Yep. One day at work my boss actually made me cry at work. That was my breaking point. I called in sick the next day, applied for and was immediately hired for a less pay and far less stressful job. I could do that because I had saved sufficient FU money. FU money is the freedom to make choices. No “thing” I could ever buy is worth more than the peace of mind my savings, aka FU money, allows.

there is nothing like the power to say F*@& NO, i'm not doing that (but you have to) no, if you want i can go, and you can hire someone else.
that moment when they (the boss) realize they don't have the power anymore, it is PRICELESS
worth the effort of putting aside the FU money.

We have money and houses we don’t want to have to move out of, but we need help in maintenance. If you can mow lawns, remove snow, prune bushes and trees, do light housekeeping (or heavy housekeeping and cleaning) - and if you are reliable and don’t waste time or your clients’ money - you can make an excellent living.

Out of desperation I started cleaning houses for $25 an hour to survive. Well it’s almost 2024 and I own the only completely non toxic, eco friendly housekeeping company in the city, I have 5 employees, am licensed, bonded and insured and charge over $50 an hour per person. We have weekends and holidays off, I now work less than 20 hours a week and make triple what I did working for those big companies. I absolutely love what I do! The timing of this couldn't be better. I actually walked out of my job on Monday last week. It's not something I would usually do, but I just couldn't do it anymore. It was a toxic environment where I'd been through a lot, was overworked/underpaid, and the last straw for me was a coworker mistakenly sending a message where he called me a c*nt to our team group chat rather than directly to another coworker. I was gone 20 minutes later. All these grown men I worked with harbored resentment for me because I was moving up quicker than they were because I was actually a competent person... but anyway.
I have enough saved up to live off of my savings for at least a year and am going to be incredibly picky about where I go next. I may try the self-employment route for the first time in my life.

This is one of the things that stops a lot of folks from working their own business. You seem to assume that a college education would have gotten you stuck in a cubicle 9-5 somewhere but that doesnt necessarily follow at all. You also seem to assume everyone is an urban dweller or perhaps doesnt have a family to support. Not everything can be about 'you'.

I was exactly you in high school (minus the sleeping and Cs--I got many Fs but enough Ds and Cs to graduate.)
Eventually, I went to college and graduated with a humanities degree. I also got a graduate degree. Both from a legit university--yes, there are 2nd chances.
I would argue that the greatest benefit from pursuing and completing my education is not how much more employable it made me or how much more earning power I have but rather how much more I enjoy living my life.
You know, studying humanities taught me a heck of a lot about the world and the history of humans in it. It also taught me to be skeptical and to analyze.
When I was failing my classes in high school and had no interest in going to college, I had zero understanding how a real education would change my life. It has made life exponentially more interesting.
I'm glad your choice is working for you. But it's not for everyone.

I think there is a benefit to a formal education for some people beyond simply finding a job. Society seems to over-correct. For decades there was this narrative that every one should go to college. Now there’s this counter narrative that college is a waste of time and money for most. Eventually the counter narrative becomes the narrative and the biggest mistake is overlooked: there is no one size fits all in life. Personally I would like colleges to return to places where people there see the value of an education being more that simply utilitarian. Today the costs have gone up while the value has gone down because colleges have been reduced to job mills.

With unemployment you have nothing to lose and the freedom/motivation to jump into any job opportunity. Meanwhile at a toxic workplace securing an exit strategy is much more difficult and good luck if management finds out. I learned it's always best to get yourself fired so at least you have a chance at unemployment benefits vs. giving in to the pressure and quitting voluntarily.

Clients always passed my number to others to the point that I never had to advertise. Once every 6 months or so I would spend half a day calling my previous clients to let them know I’m still available. From thst , I would stay employed for the entire year. People called at the right time. I could literally sit at home (before cell phones) and wait for those calls. Never asking for work, just saying yes and no thank you. I felt in control enough of it got bitched at , I’d charge at least an extra 2hours for that day. Gave myself a raise every year. Still at the end I was earning 35.00 an hour. Even so-called "worthless" degrees are important. College degrees tell a lot to a potential employer- a degree says that this candidate can set goals, make a plan to reach those goals, and fulfill those goals in a set amount of time. Degrees say that this candidate has pursued a course of study and has retained knowledge in a particular field that has satisfied academic rigors and industry peers. Given certain benchmarks, this candidate can also pursue academic endeavor into other fields for our company as well, making them insanely valuable.
While a degree doesn't always guarantee you'll be wealthier, they offer much more value with the opportunities that accompany them. Don't get me wrong, trades like HVAC, plumbing, auto tech, etc. are important and folks who can successfully be self-employed are indeed driven and deserve what they get. Unfortunately, jobs like these have limitations that have nothing to do with the knowledge required. For example, an excellent auto mechanic can make a great living while they're young; however, as you age, you aren't going to be able to get under vehicles, physically manipulate tools, or perform other duties associated with the task at hand. Sure, there are exceptions, but not many. There aren't very many plumbers, carpenters, repairmen over the age of 60. Being self-employed providing services and goods offers plenty of independence and gratification, and I did that for years teaching Spanish and English via Skype all over the world. However, you have to be extremely disciplined to make this your sole source of income, and at specific times of the year, it is insufficient income, and you usually have to find other work. You are also at the mercy of an over-saturated labor market because there are always other competitors out there who can cut costs from under you any given time and virtually steal your business. RUclips content creators are in this category; while it's great to make a living making videos and bank off of ad revenue, there are no barriers to entry for this market and soon everybody is a content creator, which makes the product less and less valuable. Those that make a full living off of production of RUclips vids are few and far between.
Contrarily, those with college degrees enjoy flexibility to move around different industries and are in a much better position to negotiate salaries and other benefits. They are usually offered much more anonymity in the workspace. Work is usually contracted so there is little to no fear of losing your job at the whim of an employer- if you over budgeted and hired me on for a year but realize that the company isn't making enough - in the words of Henry Hill in Goodfellas- "Fuck you, pay me." Even if one only has a bachelor's degree, not everyone does, which gives a candidate an immediate advantage over someone who might even have the same skill set. A degree holder generally thinks critically, researches data and interprets it in order to benefit a company monetarily, which justifies higher salaries. A degree holder typically doesn't worry about his or her position being threatened by an employer hiring someone off the street to do the work, since the work a degree holder does is usually high-skilled. Nor does a degree holder usually have a labor-intensive position that wears out their body and limits their shelf life in the workforce.
This is just my opinion, of course! But in my case, a degree doesn’t hurt self-employment, it only makes it more lucrative. I agree with you that life is more important than work; but high-quality work that you can do for a much longer period of time that you are alive can allow you to live life much more to the fullest. With that being said, going to college is far from being worthless.

I was a manager for an inn for the past year. I had 5 years BEFORE that as a housekeeper. Small, family owned, "we treat our people like family", but yet when I made it my post Covid mission to negotiate our way to accrued sick time for staff who were long term employees, I was unceremoniously booted out. They didn't mind that I could collect unemployment because I had been a spectacular employee AND the owner, the big guy, has simply moved me back to freelance work at a bed and breakfast which has some positives and will equal the same money. All that said I barely made 20,000 last year and that's NOT my only job. I'm a music director as well and have multiple private homes. Across the country in California, folks get up to 50 an hour for what I do, but not in nowhere, MS.

Love the encouragement from this video! I’ve monetized my hand embroidery art & am working at increasing my income. I started with an Etsy shop in 2019 for fun, but in the past two yrs took it a bit more seriously and since then have been making about $300+ CAD each month. In the new yr I’m hoping to go down from 5 days a week to 4 days a week if my boss will allow so I can have more time to work away at and invest in my own business/ RUclips channel so that someday I can be self employed :) I’m not after big income, just enough to keep me home & enjoy a lifestyle I’m in control of :) & I totally agree that building up a business is a slow and steady endurance trek that takes time & yrs of hard work, but will one day pay off! Thanks for sharing Nicole!

The only reason I never followed this advice is because I don't know enough civics to properly liberate myself; also bills are fast and my learning is slow. It doesn't do any good to make your own Big Break if you don't do the paperwork or declare your income right or know the legal language to protect yourself from those who use the law as a weapon. That's a lot of research, which requires lots of time...and the bills never sleep.

Got laid off in 1991, started a business because was no market locally for my engineering specialty. We starved for a few years, was really tight to get bills paid. Slowly the business began to pay the bills. But it kept growing. Now I earn all I need (as I am kind of frugal) and more, have land and equipment paid for that I can sell for retirement money. I have gathered a small but reliable crew, and if we get tired of this sort of work, could turn our efforts and equipment to a different activity. I miss some things about working for a big company, but not enough to go back to it.

She has them in a store in a big city that she sells them from. Plus she has some of her art in a different store in a different town that she sells her stuff from. All on commission of course so she is the epitome of a starving artist, but she does have a job that pays minimum wage. She just wants to sell it to people that find beauty in all her stuff I'm so proud of her.

Hey Nicole, this is great food for thought. I am right in the middle of figuring out career #3, having been a freelance writer and designer. I'm applying for jobs and feel strongly about wanting a traditional work environment. But only because I did all of my wish list first. Now I want to be part of a team doing larger things than I did on my own. ALSO...about music. My daughter is currently applying to colleges to study music performance. We are all for it! We know it is a tricky job choice, but our daughter is making smart choices about where the colleges are located and access to the industry, etc. It seems like there are so many interesting programs for music performers, composers, and the music recording/marketing business. She just recorded and released an EP on her own (i.e., using an inexpensive online distribution service). The project was deeply meaningful to her. Why am I telling you this? Well, you strike me as a person of such great intelligence and wisdom and heart and soul, I bet you would be a great musician, and there are just so many ways to do it now besides "getting signed" or whatever. Could you do music AND your current business?

You should have stressed one should not quit their job until they have another job. One is far more likely to get a new job if one is already employed. And if one is unemployed (not having a "real job") for a long period of time, one becomes very undesirable in the eyes of an employer, regardless of one's education and experience.

Making $50 an hour would be great, but it's nearly impossible not to have "dead" time between "billable" or "earning" time. One cannot assume working 8 hours a day for 5 days a week would yield $100,000 a year. BUT, if you could make $50,000 to $60,000 a year and be happy, it would be worth it.

College shows you can complete a very difficult task and makes you more valuable to an employer, you see a lot folks urging you to not get an education and they are wrong, education is fantastic and a privilege. You can do your own work bur get an education, it's a fallacy that formal education doesn't pay off.

Business I’d like to do myself: write a blog. I have the niche picked out. About 200 ideas written down for blog posts. At one point I had a website started but I’m not very technically educated and couldn’t figure out how to get it like I wanted it, and couldn’t figure out who to turn to to help me out. Then life got really busy and it all took a backseat. Yeah, lack of self confidence and I chickened out. I get scared and discouraged too easily.

ChatGTP is good to ask technical questions re blogging. You need the $20 pm version to be able to upload files to it though the free version should be useful. Dont forget Google Bard and Microsoft's Bing. Seems you may've been getting bogged down in detail - the thing to remember is to help your readers - if its useful content it doesn't really matter what it looks like and 200 ideas would be a fantastic start. You can get AI to help you write too - just remember to guide it rather than try to get it to do it all.

If you work for a company, here's 3 things that control your fate... 1) There's a limit to how much THEY will let you earn, 2) No matter how talented you are and how much you work, you'll only get as far in that company as they'll allow you get, 3) You're expendable. If you work for yourself, you will eliminate the afore-mentioned scenarios. I went to a 4 year state-run Tech high school(cost for 4 years... $40). Graduated in 1976, no college. Got my first job in my trade (Drafting/Design) in 1978 and I've been a product and machine design engineer for 45 years making 6 figures. Of course, only IF you're talented and give a shit about your work, you can do the same. When you work for yourself, you have the best boss in the world.

Hey Nicole, new subscriber and digging your content!
A way to diversify the channel and increase your subscribers as a music lover, is to do reaction videos of new music/artists.
An artist I have been mesmerized with for a year and a half now is Ren, and he has a trilogy of tracks called Money Game that are in line with your content and extremely on point especially Money Game part 2 (Official Lyric Video) which is what I would suggest you start with.
He has a huge online following (known as RENegades) as he is an independent artist and his talent is amazing playing multiple instruments and vocally diverse and his catalogue is equally diverse.
As he is an independent artist he sees the reaction community as a promotion source and will waive copyright if you get a strike.
I think you have a certain “je ne sais quoi” that would be cool for you and your subscribers to experience.

I pass by people with total freedom everyday on my way to work. They live at the bus stops and overpasses. They seem very unhappy.
You could have went to college for music and got a job doing that while pursuing your musical passion. But the fact that you weren't even willing to sacrifice 15 minutes of sleep for your own education and benefit says a lot.
I work with young people who are just starting out in life and for many where we work is their first job and they are currently making about 1400 a week. In four years (assuming no inflation. We get inflation raises) they will be making 2300 a week and above.

My only concern with people doing entrepreneurship, particularly content creation, is that those revenue streams may dry up in a few years when customers or viewers move on to other vendors. There is the potential to make good money, but there's also the potential to end up with nothing and few marketable skills after spending years of one's life building those businesses, whereas putting years of one's life into a certain career field can help one gain valuable skills in a given area. Obviously, there are risks and opportunity costs to everything we do, but we don't want to just make money now. We want to be able to make good money for a long time.

I attended a party a couple of years ago and encountered people who were in well paid jobs which were so toxic they were taking depression medication and sick leave. I earned a lot less at the time but I was much happier.

Unfortunately now that more and more people are working this out we apparently have an employment crisis. I don't know what the figures are like where you are, but here in the UK it seems that suddenly people don't want to work crappy underpaid office jobs or toss chips for McDonalds 5 days a week. Good on them. Except for those who then need the services and the retailers who need those people to run those businesses. I guess there's going to be a bottle neck eventually of crappy jobs available vs people who would rather be self employed and not earn enough (potentially). I will watch with interest!

It's the same here in the U.S. People are fed up with the crappy, under paid, toxic work environments.

what's going on with your eye. I hate working in this system this day and age, to many rules and regulations put me off, self employed is the way to go and having a you tube channel

I can really resonate with what you say, I’ve been watching your videos for a couple weeks now and I got to say me and you really think alike. I also was always late for class because I wanted to sleep more, not a morning person, I did go to college, but I left my job and worked odd jobs for a while, I’m very frugal, have a big savings account etc. Life for me is always about how you can get the best quality out of it, and having some crappy job that keeps pulling your strings is not one of the ways to have quality in your life, for me at least. I also worked many of those kind of toxic jobs. Also have had a lot of experiences like you have from them. I’m a big fan of what you do, feel very blessed that I found your channel, you’re a big inspiration. I’m younger than you are but when I’m your age I hope to be where you are in life with owning a house and my business booming. Keep doing what you do. Also, not blowing smoke up your rear end, but I wish more women could be like you 😊😊😊
