On a serious note, do this while you are in a state of good physical condition, in your early sixties for example. I am 73 and my health has been declining for the last ten years, I am not able to declutter any more but I wish I had done so earlier. As one ages, clutter gets in the way, especially when you have a walker or a wheelchair and other medical equipment and supplies, you soon realize that things are not that important anymore..
I agree! Also, as someone who is young and also disabled (my sister has similar physical issues), inheriting all my grandparents' junk has been completely daunting. They were hoarders too! So much that might have been sold, we had to hire people to fill 3 40-yard dumpsters, just to be able to walk in their house! A word to the wise: the people we leave behind, may not be physically capable of dealing with a load of things either. The more you declutter, the better!
I’m 74. Donated all my card making equipment yesterday ( thousands of dollars worth). Haven’t used them in years. The lady that picked them up kept saying, “ What a blessing”! That made me soooo happy!
Ten minutes in, favorite quote so far: “It’s a blouse that became too small, some how.” I just love your mother (who is my age), and I’m happily rewatching these videos that I loved the first time around.
Me too. Gosh Kathy is SO funny and even moreso bc she doesn't realize how funny she is. But honestly, Shannon is just as funny because she brings out Kathy's sense of humor !
Shannon's mum is not only decluttering, she's doing it with a smile and gusto. She and her husband can enjoy their retirement and not be weighed down with stuff.
What I love about this is that you two are having a great time, laughing, and bonding and creating more memories. Compared to having to go in to a deceased loved ones stuff and not being angry at having to deal with it all. Good memories instead!
I spent a few days helping my mom declutter multiple closets and dressers last summer. We had some laughs thinking of how she saved certain tops for 20 years thinking she would lose weight and fit into them again, and I said- why would you punish yourself by wearing this old crap and not treat yourself to new stuff as a reward? She was left with a neatly organized closet of only items that made her happy. And she jokingly said "keep these 2 dresses, maybe I can wear them to my funeral" at one point during our cleaning and that was actually helpful information to know. She passed away unexpectedly just a few months later.
"Things that were important, that aren't important anymore. " That is one of the biggest lessons I've learned in decluttering and helping other declutter.
I love your mom. She reminds me of mine who passed. She always said she was decluttering so we wouldn’t be stuck with it after she died but like your mom everything very nice and clean but packed full . Very full of stuff 😊

My parents and all family members from their generation have been dead for at least ten years so my sisters and I sat down one Saturday afternoon and went through several boxes of old family photographs from the 40's, 50's and 60's and trashed a ton of photographs. Hundreds of beach photos showing only the sun setting on the beach, old photographs of church events where we recognized not one single person, photographs of shiny new cars but nobody standing in the photo, etc. and each one of us kept a single shoe box of photos. It was such a relief!! I have since gone through my shoebox and thrown out a few more.
I am 68 years old and identify with your mom. She is a hoot! What cracks me up, however, is that she’s always trying to get you to take things, Shannon. Two of my three daughters are minimalists and have taught me so many life-changing lessons. It is critical to revisit decluttered spaces and I am so proud of your mom for downsizing like she’s been doing. It’s difficult at first but I think she’s developing some pretty strong decluttering muscles.
I’m sitting in my childhood home- taking care of my 103 year old daddy- and looking around at ALL the stuff I’ll be going through eventually, whew! I’m also thinking about ALL the ‘collecting’ I’ve done over the last 30 years myself (I’m about your mom’s age) and I’m OVERWHELMED 😳😳😳 So glad I stumbled upon your channel-it gives me hope! Cheers from Southern California!🌴😎🌴

Hi, my name is Kathy and I also live in Southern California (Temecula) and have been in my house for 30 years. I have been decluttering recently and cannot believe how much stuff we can accumulate. You two inspire me~ thanks very much!
October 2024. We're in a 2BR apartment. Your parents have a huge space. Our climbing days are over, so things are going to have to fit in a smaller space. Craft supplies fit in a small bookcase or under my bed. Books are on 2 shelves. We have one small linen closet. Tina, Al's wife

We sold my mom’s house last year. Had to go through 60 years of stuff. She still had wedding gifts from 1960! I’ve been my house 30 years. Clutter free in ‘23!
What a great mum, daughter combination - you made decluttering fun, & made me determined to continue mine. Since August 2022 I’ve lost four & half stone so have been through clothes, now gone to the charity shop. I need to now start on other clutter & also I have a huge fabric stash, which needs to be sorted through. Thank you for your tips of how to do this really useful. 👏👏👏
I had a large fabric stash too, and donated fabrics I no longer 'loved' to my village church. The sent it to a mission schol where it was used to make dresses etc for the girls they help there. That made me so much happier than any of the things I could have made with that fabric that I didn't really like any more! Good luck with your decluttering ✨️
I have done the Swedish Death Clean. I have five dressy tops, five plain, five leggings and two pairs of jeans. I do have some dresses but I always wear them in the summer every day and If I get anything new, something goes. Minimal bed clothes, bathroom towels. I have my grandchildren’s pictures and only a couple of decorative items. My paperwork is minimum too. Cupboards and fridge. Every thing is done so my daughter doesn’t have to deal with a lot. Lol, at 66 I am very active and don’t want to have a lot around. Less is more space.
Love your mother's sense of humor. Our lives go through different seasons and our bodies also change not to mention our energy levels. One thing that helps me go through my closet is put on my favorite music.
@@shannontorrens1 I just recently got a winter color wheel to help me choose what clothes need to go since I have figured out I have a winter skin tone.
Everyone needs to do this for themselves and their loved ones. Just because someone is older, doesn't always mean that they will die before their kids.My younger sister died at only 50, her son at only 21 and a few weeks ago, I survived a heart attack at age 61. I always assumed my 79 year old Mom would die before me, leaving me with a large amount of things to go through, but that is not always the way it happens(I was lucky this time). My Mom has a huge amount of clothing that she never wears. She has decluttered a few things over the years when I tried to turn her onto minimalism, but not as much as I would have liked. I always worried that when she dies, I would be overwhelmed, like I was with my younger sisters things when she died,(18 green giant trash bags of clothes alone-nevermind the rest of her stuff when she passed), but recently with my heart attack, I realized that someone may have to deal with my stuff, sooner than later and it has made me realize I have let the stuff creep back in over the years and am no longer the minimalist I used to be.Thanks for this awesome video ladies.Doing this is a huge gift to ourselves and our loved ones.
I just ran across your video and oh my gosh. My husband and I are in need of decluttering (just like your mom & Dad) and as I am around your mom's age and my husband is a little older we realized over the last while we don't want to have our kids go through the same cleaning up the parents place after they pass away (as we did). Having your Mom in the video and showing her angst at the beginning and how at ease she seems now and appreciative of the process has given me that gentle push!! Kudos to your Mom as I know how difficult it is and easier to just "close the drawer", etc!! Thank you!!!!
I've seen where some people have used old broaches and chunky earrings and create collages. They pin them to a backing framed, and it's quite stunning and that way you can keep. Have great art. And eliminate what's taking up space.
My husband passed away unexpectedly in October, I have rapidly been going through stuff that we needed as a couple, but no longer need the stuff as a widow, now I did get rid of a lot of clothes, like 27 contractor bags, who knew we had so many clothes. I am donating EVERYTHING, I keep watching this video over and over because it's such inspiration. Reminding me of more stuff to get rid of.
I have always loved your mom/daughter declutter videos. I love your dynamic - reminds me of my mom and me. It was so fun to see this compilation and realize how far your mom has come! She should be so proud of all of the work she has done and how much her mindset has changed over the years.
I'm so happy to look back at all I have decluttered. I cannot imagine having all that stuff still in my house. Sometimes I forget what I've decluttered and think that I still have to go through it, then I realize it's already gone, and it's such a relief!! Thank you so much for your help Shannon. I love you, MOM.
I wore a jacket that was over 30 years old to a house party at Christmas time. It was beautiful when I bought it and with all the compliments I got at that party I guess it was still beautiful! I laughed all the way home and I remember telling my husband, see? Classic items last! I’m so glad I never got rid of it, and I don’t think I ever will, Because it’s beautiful!
What a FUN video! 🤗I know it's hard to let things go at ANY stage but the older we are, the more we have gathered over the years. I am 57 and just moved into Momma & Daddy's house (44years) and blending my own home with theirs. So much to do.... so much to give away, sell, toss.... Momma was my best friend. Watching the two of you made me smile and cry. We were so much like you two. I Lost her this Mother's Day (And same day as my birthday.) 💔Grief has made it harder to go through things. Baby steps I guess. Thank you for such a great compilation and sharing your Mom and both of your homes with us here. 🙏 Blessings to you all from the great Pacific Northwest, Lakewood, Washington! 💛🖤💛
I did this while prepping to move 5 years ago, and so glad I did it. Last year I did it again. My oldest brother is in the process of doing this now. It is such a gift to give your family, so they don't have so much to deal with when you pass. Sounds morbid, and the name of it is pretty strong, but its so freeing, for everyone! And you can donate so much to others. Everyone needs to do it. 🥰🌷❄☃💗✝
Me and mom are in the process of doing this. I don't think it's morbid but got an great grandmother who is Swedish so I guess I get it from her 😅. We had a mess to deal with my aunt who was a hoarder. We ended up getting help after 6 months of doing what we could, at 3 to 5 times a week. She had over 200 purses and over 200 pairs of shoes alone. Not including the clothes. And other stuff she had a ton of multiples. I just grabbed a few pieces of jewelry and her sectery desk cause I needed something to write on and do my bills and to organize it all.
Oh my goodness! I’ve been decluttering and minimizing for abt 10 years now. I’ve had to learn to “let go” little by little and to learn not to buy things & add them back in. For me it has been a learning curve. Just when I think I couldn’t possibly find any more things to get rid of, I revisit each area & find that I can still actually gather yet another box full of things to de clutter. I can’t explain it or understand it, but It happens. I’m 70 and still learning. It is so freeing to have less things. I used to spend so much time on organizing, reorganizing etc, but now I do it very little.
I also recently donated four items that were hanging in the living room from my parents’ house. Three of the items were scenic oil paintings and a Chivas pub mirror which our favorite local Mexican restaurant gladly accepted to hang in their restaurant. Point is, these art pieces will be appreciated by so many others. 💜💜💜
Have been watching a few videos during the evening.and I just wanted to say two things. 1 ) Your Mum is lovely, a real laugh. 2 ) You and your Mum have a great Mother / Daughter relationship. Long may it continue.
Your mom is adorable. I’ve been married 33 years and I have so. Much sentimental stuff and clothes that I just keep thinking I will lose weight. I did give away over 6 bags of clothes 6 months ago and I have 6 bags now to give away but yet I have more that should go but I can’t yet. I realize now the ornaments cards pictures over 33 years I don’t need and my kids will just throw it away when I die.
joshua Becker, the author of The Minimalist House says the biggest declutter you can do is when you have empty drawers so you can get rid of a piece of furniture. Even if it is a set, let the armoire go or something along that line. That really makes rooms bigger and less cluttered.
I watched this entire video even though I have never come across your channel before. I got a little sad in the beginning because you have such an amazing friendship with your mom and you were doing this together having so much fun and making memories. I’ll never get to do that with my own mom because we’ve never had an adult child/parent relationship and in my late 30s I don’t see that changing. I think I watched the whole thing just to experience what this could have been like for me and used you and your mom vicariously. Thank you for this.
One key thing with decluttering seems to be to have a partner there with you. There's nothing more motivating. I've always done it on my own and have helped others, but always wish I had someone to help me. I have WAY less in my home than the "after" in your mom's, but I'd still like to do more. You guys are adorable. Mom: Do you want this? Daughter: (always) No. Why does she even ask? 🤣
Sometimes hospital ER's will have a "clothing room" that will accept clothing that will be used by patients who are discharged. Often patients will come in with soiled clothing that needs to be cut off and the "clothing room" comes in handy for them! Psych units too---their patients often come in with only the clothes on their backs.
I’m a new subscriber and I must say I’ve never seen decluttering be so entertaining😂 Love your mother! I retired 3 years ago (69 now), and I go through stuff to declutter often. Just had several bags and boxes picked up by a local charity last week. It’s amazing how much we accumulate over the years and no longer use. Great videos Shannon.
I worked for Chico’s for 11 1/2 years and our sister store, SOMA, accepts your new or gently used bras as donations. I take all of my bras that I no longer wear to them. 😊. I really enjoy watching you and your mom. Your mom and I are so similar in what we own!
I LOVE watching you and your mother. She's so gung-ho about decluttering! How wonderful that she has you to help her. As we get older, we often find it more difficult to let go and tend to cling to our possessions. It's important to constantly declutter so we can make the best use of our space, whether big or small. Thanks to both of you beautiful ladies for making it not seem like such a chore. Im off to tackle my closet. By the way, your son is ADORABLE and SO helpful!
I had already watched all of these videos of your mom's house, but loved watching again. I am 65 & find these videos really helpful, & your mom is fun & truly a gem. 😊 I also realized I had not subscribed in the past, so today I made sure to show my appreciation to you for addressing the accumulation that occurs with my generation. (I might need to keep it for any emergency) Hugs to you & your mom for once again sparking a decluttering of my own house.
When you put clothes back on the hanging rod - turn the hungers back to front. If you wear something put it back the right way round. After 12 months get rid of anything still on a back to front hanger. 👍🏻 Love Swedish death cleaning, it’s empowering. Thank you
This compilation was so fun! To see your mom change from keeping everything to just keeping what she loves and uses was incredible. By the end I felt like I was watching home movies and laughing along. Well done!
I'm an Ebay seller too and it's so hard to just donate all my stuff when I can potentially sell things. I applaud your mom for donating so many things! There's just not enough time in the day to list it all.
I agree-we sell things to earn money back for our family. I hear people all the time complaining about not having any money but then they march down to the thrift store and give them everything they have they could have that they could have made money on.
I love watching you and your mom do these videos. Mom does such a great job and has a wonderful disposition. Don’t throw old clothes or undergarments in the trash though, I take mine to a textile box which you can find online and drop it off there.
When you mentioned donating towels to the animal shelter, I went to my local shelter website and realised I have leashes and other dog accessories from my chihuahuas that passed five years ago. Thank you!
My gosh! We've never owned that much clothing at one time! I go through our things at the end of each season and if I haven't worn it through that season it goes into a box to a local center that serves the town. I hate buying shoes so I rarely have something I don't wear regularly. I know what colors I look good in and I don't buy prints, usually, so that cuts out a lot of decision making when shopping. I also shop second hand. Retired, we garden so jeans and t-shirts for me and bib overalls and shirts for him. We mostly only dress up for church and we're at an age where if people see us wearing the same thing frequently, well, bless their hearts!
I absolutely love your mom! She’s such a hoot and a good sport too! I could watch you two for hours! Makes me miss my mom. I moved several states away. ❤
The day comes when we need to get rid of empty furniture….your mom is working quickly towards that. I loved that step when I reached it. Good work Shannon & Mom!
Sitting here with open cabinets and a paper-shredder shredding away while hearing you ladies chat. Thank you so much. It's wonderful to feel that you're not doing it alone while having all the privacy I need :)
Great video! Watching your mom sort through her platters etc has inspired me to sort my serving platters and bowls. I think I'm ready to get rid of some of them. Thanks for inspiring me! Hugs to you both!😊♥🐦
Love watching your videos. I sadly didn’t not grow up with a mom or dad and i always gravitated towards decluttering videos with mom in them ☺️ she also gave me a tip! I wanted to do labels for my clothing the tape hack works!! Thanks 🙏🏾
I've been clearing out my mom's house for nearly 2 years. 9 closets, packed so tight that I had to pull items off the hangers to get them out. 17 trips to a women's shelter with my car & trunk PACKED. I kept a small closet of sweat suits & jackets. I also cleaned out my uncle's house. My house is packed with what I can sell & keep. And 2 full Uboxes & ordering 1 more for My house. I so need This content!
Yes! I take everything my grandma gives me, then freely donate! I know it helps her and I know she realizes that I only end up keeping what is useful for our family. Just be sure to make decisions and deliver the donations quickly-don’t let it creep in unintentionally!
Thank you! I put all these together for anyone who might be interested in see them all together. So happy to have you here and I hope you are having a good day.
Sometimes I get anxious when I think about changing things around! How ridiculous 😂, but I do 😊. Lately after watching this type of video, I’ve been decluttering and organizing my things all over the house. I feel ok while doing it and not at all anxious and that’s because you all make it seem logical and fun ❤. I’ve accumulated so much and it’s taking a large amount of joy from my life❤. And yes, all this unnecessary stuff is a burden mentally! It’s hard to maintain and it was so cluttered that I didn’t realize how much I had and how many duplicates too 😊.
This was the best show I have watched, helping people understand the difficult part of parting with items..clothes, treasures etc..and family momentous.. Thank you..
This was wonderful. What I loved the most was seeing the progression it usually takes for someone to declutter years of stuff, like layers of an onion. I went through the same thing and am now in a very good place managing the things I decided to keep. I actually felt anxiety as I watched because I was remembering how I felt when I had so much stuff! I’m so proud of your mom, we are about the same age and I relate to her a lot. Thanks for all your helpful content Shannon! Hugs, Barb

Lol, at 66 I am very active and don’t want to have a lot around. Less is more space.
Love your mother's sense of humor. Our lives go through different seasons and our bodies also change not to mention our energy levels. One thing that helps me go through my closet is put on my favorite music.
I love that idea! You have to do what makes you happy and motivates you =)
@@shannontorrens1 I just recently got a winter color wheel to help me choose what clothes need to go since I have figured out I have a winter skin tone.
Your mom is a hoot. ❤
You have such a happy relationship with your mom, nice to see
I just ran across your video and oh my gosh.
Shared this video with my sister who has been reluctant to declutter. Today she cleared out 3 drawers. Yay.
Reminding me of more stuff to get rid of.
sorry for your loss. good job taking care of yourself 💛
I have always loved your mom/daughter declutter videos. I love your dynamic - reminds me of my mom and me. It was so fun to see this compilation and realize how far your mom has come! She should be so proud of all of the work she has done and how much her mindset has changed over the years.
Your mom is the best. Cherish her!
You and your mom are so sweet and pretty! You have motivated me to get started on decluttering.
I love the way your mom laughs when she makes a joke.. she has already inspired me to be more fun. ❤️
Yay! I hope you are having a good day.
Your mom is delightful
I'm so happy to look back at all I have decluttered. I cannot imagine having all that stuff still in my house. Sometimes I forget what I've decluttered and think that I still have to go through it, then I realize it's already gone, and it's such a relief!! Thank you so much for your help Shannon. I love you, MOM.
Thank you for this. I was ok with just out of sight, but I’m learning decluttering is a continuous process.
I am doing 7 years a go never finish😂😂, but you have still😂. We are waiting one more ❤😂
Your mom is so lovely.
I’m closer to your mom’s age, so I really really love these videos where you help your mom declutter. So encouraging!
Hi Jenny, Thank you for being here. I will have more of these videos coming up soon. =)
Brave ladies, not just what you show, but what you are willing to give away. You are very brave!
Your mom is so lively, beautiful and funny. I love watching her. She's actually like my mom, full of laughter. Great video.
You and your mom are so cute together!!! She is cute and funny.😊
These videos make me miss my mom so much! We would have had a blast declitteting
Have been watching a few videos during the evening.and I just wanted to say two things.
1 ) Your Mum is lovely, a real laugh.
2 ) You and your Mum have a great Mother / Daughter relationship. Long may it continue.
Oh thank you!
Hi Glenda, I completely agree with this so much!
I understand!
Aww, this actually makes me miss my mom who passed about twenty years ago.❤
Your mom is just the sweetest 🥹❤️
Your mother is such a wonderful lady!
“Should we have another baby ‘cause we have the blanket?” 😂😂😂 thanks for the awesome vid! Been cleaning while listening 🫶
This is my favorite decluttering video to date! I am 71 and have been decluttering for the last seven years. You and your mom are so much fun!
@@edennis8578 well at least you had a 3 yr head start. Maybe you can take some time putting it back and declutter on the way.
I just love your mom, she’s such a hoot, to be honest I look for videos that she’s in. I’m her age and she’s so relatable
Thank you Jenifer! I hope you are having a great day so far =)
When you put clothes back on the hanging rod - turn the hungers back to front. If you wear something put it back the right way round. After 12 months get rid of anything still on a back to front hanger. 👍🏻 Love Swedish death cleaning, it’s empowering. Thank you
Oops should have watched to the end 😂
One of the things I helped Mom do after Dad passed was to always go over and help her decorate the way they had. She and the neighbors loved it!!!
This compilation was so fun! To see your mom change from keeping everything to just keeping what she loves and uses was incredible. By the end I felt like I was watching home movies and laughing along. Well done!
It's wonderful to watch the two of you interact. You truly are friends.
I'm an Ebay seller too and it's so hard to just donate all my stuff when I can potentially sell things. I applaud your mom for donating so many things! There's just not enough time in the day to list it all.
So agree! It's a constant struggle
I agree-we sell things to earn money back for our family. I hear people all the time complaining about not having any money but then they march down to the thrift store and give them everything they have they could have that they could have made money on.
I’ve posted some things but dealing with a million messages is my issue
I do both. I put aside what I know will sell and donate the rest.
Right but does it pile up in the meantime?
I love watching you and your mom do these videos. Mom does such a great job and has a wonderful disposition.
Don’t throw old clothes or undergarments in the trash though, I take mine to a textile box which you can find online and drop it off there.
When you mentioned donating towels to the animal shelter, I went to my local shelter website and realised I have leashes and other dog accessories from my chihuahuas that passed five years ago. Thank you!
You two remind of my mom and I. So funny. Thank you
I absolutely love your Mum! She is such a great character 😊
Sitting here with open cabinets and a paper-shredder shredding away while hearing you ladies chat. Thank you so much. It's wonderful to feel that you're not doing it alone while having all the privacy I need :)
I love this, your Mom is such fun! Good job on decluttering, now I need to stop watching other people declutter and get started on my junk.
Love you guys together, I wish I’d had a mom like yours💋
Great video! Watching your mom sort through her platters etc has inspired me to sort my serving platters and bowls. I think I'm ready to get rid of some of them. Thanks for inspiring me! Hugs to you both!😊♥🐦
I use old or cheap washcloths to mop up water in the kitchen. Save having to use paper towels.
Love watching your videos. I sadly didn’t not grow up with a mom or dad and i always gravitated towards decluttering videos with mom in them ☺️ she also gave me a tip! I wanted to do labels for my clothing the tape hack works!! Thanks 🙏🏾
You and your mom are great together! I love your mom!!!
The local animal shelter is always a good place to donate towels. Thanks for donating yours there.
Absolutely!
Three cheers for your dad. He let go of quite a bit. And, your mom is still the best. Lots of fun.
I love this series. Makes me remember when I helped my mom declutter her world. I miss her and this helps.
Always fun when you declutter with your mom! 😅
I love you two so much, I laugh so hard like laughing at myself with one of my daughters ❤️❤️❤️ you both are so awesome 😁
Your mom is awesome! Such a riot. Love that she's so willing to simplify as well!
Your mom is adorable!
I have watched all your videos with your mom Shannon. She is SUCH a gem. Love her. And you!
Thank you..
Your Mom is a HOOT! So much fun working together!
Hugs, Barb
Both of you are really pretty! Great mother/daughter team!
THANK YOU FOR SHARING!
