    I bought a 14 inch M3 Max (40 core GPU, 48 GB memory, 2 TB SSD) this week and am loving it! I’m coming from a binned 16 inch M1 pro and the difference is enormous. As a software developer, things are running so smooth now. I know, the M1 also handles the tasks very well but I was lacking on memory more often recently.
    The reason I went for the Max is so I can also use it for gaming. I mainly play WoW (classic and retail) and am very impressed with the results. Both games can be played at max settings albeit with an fps cap of 60, Liquid Detail set to Fair and Resample Quality set to FidelityFX. After changing those settings, the fans never kick in (this has been tested in crowded areas and raids for both games).

      Is the 14 inch version better than the 16 inch? Don’t you lose performance due to throttling?

      And here I am developing on a ZenBook pro 14 13700h 4060 32gb. Yes I repasted using lm and now 110w sustained is possible on the CPU. However the efficiency is garbage and I recently tried an m3pro 12c and it's much faster and lasts all day long.
      Not to mention scientific and Linalg calculations are next level on apple silicon

    • @KrycekA
      @KrycekA 9 месяцев назад +3

      @@octny The 16 inch has less chance to throttle due to its bigger chassis. However, I haven’t had any issue so far with throttling (but mind you, I only have the laptop for 2 days😃) I chose the 14 inch over the 16 inch as I am more fan of the smaller form factor.

    I just got a returb M2 Max Studio. If I was working in 3D rendering daily then I would have waited for the M3 but I don’t and I won’t pay for their price hikes. This is the last apple computer I’ll buy if they keep raising prices like this or limiting the max RAM on their lower end products. I’m hoping for a windows ARM revolution to make Apple think twice about crippling their products and ripping people off.

      We didn't do a ton of gaming tests, but because the frequency is the same between both it's just the core difference, your real-world gaming performance differences will be similar to what you saw in that test. The 40 core is definitely more powerful, but like you said it costs a lot more, and if needed you can just turn down the settings slightly to compensate.

      its not that deep. Apple has access to data from users of macs that show most users are not even using that much bandwidth in the first place. lt makes sense from a buisness stand point to trim unused fat. reddit and apple rumor forums nerds only see numbers on the paper and cry whenever apple does something they do not understand. litterly no one here or in those outlets are youtubers and/or true professionals. these benchmarks are just for clicks/views as they dont transfer to real life perfomance for the majoirty of macbook users

      The binning is probably due to the yield of the new 3nm, which has been well advertised at around 50-60%, so instead of e-wasting the chips with cores that do not pass QC, Apple turns them off and offers binned systems. This is not a grand conspiracy by Apple, it is good economic sense and environmentally friendly. But haters will hate...

    Can we stop with the binned/unbinned nonsense? They're all binned that's how they decide which CPU it's going to be during testing. What you're left with is a full core and reduced core version. The reduced cores version didn't fully pass testing and had cores disabled or they disabled cores to meet production requirements. However both are binned.

    Hi Max and Vadim,
    16" M3 Pro 12/16/36GB/2TB or 16" M3 Max 14/30/36GB/1TB
    I am planning to buy a new MBP and the last couple hundred of my budget can go on either adding more storage to an M3 Pro config or to get the base M3 Max with 1TB. What do you think is the better option here?
    What I am questioning is:
    1) Would 36GB be enough for the M3 Max to show its full potential or I would need to have more RAM to do so? (Ofc, I won't buy 96GB of RAM, but rather compared with getting the top M3 Max 16/40 with 48 or 64 RAM).
    2) How important is having more space, like 2TB, in case I am planning to use this laptop for at least 5-6 years given that I don't like external SSDs a lot.
    3) Should I wait and save some more money and go all-in with a 16" M3 Max 16/40/64GB/2TB, or would it be an overkill anyways?
    Context:
    - My use case: AI dev, data science, and web dev. Some basic video editing as well. ( I don't need very high ram so 96GB with binned M3 Max is not on my list)
    - I currently have and intel MBP 2019 (the one with the disastrous butterfly keyboard, yes 😵) and I am looking to update to a machine that can make my life easier.
    Any suggestions or recommendations?
    Thank you very much for the useful videos.

    • @MaxTechOfficial
      @MaxTechOfficial  9 месяцев назад +1

      Either one will be a big upgrade from your 2019 Intel (I still have one) even a M2 Macbook air is faster in most if not all real-world tasks with double to triple the battery life. If I had to choose between those two machines I would go for less storage but getting the M3 Max. 36GB RAM should be just fine.
      I don't love external SSD's too but the price difference is huge between paying Apple $400 for 1TB of SSD (going from 1TB to 2TB) or getting 2TB's of small and fast external SSD for $169 geni.us/6dGT . You can also get 4TB in the same size for $349. Keep your most important stuff on the MacBook and the rest on the external. With that, when you sell your Macbook you won't get much or anything for extra storage you purchased but you can just keep your external ssd.
      As for waiting longer to get a more expensive M3 Max, I would say it depends on how long you think you'll keep it and how long it will take you to save up the extra. If its 1 extra month or maybe 2, then I would say yea it might be worth waiting, but if its going to take an extra 6 months then I would say just get the binned M3 Max now. If you do want to save up extra, I don't think you need to get the 64GB RAM version. The 48GB is more than enough for most people, and if you dip into ssd swap sometimes its totally fine with the very fast internal SSD's.

Information that is presented in the video and comments by some viewers may be useful to you with respect to identifying your memory requirements for your specific AI workflow. My reading and talk with someone who is involved with ASIC and hardware system development in this area suggests that memory requirements in certain AI/ML workflows can be massive as it is desired to process large data sets in RAM for efficient processing.

      IMO, no need for the crazy specs this youtuber is using for a local machine for many reasons:
      1) Most AI frameworks are still not so optimized for Apple Silicon and CUDA still provides much better performance. So, I would rather save some money and invest in a local GPU or cloud resources than maxing out a MacBook.
      2) Usually AI jobs take hours to be completed and one cannot leave the laptop on and wait, so these usually end on a server or cloud. I usually use the local machine to run some simple experiments or some canary tests before submitting jobs to a server, or to conduct some analysis and run some light weight algorithms.
      For that 48-64 GB w/ M3 Max binned is more than enough, but the problem is Apple does not allow these RAM options with it. They only allow a 96 RAM upgrade for around 800€, which is ridiculous and not worth it.
      If more RAM options were allowed, I would pick up `16" M3 Max 14/30/64GB/1 or 2 TB` without hesitation.

    I've seen no improvement in youtube content since the introduction of the M3 computers, so conclude the benefit is only speed or capacity for high end users. M3 second generation will be arriving eventually adding more cost and performance.

    Such an ambiguous comparison. What's your final opinion then? Cause in 9 out of 10 comparison charts, the M3 won, but close to the end you say you would actually get the M2?
    I don't understand.

    The fact that a product thats supposed to be an upgrade to the last gen performs worse in the gpu bench mark at the same price point is a testament to apples greed. I literally purchased the 14/30 MacBook Pro 16 and canceled my order when I saw this video. Idc if it’s only in one benchmark, I refuse to pay the same price for a downgrade from a previous gen laptop in anyway, especially not for 3300 dollars (I got it on sale). Now I’m trying to justify paying 3800 dollars for the unbinned MacBook Pro 16 or just saying fuck it. What the fuck Apple. I thought the fact that a 4 thousand dollar laptop that only comes with 1tb of storage in 2024 was bad enough.

      It means that Apple has locked out 2 performance cores and 10 graphics cores compared to the regular M3 Max chip that they are now charging $4000 for. For most people, they don't need it.

    I would love to see a more "scientific" approach and inclusion of performance per dollar comparison charts alongside or incorperated into the gen vs gen ones. Instead of generalized opinions. Not sure how those formulas would look like but I'm also not a RUclipsr. I think I'm in the majority when I say that I care about the value more than the release date. Even if the newer ones are better value than old or vice versa. Whether that's Apple vs Apple or vs Windows and Android. No surprises when new is faster than old.

    • @MaxTechOfficial
      @MaxTechOfficial  9 месяцев назад +1

      It's hard to do for some videos, especially if you're looking at older-gen machines where the discounts vary all the time. We can show one price on screen but the next day the laptops go up by hundreds of dollars so because of that I often just generalize it. You can always divide the current prices by the performance for what you do. With that said, we did do performance per dollar in our full M3 MacBook lineup video here: ruclips.net/video/tS1DeT7dBvE/видео.html

      For people buying the M3 Max or M2 Max, pricing is probably the least of their preferences as time is money, and faster performance means time to start another job. So, no, it is not essential in this video. However, the lower chips could be more relevant.

    I kinda hate videos like this. When the M4 Max comes out, they will say buy the discounted M3 Max. Reality is M1/M2 MacBook Air is what 90% of people should be buying.

    • @MaxTechOfficial
      @MaxTechOfficial  9 месяцев назад +1

      We've said that many times. M2 Macbook Air is enough for most people, especially the 15" model. With that said some people can greatly benefit from M3 Max and the extra cost of the machine pays off in 1-2 Months. After that it's all profit. Many people like that watch our channel. And yes, when M4 Max comes out we will do a similar video. Sometimes the older gen is barely slower and can cost a lot less (like we had with M1 Max vs M2 Max).

    Absolutely incredible stuff from Apple. This is such a powerful chip they got there! This would definitely spark a competition from Intel and AMD. Intel has a history of annswering back with relative success. Like when AMD came and Intel pushed forward after AMD's competition or when Apple came with M1 which dramatically changed and pushed the Windows machine further. Now M3 Max is more powerful than i9 13900k. I hope that Intel can answer that within the next 2 years.

    Dumbest thing is not allowing for a 64 GB spec with the 30c M3 Max.

    • @altosack
      @altosack 9 месяцев назад +1

      The binned version has (3) channels of RAM (300 GB/s bandwidth) vs. (4) for the non-binned (400 GB/s bandwidth). 64GB divides well by (4), but not (3).

  • @michaelbrown192

    It all would be nice if only apple allowed full 120hz promotion in low power mode, I have no clue what the hell they are thinking disallowing that. But well that is apple the care about $ in the first place, it absolutely should be configurable in which case the m3 max would be a no brainer as one could just run it in low power mode.
    As is if one does not need the extra power of the max chip but does want 120hz promotion and the best battery life one should buy the m3 pro chip. Ironically m3 max is worse than m3 pro in single thread mode which is what you use when you just browse the web and work your mails. M3 Max running in low power mode is somewhat better than m3 pro in normal mode and uses less energy but you only get 60hz promotion. Ridiculous. It feels very dumb. Now, the fun part starts that if you want m3 pro with 36GB and 1TB it is an unpopular configuration and you can find m3 max binned with the same RAM and storage capacity brand new for the same price as the m3 pro if you get a good deal. Which makes one feel very silly.
    So, fuck this, apple botched it again.

    Can anyone help me? I am upgrading from a 2018 mac mini. I only use Photoshop at an intense level as I am a pro retoucher. the mini has been great, it still works fine i7 64gb ram, I just nee to be able to work while i travel now. So shoudl i get a refurbished M2 max with 128gb ram or spend $1000 more for the M3 max with less ram.

    • @ymckrgb
      @ymckrgb 4 месяца назад

      Seriously doubt you need anything over 64gb ram most likely 36 is enough. Remember that unified memory can use SSD if you need more than the ram you have. I recently found a great deal on an open box M3 max 36gb 1tb binned 14 core 14 inch, around $2500. The absolute sweet spot and best value for professionals imo.

    I think a great disclaimer to put out there is if you want to get the M3 Max chip, it’s only worth getting the highest one due to the memory bandwidth. Also it’s only worth getting that chip with a 16 inch since the 14 inch can’t cool the device enough to reach that peak performance
