let. Once a tenant is in, they are often afraid to ask for repairs, let alone make a complaint. Yet the govt and councils are doing nothing. They clearly don’t care less.

Had they done so they too would have been sold off. The Government need to rescind the Right To buy.
Doubt it.

@@Lucienne-zz1sw I will disagree with this to some degree. I am not a citizen of UK, yet I live here. By your logic I should not be allowed to own a home here.

Second, where I live, there are a lot of abandoned buildings in prime locations. The owners of those should be taxed heavily, otherwise they have no incentive to do anything about it.

70s we lived in a farm-ouse and we -ad lod-ers to fill oter rooms it was ok as a kid. Farmouse still as lod-ers
And you were all breathing in asbestos. Those were the days...

UK is not alone all other western countries are also in chaos . No more countries to plunder and colonize to enrich themselves.
This will get worse , councils sold all council houses, now rents are ridiculous , people cant find affordable homes,
The councils were allowed to sell their housing stock but not told to build more houses with the money they made.
The money was used to support tax cuts instead. Great for the government at the time - they got to enjoy low taxes and an economic boom time, knowing full well that the cost for their partying wouldn't come due for a couple of decades. I'm really surprised it took a full 40 years for the scheme to collapse.
They said they were going to build but they just didn't. They got away with doing that.

Eye-opening knowledgeable video for everyone. A must watch video.
did it mention the 1.2 million ppl who came to the uk last year? i'm guessing not.
I don’t know when the economic strata are from but UK isn’t doing that well. Poverty is at the highest in real terms since 1974.
British born and im ashamed of this country. They should start building more rather than getting into wars and funding other nonsense.
I like your ff8 picture.

wtf fix your english first i couldn't read any of that "msc graduate" LOL.
Like where?

If only we could all afford it, I fancy Australia but you need at least 200k in the bank to even get a foot in the door and that elusive lottery win doesn't want to come my way so that's a bit of a problem. Most of us are stuck and forced to go down, very soon, with the sinking ship!!
@@margo7059Then India obviously doesn't need the Overseas Aid the British taxpayers pay for !
This happens because nobody regulates the prices and their range.

Yes I suppose if you combine that with the increased immigration and the air b and b's and some cc couples having more than two children
Divorce industry is good business for legal bosses
Yeah the people that made documetories like benefit street should be arrested for crimes against humanity.
Too many asylum seekers given homes instead of those born there
where is the policy Britain first
We're in 2023 and not in 2016. It's much worse now. Time for an update!
I have never been a fan of Uk,i have a big house in my home country and i am enjoying free housing, may God help all those that are homeless in UK and provide for all thier need,In all Africa is the best
It's like going back to the victorian era. They will be reopening work houses next
Uk should utilize its countryside better. The problem with small countries is that populations are concentrated in the urban areas which leaves you with 2 solutions: either expand the city or develop the smaller towns
Not just that they give you the bare minimum to live on and you still have to pay part of the rent, it's illegal
High rents, low salaries, zero hour contracts and no sick pay. Thinking of hopping over the pond to Ireland where they help their citizens far more than
Here in my city in Canada all the homeless people are drug addicts. If Canada was like Singapore this issue would be solved.
Yes many people say the same. Many existing buildings need renovation. Then can be used as housing.
interestedly the UK has one of the highest home ownership rates in the world.. over 65 -70%
The question is how many of these home ownerships are really occupied.
Yes london house prices are ridiculous , I do feel more for the working class , who work , hard and try to get a break but to no avail
@@DC3Refom yeah it's ridiculous.... like why even bother getting up in the morning if there is nothing to work towards?
@@TiGGowichNow imagine what the other 90% feels when they can barely afford rent.
@@Nepetita69696 Yeah it's insane. The worst is that even if you say earn 80k+ in London, you will still not be able to find a good flat. An ok flat yeah but nothing great. How this is supposed to work for professionals who earn 30k and less is completely baffling.
I hope im not still homeless in next few weeks its getting cold 3 months with no shelter takes alot out of you ive tried practically everything the housing team basically doesn't help I'm appalled of this government nobody should not be in situation nowadays 😢
If prices don't go down, means more homelessness
Council houses are being sub let to the highest bidder without a rental contract .
Something happened in the late 1990's... birthrates have collapsed and we are shrinking as a population and ALL population growth, is imported. It didn't have to be like this.
We must put others first even thou its Harmful to Britain and British People, Bloody madness
Rents will continue to rise, and evictions will not stop until social housing is built in areas of need.
I think it's time for England to build massive housing. Nobody should go homeless.
It's been hitting us hard in the US too. If you are a manual laborer, you can guarantee being priced out of your home, unless you want to work a 2nd and 3rd job. After that, you either team up with family or friends, or prepare to join a tent city. The answer is simple, but they won't do it: rent needs to come down by half, house payments too.
good luck with that. this is here to stay and it was planned
Majority of the US doesnt rent except cali and NY, In the midwest we dont have this problem, dont group us with you coasts.

Investors are destroying the housing market around the globe. Corporate investment has really destroyed the housing market in the United States. And the banking system have too high of standards to meet for many of the homeless. But a coming depression will change everything. We can only hope it's for the better.
