Major confession time! I'm the same age as your mum, with three children ranging from mid-thirties to forty. I also have six grandchildren. I have kept every single piece of artwork, craftwork, stories, school projects and exercise books. They filled four enormous boxes. I've known for years that I should deal with them, and finally did last weekend. I had all my children round and they went through them for me, keeping what they wanted (which was very little), and giving me permission to dispose of the rest. I've kept the most special pieces and, with much sobbing, have got rid of the rest. It's like a bereavement for me, a letting go of precious childhood, but it was unsustainable. I've had to keep telling myself this mantra: If EVERYTHING is special/important, then NOTHING is. I can now honour the pieces I have kept, and can enjoy them. Lesson for parents out there: don't hoard like I did!

@@mariahwilson6505 Oh, thank you, Mariah. I've known since I was young that I have an irrational attachment to sentimental things - stuff that holds memories. It's been a hindrance, and I wish I wasn't like it, but we can't help who we are. I only post this to help others in the same position. I'd probably have carried on storing it all in the loft, but for the fact that I'm getting older and don't want to leave an enormous burden to my children. Best wishes.

Re kid art: I have a kitchen gallery wall, with art my now 16 year old twins made throughout their schooling, hung up in frames I got at thrift stores or on sale at craft stores. I have edited our “wall of fame” as they have grown, but there have been mainstays that have stood the test of time. No folders, no saving for “someday.” My thought is, display it for all to enjoy or throw it out.

So agree on the art projects but let me add to be sure it is your child’s art work. Years later, like 20 years after my kids graduated I learned that some pottery that I had been hanging on to was actually from a class mate that we didn’t even have a personal relationship with even during the school years. Both my kids told me the students were throwing away their after work at school and they brought it home just because they liked it! I never knew but had I looked at the initials on the bottom I would have discovered right away! It came out one day when my daughter asked “mom why are you saving…😂

    Great tips.
For important things like birth certificates, marriage certificate, deed for the house, car title, passports, social security cards.
You really ought to get a fireproof safe or fireproof deposit box to protect them.
Even though these items are replaceable if they are destroyed in a fire. It is a huge inconvenience and takes a long time to go through the process to get them replaced, causing more stress during what would be a difficult time.

This seems so silly now but I had been really frustrated for a couple of years at how dusty my closet was and wondering why it was so dusty all the time. I was annoyed that I didn't grab and wear items because they were just so dusty until I realized that I was thinking backward and that the items were dusty because I wasn't wearing them. That made it super easy to declutter them, clean the closet thoroughly, and only put back the very small amount of clothes that I was actually wearing. Love your videos! Thanks!

I love the mint colored tile and kitchen walls. I am now retired and 70 years old, so I have a LOT of saved things! Slowly going through things I don’t want or need anymore. i.e. “Teacher clothes,” educational teaching books (teachers are now using internet, etc, and really don’t want my 10 year old grad school texts, no matter how useful), etc, clothes that don’t fit or I don’t wear. I am sure I have over 1000 books In bookcases all throughout my house. I am donating art, crafts, design and reference books to charity. I have already given children’s and young adult books to other classrooms. I put fiction and other RECENT books of interest in the neighborhood LITTLE LIBRARY that we readers all use.
Younger relatives coming in 15 days, so I am putting things they might want in one place. What they don’t want can be donated, sold or given to someone else. P.S. They mostly DON’T want photo albums. We have enjoyed going through them together and they can take pictures on phone, etc, or take the photos they want. I can do the same and discard the rest.
Note from former art and reading teacher: magazines, newspapers are always welcome in school art classes nearby. Some of the photos I mentioned are also useful for language arts and visual arts classes.
I love your “happiness” goal. I think I should be more mindful and grateful. 👍❤️👩🏻‍🎨📖📚

All of these tips are worth writing down to remember to accomplish each habit, one by one. Once you employ all of these ideas, you will not regret it. Your home will be so peaceful!
I was the SAME regarding the papers. I'm ((still)) finding little notes or papers, one by one to toss. Ty for the tax reminder; I'd saved back taxes from the year 2000😅😮😂 and several yrs ago, I had finally let go of a huge binder of canceled checks!
It has taken me yrs to build my decluttering muscles but it has BEEN SO worth it.
10 items that have left our house in the last week:
Exfoliating gloves ( one of those free gifts...)
    Shrub cutters (dull )
Dress ( I convinced myself that it was O.K. to let it go bc I didn't like anything about it.. even though people would compliment me when I wore it)
Sweater ( After seeing myself in a photo with it on and hating it plus, realizing I just dislike sweaters...)
    Shirt ( clingy )
    3 glasses/mugs
Christmas tree collar ( tried to like, prefer a skirt )
    Nail color
Papers ( last bin of daughter's school papers 1st-2nd grade...only 15 yrs overdue on that on, whew )

Great video Shannon. Dealing with incoming paper right away is so helpful. Junk mail goes straight to recycle. And any paper I need to deal with goes into a special basket. Every Tuesday, I pull out the basket and deal with the paper, shredding when I am finished. Only super important papers get saved in a small portable file box, car titles, birth certificates, passports etc. These have all helped me tame the paper monster

Great summary 😊. I love to declutter, clean and organize alone.. eg on weekends my kids go to their father. I tend to do it on rainy weekends. I make it cosy. I do it with favourite films, series or you tube channels (like yours) running in the background with cosy foods and drinks for my breakfast, lunch, dinner breaks. I'm doing my first this weekend (raining)... starting with paperwork and kids memorabilia filing etc.
Now Autumn/Winter is here I will be doing more. In summer I do less.. if the weather is good I go out swimming and walking and doing stuff I love.
Paper is still my biggest problem. And digital (still not started on at all, although I have been decluttering for 7yrs). We have to keep over 10yrs taxes.. each country is different concerning laws for paperwork eg taxes. Luckily I kept everything (in files, in dry boxes in the attic) which i needed for my divorce eg stuff from 40yrs ago living in the UK where I grew up!..so what you need to keep also depends on your lifestyle eg sessile, travelling, living abroad etc.. but you can keep it organized and out of daily life eg in the attic.
Ps. Love that you don't have a coffee table in the middle of the room.. we don't either.. we like the open space to. My kids like lying on the floor, we play board games there and I do paperwork and crafting on the floor. We have one next to the sofa which only comes infront of the sofa in Advent/Christmas when we have treats and the Advent Kranz.

My situation is, I am a minimalist at heart, however I married a hoarder. If I get rid of one thing, he brings into our home, 2-4 things. I've made attempts to explain to him that I feel like I'm living in a cave. There's no air. I can't think or breath. He has tried many times to clear his stuff, but he ends up bringing it back in plus more. I have tried to get organizing merch. It doesn't work. I feel like a nag if I question him as he's bringing stuff in, where he's going to put it. It's almost like his stuff is a security blanket. Deep breaths do help, but it isn't a cure. I appreciate your video. Thank you for sharing. If anyone has any idea how to maneuver through this situation, I'm open to suggestions. Divorce and kicking him out is not an option.

I do use coupons, but only on the store apps that I shop at. My grocery store has so many coupons for things like milk and butter and items I actually buy and use on a regular basis. I then do curbside pickup as I pickup on the way home…it’s only a half block off my route home and I shop on Fridays as you get 4x fuel points that day. I budget shop and only but what I need and only when I need it. My budget for the next three weeks for groceries is less than thirty but I am shopping for items to go with items I have that make affordable meals. I am on a strict budget because I’d student loans. By doing all of this my kitchen inventory is small and no food goes to waste and I have only the kitchen items I us on a regular basis or it’s gone. I rarely get mail except on advertisements day so most goes into the trash cans right next to the mailboxes.

You're videos are great and I heard you mention the echo in your house. I still would suggest you to buy a mini microphone to get the echo out from your videos, you can find cheap ones online.

I actually use an external mic on my camera and it doesn't change much. A lot of the time I use voice over now and it sounds a lot better.

Spectacular Video. Mein Gott, do I ever need help. In January I am moving to a retirement community. I'm going from a 4 Bedroom home to a 2 bedroom flat that is less than 1/2 of the square footage, and no yard. Everybody tells me to sell things, but I feel like just throwing half of my expensive stuff away.
    -
I don't want to waste my time donating, or selling. It will be easier to rent a dumpster.
    -
B-T-W, your home looks like a B&B I used to own and rent out. The look is called "Staging."

There's are some organizations that collect for veterans that will come and pick up donations. No need to even carry to dumpster. But I know what you mean, sometimes you just want stuff out.

What do you do if your husband insists on using the kitchen table as his desk? We have been married almost 50 years and he just has to spread out his papers, and keep them there forever. I have tried giving him various places to keep them, or have suggested a desk for hm, but he just has to walk to the table, sit at the table, put his coat over a chair, and there it all stays. I HATE it!

    • @kathyol
      @kathyol 6 месяцев назад +1

I would make a space in a room for myself with a small table and one chair. I would put a pretty tablecloth on it and always have a small vase with a fresh flower. I would put a place setting for one and eat my meals there. I would never clean the kitchen table and only go in there to prepare my own meals. That's just me!

@@kathyol Great idea, except that my living room and kitchen are separated by a half wall. Everyone who comes into my living room can see his mess. If it were not for that, I would do that. That is great idea, tho.

@l A few months ago, my husband's uncle died and we had to empty out his house. He had an old roll top desk. My husband brought it home and is going to clean it up and repair it. We are putting it in a little room near our living room. I am hoping he will start to keep his junk on the desk now. My fingers are crossed.

I’ll tell you what really bugs me. When you have a top, dress or romper that has straps - like really thin or criss cross back … and it’s not lined!!!! Especially when it’s a oatmeal, beige, light colour. Can’t wear a bra under cuz it looks dumb. Can’t wear nothing which would be my choice) because I’m too old for nipples showing through the tops. 😞😭😩
